Abstract:As the primary means of transportations in modern society, the automobile is developing toward the trend of intelligence, automation, and comfort. In this paper, we propose a more immersive 3-D surround view covering the automobiles around for advanced driver assistance systems. The 3-D surround view helps drivers to become aware of the driving environment and eliminates visual blind spots. The system first uses four fish-eye lenses mounted around a vehicle to capture images. Then, according to the pattern of image acquisition, camera calibration, image stitching, and scene generation, the 3-D surround driving environment is created. To achieve the real-time and easy-to-handle performance, we only use one image to finish the camera calibration through a special designed checkerboard. Furthermore, in the process of image stitching, a 3-D ship model is built to be the supporter, where texture mapping and image fusion algorithms are utilized to preserve the real texture information. The algorithms used in this system can reduce the computational complexity and improve the stitching efficiency. The fidelity of the surround view is also improved, thereby optimizing the immersion experience of the system under the premise of preserving the information of the surroundings.

Abstract:This paper presents a driving simulation platform for the development of driver assistance systems (DAS) with the main purpose of promoting the testing of DAS hardware and advancing the verification of DAS performance. The platform uses a combination of two simulation loops, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and driver-in-the-loop (DIL). Its hardware consists of a simulation computer, a monitor computer, a vision computer, DAS actuators as well as a dummy car. Its software components include several specific ones. When designing its monitor software, a GUI-Driven-by-S-Function (GUIDSF) method is proposed to eliminate the delay in the displaying of the simulation data. The vision rendering software uses adjustment based on the principle of optical projection, considerably improving the driver's perception of being immersed in the virtual traffic scene. The success of the developed platform is demonstrated by HIL experiments of actuators and DIL experiments of ACC. They demonstrate that the proposed actuator control algorithm possesses good tracking capability and ACC is capable of improving ride comfort and reducing driver workload, and consequently, the platform is capable of speeding up DAS development.

Abstract:Driving simulators are largely employed in automotive industry, government, military and academic research fields. This paper provides an overview of the development of a kind of special amphibious vehicle driving simulator. A modularization structure was developed according to the structure character, maintainability and fixing space requirement which provide a kind of convenient methods to replace failure device and cut down simulator maintenance cycle effectively. A mixed network structure based on PC was developed which was used to change information between computers and simulated cabin device. A special amphibious vehicle dynamics simulation model was proposed for use on the driving simulator adopting Commercial-of-The-Shelf (COTS) product Matlab/Simulink and Rapid Control Prototype (RCP) technology. The experiment results shows that the amphibious vehicle driving simulator can provide the near same performance as the actual vehicle and improve the driver's operation skill effectively.

Abstract:This paper introduces the Virtual Drive Hardware-in-the-loop Simulation System, which can realize human-machine interaction in the human-vehicle-road virtual simulation environment. First, hardware-in-the-loop simulation technology and virtual reality are introduced and analyzed. Then, the VD HILS System's technical solution and development architecture are presented. In the end, based on LABVIEW, Matlab/Simulink and CARSIM etc software, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform with 3D virtual scene simulation is built. This paper implements hardware-in-the-loop simulation tests under various simulation conditions, verifies basic functions of the Simulation System. Through the actual application in some projects, this Simulation System has been tested to be a high-tech and effective means for the development of vehicles' new products and related performances.

Abstract:Autonomous vehicles are increasingly introduced into our lives. Yet, people's misunderstanding and mistrust have become the major obstacles to the use of these technologies. In response to this problem, proper work must be done to increase public's understanding and awareness and help drivers rationally evaluate the system. The method proposed in this paper is a virtual reality driving simulator which serves as a low-cost platform for autonomous vehicle demonstration and education. To test the validity of the platform, we recruited 36 participants and conducted a test training drive using three different scenarios. The results show that our simulator successfully increased participants' understanding while favorably changing their attitude towards the autonomous system. The methodology and findings presented in this paper can be further explored by driving schools, auto manufacturers, and policy makers, to improve training for autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:Recent advancements in vehicle technology have stimulated innovation across the automotive sector, from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to autonomous driving and motorsport applications. Modern vehicles, equipped with sensors for perception, localization, navigation, and actuators for autonomous driving, generate vast amounts of data used for training and evaluating autonomous systems. Real-world testing is essential for validation but is complex, expensive, and time-intensive, requiring multiple vehicles and reference systems. To address these challenges, computer graphics-based simulators offer a compelling solution by providing high-fidelity 3D environments to simulate vehicles and road users. These simulators are crucial for developing, validating, and testing ADAS, autonomous driving systems, and cooperative driving systems, and enhancing vehicle performance and driver training in motorsport. This paper reviews computer graphics-based simulators tailored for automotive applications. It begins with an overview of their applications and analyzes their key features. Additionally, this paper compares five open-source (CARLA, AirSim, LGSVL, AWSIM, and DeepDrive) and ten commercial simulators. Our findings indicate that open-source simulators are best for the research community, offering realistic 3D environments, multiple sensor support, APIs, co-simulation, and community support. Conversely, commercial simulators, while less extensible, provide a broader set of features and solutions.

Abstract:In active automobile driving training simulator, the steering framework in the simulated cabin has multi-input, multi-coupling and non-linear control effect. A driving training simulator requires dynamic model suitable for fast real-time simulation. This paper uses polynomials to express the load characteristics of an automobile engine, and presents simplified structure velocity and direction control models. The simulation structure of simulated driving and the logic estimation of driver operation are discussed, and illegal operation of driver and car backing state are correctly judged. Through the linearization process of the steering framework input function, simulation models for multiple driving cases are derive and effective algorithm is selected to realize the models. Experimental results show that the presented model and simulation algorithm are correct and feasible.

Abstract:Novice driver training has become an important issue in China with the quick increase of vehicle population. However, the training school mainly provides only operation skill training, which seems insufficient for novice driver training. To help novice drivers develop higher-order perceptual and cognitive skills safely and quickly, a prototype model of driver training platform is proposed. The system allows many networked drivers to interact with other drivers as well as the environment. Some typical road hazards were designed for drivers to experience. Potential impact may include improved training efficiency and safety for higher-order perceptual and cognitive skills. It also provides a means of education to improve publicity of road hazards.

Abstract:This paper presents a car racing simulator game called Racer , in which the human player races a car against three game-controlled cars in a three-dimensional environment. The objective of the game is not to defeat the human player, but to provide the player with a challenging and enjoyable experience. To ensure that this objective can be accomplished, the game incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, which enable the cars to be controlled in a manner that mimics natural driving. The paper provides a brief history of AI techniques in games, presents the use of AI techniques in contemporary video games, and discusses the AI techniques that were implemented in the development of Racer. A comparison of the AI techniques implemented in the Unity platform with traditional AI search techniques is also included in the discussion.

Abstract:Though automated vehicles (AVs) are believed to play a crucial role in future transport, human driving vehicles will share the road with automated vehicles for a relatively long period. So, we need to enable automated vehicles to run along with human drivers especially when they may have conflicts in the right of way. One key problem is how to appropriately model human driving behaviors and quickly simulate their actions when training/testing automated vehicles. Many existing models were originally built for traffic flow studies and may not be suitable for automated vehicles studies. In this paper, we propose a set of new principles of human driving behaviors modeling and simulations. Then, we propose a Data-Driven Simulator (D2Sim) model for human behavior learning, description, and vehicle interaction simulation. In contrast to conventional microscopic traffic flow models, the D2Sim is a trajectory generation model that accepts rich driving environment information (e.g., lane geometry, crosswalks, traffic signals, surrounding vehicles, etc.). Different from many empirical trajectory records replay models, we can arbitrarily set the long-term intentions of the simulated vehicles and intentionally design the corner cases that had not been observed in practice. In addition, the D2Sim adopts adversarial learning to comprehend complex yet stochastic human driving behaviors from empirical data. Testing results show that the proposed model can quickly generate high-resolution trajectory data for training and testing.

Abstract:Abstract Assisted driving technology has received increasing attention. In order to verify the function of the assisted driving technology, this paper takes the automatic emergency braking system as an example and uses CarMaker simulation software to construct a standardized test scenario. Build a vehicle model and add sensors to detect the environment around the vehicle. Set up the Simulink control model. Use the PID control to brake the vehicle. The simulation test of the automatic emergency braking system was completed and the dynamic characteristics of the test vehicle were analyzed. Finally, through simulation experiments, it is verified that the simulation test can achieve extremely dangerous working conditions and reduce the possibility of accidents. Simulation tests can improve the efficiency of the test, and can repeat the test multiple times, reducing the cost of testing.

Abstract:Drivers make use of the driving feel to obtain information about the road condition and vehicle performance. Driving feel which consists of steering feel and vibrant feel of seat, is a significant index to the evaluation of handling stability and driving comfort. The study of driving feel aids automotive experts to improve their design proposal. The application of virtual driving simulator abates the cost of test cars and it is unnecessary to go to the testing field conducting a variety of complex experiments. In this paper, the architecture of AVSoD system based on Unity and numerical simulation is proposed, the models of steering system and hang system, the control strategy of force feedback steering wheel and the control strategy of motion platform are considered. The realization of controlling hardware gives users the authentic feel of driving which can be used to assess and guide the modification of vehicle models.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of the design, simulation, and implementation of a virtual vehicle. Such a process employs the Unity videogame platform and its Machine Learning-Agents library. The virtual vehicle is implemented in Unity considering mechanisms that represent accurately the dynamics of a real automobile, such as motor torque curve, suspension system, differential, and anti-roll bar, among others. Intelligent agents are designed and implemented to drive the virtual automobile, and they are trained using imitation or reinforcement. In the former method, learning by imitation, a human expert interacts with an intelligent agent through a control interface that simulates a real vehicle; in this way, the human expert receives motion signals and has stereoscopic vision, among other capabilities. In learning by reinforcement, a reward function that stimulates the intelligent agent to exert a soft control over the virtual automobile is designed. In the training stage, the intelligent agents are introduced into a scenario that simulates a four-lane highway. In the test stage, instead, they are located in unknown roads created based on random spline curves. Finally, graphs of the telemetric variables are presented, which are obtained from the automobile dynamics when the vehicle is controlled by the intelligent agents and their human counterpart, both in the training and the test track.

Abstract:The safety of single-vehicle autonomous driving technology is limited due to the limits of perception capability of on-board sensors. In contrast, vehicle-road collaboration technology can overcome those limits and improve the traffic safety and efficiency, by expanding the sensing range, improving the perception accuracy, and reducing the response time. However, such a technology is still under development; it requires rigorous testing and verification methods to ensure the reliability and trustworthiness of the technology. In this thesis, we focus on three major tasks: (1) analyze the functional characteristics related to the scenarios of vehicle-road cooperations, highlightening the differences between vehicle-road cooperative systems and traditional single-vehicle autonomous driving systems; (2) refine and classifiy the functional characteristics of vehicle-road cooperative systems; (3) design and develop a simulation system, and provide a visual interface to facilitate development and analysis. The efficiency and effectiveness the proposed method are verfied by experiments.

Abstract:In order to analyze and design vehicle control system, a virtual reality simulation platform suitable for different types of vehicles is developed using VC++ and Vega. The platform has the function of visual simulation for vehicles with no joint, multi-joint vehicles and multi-body systems. The observer in Vega can revolve round the player and zoom in/out. Non-real-time and real-time data association and drive technology has been studied respectively, and by using MATLAB library, MAT file and M file simulation-driven approaches are achieved. Three simulation examples, helicopter, lunar rover and solar sail system, validate the effectiveness and the advantage of the platform. © 2012 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

Abstract:Driving simulator provides an available method to train driver’s operation skill without actual vehicle. Amphibious driving simulator was built to solve the driver’s operation skill in water problem. Hardware components and system structure were given, a real-time simulation computer system adopting Ethernet and Local bus based on PC was used to solve the information exchange between computers and simulated cabin. In order to reduce developing cycle and improve maintainability and perform efficiency, the vehicle dynamical model in water was realized based on COTS software Matlab/Simulink. Experiments shows that the simulator can fulfill the requirement of driver’s operation skill training and the performance of the simulator can keep consistent with actual amphibious vehicle.
