Abstract:With the increase of the scrap liquid crystal displays (LCDs), recycling indium from waste LCDs has captured an international attention.Chloride metallurgy is a promising method for indium recovery from LCD panels, due to the lower boiling point of indium chloride.In the present study, thermodynamic analyses of indium recovery from waste LCDs via chloride volatilization process by the HSC Chemistry software was carried out to understand the reaction mechanism between chlorinating agent and LCDs to avoid adverse factors, and simultaneously obtain the optimal conditions for the extraction of indium.The results show that the recovered indium from LCDs with HCl o as the chlorinating agent from the PVC pyrolysis is feasible, with the chlorination temperature controlled between 134.49 and 554.25 C, o and the evaporation temperature higher than 490 C, and simultaneously, the oxygen partial pressure controlled or under anaerobic conditions.As such, the influences of SiO , Al O and Fe O , contained in LCDs, can be ignored or avoided, and only CaO, K O and Na O 2 2 3 2 3 2 2 would consume partial pressure of HCl gas, reducing the indium recovery reaction rate.The present study might provide important inspiration for indium recovery from waste LCDs via chloride volatilization process.

Abstract:This study investigated the recovery of indium from waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel using vacuum carbon-reduction. First of all, high purity In2O3 was investigated. The results indicated that indium can be reclaimed from In2O3 using vacuum carbon-reduction in thermodynamics and dynamics. The conditions of 1223K, 50wt% carbon addition, 30min, and 1Pa were confirmed as the optimal conditions for pure In2O3 and high purity indium could be selectively recovered on condensing zone. Based on this, the experiment of the recovery of indium from waste LCD power was performed. The best parameters were confirmed as 1223K and 1Pa with 30wt% carbon addition for 30min. The recovery rate of indium from LCD powder could reach to 90wt%. No hazardous materials produced in this process. Therefore, this technique provides the possibility of reutilization of LCD in an environmentally friendly way.

Abstract:Hydrogen chloride generated via polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pyrolysis could be used to recover indium from waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) via chloridizing metallurgy processes,which in turn achieve the comprehensive utilization of the waste PVC plastic and LCDs.Design-Expert 8.0.5b was used to design and analyze the results of experiments to obtain the optimal indium recovery with a constant PVC pyrolysis temperature and carrier gas flow rate and varying Cl/In ratio,chlorination temperature,and chlorination time.The results indicate that these three factors exert significant influences on the recovery of indium.The indium recovery of each experiment was analyzed,and a mathematical model was established.Indium recovery could reach 97.50％ at the optimal actual operating conditions,i.e.,chlorination temperature of 500 ℃,chlorination time of 30 min,and Cl/In value of 11∶1.The present study may provide important guidance for the recycling and comprehensive utilization of waste PVC plastic and LCDs.

Abstract:In this study, an efficient rough vacuum-chlorinated separation method was developed for the recovery of indium from waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panels using NH4Cl as the chlorinating agent. High purity In2O3 and SnO2 were firstly investigated in a rough vacuum, air and nitrogen atmosphere. The results indicated that the rough vacuum atmosphere could increase the recovery ratio of indium and reduce the influence of tin simultaneously. Moreover, the indium chloride and NH4Cl can be selectively recovered under different condensing temperatures, and the thermodynamic principle of the recovery method was analyzed. Conditions of 400 degrees C, 10 min, rough vacuum atmosphere (0.09 MPa) and sufficient NH4Cl (molar Cl/In ratio of 6) were confirmed as the optimal conditions by pure substance experiments. The waste LCD glass powder was used to recover indium. The weight ratio of NH4Cl to glass powder and the optimum particle size were confirmed as 1 : 2 and less than 0.13 mm, respectively. The pure indium chloride was successfully recovered from the waste LCD panels using this method, and the recovery percentage of indium and the purity of indium chloride are 98.02 and 99.50%, respectively. This work presented a promising technology for the cyclic regeneration of the precious metal indium from waste LCD panels.

Abstract:The tremendous amount of end-of-life liquid crystal displays (LCDs) has become one of the prominent sources of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in recent years. Despite the necessity of safe treatment, recycling indium is also a focus of waste LCD treatment because of the scarcity of indium. Based on the analyses of the structure of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass, crushing is demonstrated to be not required. In the present research, a complete non-crushing leaching method was firstly adopted to recycle indium from waste LCDs, and the ultrasonic waves was applied in the leaching process. The results demonstrated that indium can be leached efficiently with even a low concentration of chloride acid (HCl) without extra heating. About 96.80% can be recovered in 60mins, when the ITO glass was leached by 0.8MHCl with an enhancement of 300W ultrasonic waves. The indium leaching process is abridged free from crushing, and proves to be of higher efficiency. In addition, the ultrasonic wave influence on leaching process was also explained combing with micron-scale structure of ITO glass.
Simultaneous Leaching and Extraction of Indium from Waste LCDs with Acidic Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The fragile indium supply inspired the development of recycling programs for end-of-life electronics products, especially liquid crystal displays (LCDs). LCDs consume 70% of the total indium resources used in the world today. In this study, a novel fusion of leaching and extraction processes was proposed to recycle indium from waste LCDs using the functionalized ionic liquid betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Hbet][Tf2N]). Under the optimum conditions of 10 mL 50% (v/v) ionic liquid/ascorbic acid, 20 g/L of solid/liquid ratio, and 90 degrees C operation temperature within 24 h, the indium leaching rate could reach as high as 99.75% and the indium extraction rate could be enriched by 98.63% in the ionic liquid phase after cooling and stratifying. Introducing ascorbic acid into the process in place of deionized water decreased the distribution rate of iron from 59.87% to 8.84% and promoted the separation of indium and iron. Indium in the ionic liquid phase could then be transferred into an indium-rich solution using oxalic acid and retrieve the ionic liquid. The characteristics of the regenerated ionic liquid remained relatively stable for reutilization. Therefore, the proposed fusion of leaching and extraction processes by [Hbet][Tf2N] provides an efficient alternative to recycle indium from waste LCDs.
Efficient indium leaching and recovery from waste liquid crystal displays panels using microwave and ultrasound-assisted heating system

Abstract:Innovative approaches for recovery indium from waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) has been continuously demanded with increasing concerns over its threat to human health and environment. In this work, we recycled indium from waste LCD panels based on acid leaching procedure (HCl, HClO4 and H3PO4) under microwave and ultrasound-assisted heating system. To optimize the leaching protocol, the method of full factorial experimental design was adopted to explore the influence of different parameters (microwave power, reaction time, acid concentration, and liquid to solid ratio). Results revealed that 100% leaching yield could be achieved as microwave power of 650 W, HCl concentration of 4 M, and liquid: solid ration of 2 within only 142 seconds. Overall, the leaching effect can be ranked as HCl > H3PO4 > HClO4. To further recovery indium from the acid solution after the microwave leaching by electrorefining, different electrolysis times (2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 10 h), voltages (10 V, 15 V, 20 V) and currents (0.1 A, 0.3 A, 0.5A, 0.7A, 0.9A, 1A, 3A, 4A, 5A) were investigated, the optimal indium recovery yield was accomplished by 93.41% with 1A and 10V for 10h. The metal indium precipitate metalized at the cathode after electrolysis was found to be 99.14% for the purity. In addition, pareto chart analysis of standardized effect and regression mode were employed to testify the optimal leaching condition. This work demonstrates an effective and facile way to recovery indium from wasted LCDs with desirable leaching yield than conventional heating approach.

Abstract:Indium recovery from waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) was carried out by using ultrasound-assisted leaching (UAL) and supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction. The leaching efficiency and purity of indium were approximately 97% and 94%, respectively, when using 0.75 M of sulfuric acid and 300 W of ultrasound power level. The highest extraction efficiency of indium was approximately 82%, obtained by using 20 vol% of D2EHPA fraction, 2 M of HCl concentration in the stripping solution and pH 3 of feed solution. The permeability coefficient, initial flux and reaction rate constant substantially increased with increasing D2EHPA fraction and feed solution pH, but HCl concentration provided little effect. If there is a synergistic effect occurring between the feed solution pH and the D2EHPA fraction, the permeability coefficient will be as high as 5.5 μm/s when using pH 3 of feed solution and 20 vol% of D2EHPA fraction. The overall recovery rate of indium can be close to 80%, and the indium purity of the final product solution can be almost 100%. If indium can be completely recovered in the extraction process, the final recovery rate of indium will be higher than 97%. Based on the findings of this study, indium can be efficiently recovered from waste LCDs by using the UAL and the SLM extraction methods.

Abstract:With rapid growth in the use of liquid crystal display (LCD) and increasing concerns for environmental protection as well as conservation of scarce metals such as indium, the recycling of indium from waste LCDs is becoming a hot issue for current society. In this study, the leaching process for indium and exploration of its mechanism were carried out with full consideration of potential theory and experiments. The optimal parameters for the leaching process is controlled at a <75 pm sample size, 180 mm retention time, 50 degrees C temperature, H2SO4 for the leaching agent, 100 g/L initial concentration, and 1:1 liquid-solid ratio. The initial samples and leaching yields were examined with the necessary analytical techniques including SEM, XRF, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and ICP. We also found that the leaching process could largely modify raw material and enhance its activation for further recovery. All the obtained results and findings could contribute to affording a closed-loop recycling process for waste LCDs and sustainable development of indium industries.

Abstract:With a huge amount of waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) generated annually, their proper recycling raises continuous concern to realize pollution control (heavy metal and liquid crystal) and resource recovery (indium). However, due to their multi-metal feature, traditional hydrometallurgy lacks of sufficient selectivity, which makes the recycling route lengthy, costly, and generate more waste. Electrodeposition acts as a promising technique for selective metal extraction from multi-metal system due to its high selectivity and electron as clean reagent. To fully develop its application in metal recovery, stepwise Cu/MoO2 and In electrodeposition from In-Cu-Mo-Fe waste LCD leachate is explored in depth. Electrochemical behavior analysis shows Cu and MoO2 can be first electrodeposited for their higher electroreduction potential. Cl- plays a key role in accelerating indium electroreduction kinetics, which largely shortens the extraction time without the sacrifice of current efficiency. This accelerating effect is attributed to the increased concentration of electroactive species or collision frequency. Under optimized condition, 99.41% of indium (> 99% purity) can be electrodeposited within 13 h with high current efficiency. This study provides a cleaner approach for waste LCDs recycling and gives implications for the potential application of electrochemical technique in e-waste recycling.

Abstract:Associated with the rapid development of the information and electronic industry, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been increasingly sold as displays. However, during the discarding at their end-of-life stage, significant environmental hazards, impacts on health and a loss of resources may occur, if the scraps are not managed in an appropriate way. In order to improve the efficiency of the recovery of valuable materials from waste LCDs panel in an environmentally sound manner, this study presents a combined recycling technology process on the basis of manual dismantling and chemical treatment of LCDs. Three key processes of this technology have been studied, including the separation of LCD polarizing film by thermal shock method the removal of liquid crystals between the glass substrates by the ultrasonic cleaning, and the recovery of indium metal from glass by dissolution. The results show that valuable materials (e.g. indium) and harmful substances (e.g. liquid crystals) could be efficiently recovered or separated through above-mentioned combined technology. The optimal conditions are: (1) the peak temperature of thermal shock to separate polarizing film, ranges from 230 to 240°C, where pyrolysis could be avoided; (2) the ultrasonic-assisted cleaning was most efficient at a frequency of 40 KHz (P=40W) and the exposure of the substrate to industrial detergents for 10 min; and (3) indium separation from glass in a mix of concentrated hydrochloric acid at 38% and nitric acid at 69% (HCl:HNO3:H2O=45:5:50, volume ratio). The indium separation process was conducted with an exposure time of 30 min at a constant temperature of 60°C.

Abstract:The utilization of valuable properties of waste and their reuse as raw materials is an imperative of the circular economy. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is a significant source of valuable raw materials, certain metals, and rare earth elements that are the basis for highly sophisticated IT equipment production. It is estimated that the production of WEEE in Europe in 2019 was 16.20 kg/inhabitant, while quantities continue to grow at a rate of 3–4% per year. Waste liquid crystal displays used in televisions, laptops, desktops, and other devices represent a significant share of WEEE and contain 0.12–0.14% of liquid crystals whose main ingredient is indium—tin oxide. In order to investigate and determine the methods and conditions of indium recycling from waste LCDs, laboratory research was conducted. The influence of temperature, particle size, and retention time in different media with and without ultrasound treatment was monitored to provide the efficiency of indium leaching. The analysis of the results showed that 98% indium leaching was achieved with granulation samples of 10 × 10 mm at a temperature 40 °C/40 min in solution H2O:HCl: HNO3 = 6:2:1 under ultrasound conditions, while aqueous and alkaline media under the same conditions did not show significant efficiency. This study can be used as a practical reference for the recycling of indium from LCD panels.

Abstract:Indium is one of the components with great recycling value in waste LCDs. Degradation of organic materials and the remain of indium in the solid phase can be simultaneously achieved by hydrothermal pretreatment via parameter regulation. Indium was transferred from the solid phase to the liquid phase by using sulfuric acid after hydrothermal pretreatment. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid diluted by sulfonated kerosene and hydrochloric acid were used as extractant and stripping agent respectively to purify and concentrate indium from acidic leaching solution. The results indicated that the leaching yield of indium reached 100% under the optimal condition of reaction time of 40 min, reaction temperature of 70-80 degrees C, acid concentration of 0.5 M and solid-liquid (S/L) ratio of 1:2 g/mL. Given conditions of extraction time of 3 min at the organic phase to aqueous phase (0/A) ratio of 1:10 by 20% D2EHPA and stripping time of 10 min at the (O/A) ratio of 10:1 by 4 M HCl, the recovery efficiency of indium reached 97.25%. In addition, acid leaching process did not change the surface topography and molecular structure of glass substrate and had no negative effect on subsequent recycling of glass. The kinetic equation of leaching yield and reaction time at the temperature of 80 degrees C is 1 - (1 - y)(1/3) = 0.0215 t. Abstract:The contradiction of energy, resource and environment from waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panels is becoming more and more prominent because it contain both harmful liquid crystals and valuable metal indium. However, scarce researches have considered how to separate liquid crystals and recycle indium from waste LCD panels by an environment-friendly process. In this work, an integrated technological process to recycle energy and valuable resource from LCD panels is proposed. Firstly, a stripping product enriched liquid crystals and indium is gained by a mechanical stripping separation. Then, based on a series of pyrolysis separation, vacuum chlorinated separation and substitution reaction, concentration of indium is increased to 36 wt % in final product from 0.02 wt % in waste LCD panels. Several highlights were summarized as follows: (i) Feasibility, principle and reaction mechanism was studied to understand this integrated process. (ii) For pyrolysis process, separation rate of liquid crystals approached 82.06% under optimized parameters by response surface methodology. For vacuum chlorinated process, recovery rate of indium can reach 97.16%. This technological process is quite significant in accordance with the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Principle" for solid waste and further provides a new opportunity for sustainable development of LCD markets. Abstract:Each important process of LCD recovery technology was studied under laboratory conditions.A set of techniques for polarizer removal and LCD glass separation and liquid crystal dissolution by acetone,and indium leaching by sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide were designed.The recovery rate of indium could be reached 89%.Indium can be obtained from the leachant by extraction,chemical replacement and electrowinning.The article provides experiment data and technical support for reuse and detoxification of LCD.

Abstract:As one of the most widely used scarce metals located at the column of IIIA in the periodic table, indium has drawn more and more attention due to its semiconductor and optoelectronic performance. While the reduction of indium minerals, as one of secondary resources, the amount of waste liquid crystal display (LCD) has been accumulated considerably. Indium tin oxide (ITO) film which is the main functional fraction of LCD has consumed more than 70% of the indium production worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle indium from waste LCDs. Some researches have been done for proper treatment to recycle indium from waste LCD which is a primary part of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE). In this paper, the main characteristics of indium and the waste management status of end-of-life LCDs are introduced. And we mainly focus on the highly developed single recycling and reusing techniques. In addition, several combined recycling processes are evaluated. Furthermore, on the foundation of techniques and processes mentioned above, the promising related single techniques and the improvements on whole treatment process of waste LCDs are suggested.

Abstract:Since indium (In) was the most valuable resource in waste liquid crystal panels (LCDs), most researches only focused on preliminary recovery of In, while those coexisting metal elements (Cu, Sn, Al) raised little concern. This could lead to waste of resources, potential risk of heavy metal pollution, and also complexation of following In purification procedures. Besides, current hydrometallurgy processes for In purification are complicated, consume more reagents and generate more wastewater. Therefore, this research applied simple acid leaching and two-step electrodeposition for In-Sn and In-Cu-Al separation with minimum waste generation and input. Considering the special doping structure of indium-tin oxide (ITO), feasibility for concurrent In leaching and Sn precipitation was explored based on the unique Sn species' dissolution and precipitation behavior during acid leaching. Since the behavior of Sn was more sensitive to acidity and temperature, 97.07% of Sn removal and 99.25% of In recovery could be achieved using 1 mol/L H2SO4 at 70 degrees C for 1 h. A specific kinetic model depicting In leaching in thin ITO film situation was developed referring to avrami equation. Then, the application of two-step electrodeposition enabled 95.32% extraction of Cu and deposition of In with a purity over 99?wt% at respective potential.

Abstract:The current researches on the recycling of waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are hard to widely industrialize that require low-cost, rapid and green technologies. In this study, we shortened the acetone soaking time from at least 20 h to 30 min to separate polarizer. In addition, indium bioleaching using Aspergillus niger (A. niger) was firstly explored. The efficiency of indium bioleaching from fermentation broth could reach 100% within 90 min at 70 degrees C, and the glass residues could be reused. Oxalic acid showed excellent abilities on indium bioleaching process according to the analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and kinetics. Furthermore, the leaching parameters of low-concentration oxalic acid solution were optimized using response surface method to improve the powder dosage from 10 to 150 g/L. Therefore, this research promoted bioleaching technology development using A. niger and formed a sustainable process in industry for the recovery of valuable materials from waste LCDs.

Abstract:In the past, most of technologies adopted whole crush for waste LCD panels to treat liquid crystals and indium but had low recovery due to its low concentration. In this work, a mechanical stripping process was proposed firstly to gain stripping product enriched liquid crystals and indium. Liquid crystals are enriched from 03 wt% in waste LCD panels to 53 wt% in the stripping product. Likewise, indium is enriched from 0.02 wt% to 7.95 wt. Liquid crystals in stripping product should be removed in advance since it is disadvantage for indium recovery. This study can successfully remove liquid crystals by pyrolysis process. The results were summarized as follows: (i) Liquid crystals in waste LCD panels were mainly TFT type liquid crystals by thermal gravimetric analysis and chromatograph-mass spectroscopy. (ii) Liquid crystals can be well separated under optimized condition of 873 K, 40 min and 2 L/min N-2 flow rate. Oil and gas produced in pyrolysis process can be reused as energy and fuel. (iii) Pilot scale experiments were utilized to assess the actual effect of pyrolysis separation; decomposition rate of liquid crystals can reach 80%. It gives some valuable information for industrial separation of liquid crystals and provides a necessary preparation for further recovery of indium. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:A process combined pyrolysis and acid immersion was proposed in this study to dispose the hazardous liquid crystal display (LCD) waste for recovering valuable resources. The thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and fixed bed pyrolysis were investigated for the polarizing film that was separated from LCD. The results suggested the liquid product mainly contained acids, esters and aromatics should be upgraded such as hydrotreating process before used as industrial feedstock or fuel source. The gaseous product mainly consisted of H(2), CO, CO(2) and CH(4) can be used as a valuable fuel. The sulfuric acid immersion experiments were studied for recovering indium from the LCD glass after stripping the polarizing film. Central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the acid immersion process and the results indicated the indium recovery can be fitted based on the actual value to a polynomial quadratic equation and the temperature was more essential factor than time and acid concentration in the studied ranges. The optimum processing condition was obtained with time 42.2 min, temperature 65.6 °C and acid concentration 0.6 mol/L. Under the optimal conditions, the indium recovery was close to 100%.
