Abstract:Structurally simple chalcone derivatives 1-2 are prepared and their diversified emission behaviors are deeply investigated. Two polymorphs (1G:lambda(em) = 536 nm, Phi(f) = 0.08, tau = 1.81 ns; 1O:lambda(em) = 573 nm, Phi(f) = 0.19, tau = 10.82 ns) with distinctively different emission behaviors are constructed by finely controlling the crystallization conditions of compound 1. 1G exhibits typical amplified spontaneous emission while 1O shows an interesting blue shift under smashing process (1O-S: lambda(em) = 562 nm, Phi(f) = 0.23, tau = 6.42 ns), which is ascribed to their different molecular packing structures and intermolecular interactions. Notably, simply introducing a fluorine substituent effectively endows the crystal with red emission (crystal 2: lambda(em) = 598 nm, Phi(f) = 0.16, tau = 18.77 ns). Thus multicolor emissions including green, yellow, orange, and red emissions are obtained based on this simple chalcone skeleton.

Abstract:Herein, a facile strategy was established to build mechanoresponsive luminogens with high sensitivity to substituents and positional effects. Even in slightly different structures, distinct optical phenomena, including fluorescence efficiency and mechano-responsive properties, were clearly present. Outstanding mechanical-induced emission enhancement (5-100 times) properties and reversibility makes for promising applications in pressure sensors and OLEDs.

Abstract:Considering the great advantages of boron 2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole (BOPIM) based dyes, such as facile synthesis, high fluorescence quantum yield, large Stokes shift, and good thermal stability, three BOPIM complexes (BOMPIM-Ph, BOPIM-Th, and BOPIM-TTh) with different aromatic side groups have been developed. Their crystal structures and photophysical and mechanochromic luminescence properties were systematically studied. It was found that their solid state emission and mechanochromic behaviors are related to the side group. High color contrast reversible mechanochromism and piezochromism were observed for the three analogues, while BOPIM-TTh with more bulky thienothiophene groups showed a more sensitive and pronounced mechanochromic response. Steric and electronic effects of the aromatic donating substitutes were proved playing significant roles in regulating the intermolecular interactions and intramolecular charge transfer effect. Fine-tuning the molecular structures of such kind of BOPIM dyes allows convenient modulation of their optical properties and mechano-responsive behaviors.

Abstract:Optical limiting (OL) is an important application of nonlinear optics. Summarizing the structure-property relationship of organic materials is an effective means to develop superior optical limiters. In this work, two triphenylamine-based chalcone derivatives T1 and T2 with different peripheral substituent groups were synthesized to study their transient kinetics and nonlinear optical (NLO) absorption performance. The transient absorption spectrum (TAS) of compounds T1 and T2 in solvents of varying polarities visualizes the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) processes between the local excited state (LES) and the charge transfer state (CTS). Nanosecond Z-scan experiment and hole-electron analysis indicate that all compounds have excellent reverse saturated absorption (RSA) performance at 532 nm and T1 exhibits stronger RSA than T2 due to the stronger ICT performance of T1 caused by the halogen effect. Degenerate pump-probe experiment shows that the ESA of T2 at 532 nm is significantly enhanced by expanding the molecular π-conjugation. Under the premise of consistent linear transmittance (78%), compound T2 shows better OL performance than compound T1 at 532 nm in the nanosecond time domain. The OL thresholds of T1 and T2 are 3.72 and 0.72 J cm-2, respectively, which are better than those of the most reported OL materials. Our research shows that simple and common chalcone derivatives exhibit amazing NLO performance through a reasonable design.

Abstract:A series of novel chromophores A, B, C, and D, based on the julolidinyl donor and the tricyanofuran (TCF) and CF3-tricyanofuran (CF3-Ph-TCF) acceptors, have been synthesized and systematically investigated. The 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene derivative isolation group was introduced into the bridge in the chromophores C and D. These nonlinear optical chromophores showed good thermal stability, and their decomposition temperatures were all above 220 °C. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the energy gaps and first-order hyperpolarizability (β). The macroscopic electro-optic (EO) activity was measured using a simple reflection method. The highest EO coefficient of poled films containing 35 wt% of chromophore D doped in amorphous polycarbonate afforded values of 54 pm/V at 1310 nm. The results indicate that the 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene isolation group can suppress the dipole–dipole interaction of chromophores. The moderate r33 value, good thermal stability, and good yield of chromophores suggest their potential use in the nonlinear optical area.

Abstract:A range of organic Nonlinear Optical (NLO) chromophores containing a hydroxyl-modified electron donor moiety, different pi electron-conjugated bridges of vinyl, furfuran, or azobenzene, and tricyanofuran as an electron acceptor have been synthesized. In addition, their chemical structures, and optical and thermal properties have been thoroughly characterized with a variety of techniques such as FTIR, NMR, UV-Vis absorption spectra, and TGA. The solvatochromism method was explored to calculate the microscopic second-order molecular polarizability of chromophores based on their absorption spectra recorded in several solvents of different refractive indexes. We discovered that the hydroxyl modification to electron donor group significantly improved the thermal stability (increase of 5% decomposition temperature around 10-20 degrees C) of the synthesized chromophores. Moreover, we found that a blue-shift of maximum absorption wavelength up to 80 nm as well as the 150% enhancement of molecular microscopic NLO coefficient was observed after attaching an active hydroxyl group to the internal electron donor moiety of chromophores containing a longer pi-conjugated bridge.

Abstract:A novel series of diamino imidazole-type chromophores has been synthesized, which can be chemically incorporated into polymer matrices. Furthermore, their molecular optical nonlinearity, transparency and thermal stability were determined and studied comparatively. Theoretical calculation and experimental results indicate that good nonlinearity-transparency- thermal stability is well balanced in chromophore 4, which possesses a µgβ0 of 554.8×10 -48 esu, a rather blue-shifted absorption peak at 384 nm in THF, and a high decomposition temperature Td of 377°C. It is strongly suggested from these results that multiple substitution strategy should be useful for designing novel NLO chromophores.

Abstract:In order to further exploit the optical nonlinearities in chalcone derivatives, two bis-chalcone molecules (C1 & C2) are synthesized. The third-order optical nonlinearities of both molecules are investigated via Z-scan. Enhanced nonlinear absorption and refraction are measured in C1 due to its superior planar at-conjugation over C2. Furthermore, an ultrafast sign change in both nonlinear absorption and refraction are revealed in C1 under femtoseconds and picoseconds lasers. A sub-picosecond ultrafast transfer is illustrated via femtoseconds transient absorption spectrum and considered as the mechanism behind the sign change. The results of this research may further extend the potential of chalcone derivatives in nonlinear optical applications and provide another method to tune the optical nonlinearity in such materials.

Abstract:The structure of a novel bichromophore that comprised a readily hyperpolarisable chromophore with 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol via esterification, was confirmed by elemental analysis, UV–visible absorption spectra and 1H NMR. Nonlinear optical polymer films were fabricated by doping the bichromophore and the corresponding monochromophore into poly(4-vinylphenol). In situ second harmonic generation measurements revealed that the bichromophore imparted a 2.2-fold enhancement in the second harmonic generation coefficients of the films, indicating that the novel 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol derivative could be used in the design and synthesis of multi-chromophoric dendrimers with large macroscopic optical nonlinearity.

Abstract:A series of novel inorganic-organic hybrid materials with benzimidazole chromophores covalently bonded into the inorganic silica network as pendants has been designed and synthesized via the wet chemistry routes, The measurement results of solvatochromic method and UV-vis spectra indicate that these benzimidazole chromophores exhibit higher microscopic optical nonlinearity compared with their analogues with benzene ring and without undesirable red-shift of the absorption hand. After corona poling, the macroscopic nonlinear optical activity and poling alignment stability of the hybrid films were investigated by in situ second harmonic generation measurement. These hybrid films exhibit enhanced nonlinear optical coefficient from 25 to 54 pm/V with chromophore concentration varied, improved optical transparency (lambda(max) < 470 nm), as well as excellent polar orientation stability at 160 degrees C.

Abstract:In this article, the structural and nonlinear optical behaviour of a chalcone derivative, (2E)-1-(4-ethoxyphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one have been studied. FT-IR, FT-Raman, and NMR spectroscopy were analyzed to validate the molecular structure. To predict the nonlinear optical characteristics of the chalcone, the DFT approach was used and the experimental results were corroborated by the computations. The bathochromic shift is obtained in linear absorbance spectra and is validated using TD-DFT. Also, the broad emission in the blue region demonstrates the blue light emission property of the sample. Using the finite-field method, the dipole moments, polarizability, first-order and second-order hyperpolarizability parameters have been computed. Ground and excited state dipole moments were quantified by solvatochromism. The third-order nonlinear optical characteristics of chalcone in polar and non-polar solvent media were examined using the open/closed-aperture z-scan technique. The chalcone displayed considerable two-photon absorption with a positive nonlinear absorption coefficient and a positive index of refraction due to the self-focussing effect. Furthermore, the optical limiting study manifests that the investigated chalcone might well be favourable for NLO applications.

Abstract:The ultrafast nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of novel planar pi-conjugated chalcone derivatives, (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (1503) and (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(phenothiazin-2-yl) prop-2-en-1-one (1526) are investigated and compared. The effect of intramolecular charge transfer on NLO absorption and refraction is discussed without changing the planar structural properties of the chalcone molecules. Transient absorption experiments are used to observe the evolution of 1526 from local excited (LE) state to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state. In the Z-scan experiments, 1526 exhibits respectively different nonlinear absorption (NLA) mechanisms (reverse saturable absorption and two-photon induced excited state absorption) at 532 nm (4 ns, 22ps, 190 fs) and 700-900 nm, 190 fs. The NLA and nonlinear refraction (NLR) phenomena of 1526 are observed and discussed in the POPP experiments. The experimental results indicate that the chalcone derivative can become the potential materials for laser protection.

Abstract:Two triphenylamino-substituted chromophores containing hydroxy group, which can be easily incorporated into polymer backbone or sol–gel matrix through covalent bond, were synthesized via Vilsmeier–Haack reaction and Knoevenagel condensation. These stilbene-type chromophores with different electron acceptors were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, FTIR, UV–vis spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The hyperpolarizabilities were characterized through solvatochromic method. Compared with commercially available nonlinear optical dyes such as C.I. Disperse Red 1 (DR1), C.I. Disperse Orange 3 (DO3) and C.I. Disperse Red 19 (DR19), triphenylamino-substituted chromophores possess higher thermal stability and display better transparency in operating wavelength of electronic devices.

Abstract:Four NLO chromophores with different acceptors and modified julolidine donors were facilely synthesized to tune their intramolecular charge-transfer energy gaps for the investigation of the structure-property relationships. The photophysical properties of the UV-Vis absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and solvatochromism were measured and analyzed to understand the effect of electron-donating strength and electron-withdrawing strength on intramolecular charge-transfer. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the electron density of the frontier orbitals, energy gap, molecular microscopic dipole moment and hyperpolarizability. The change tendency of the microscopic hyperpolarizability in different dielectric environments in association with the solvatochromism in absorption was analyzed. Meanwhile, the macroscopic electro-optic performance in relation to molecular structure variation and microscopic properties was further analyzed, revealing that chromophores with a larger solvatochromism exhibited higher microscopic hyperpolarizability and macroscopic electro-optic coefficients. Our investigation of the structure-property relationship gave a reliable insight into molecular design for high performance nonlinear optical chromophores.

Abstract:Two novel bichromophores YL1 and YL2 based on traditional aniline chromophore YL were synthesized by Cu(I) catalyzed click-reaction and systematically investigated in this paper. The UV Vis, electrochemical property, thermal stability and EO activity of these chromophores were systematically studied and discussed. These two bichromophores showed good thermal stability. Then nonlinear optical polymer films were fabricated by doping chromophores into polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The doped films containing bichromophores YL1 and YL2 showed r(33) values of 20 and 17 p.m./V at concentration of 25 wt% at 1310 nm. These values were respectively 2.85 times and 2.43 times of the EC activity of chromophore YL (7 p.m./V). High r(33) values indicated that the new structure of bichromophores YL1 and YL2 can reduce intermolecular electrostatic interactions, thus enhancing macroscopic EO activity. Abstract:In this paper, the photorefractive properties of a low-glass-transition-temperature polymeric composite based on poly(N-vinylcarbazole) doped with an azo dye system with various lengths of alkoxy chain as an electro-optical (EO) chromophore and 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone as photosensitizer were studied by using two-beam coupling and four-wave-mixing experiments. The results showed that the alkoxy chain attached to azo dye can perform plasticization. An optimal length of alkoxy chain was selected.

Abstract:A new hetero-trichromophore (HT-1) was designed and synthesized by linking neutral-ground-state (NGS) chromophore 1 with zwitterionic (ZWI) chromophore 2, and their molecular structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, UV-vis absorption spectra, H-1 NMR. etc. Theoretical calculations show that there is a decrease of molecular dipole moments in gas phase when chromophores 1 and 2 are linked together. The polymer films were fabricated by doping trichromophore HT-1, NGS chromophore 1, and ZWI chromophore 2 into poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh). The second harmonic generation coefficients (d(33)) of the films and the thermal stability of optical nonlinearities were measured by in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. The results show that almost a 5-fold enhancement in second harmonic coefficients (d(33)) is realized as the combination of NGS chromophore and ZWI chromophore. The results indicate that NGS and ZWI chromophore combined hetero-trichromophores can efficiently improve the macroscopic optical nonlinearities in poled polymer materials.
