Abstract:Summary form only given. Pulse compression is a well-established technique for generating optical pulses shorter than those produced directly by lasers or amplifiers. Most commonly, additional bandwidth is generated by self-phase modulation as the pulse propagates nonlinearly in an optical fiber. Compressors based on single-mode fibers are limited to nanojoule pulse energies by higher-order nonlinear effects and ultimately damage to the fiber. Thus, new approaches are needed for compression of the high-energy pulses that are now readily-available from regenerative amplifiers, for example. We describe a new approach to pulse compression based on quadratic nonlinearities. A negative (i.e. self-defocusing) nonlinear phase shift is produced in a phase-mismatched quadratic interaction. Normal dispersion is then required to compress the phase-modulated pulse, and this can be provided by a suitably-chosen piece of transparent material such as glass or sapphire. The use of a self-defocusing nonlinearity eliminates the problems that ordinarily arise from Kerr self-focusing during the propagation of intense pulses in bulk media

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In order to get shorter pulse width to improve time resolution,femtosecond pulse was compressed by using two prisms and a reflective mirror.Femtosecond pulse was measured with a home-made second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating.The temporal width of input pulse was 89fs,the time-bandwidth product was 0.9096,the minimum error was 2.4‰ and the average power of the input light was about 480mW.The width of compressed pulse was 22fs,the time-bandwidth product was 0.44203,the minimum error was 1.1‰ and the average power of the output light was about 250mW.The compression ratio was 4∶1,which was higher than that in the related report.The experimental results indicate that the compressing device is valid and the result is useful for getting shorter pulses.

Abstract:Useful nonlinear phase shifts can be produced in cascaded quadratic processes. The issues that arise in the extension of cascade nonlinearities to the femtosecond regime are outlined in this paper, and initial applications of the cascade phase shifts to femtosecond pulse generation and propagation are reviewed. The results demonstrate that the cascade phase shifts offer unique properties, and in some cases pulse-shaping techniques based on cascade nonlinearities have potential to offer substantial performance improvements over existing approaches.

Abstract:Post-compression of ultra-short laser pulses via self-phase modulation is routinely employed for the generation of laser pulses with optical bandwidths reaching far beyond the laser gain limitations. While high compression factors can be routinely achieved, the compressed pulses typically suffer from temporal quality degradation. We numerically and experimentally analyze the deterioration of different measures of temporal quality with increasing compression factor and show how appropriate dispersion management and cascading of the post-compression process can be employed to limit the impact of this effect. The demonstrated saturation of pulse quality degradation at large compression factors puts novel femtosecond laser architectures based on post-compressed pico- or even nanosecond laser systems in sight.

Abstract:Cascaded nonlinearity based soliton pulse compression in the process of femtosecond difference frequency generation is studied theoretically. A set of simplified coupled wave equations under the conditions of large phase mismatch and matched group velocities is obtained, which reveals the physical mechanism of soliton compression in this process. Numerical simulations demonstrate that in the presence of group velocity dispersion and equivalent cross phase modulation, both the pump and the signal pulses can be compressed with a high compression ratio.

Abstract:We demonstrate soliton-effect compression of picosecond pulses using ultralow loss dispersion-engineered 40-cm-long silicon-nitride nanowaveguides. We show compression by factors of 21× of 1 ps pulses using pulse energies as low as 18 pJ.

Abstract:In this paper, the multi-stage compression of picosecond pulses by cascaded quadratic nonlinearity is studied theoretically, and the dependence of pulse compression on phase-mismatch, laser intensity, and crystal characteristics has been discussed in detail. We demonstrate that the multi-stage pulse compression is much more efficient than the single-stage with a same total crystal length. Pulses as short as ∼150fs can be generated by compressing 30-ps initial pulses in a two-stage configuration under the realistic crystal and laser conditions, and shorter pulses of ∼30fs may be obtained by three-stage compression. Pulse compression performances with BiBO and BBO crystals are compared and discussed finally.

Abstract:Ultrafast femtosecond laser systems with hundreds of microjoules of energy operating at repetition frequencies of several kilohertz have very important applications for many fields such as medicine,mid-infrared laser generation,industrial processing and vibrational spectroscopy.The Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technique provides a feasible path to obtain light sources with such parameters.However,the use of chirped pulse amplification increases the technical complexity and cost of the laser system.Recently,the proposal of Multi-pass Cell (MPC) nonlinear pulse compression technique allows us to obtain high power ultrafast femtosecond pulses with reduced technical complexity and cost.The composition of the device requires only two concave mirrors and a nonlinear medium in between.In the past seven years,the Multi-pass Cell nonlinear pulse compression technique has been developed so much that it has become possible to obtain ultrashort pulses with average power of more than a few kW and peak power of tens to hundreds of TW.In this work,we have achieved nonlinear pulse compression for a 100 W picosecond laser using an improved nonlinear pulse compression scheme that combines a hybrid of a plano-cancave multi-pass cell and multi-thin-plate.Using fused silica plates in plano-cancave cavity,the spectral bandwidth (FWHM) of input picosecond laser is broadened from 0.24 nm to 4.8 nm due to self-phase modulation effect,the pulse is compressed to 483 fs by dispersion compensation using grating pairs,which corresponds the compression factor of 22,and the final output power of 44.2 W is obtained.As comparison of conventional MPC,the plano-cancave cavity scheme we developed is a very promising solution for nonlinear compression due to its compact,more stability and large compression ratio.

High-performance ultrafast pulse compression in the visible spectral range for extreme nonlinear optics at kHz-MHz repetition rates

Abstract:We demonstrate a remarkably effective single-stage compression technique for ultrafast pulses in the visible electromagnetic spectrum using second-harmonic pulses at 515 nmderived from a 1030 nm Yb-based femtosecond regenerative amplifier. By employing an advanced multi-plate scheme, we achieve more than fourfold compression from 180 fs to 40 fs with an extremely high spectral broadening efficiency of over 95%, and a temporal compression efficiency exceeding 75%. In addition, our method leverages a low nonlinearity medium to attain the shortest pulse durations for a single compressor while maintaining a superb spatial beam quality with 97% of the energy confined in the main lobe of the Arie disk. Moreover, our technique enhances the temporal pulse quality at 515 nm without generating substantial femtosecond-to-picosecond pulse pedestals. The resulting intense visible laser pulses with excellent spatio-temporal parameters and high repetition rate of 100 kHz to 1 MHz open up new frontiers for extreme nonlinear optics and ultrabright EUV and X-ray high-harmonic generation using short VIS wavelength.

Self-compression of ultrahigh-peak-power lasers

Abstract:Pulse self-compression is a simple and economical method for improving the peak power of ultra-intense laser pulses. By solving a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation considering the fifth-order susceptibility, we found that self-compression appeared even in normally dispersive medium owing to the negative fifth-order susceptibility inducing a mass of negative frequency chirp. Furthermore, negatively pre-chirped pulses allow for self-compression at lower intensity, avoiding medium damage. We numerically analyze the optimal choice of pre-chirp, input intensity, and medium length. A proof-of-principle experiment successfully proves the above theoretical findings. It is expected that petawatt or even exawatt laser pulses with 25 fs/15 fs transform limited pulse duration can be self-compressed to about 9.9 fs/7.6 fs in normally dispersive medium, such as fused silica glass plate.

Abstract:A pulse compressing technology of single-frequency Q-switched laser based on the cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) effect is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, for the first time to the best of our knowledge. A theoretical model of the pulse compression is established through deconstructing the pulse duration evolution in the high-order Stokes and anti-Stokes lights of CFWM. A pulse compression ratio of (2|m|+1)1/2 is quantificationally obtained with m corresponding to the order number of the CFWM light. Utilizing dual-wavelength (DW) single-frequency Q-switched laser injected into a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), the pulse compression and the spectral broadening phenomenon are observed simultaneously. As the order number of the CFWM light increases from 0-order to 3-order, the pulse duration has reduced from 115 ns to 47 ns with a compression ratio of 2.45, which is essentially consistent with the theoretical analysis. The pulse compressing technique by CFWM is conducive to promoting the performance development of the single-frequency Q-switched laser, which can improve the system precision in the Lidar, trace gas detection, and high-precision ranging. Furthermore, this technology based on time-frequency transformation dynamics may be generally applicable to other single-frequency pulsed fiber lasers.
Post-compression of multi-mJ picosecond pulses to few-cycles approaching the terawatt regime

Abstract:Advancing ultrafast high-repetition-rate lasers to shortest pulse durations comprising only a few optical cycles while pushing their energy into the multi-millijoule regime opens a route towards terawatt-class peak powers at unprecedented average power. We explore this route via efficient post-compression of high-energy 1.2 ps pulses from an Ytterbium InnoSlab laser to 9.6 fs duration using gas-filled multi-pass cells (MPCs) at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. Employing dual-stage compression with a second MPC stage supporting a close-to-octave-spanning bandwidth enabled by dispersion-matched dielectric mirrors, a record compression factor of 125 is reached at 70% overall efficiency, delivering 6.7 mJ pulses with a peak power of about 0.3 TW. Moreover, we show that post-compression can improve the temporal contrast at picosecond delay by at least one order of magnitude. Our results demonstrate efficient conversion of multi-millijoule picosecond lasers to high-peak-power few-cycle sources, opening up new parameter regimes for laser plasma physics, high energy physics, biomedicine and attosecond science.

Abstract:This chapter focuses on recent progresses in the leading femtosecond laser technology. Few‐cycle pulse generation based on Ti:sapphire laser is reviewed, and this has led to precise carrier‐envelope phase control which is crucial in optical frequency metrology and single attosecond pulse generation by high harmonic generation. The advanced concept of passive and active synchronization between two‐color femtosecond lasers has the potential to Fourier synthesizing an optical electric field and to generate an attosecond pulse train. In additional, the technology of chirped pulse amplification boost ultrashort pulses to an unprecedented peak power which is a significant issue in high field physics. With the state of the art of management of femtosecond laser pulse, we enable to open the discovery gate with the light field of covering ultrafast process, ultrabroaden spectrum, ultrastable metrology and ultraintense phenomena.

Abstract:An all-fiber high-energy nonlinear chirped-pulse amplification system with two-stage double-cladding fiber amplifiers is presented in this paper. It generates pulses with the energy up to 10 μJ at 20 kHz repetition rate and total accumulated nonlinear phase shift as large as 12.8π. The pulses can be compressed to 137 fs with the compensation of mismatched third-order dispersion by self-phase modulation in the fiber amplifiers.

Abstract:Pulse compression based on periodic layered Kerr media has been demonstrated as an effective technique for femtosecond pulses with energies around 100 µJ or more. We report such a compressor designed for pulses in the 10-µJ range, which is valuable for many applications. Pulses from a fiber chirped-pulse amplifier are compressed from 300 fs to as short as 60 fs, with good pulse and beam quality. The compressor is a simple and efficient way to extend the performance of common Yb-based sources of pulses with microjoule energies.

Abstract:We present an ultrashort-pulsed laser source with time-widths as short as 20 fs at around 1.5 μm. For this purpose, the pulses have been spectrally broadened and temporarily compressed by means of supercontinuum generation in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. Inspired by numerical simulations, we have experimentally confirmed that the emission of a resonant dispersive wave is a key indicator for the optimum configuration to achieve maximum temporal compression. No dispersion control stage is needed, which results in the simplicity of the system. An extensive analysis has been made concerning the quality of the pulses obtained, particularly in terms of time-width (at half height and at 1/e height of the maximum) as well as their time-bandwidth product. The complex retrieval of the pulses shows that the smallest temporal width obtained experimentally is 17 fs. A comparison with values found in the literature also shows that our pulses are among the best that can be found with this technology.
