Abstract:We demonstrate the lasing action from a dynamically localized mode in a microdisk resonator with rough boundary. Although substantial boundary roughness and surface defects in our devices imply strong light scattering and destroy the regular whispering gallery modes, the destructive interference of the scattered light leads to the dynamical Anderson localization in the phase space of the system and the formation of a different type of high-Q modes. Using direct optical imaging of the lasing mode and theoretical calculations, we show that the lasing modes in our devices has dynamical localization origin. This behavior, although demonstrated here in GaAs-InAs microdisk laser, should be applicable to any lasers and sensors based on semiconductor or polymer materials. Abstract:We report the direct observation of lasing action from a dynamically localized mode in a microdisk resonator with rough boundary. In contrast to microlasers based on stable ray trajectories, the performance of our device is robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos, taking advantage of Anderson localization in angular momentum. The resonator design, although demonstrated here in GaAs-InAs microdisk laser, should be applicable to any lasers and sensors based on semiconductor or polymer materials.

Abstract:We investigate lasing and output directionality of limacon-shaped microdisk lasers of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. The far-field patterns are shown to differ between lasing modes, unlike in large cavities where lasing modes exhibit universal emission directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics. Unidirectional emission is obtained for certain modes in the wavelength-scale cavities. It results from weak coupling of nearly isotropic high-quality resonances to anisotropic low-quality resonances, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. The latter is described by an extended ray dynamics which includes the Goos-Hanchen shift and the Fresnel filtering. Mode hybridization and wave effects in open cavities make it possible to control the output properties of individual lasing modes in wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:We reviewed our recent studies on chaotic microcavity lasers. Although most microcavities are designed to have regular shapes, boundary roughness, which is introduced unintentionally during the fabrication process, can throw the regular ray dynamics into chaos. Fortunately, the dynamical localization makes the perform- ance of microcavity lasers robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos. In a chaotic microcavity, the lasing modes may be pulled away from the cavity boundary to avoid the reduction of lasing gain by surface recombination. Moreover, the carriers injected to the central region of a cavity can contribute to lasing. Despite counter-intuitive, a chaotic microcav- ity laser could produces directional output beams. Unfortunately the threshold of chaotic microcavity lasers is usually high. We demon- strated that the lasing threshold in a fully chaotic open microcavity can be minimized by tailoring its shape factor.

Abstract:We present detailed experimental and numerical studies of random lasing in weakly scattering systems. The interference of scattered light, which is weak in the passive systems, is greatly enhanced in the presence of high gain, providing coherent and resonant feedback for lasing. The lasing modes are confined in the vicinity of the pumped volume due to absorption of emitted light outside it. In the ballistic regime where the size of the gain volume is less than the scattering mean free path, lasing oscillation occurs along the direction in which the gain volume is most extended, producing directional laser output. The feedback for lasing originates mainly from backscattering of particles near the boundaries of the pumped region. It results in nearly constant frequency spacing of lasing modes, which scales inversely with the maximum dimension of the gain volume.

Abstract:The authors investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency. The numerical simulations reveal that the lasing modes are multiorbit scar modes. The interference of partial waves propagating along the constituent orbits results in local maxima of quality factor at certain frequencies. The observed modulation of lasing mode amplitude with frequency results from the variation of quality factor, which provides the direct evidence of wave interference effect in open chaotic microcavities.

Abstract:In sufficiently strong scattering media, light transport is suppressed and modes are exponentially localized. Anderson-like localized states have long been recognized as potential candidate for high-Q optical modes for low-threshold, cost effective random lasers. Operating in this regime remains however a challenge since Anderson localization is difficult to achieve in optics and nonlinear mode interaction compromise its observation. Here, we exhibit individually each lasing mode of a low-dimension solid-state random laser by applying a non-uniform optical gain. By undoing gain competition and cross-saturation, we demonstrate that all lasing modes are spatially localized. We find that selective excitation reduces significantly the lasing threshold while lasing efficiency is greatly improved. We show further how their spatial location is critical to boost laser power-efficiency. By efficiently suppressing spatial hole burning effect, we can turn on the optimally-outcoupled random lasing modes. Our demonstration opens the road to the exploration of linear and nonlinear mode interactions in the presence of gain, as well as disorder-engineering for laser applications.

Abstract:The comprehensive theoretical analyses and experimental studies on semiconductor disk lasers are presented. The edge-emitting photoluminescence spectrum which reflects the essential emission properties of quantum wells is theoretically modeled, and the result is in good agreement with the experiment. The surface-emitting photoluminescence spectrum which carries the characteristics of the semiconductor microcavity is explained using the numerically simulated longitudinal confinement factor. The output characteristic is modeled by taking into account the thermal effect, and the result is consistent with the experiment. The oscillating mode of the laser is codetermined by the reflectivity of DBR, the edge-emitting, and the surface-emitting PL spectrum.
The dynamic three-dimensional Anderson localization of optical fields in active percolating systems

Abstract:We study three-dimensional optical Anderson localization in medium with a percolating disorder, where the percolating clusters are filled by the light nanoemitters in the excited state. The peculiarity of situation is that in such materials the field clusters join a fractal radiating system where the light is both emitted and scattered by the inhomogeneity of clusters. Our numerical FDTD simulations found that in this nonlinear compound the number of localized field bunches drastically increases after the lasing starts. At longer times the bunches leave nonlinear percolating structure and are radiated from the medium. Monitoring the output of system allows to observe experimentally such dynamic localized bunches in three-dimensional setup.

Abstract:Precision is a virtue throughout science in general and in optics in particular where carefully fabricated nanometer-scale devices hold great promise for both classical and quantum photonics [1-6]. In such nanostructures, unavoidable imperfections often impose severe performance limits but, in certain cases, disorder may enable new functionalities [7]. Here we demonstrate on-chip random nanolasers where the cavity feedback is provided by the intrinsic disorder in a semiconductor photonic-crystal waveguide, leading to Anderson localization of light [8]. This enables highly efficient and broadband tunable lasers with very small mode volumes. We observe an intriguing interplay between gain, dispersion-controlled slow light, and disorder, which determines the cross-over from ballistic transport to Anderson localization. Such a behavior is a unique feature of non-conservative random media that enables the demonstration of all-optical control of random lasing. Our statistical analysis shows a way towards ultimate thresholdless random nanolasers.

Abstract:Microcavity shows the growing importance of the intensity enhancement, inhibition and spectral narrowing of spontaneous emission. The advantages of microcavity lasers are the very low threshold and small size. We have fabricated three types of semiconductor microdisks: InGaP, GaN, and InGaN multi-quantum-well microdisk with sun-like E-beam resist microstructure. The diameters are ranging from 5-20 micros. The photoluminescence of those microdisks in far-field and near-field observation are compared. Far-field fluorescence imaging shows bright emission of fluorescence around the circumference of the microdisks that can be interpreted as whispering-gallery mode in the disks. However, due to the different disk structures, near-field fluorescence images give several other different views of the light distribution of the microdisks corresponding to different optical modes in the disks. A theoretical calculation of the light distribution of InGaP microdisk based on the theory of optical modes in microdisk lasers is presented in this paper. The near-field mapping of the InGaN microdisks with sun-like E-beam resist structure demonstrates the possibility of using gratings made on the circumference to achieve directional emission without lowering output power.

Abstract:We study both, experimentally and theoretically, propagation of light in the fs-laser written rotating square waveguide arrays and present the first experimental evidence of light localization induced by the rotation of periodic structure in the direction of light propagation. Such linear light localization occurs either in the corners of truncated square array, where it results from the interplay between the centrifugal effect and total internal reflection at the borders of truncated array, or in the center of array, where rotation creates effective attractive optical potential. The degree of localization of linear bulk and corner modes emerging due to the rotation increases with the increase of rotation frequency. Consequently, corner and bulk solitons in rotating wave-guide arrays become thresholdless for sufficiently large rotation frequencies, in contrast to solitons in non-rotating arrays that exist only above power threshold. Focusing nonlinearity enhances localization degree of corner modes, but surprising initially it leads to broadening of bulk nonlinear states, followed by their re-localization at high input powers. Our results open new prospects for control of evolution of nonlinear multidimensional excitations by dynamically varying potentials.

Near-IR Subwavelength Microdisk Lasers

Abstract:We report single-mode lasing in subwavelength GaAs disks under optical pumping. The disks are fabricated by standard photolithography and two steps of wet chemical etching. The simple fabrication method can produce submicron disks with good circularity, smooth boundary and vertical sidewalls. The smallest lasing disks have a diameter of 627 nm and thickness of 265 nm. The ratio of the disk diameter to the vacuum lasing wavelength is about 0.7. Our numerical simulations confirm that the lasing modes are whispering-gallery modes with the azimuthal number as small as 4 and very small mode volume.

Abstract:A direct photo-patterned microdisk-on-chip technique is used to fabricate 2-D microdisk lasers with various shapes. High-Q morphology-dependent resonances (including whispering gallery modes and four bouncing reflection modes) laser emissions from RhB-doped circular and square-shaped microdisks are observed. A thin polymer cladding on the microdisk is found to obviously smooth the disk sidewall. As a result, lowered lasing threshold, increased Q-value as high as 12000 and efficient suppression of h igh-order modes are realized. Lasing from square-shaped microcavities shows closed and open orbit resonances separately at different emission directions.

Abstract:Random lasers exhibit many exotic properties, including chaotic behavior, light localization, broad angular emission, and cost-effective fabrication, which enable them to attract both scientific and industrial interests. However, before the realization of their potential applications, several challenges still remain including the underlying mechanism and controllability due to their inherent multidirectional and chaotic fluctuations. Through more than two decades of collaborative efforts, the discovery of Anderson localization in random lasers provides a plausible route to resolve the difficulties, which enables one to tailor the number of lasing modes and stabilize the emission spectra. However, the related studies are rather rare and only restricted to limited wavelengths. In this study, based on enhanced Anderson localization assisted by surface plasmon resonance, spectrally stable deep-ultraviolet lasing action in AlGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) is demonstrated. Our work serves as firm evidence to demonstrate the underlying mechanism of stabilized deep-ultraviolet random laser action that multiple scattering of a light beam in a disordered medium can induce Anderson localization similar to electron behavior. This feature covers the whole spectral range, and it is a universal phenomenon of an electromagnetic wave. Notably, stabilized deep-ultraviolet random laser action has not been demonstrated in all previous studies, even though it has great academic interest and potential application in many areas from environmental protection to biomedical engineering.
