Abstract:Assembly is one of the most labor-intensive processes in the manufacturing industry, especially for machinery and plant engineering, bearing enormous potentials for economic optimization. On the other hand, more and more companies struggle to find adequate, qualified employees in sufficient numbers. Thus, the economic and process risks involved here are on the rise. Hence, digital support systems have become a hot topic for worker support in assembly tasks. A wide range of tools and systems with differing support approaches and architectures has been developed and released to the market in the last years. While improvements in e.g. process speed have been achieved, cognitive stress, user acceptance and thus failure rates can take a contradictory development. In this paper, we thus present a field study conducted in our connected learning factory in Gummersbach, Germany comparing different digital assembly assistance systems with a wide range of initial cost, efforts for set-up and maintenance as well as level of guidance. As could be observed, different goal parameters show diverging, sometimes even contradictory development, thus necessitating a trade off when selecting the most suitable approach or system
