This paper focuses on the impacts of financial intermediation development on the urban-rural income disparity (URID) in China. Using a twenty-year province-level panel data set from 1978 to 1998, it is found that the change of URID may be explained by fiscal policy during the early reform period (1978-1989) and financial intermediates during the later reform period (1990-1998). In addition, it is shown that the direction the Kuznets effect, an inverted 'U'-shaped relationship between per-capita gross domestic product and URID, is sensitive to changes in government development policies. This study adds to the spatial economic inequality literature by clarifying the effects of urban-biased financial intermediation policy on the underlying dynamics of convergent and divergent effects on urban-rural inequality.

Abstract:This paper provides insights on the sustainability of economic development from a historical and political economy perspective. We demonstrate that China's rural financial policy in the 1980s was quite liberal in employing market mechanisms, supporting entrepreneurship, and encouraging competition. These policies were abandoned in the early 1990s and replaced by ubiquitous government interferences that shifted resource and policy priorities to benefit political incumbents. A large panel of survey data confirms that rural household access to finance decreased dramatically in the 1990s and that the statistical significance of economic entrepreneurial factors in determining credit allocation also fell. Further empirical analyses show that market economic conditions are not sufficient to explain these changes and the evidence is consistent with a political entrenchment motive during the political regime after the turmoil in the year 1989. Given the connection between entrenchment and underdevelopment, our findings raise the concern that China's political institutions' insufficient limits on the government could be a challenge for China to sustain its economic success.

Abstract:With the provincial panel data from 1978 to 2008,this paper makes an empirical analysis on the long-run relationship and the short-run volatility's influence among financial development,opening-up and urban -rural income gap in China.The results show that financial development and opening-up broaden urban-rural income gap significantly in the long-term,and financial development's effect is larger than opening-up's,and opening -up has significant mediating effect that financial development broadens urban-rural income gap further with opening-up's promotion.Financial development broadens urban-rural income gap and opening-up has litde effect on urban-rural income gap in east China;it's similar to the situation of whole country,but opening-up has larger effect in west China and central China.At last,this paper provides the explanation and some suggestions.

Abstract:Rising income inequality challenges economic and social stability in developing countries. For China, the fastest-growing global digital economy, it could be an effective tool to promote inclusive development, narrowing urban-rural income disparity. It investigates the role of digital financial inclusion (DFI) in narrowing the urban-rural income gap. The study uses panel data from 52 counties in Zhejiang Province, China, from 2014 to 2020. The results show that the development of DFI significantly reduces rural-urban and rural income inequality. The development of DFI helps optimize industrial structure and upgrade the internal structure of agriculture, facilitating income growth for people in rural areas. Such effects are greater in poorer counties. Our findings provide insights into why rapid DFI and the narrowing of the rural-urban income disparity exist in China. Moreover, our results provide clear policy implications on how to reduce the disparity. The most compelling suggestion is that promoting the optimization of industrial structure through DFI is crucial for narrowing the urban-rural income gap.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the influence of digital financial inclusion on China's urban–rural income disparity. A comparative analysis on income differences between western and eastern regions in China was conducted in this paper. The study utilized a static panel approach as it consisted of 22 provinces in China that covered the period from 2011 to 2020. This paper employs Stata software for the data analysis. The dependent variable of this study is the urban–rural income gap. Meanwhile, the independent variables consist of the total index level, breadth of coverage, depth of use, degree of digitization, digital payment level, digital insurance level, and digital credit level. The control variables employed in this article are education level, financial support, economic transformation, technological progress, and trade openness. The empirical outcomes indicate that the seven independent variables potentially minimize the urban–rural income gap between the two regions. However, digital financial inclusion appears to have a more significant effect in lessening the urban–rural gap in the western region compared to the eastern region in China. The findings demonstrate that all the variables exhibit a higher degree of influence on the urban–rural income differences in the west than in the east, except for the credit index. The outcome reveals that the effect of the credit index in the western region (0.10%) is slightly lower than the eastern region (0.11%). In general, the present findings can provide valuable insights for policy makers in their efforts to address the urban–rural income gap in the two regions through the implementation of digital financial inclusion initiatives. The study should be conducted regularly to observe the trend of the income disparities between the western and eastern regions in China. Future studies can also focus on other regions or narrow the focus to provincial and city levels to capture more detailed information.

Abstract:The combination of digital finance and financial inclusion can better meet the needs of those who have little access to financial services. This paper investigated the differences in the determinants and mechanisms of digital financial inclusion development between urban and rural areas. The sample consists of 1607 counties in China from 2014 to 2019, and uses the fixed-effect model and panel threshold technique. The empirical results indicate that: (1) The industrial economy and governmental intervention are the common determinants of urban and rural digital financial inclusion development, in which the degree is different. At the same time, secondary education is only a determinant in rural areas. (2) Industrial upgrading and indirect finance play a mediating role in the determinants of digital financial inclusion, but indirect finance is only significant for urban areas. (3) There is a threshold effect in the financial development-digital financial inclusion relationship. Under different financial development levels, the determinants of urban and rural digital financial inclusion show the discrepancy. With the development of digital financial inclusion under the trend of promoting innovative digital finance in China, these findings are expected to enhance access to financial services in urban and rural areas for more inclusive and sustainable futures.

Abstract:Narrowing the urban-rural income gap and alleviating income inequality are pressing challenges that need to be addressed in China at present. Based on inter-provincial panel data in China , this paper establishes a partially linear function-type coefficient model to explore the heterogeneous effects of financial development on the urban-rural income gap and its channel mechanism from the perspective of regional development imbalance. The empirical results show that the financial development can exert the urban-rural income gap convergence effect only when the economic level reaches a certain threshold, and the marginal effect increases with the improvement of the economic level. In addition, the threshold of economic level is not the same for different channel mechanisms, leading to differences in the income gap convergence mechanisms under different development stage: at the end of the sample years, most provinces can utilize rural industry revitalization mechanism, while less than half of the provinces can utilize the industrial advanced change mechanism. Based on this, this paper proposes the following recommendations: establish policy priorities according to the region's own development stage and implement regional differentiated financial development strategies.

Abstract:With the rapid development of digital inclusive finance, whether it can lower the income inequality between urban and rural areas has been the focus of policy makers and researchers. Based on China's 2011–2018 provincial panel data, this paper employs spatial econometric models and mediating-effect models to examine the impact of digital inclusive finance on the urban–rural income gap and its mechanism. The main findings are as follows: First, globally, the urban–rural income gap and digital inclusive finance each exhibit significant positive spatial correlation; locally, the income gap primarily exhibits spatial dependence in Central and Western China. Meanwhile, digital inclusive finance transitions from varied agglomeration patterns to exclusively H-H patterns in Eastern China. Second, digital inclusive finance notably reduces the urban–rural income gap, primarily attributed to its expanded breadth of coverage and digitization. Third, mechanism analysis indicates that digital inclusive finance can narrow the urban–rural income gap by increasing labor employment, resulting in higher farmer incomes, rather than through individual entrepreneurship and human capital investment. The findings of this study are crucial for improving digital inclusive financial development and adjusting urban–rural income distribution.

Abstract:Based on the perspective of spatial economy, this paper focuses on the primary effects and spatial characteristics of Digital Financial Inclusion (DFI) on the upgrading of rural consumption structure (URCS) in China, conducting a literature review and theoretical analysis. It then uses statistical data collected over the years and the Digital Financial Inclusion Index (DFII) of Peking University to prepare panel data for 31 provinces in China (aside from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2011 to 2020 for empirical testing. The results are as follows: DFI can considerably boost URCS, and there is a strong spatial neighbor impact, that is, it is affected by random shocks in surrounding provinces via its spatial effect; DFI has nonlinear characteristics in the process of fostering URCS, with the threshold variables of income level and family sizes; the impact of DFI on URCS is spatially heterogeneous, and the promotion of the eastern region is better than other zones. These results can inform policymakers about rural development and provide valuable references to push forward rural vitalization.

Abstract:Although extant literature has extensively discussed the poverty reduction effect of digital financial inclusion, few papers have explored the association from a spatial perspective. Based on the Peking University Digital Financial Inclusive Index, this study empirically tests the impact of digital financial inclusion on the urban–rural income gap in China. To perform the analysis, this paper employs the spatial Durbin model (SDM) with double fixed effects and a mediating effect model. We find that (1) there is a significant positive spatial correlation between digital financial inclusion and the urban–rural income gap, and both variables have certain spatial agglomeration characteristics; (2) digital financial inclusion has a significant promotion effect and a positive spatial spillover effect on reducing the urban–rural income gap; and (3) the test of the spatial influence mechanism shows that the above effect is achieved by promoting industrial structure upgrading. This paper combines the above results to propose corresponding policy recommendations, which are valuable for other developing countries and emerging economies with similar backgrounds to China.

Abstract:Reducing the urban–rural income gap stands as a pivotal factor in attaining sustainable economic development. Policymakers and researchers have focused on whether digital inclusive finance can narrow the urban–rural income gap. Utilizing provincial-level panel data from 31 regions in China, this paper empirically tests the impact of digital inclusive finance on the urban–rural income gap across different areas of China, specifically analyzing the mediation effect of rural loan availability. The findings indicate that (1) the expansion of digital inclusive finance can enhance the inclusiveness of financial services in rural areas and narrow the urban–rural income gap; (2) the effect of digital inclusive finance on the urban–rural income gap exhibits regional heterogeneity; (3) the rural loan availability has a mediation effect on the urban–rural income gap, but its growth will weaken the narrowing effect of digital inclusive finance on urban–rural income gap; and (4) the reduction in the urban–rural income gap attributable to digital inclusive finance exhibits a nonlinear relationship with the level of urbanization. This paper recommends guiding the digital transformation of rural financial institutions and enhancing farmers' financial literacy to increase the availability of loans in rural areas. Furthermore, implementing region-specific policies and regulations could effectively narrow the urban–rural income gap.

Abstract:This study takes a perspective from governmental development strategy to examine the causes for the underdevelopment of Chinese urbanization and the rising inequality in rural-urban income. The results show that the governmental strategies that aim to encourage the prior development of capital-intensive sectors have led to a relative decrease in the employment demand in urban sectors, which in turn retards the urbanization course, bans the effective migration of rural residents into cities, and increases the rural-urban income disparity. Our study uses the Technology Choice Index (TCI) as a measure of the extent of governmental policy support for capital-intensive sectors, and employs the provincial panel data in 1978-2008 to test the theoretical hypothesis. The study also reveals a U-shaped tendency of Chinese rural-urban income disparity in the course of economic development.

Abstract:This article is an empirical analysis of the relations between financial structure and theurban–rural income gap (URIG) in China’s economic transition, based on the country’sdouble dual structure. We employ data of 31 provinces in China from 2001 to 2016 toempirically study the influence of financial structure on the URIG. We find an invertedU-shaped relation between financial scale and the URIG, a positive impact of urbanand rural financial structure on the URIG, and an inverted U-shaped relation betweenthe mismatch of financial resources and the URIG. These findings show that selectionof the optimal proportion of the state-owned economy through ownership reform andthe promotion of financial development and optimization of the allocation of financialresources are two effective ways to reduce the URIG.

Abstract:Urban and rural development and reduce urban-rural income gap is a hot topic of economic research, interaction between financial development, economic growth and income inequality mechanism of great significance for the study of the problem. In this paper, by constructing the vector error correction model(VEC), and makes an empirical study on the relationship between financial development, economic growth and income gap in China from 1990 to 2016. The study found that financial development, economic growth and income gap have the long-term equilibrium relationship; financial development will expand the income gap, and financial development is resulted widening income gap of Granger reasons, the expansion of the income gap to a certain extent, inhibited the financial development, however, this inhibition is lagging; economic growth has widened the income gap, and the income gap is the reason for the economic growth of Granger, Indicating that the income gap contributed to economic growth; economic growth in the early inhibition of financial development, but in the long run, economic growth to promote financial development, and economic growth is the financial development of Granger reasons.

Abstract:Post-reform economic policies in China have been biased toward urban residents and have contributed to the increasing urban-rural inequality. Analysis of the provincial panel data during 1987-2001 shows that urbanization significantly narrowed the urban-rural inequality. We also find that interprovincial migration, economic opening, and governmental participation in economic activity are contributing to the expanding urban-rural inequality. The structure of governmental expenditure is also found to have significant effects on urban-rural inequality.

Abstract:Using panel data from 2016 to 2020, this empirical study examines how the urban-rural residents’ income divide in China is affected by digital financial inclusion. This paper investigates the association between the digital universal financial inclusion and the Thiel index, which gauges the income disparity in 31 provinces, using Stata16 software and a two-way fixed effects model. In this framework, this paper also look at the mediating role played by economic progress. The findings show that closing the income gap is significantly and favorably impacted by digital financial inclusion. In addition, this research discover that the per capita GDP of each area and the average amounts of years of schooling of the population over the age of 15 serve as significant mediating variables between digital financial inclusion and the income gap, although the urbanization rate does not. These results highlight the critical role that digital financial inclusion plays in encouraging inclusive growth, promoting balanced economic development, and minimizing regional differences in China.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, education finance in China has transitioned, against the background of high economic growth and fast socio-political development, from a local-only financing regime to a new regime that involves a combination of local, provincial and central funding. Beginning in year 2000, the central and provincial governments have stepped in to reduce inter-region disparity and to improve equity and the overall quality of basic education throughout China's vast rural areas. The fast-track transition provides a good window for scholars to study the impact of the changing education finance regimes. The paper analyses the differential effects of the local, provincial and central funding levels on the within-province equity of education finance, and provides evidence on how policy shocks in a fast growing economy can affect education provision in a transitioning system. We test the differential effects of the financing regime transition on the equity of education finance, taking advantage of provincial level data and a panel data set of county-level jurisdictions across the country. With a constructed inequity index, we examine the impact of policy shocks, controlling for multiple factors. While our results suggest the measures taken may have dampened growth in inequity, they do not provide evidence of improved equity overall, revealing that disparity is still growing between developed and less developed counties.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of industrial structure upgrading in China on urban-rural income disparity. Using panel data from 30 provinces with the empirical analysis methodology, we find that, during 2013 and 2018, industrial structure upgrading in China plays a significantly positive role in narrowing urban-rural income disparity. By the mechanism analysis, we find that urbanization rate is an intermediary variable which affects this causation. Further, urbanization in industrial structure upgrading for the influence of narrowing rural-urban income disparity existing in threshold effects, and threshold levels present a regional difference. Using the urban-rural consumption gap as the proxy variable of income gap, the result is still stable.

Abstract:Since the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, the financial industry has experienced significant development, leading to a substantial increase in per capita household income. This paper uses data on per capita household income nationwide from 2010 to 2022, along with the number of financial institutions across various regions from 2010 to 2022, to study how financial development impacts per capita household income. Empirical findings reveal a positive correlation between the number of financial institution outlets and per capita disposable income, with noticeable differences between urban and rural areas. The increase in the number of urban financial institutions has a greater effect on improving per capita household income. The study concludes that developing inclusive finance, digital finance, and other approaches to provide efficient and convenient financial services to more people can promote social and economic development.
