Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:Polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsule is a kind of composite particle with special morphology,which synthesis techniques has become one of the research hotspots in the field of nanometer science.The approaches of self-assembly,template,dendrimer and miniemulsion polymerization and their recent developments are described in detail,as well as the prospects,advantages and disadvantages of each approach.Moreover,the approach of miniemulsion polymerization has big potentials and wide prospect for the industrialization of polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules as its simple,environment-friendly and efficient preparation technique.Especially,the interfacially confined reversible addition fragmentation transfer(RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization combines the living polymerization of RAFT polymerization with the droplet nucleation mechanism of miniemulsion polymerization,the structure(size,morphology and thickness of shell) and compose(polymeric shell and functional group) of the polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules sub-micro/nanocapsule can be exactly tuned by the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization,and the polymeric nano-shell with much higher crosslinking degree can be fabricated.
Solvent-Free Fabrication of Anisotropic Microparticles with Precise 3D Shape Control Using Dipping-Based Micromolding

Abstract:We present an innovative solvent-free micromolding technique for rapidly fabricating complex polymer microparticles with three-dimensional (3D) shapes utilizing a surface tension-induced dipping process. Our fabrication process involves loading a photocurable solution into micromolds through mold dipping. The loaded solution, induced by surface tension, undergoes spatial deformation upon mold removal caused by surface forces, ultimately acquiring an anisotropic shape before photopolymerization. Results show that the amount of photocurable solution loaded depends on the degree of capillary penetration, which can be adjusted by varying the dipping time and mold height. It enables the production of polymer particles with precisely controlled 3D shapes without diluting them with volatile organic solvents. Sequential micromolding enables the spatial stacking of the polymer domain through a bottom-up approach, facilitating the creation of complex multicompartmental microparticles with independently controlled compartments. Finally, we demonstrated the successful simultaneous conjugation of multiple model-fluorescent proteins through the biofunctionalization of microparticles, indicating functional stability and effective conjugation of hydrophilic molecules such as proteins. We also extend our capacity to create bicompartmental microparticles with distinct functionalities in each compartment, revealing spatially controlled functional structures. In summary, these findings demonstrate a straightforward, rapid, and reliable method for producing highly uniform complex particles with precise control over the 3D shape and compartmentalization, all accomplished without the use of organic solvents.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved solvent evaporation method with silicone oil ( PDMS) as the continuous phase for preparation of microcapsules to make more polymer solvents available. A microchannel device was used to produce emulsions instead of mechanical stirring to prepare the mono-dispersed microcapsules. Under the conditions of lower evaporation temperature and shorter evaporation time, uniform polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microcapsules containing Aliquat 336 (ALQ) have been successfully prepared. N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with lower evaporation ability was applied as the polymer solvent. The prepared microcapsules have rough surfaces and homogeneously internal structures. By changing the two-phase flow rate, the mean size of microcapsules can be easily controlled. When more ALQ was added in polymer solution, the loading ratio of microcapsules increased. The mass transfer performance and stability were determined by extraction of Cr (VI) ions from its aqueous solution. The mass transfer rate was fast enough. After three times of repeated extraction and stripping, the microcapsules kept almost the same extraction ability, which indicated that the microcapsules have very good stability.

Abstract:In this work, a miniemulsion template method was proposed to prepare a porous polymeric monolith with an inter-connected structure. The preparation of a porous monolith with sub-micrometer pore structure was realized and showed great potential to prepare a nanoscale porous monolith with an inter-connected structure. A medium internal phase miniemulsion was employed as a template to prepare the polymeric monolith with an open-cellular structure. The porosity was decreased to 47%, which increased the mechanical strength of the porous monolith more than 40 times compared with those prepared from conventional high internal phase emulsion polymerization methods.

Abstract:The challenge of producing polymer vesicles remains difficult, despite numerous attempts to modulate the kinetics of polymer vesicle budding and achieve precise control over the membrane characteristics. An innovative approach that incorporates the use of copolymer-loaded single-emulsion droplets is proposed to address this challenge. This method enables the precise manipulation of micelles and polymer vesicles' composition, structures and dimensions. The emulsion contracts and forms microspheres when the copolymer concentrations exceed > 0.5 wt%, resulting in the formation of nano polymer vesicles. Conversely, the copolymer spontaneously forms micro polymer vesicles and micelles through vesicle budding at lower concentrations. The spontaneous production of vesicles and micelles can be induced by modifying the copolymer concentration in the emulsion. Our discoveries have a significant impact relative to the development of copolymer membranes and contribute to an enhanced comprehension of the mass manufacturing of polymer vesicles from single emulsions.

Abstract:The design, preparation and properties mining of hollow colloids are the focus of current research. However, there is an urgent need for a facile, controllable, general strategy to synthesis hollow structures with tunable cavities and diverse shell properties, but this still remains a major challenge. Herein, we implement a universal method for the synthesis of hollow structures from microtumblers to hollow nanoparticles by the strategy of polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) self-assembly cavities forming. And the strategy includes self-assembly and diffusion-controlled silication procedures. The particle diameter, cavity shapes, cavity microenvironment, and shell properties are precisely adjusted by chain structure of polymers. The random copolymers are used to fabricate hollow microtumblers while the hollow nanoparticles are obtained due to the contribution of block copolymers. Based on this facile approach, one-pot encapsulation technology of active targets (e.g., Ag, Pt, Au nanoparticles, etc) has been successfully established accompanied by the polymers. In the course of the experiment, we found that these active targets which indicating their boundless prospects in micro/nano-containers, can be in situ self-assembled in hollow microtumblers. Thus, the hollow microtumblers present high-efficiency catalytic activity as a reactors. And the reactible nature of hollow structures also allows us to investigate the fasibility of seeded polymerization in the confined cavities. In this work, we demonstrates the potential of PGMA polymer strategy as an affordable and scalable cavity-manufacturing protocol to generally fabricate hollow structures, which is expected to greatly enlarge the synthetic toolbox. And it can further enrich the theoretical exploration and technical reference of hollow materials in energy, catalysis, biomedicine and other fields.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel method to fabricate polymer particles with controlled morphology in microchannel by solidification of polymer solutions and study the transition in the shape of these particles from spheres, to cups, and to donuts. The non-spherical geometries are achieved through nonuniform diffusion of the solvent, leading to non-uniform solidification. By adjusting the flow rates of both continuous and dispersed phases, the spatial heterogeneity in the solvent diffusion rate and thus the morphology of the final polymer particles can be tuned. This approach offers a one-step continuous process for the fabrication of non-spherical polymer particles. The technique is applicable to different polymers under appropriate polymer-solvent combinations. The ability to tune the shapes of polymer particles easily will create new opportunities for applications that require anisotropic functional particles, such as in biomedical engineering.

Abstract:In-fiber fluid instability can be harnessed to realize scalable microparticles fabrication with tunable sizes and multifunctional characteristics making it competitive in comparison to conventional microparticles fabrication methods. However, since in-fiber fluid instability has to be induced via thermal annealing and the resulting microparticles can only be collected after dissolving the fiber cladding, obtaining contamination-free particles for high-temperature incompatible materials remains great challenge. Herein, confinement-free fluid instability is demonstrated to fabricate polymeric microparticles in a facile manner induced by the ultralow surface energy of the superamphiphobic surface. The polymer solution columns break up into uniform droplets then form spherical particles spontaneously in seconds at ambient temperature. This method can be applied to a variety of polymers spanning an exceptionally wide range of sizes: from 1 mm down to 1 µm. With the aid of microfluidic spinning instrument, a large quantity of microparticles can be obtained, making this method promising for scaling up production. Notably, through simple modification of the feed solution configuration, composite/structured micromaterials can also be produced, including quantum-dots-labeled fluorescent particles, magnetic particles, core-shell particles, microcapsules, and necklace-like microfibers. This method, with general applicability and facile control, is envisioned to have great prospects in the field of polymer microprocessing.

Abstract:Polymer microspheres with uniform size, composition, and surface property have gained extensive researches in past decades. Conventional bottom-up approaches are using monomers or oligomers to build up desired polymer microspheres. However, directly shaping high-molecular-weight polymers into well-ordered polymer microspheres remains a great challenge. Herein, we reported a facile and efficient top-down approach to fabricate microspheres with high-molecular-weight polymer microfibers. By harnessing interfacial engineering-control during the polymer microspheres formation, uniformly sized microspheres could be produced with widely ranged diameters (from 10 µm to the capillary length of each polymer melt). The size limitation of this approach could be further extended by a controllable Plateau-Rayleigh instability phenomenon. Principally, the top-down approach allows fabrication of microspheres by various polymer melts with surface energy higher than 25 mN/m. Our work paves a way for green, cost-effective, and customizable production of a variety of functional polymer microspheres without any chemical reaction assistant.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of our work in the area of the synthesis of poly in er particles in continuous microfluidic reactors. The method includes (a) the generation of highly monodisperse monomer droplets in a microfluidic flow-focusing device and (b) in-situ solidification of these droplets by means of photopolymerization. We discuss the effect of monomer properties on the emulsification process, the effect of the polymerization rate on the production of high-quality particles, the role of the material of the microfluidic device in droplet formation, and the synthesis of particles with different shapes and composition.,;, We also demonstrate the production of highly ordered arrays of polymer particles achieved by photopolymerization of the dynamic lattices of monomer droplets in microfluidic channels, The article is concluded with a summary of future research directions in the production of polymer colloids in microfluidic reactors.

Abstract:This article describes a facile and promising method to prepare uniform, non-spherical colloidal particles with shape and chemical anisotropies. We first synthesize polystyrene (PS) colloids with a concave multi-dimple structure, through a unique combination of two-stage dispersion polymerizations and a programmed feeding of cross-linker during the synthesis. These concave particles, after a seeded polymerization process, can be swelled out to precisely controlled shapes by varying the amounts of the swelling chemicals. A myriad of concave-and convex-shaped colloidal particles, including hemispheres, peanuts and bowls are obtained. In addition, we explore the potential applications of the synthesized anisotropic colloids by looking at the field-driven directional self-assembly, the optical hiding effect and their use as colloidal surfactants.

Abstract:We report a novel approach to continuous and scalable production of core-shell droplets and polymer capsules in microfluidic devices. The described method is also useful in the synthesis of polymer particles with nonspherical shapes. We used capillary instability-driven break-up of a liquid jet formed by two immiscible fluids. Precise control of emulsification of each liquid allowed for the production of highly monodisperse core-shell droplets with a predetermined diameter of cores and thickness of shells. We also achieved control over the number of cores per droplet and the location of cores in the droplet. We carried out fast throughput photopolymerization of the monomeric shells and obtained polymer particles with various shapes and morphologies, including spheres, truncated spheres and, hemispheres, and single and multicore capsules.

Abstract:Microcapsules with large cavities have been widely used as microcontainers in various fields. Its practical applications in aqueous systems often require a combination of water dispersibility, water-resistance and mechanical properties. Microcapsule architecture combining all these characteristics represent challenges of delicate structure design and efficient fabrication. In this work, a novel kind of hydrophilic-hydrophobic asymmetric bilayer microcapsule was developed, which achieved a good combination of the desired features for application in aqueous systems. The bilayer microcapsules with a hydrophilic outer shell and a hydrophobic inner shell were prepared in one-step by "phase separation inside emulsion droplet" combined with photopolymerization. With this unique hydrophilic-hydrophobic asymmetric shell, the microcapsules possessed balanced dispersibility in water and water-resistance property as well as outstanding mechanical property simultaneously.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel approach to implementing a double-concave (DCV) microlens using a simple polymer dispensing and sucking process. The DCV microlens is implemented at room temperature using a commercially-available pneumatic-controlled polymer dispensing system. The DCV lens profile can be tuned by varying the volume of the dispensed polymer. It is also easy to integrate the present polymer DCV microlens with other suspended micromachined devices such as silicon nitride film and silicon-on-glass (SOG) micromachined structures. This study further employs the process for DCV to implement a concave mirror. The measurement results show a typical DCV lens (made of NOA63 polymer) with negative focal lengths of -1.42 mm (red laser) and -1.17 mm (blue laser), and a concave mirror with a focal length of 3.28 mm. Moreover, this study also demonstrates the integration of a DCV microlens with other optical components, such as plano-convex and double-convex lenses.

Abstract:Overview of latest advances in droplet microfluidic formation of highly monodispersed microparticles, involving a plethora of types including spherical, nonspherical, and Janus type, as well as core–shell, hole–shell, and controllable multicompartment particles, is provided. The critical analysis of the current status and existing challenges is also conducted, and the future development in the emerging fields by microfluidic emulsification is envisioned. The remarkable control function over the functional material formation process enabled by droplet microfluidic emulsification approaches can lead to the efficient and one‐step encapsulation of active substances in microparticles, with the microparticle characteristics well regulated. In comparison to the conventional fabrication methods, droplet microfluidic technology can not only construct microparticles with various shapes, but also provide excellent templates, which enrich and expand the application fields of microparticles. For instance, intersection with disciplines in pharmacy, life sciences, and others, modifying the structure of microspheres and appending functional materials can be completed in the preparation of microparticles. The as‐prepared polymer particles have great potential in a wide range of applications for chemical analysis, heavy metal adsorption, and detection. This review systematically introduces the devices and basic principles of particle preparation using droplet microfluidic technology and discusses the research of functional microparticle formation with high monodispersity, involving a plethora of types including spherical, nonspherical, and Janus type, as well as core–shell, hole–shell, and controllable multicompartment particles. Moreover, this review paper also exhibits a critical analysis of the current status and existing challenges, and outlook of the future development in the emerging fields has been discussed.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. The polymer/nano-inorganics composite microsphere possesses excellent application prospects, but it is difficult to resolve the problem of the aggregation of nano-inorganic particles in polymer and the affinity between inorganics and polymer matrix. In this study, the preparation and characterization of polystyrene (PS)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/CaCO3 microspheres fabricated via a novel phase inversion emulsion process are described. By this one-pot method, the PS/EVA/CaCO3 microspheres are obtained by firstly converting styrene monomer containing EVA and nano CaCO3 into droplets dispersed in water with help of emulsifiers and a following polymerization. Because the inorganic nanoparticles are ultrasonically dispersed in liquid monomer mixture before the polymerization, the aggregation of nano-inorganic particles could be prevented to a great extent. The EVA is designed to enhance toughness of polystyrene matrix and increase the affinity between polymer and inorganic particles. The morphological structure of PS/EVA/CaCO3 microspheres is that nano CaCO3 particles are embedded both in the interior and on the surface of the microspheres. The micro-sized PS/EVA/CaCO3 microspheres showed a significantly improved mechanical property and a better heat resistance. This technique also offers the possibility for fabricating many kinds of new and useful polymer/inorganic microspheres with tailored performance by using special monomers and inorganic particles.

Abstract:Nanoprecipitation is a flexible method to prepare biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs) for drug delivery and so on. However, it is generally hard to co-precipitate multiple polymers due to their different solvent solubility. Here, shellac/PLA/PS trimer NPs are prepared for the first time via one-step co-precipitation upon rapid solvent exchange and controlled phase separation. The morphology of shellac/PLA/PS NPs strongly depends on the interfacial tensions between different phases and could be tuned by the molecular surfactant added in the continuous aqueous phase. Since co-precipitation is a fast process, a high temperature is preferred for the system to reach the thermal equilibrium state; otherwise, the system may kinetically be locked in an intermediate state. The influences of polymer molecular weight and interfacial tension are also investigated in detail to reveal the underlying mechanisms of preparing shellac/PLA/PS trimer NPs with linear or triangular structures. This study will shield new light on the design and preparation of NPs with more diverse compositions and more complex structures via one-step co-precipitation and controlled phase separation and further expand the potential applications of NPs.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of polymersomes, protein-blended polymersomes, and polymeric microcapsules using droplet microfluidics. Polymersomes with uniform, single bilayers and controlled diameters are assembled from water-in-oil-in-water double-emulsion droplets. This technique relies on adjusting the interfacial energies of the droplet to completely separate the polymer-stabilized inner core from the oil shell. Protein-blended polymersomes are prepared by dissolving protein in the inner and outer phases of polymer-stabilized droplets. Cell-sized polymeric microcapsules are assembled by size reduction in the inner core through osmosis followed by evaporation of the middle phase. All methods are developed and validated using the same glass-capillary microfluidic apparatus. This integrative approach not only demonstrates the versatility of our setup, but also holds significant promise for standardizing and customizing the production of polymer-based artificial cells.
