Abstract:We propose novel polarization splitters based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), in which the cores of the splitters are nearly nonbirefringent. Different from conventional fiber-based polarization splitters, the birefringence in the new splitters results mainly from narrow silica regions physically connecting the two cores. This means that polarization splitting can be achieved without employing highly birefringent cores, which provides a possibility to greatly simplify the structures of the PCF-based polarization splitters and make them more practical. A 5-mm-long splitter with an extinction ratio of 20 dB has been obtained. We also discuss how the silica regions influence coupling characteristics of the dual-core PCFs and present a design guidance for the polarization splitters based on polarization-dependent coupling.

Abstract:We report a new kind of polarization splitter based on dual-core photonic crystal fibers. The polarization splitter has a symmetric directional coupler configuration. Each core exhibits high birefringence, which gives rise to an adequate difference in the coupling lengths for the two orthogonal polarizations. A 1.7-mm-long splitter is obtained with the splitting ratio better than - 11 dB and a bandwidth of 40 nm. The relationship between the length of the polarization splitter and the diameter of the air hole in the middle of the two cores is discussed. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A novel polarization splitter based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with two nonidentical cores is proposed. The two highly birefringent cores are vertically arranged to obtain polarization selective coupling. The horizontal polarization exchanges its energy between the two cores. However, the vertical polarization shows little coupling between the two cores. This is achieved in single-material glass waveguides for the first time to our knowledge. The PCF-based polarization splitter exhibits many advantages such as shorter length, high extinction ratio, and wide bandwidth over its counterparts.

Abstract:Based on the mechanism of automatic shaping, the corrugated multilayer films of two_dimensional (2D) phtonic crystal is designed.This structure realizes omnidirectional polarization splitting with TM mode passing window between λ＝148 and 152μm, which is the complete band gap of TE mode. The variable rang es of the slope angle of the layers and the width of a-Si single layer are 38° —49° and 014—015μm, respectively. Band structure has been used to expl ain the omnidirectional polarization effect. An arrow-end_like 2D photonic cryst al which is the deformation of the corrugated multilayer films is introduced for comparison. It can only work as a wide-angle polarization splitter not as an o mnidirectional one for wavelength from 128 to 131μm. The comparison of th e band structures of these two different 2D photonic crystals leads to the metho d of extending the incident angle of polarization splitter.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:Two novel wide-angle and broadband 2D photonic crystal polarization splitters (PCPS) which are the multilayer wavy films (MWF) structure and arrow-head like structure are designed based on the autocloning method. Plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure and explain the reason for the wide-angle and broadband polarization splitting effect. In order to verify the result derived from PWE method, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to test and measure the polarization effect for the MWF structure.

Abstract:The design of a Si/SiO_2 photonic crystal omnidirectional polarization splitter at the center wavelength of λ=1.5μm is briefly presented utilizing a photonic band gap for TE mode. The fabrication of the omnidirectional photonic crystal polarization splitter is an easy process based on coating films on the grating and is suitable for industry. The frequency band corresponds to wavelength band from (λ=1.37μm) to λ=1.76μm. The theoretical relative bandwidth is 32.8%.

Abstract:The polarization dependence of light coupling in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with sixfold symmetric dual cores and highly birefringent dual cores are numerically investigated. The characteristics of PCF-based couplers, such as coupling length, extinction ratio and form birefringence, are examined as functions of the air-hole size and pitch. The silica bridges between air holes take an important role in the energy transfer across the two cores. We believe that the mechanism of light coupling in PCF-based couplers is different from that of conventional waveguide couplers. The polarization dependent coupling can be reduced by adjusting the air holes around the cores of PCFs. On the other hand, the polarization dependent coupling can be enhanced by introducing high birefringence in the two cores.

Abstract:We study the birefringence and polarization coupling in the index-guiding photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with squeezed hexagonal crystal lattice. The sign of form birefringence in such photonic crystal fibers can be changed as the wavelength changes, which is reported for the first time to our knowledge. A PCF-based polarization splitter with squeezed hexagonal lattice is proposed to achieve excellent extinction ratio and a simpler structure than those reported previously.

Abstract:We have proposed a novel silver-coated ultra-broadband small-size dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) polarization splitter which achieves a short length, high extinction ratio (ER) and ultra-wide bandwidth at the commonly used communication wavelength band. Finite element method-based numerical simulation is applied to carry out a thorough investigation for wavelength from 1 to 2 μm. According to the simulation results, the coupling qualities of the proposed structure can be improved by resonant coupling between the core guide mode and the surface plasmon polarization (SPP) exciton mode. By analyzing the change of ER with varying wavelength, the ER value of this work are achieved as 67.4 and 67.1 dB when the wavelength are 1.14 and 1.57 μm, respectively. The final splitting length (LS) is 17.17 μm. To the best of our knowledge, it is difficult to achieve in all previous studies. With a splitting bandwidth of 900 nm (1.0–1.9 μm) and the ER value of −50.1 dB at 1.55 μm, the E + S + C + L + U communication bands are completely covered. The proposed model has excellent beam-splitting performance, such as ultra-short LS, ultra-wide splitting bandwidth and good tolerance performance, with potential applications in optical fiber communications or fiber laser devices.

Abstract:Abstract A PCF (photonic crystal fiber) with high birefringence and single-mode polarization retention over a wide wavelength range is designed and studied. The birefringence and polarization retention characteristics of the PCF base mode were studied using FVFEM (full vector finite element method) and APML (anisotropic perfect matching layer) as boundary conditions. The simulation results show that by rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the horizontal axis by 45°, and then rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the longitudinal axis by 45°, the birefringence of the PCF obtained is as high as 4.7 × 10−2, and it has good single model ability, which can be used for various optical devices.

Abstract:Two ultra-short polarization beam splitters (PBSs) based on surface plasma resonance (SPR) are designed for wavelengths of 1.31 and 1.55 μm. The center of the PCF has an oval hole filled with gold and the first layer of the air holes around the core is filled with the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) to enhance birefringence. In this work, the full vector finite element method is used to optimize the structural parameters. Two sets of parameters with extinction ratios of 114.02 and 111.86dB and lengths of 14.52328 and 11.02418μm are designed at wavelengths of 1.31 and 1.55 μm respectively. The results reveal that the beam splitters with broadband and short fiber length have important prospects in communication applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel pentagonal structure dual-core photonic crystal fiber polarizing beam splitter (PS-DC-PCF PBS) filled with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in the central hole. Unlike previous designs with symmetric arrangements, the upper and lower halves of the structure have different air hole arrangements. The upper half consists of air holes arranged in a regular quadrilateral pattern, while the lower half features a regular hexagonal arrangement of air holes. By filling the central hole with birefringent liquid crystal, the birefringence of the structure is enhanced, reducing the coupling lengths along the x polarization and y polarization directions. The polarization properties, coupling characteristics, and the influence of different structural parameters on the extinction ratio of the polarizing beam splitter are analyzed using the full-vector finite element method. Simulation results demonstrate that the designed PS-DC-PCF PBS achieves a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of 72.94 dB with a splitting length of only 61.9 μm and a wide operating bandwidth of 423 nm (1.324–1.747 μm), covering most of the O, E, S, C, L, and U communication bands. It exhibits not only ultra-short splitting lengths and ultra-wide splitting bandwidth but also good manufacturing tolerances and anti-interference capabilities. The designed PS-DC-PCF PBS could provide crucial device support for future all-optical communication systems and has potential applications in fiber optic communication or fiber laser systems.

Abstract:We reported on a polarization beam splitter based on a novel chalcogenide dual-core photonic crystal fiber. The glass matrix of the optical fiber is Ge10As22Se68. We used computerized numerical control precision drilling methods to manufacture preforms. Then the preform was drawn into an optical fiber with a regular hole structure. The maximum extinction ratio reached -32.76 dB with a 26.27 mm-long optical fiber. Numerical results show that the shortest working length of the designed polarization beam splitter is 636 µm. In addition, the modeling analysis based on the actual structure shows that the theoretical value is consistent with the measured value.

Abstract:We report on the birefringence of photonic crystal fibers as functions of fiber structure parameters and incident wavelength. It is found that the sign of the fiber birefringence can be changed by controlling the incident wavelength. The guided-mode coupling properties of the dual-core photonic crystal fibers are highly engineerable by tailoring the birefringence. New types of polarization splitters based on the photonic crystal fibers are presented.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.
