Abstract:In this paper, two conjectures which were proposed in Luo et al (2010 Phys. Rev. A 82 052122) on the correlations in a bipartite state ρAB are studied. If the mutual information I(ρAB) between two quantum systems A and B before any measurement is considered as the total amount of correlations in the state ρAB, then it can be separated into two parts: classical correlations and quantum correlations. The so-called classical correlations C(ρAB) in the state ρAB are defined by the maximizing mutual information between two quantum systems A and B after von Neumann measurements on system B. We show that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropies of both subsystems A and B, which answered the conjecture on the classical correlation. If the quantum correlations Q(ρAB) in the state ρAB are defined by Q(ρAB) = I(ρAB) − C(ρAB), we also show that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem B. It is also found that Q(ρAB) is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem A for a class of states.

Abstract:The quantum entanglement measure of concurrence is shown to be directly calculable from a Tomita- Takesaki modular operator framework constructed from the local von Neumann algebras of observables for two quantum systems. Specifically, the Tomita-Takesaki modular conjugation operator $J$ that links two separate systems with respect to their von Neumann algebras is related to the quantum concurrence $C$ of a pure bi-variate entangled state composed from these systems. This concurrence relation provides a direct physical meaning to $J$ as both a symmetry operator and a quantitative measure of entanglement. This procedure is then demonstrated for a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system and a real scalar field interacting with two entangled spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Unruh-DeWitt qubit detectors. For the latter system, the concurrence result is shown to be consistent with some known results on the Bell-CHSH inequality for such a system.

Abstract:The construction of the known interacting quantum field theory models is mostly based on euclidean techniques. The expectation values of interesting quantities are usually given in terms of euclidean correlation functions from which one should be able to extract information about the behavior of the correlation functions of the Minkowskian counterpart. We think that the C*-algebraic approach to euclidean field theory gives an appropriate setup in order to study structural aspects model independently. A previous paper deals with a construction scheme which relates to each euclidean field theory a Poincaré covariant quantum field theory model in the sense of R. Haag and D. Kastler. Within the framework of R. Haag and D. Kastler, the physical concept of PCT symmetry and spin and statistics is related to the Tomita-Takesaki theory of von Neumann algebras and this important aspects has been studied by several authors. We express the PCT symmetry in terms of euclidean reflexions and we explicitly identify the corresponding modular operator and the modular conjugation of the related Tomita-Takesaki theory. Locality, wedge duality, and a geometric action of the modular group of the von Neumann algebra of observables, localized within a wedge region in Minkowski space, are direct consequences.

Abstract:Tomita-Takesaki theory associates a positive operator called the "modular operator" with a von Neumann algebra and a cyclic-separating vector. Tomita's theorem says that the unitary flow generated by the modular operator leaves the algebra invariant. I give a new, short proof of this theorem which only uses the analytic structure of unitary flows, and which avoids operator-valued Fourier transforms (as in van Daele's proof) and operator-valued Mellin transforms (as in Zsidó's and Woronowicz's proofs). The proof is similar to one given by Bratteli and Robinson in the special case that the modular operator is bounded.

Abstract:In this paper, von Neumann entropy is used to study three kinds of bipartite qutrit model, which represent SU(3) strongly correlated model, three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, and spin-1 model. The relation between the ground-state entanglement and the quantum phase transition in those models is exhibited and the connection between the entanglement extremes and the symmetries is also discussed.

Abstract:Quantum information theory is a new interdisciplinary research field related to quantum mechanics, computer science, information theory, and applied mathematics. It provides completely new paradigms to do information processing tasks by employing the principles of quantum mechanics. In this review, we first survey some of the significant advances in quantum information theory in the last twenty years. We then focus mainly on two special subjects: discrimination of quantum objects and transformations between entanglements. More specifically, we first discuss discrimination of quantum states and quantum apparatus in both global and local settings. Secondly, we present systematical characterizations and equivalence relations of several interesting entanglement transformation phenomena, namely entanglement catalysis, multiple-copy entanglement transformation, and partial entanglement recovery.

Abstract:We extend the quantum geometric tensor from the state space to the operator level,and investigate its properties like the additivity for factorizable models and the splitting of two kinds contributions for the case of stationary reference states. This operator-quantum-geometric tensor (OQGT) is shown to reflect the sensitivity of unitary operations against perturbations of multi parameters. General results for the cases of time evolutions with given stationary reference states are obtained. By this approach, we get exact results for the rotated XY models, and show relations between the OQGT and quantum criticality.

Abstract:In the general setting of twisted second quantization (including Bose/Fermi second quantization, $S$-symmetric Fock spaces, and full Fock spaces from free probability as special cases), von Neumann algebras on twisted Fock spaces are analyzed. These twisted Araki-Woods algebras $\mathcal{L}_{T}(H)$ depend on the twist operator $T$ and a standard subspace $H$ in the one-particle space. Under a compatibility assumption on $T$ and $H$, it is proven that the Fock vacuum is cyclic and separating for $\mathcal{L}_{T}(H)$ if and only if $T$ satisfies a standard subspace version of crossing symmetry and the Yang-Baxter equation (braid equation). In this case, the Tomita-Takesaki modular data are explicitly determined. Inclusions $\mathcal{L}_{T}(K)\subset\mathcal{L}_{T}(H)$ of twisted Araki-Woods algebras are analyzed in two cases: If the inclusion is half-sided modular and the twist satisfies a norm bound, it is shown to be singular. If the inclusion of underlying standard subspaces $K\subset H$ satisfies an $L^2$-nuclearity condition, $\mathcal{L}_{T}(K)\subset\mathcal{L}_{T}(H)$ has type III relative commutant for suitable twists $T$. Applications of these results to localization of observables in algebraic quantum field theory are discussed.

Abstract:We propose an interpretation of quantum separability based on a physical principle: local time reversal. It immediately leads to a simple characterization of separable quantum states that reproduces results known to hold for binary composite systems and which thereby is complete for low dimensions. We then describe a constructive algorithm for finding the canonical decomposition of separable and non separable mixed states of dimensions 2x2 and 2x3.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the standard formalism of quantum mechanics to aquantum theory for a total system including one internal measuring apparatus.The internality of the measuring apparatus implies that different decompositionof a given density operator for the internal measuring apparatus into mixtureof pure states may have different physical implications. We use `specifiedmixed-state description' to call a density operator with a specifieddecomposition into mixture of pure states. The proposed theory has three basicassumptions, which roughly speaking have the following contents: (i) Physicalstates of the total system can be associated with vectors in the total Hilbertspace; (ii) the dynamical evolution of a state vector obeys Schrödingerequation; and (iii) under a principle of compatible description and certainnon-transition condition, a pure-vector description of the total system mayimply the existence of certain specified mixed-state description. The principleof compatible description states that different mathematical descriptions forthe same physical state of the total system must give consistent predictionsfor results of measurements performed by the internal measuring apparatus. Thisprinciple imposes a restriction to vectors in the Hilbert space and this mayeffectively break the time-reversal symmetry of Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics is a cornerstone of our current understanding of nature and extremely successful in describing physics covering a huge range of scales. However, its interpretation remains controversial since the early days of quantum mechanics. What does a quantum state really mean? Is there any way out of the so-called quantum measurement problem? Here we present an information-complete quantum theory (ICQT) and the trinary property of nature to beat the above problems. We assume that a quantum system's state provides an information-complete description of the system in the trinary picture. We give a consistent formalism of quantum theory that makes the information-completeness explicitly and argue that conventional quantum mechanics is an approximation of the ICQT. We then show how our ICQT provides a coherent picture and fresh angle of some existing problems in physics. The computational content of our theory is uncovered by defining an information-complete quantum computer.

Abstract:We review the physical meaning of modular invariance for unitary conformal quantum field theories in d=2. For QFT models, while T invariance is necessary for locality, S invariance is not mandatory. S invariance is a form of completeness of the theory that has a precise meaning as Haag duality for arbitrary multi-interval regions. We present a mathematical proof as well as derive this result from a physical standpoint using Renyi entropies and the replica trick. For rational CFT's, the failure of modular invariance or Haag duality can be measured by an index, related to the quantum dimensions of the model. We show how to compute this index from the modular transformation matrices. The index also appears in a limit of the Renyi mutual informations. Cases of infinite index are briefly discussed. Part of the argument can be extended to higher dimensions, where the lack of completeness can also be diagnosed using the CFT data through the thermal partition function and measured by an index.

Universal Entanglement and an Information-Complete Quantum Theory

Abstract: The most challenging problem of modern physics is how to reconcile quantum theory and general relativity, namely, to find a consistent quantum theory in which gravity is quantized. This Progress Report focuses on such a tentative theory called the information-complete quantum theory (ICQT), in which (1) spacetime (gravity) as a physical quantum system plays a central role for formulating the theory, and (2) there are no any classical systems and concepts. Here universal spacetime-matter entanglement "glues" spacetime and matter (matter fermions and their gauge fields) as an indivisible trinity, encodes information-complete physical predictions of the world, and is as universal as universal gravitation. After summarizing the basic theoretic structure of the ICQT, conceptual advances achieved so far and some new issues within the ICQT are considered. While such a theory integrating quantum gravity is of fundamental interest to a wider audience, its relevance to quantum information technologies is discussed, with emphasis on its potential impacts on quantum computing and quantum communication.

Abstract:Unitary Modular Tensor Categories(UMTC) have a one-to-one correspondence with Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFT). Different identifications have been made so far associating different physical particle types (anyons) to different UMTCs. However, the area of anyon model transformations has not been discovered much, which correspond to topological phase transitions. Physical condensation of particles (quasi-particles) can correspond to functors between different UMTCs. This paper discusses a special case of doubled semion condensation. We also give an error detection and correction algorithm for the Doubled Semion model which is more efficient than the previously suggested ones. At last, we present some results about twisting the underlying lattice structure and see its effects on UMTCs and logical subspaces e.g., for Ising, Doubled Semion models, and a combination of these. This suggests some interesting "wormholes" phenomenon.
