Abstract:In the present work, we report a greener and efficient process of hydrothermal conversion of rice straw (Cd low accumulated crop) and Elsholtzia splendens (Cu accumulated plant) to recover the metals and simultaneously produce biofuel for harmless treatment and resource reuse. The impacts of different types of additives, raw materials/solvent ratios, reaction times, and temperatures are investigated, and the composition of solid phase left is also studied for future efficient use. As the results suggest, almost all enriched metals (95 +/- 2% of Cu in E. splendens and almost all Cd in rice straw) are concentrated in solid phase after hydrothermal conversion with a considerable amount of carbohydrates contained, making the solid residue an excellent material for producing metal carbide catalysts. During the hydrothermal conversion, the additives have little impact on the metals recovery, and higher raw material/solvent ratios have higher yields of Cu/Cd. Finally, 22.0-25.0% yields of bio-oils without any metals are achieved with a high heating value (>= 35.2 MJ/kg) for both types of plants. This work creates new opportunities for the full utilization of heavy metal accumulated plants to remediate heavy metal contaminated land without any waste and pollution.
Study on Electrical Resistivity of Rice Straw Charcoal

Abstract:Electromagnetic pollution is a problem of growing concern. In this paper, rice straw, a typical agricultural residue in China, was carbonized to produce charcoal of low electrical resistivity in a lab-scale fixed-bed reactor. This is a potentially cheap and sustainable substitute for metals to produce electromagnetic shielding materials. When the final temperature was increased from 400 to 900 degrees C, the electrical resistivity decreased from similar to 10(6) Omega . cm to 2 Omega . cm; when it was increased to 1200 or 1400 degrees C, the electrical resistivity was reduced further to 0.43 or 0.4 Omega . cm , respectively. Prolonging the residence time from 30 to 240 min could decrease the electrical resistivity from 2.38 to 1.79 Omega . cm at 900 degrees C. In experiments with catalytic carbonization, Fe(NO3)(3) reduced the electrical resistivity to 0.29 Omega . cm at 900 degrees C for a 50:1 straw: catalyst ratio, while Fe2O3 was unsuccessful as a catalyst. Catalytic carbonization is preferable to increasing temperature or prolonging time as a means of producing rice straw charcoal of low electrical resistivity.

Abstract:Advanced magnetic carbon composites with high specific surface area and high microporosity are required for both environmentally and agriculturally related applications. However, more research is needed for the development of a facile and highly efficient synthesis process. In the present work, a novel approach of simultaneous activation and magnetization is proposed for the fabrication of magnetic carbon composites via the thermal pyrolysis of hydrochar (i.e., a solid residue from a hydrothermal carbonization process) that has been pretreated with mixtures of ferric chloride (FeCl3) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2). The main objective of this study is the investigation of the variation of characteristics of magnetic carbon composites produced at various conditions, as well as triclosan (TCS) adsorption behavior on such composites. This presented simple one-step synthesis method has the following advantages: (a) the hydrochar is activated with high surface area and pore volume (up to 1351 m(2)/g and 0.549 cm(3)/g, respectively), (b) activation and magnetization are simultaneously achieved without further modification, (c) the magnetic particles (γ-Fe2O3) are stable under an acidic medium (pH of 3.0 and 4.0), and (d) the products have the potential to remove TCS from aqueous solutions with a maximum adsorption capacity of 892.9 mg/g. The results indicate the effectiveness of this facile synthesis strategy in converting low-value biowaste into a functional material with high performance for pollutant removal from aqueous solutions.
Effective removal of tetracycline antibiotics from water by magnetic functionalized biochar derived from rice waste.

Abstract:The effective removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) from water is of great significance and remains a big challenge. In this work, a novel magnetized biochar (magnetic functionalized carbon microsphere, MF-CMS) was prepared by the coupling hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis activation of starch-rich rice waste using ZnCl2 and FeCl3 as activators. As the MF-CMS dose was 2.0 g/L, the initial concentration of TCs was 100 mg/L, the removal rates of tetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline were 96.02%, 96.10%, 96.52%, and 85.88%, respectively. The best modeled on pseudo second order, Langmuir adsorption model, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models suggested that both chemisorption and physisorption occurred in all removal processes, in which chemisorption dominated. TCs were efficiently adsorbed through the combined effects of pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π interactions, and complexation reactions of surface functional groups (such as γ-Fe2O3 and FeOOH). The removal rates of TCs after five cycles approximately decreased by 20%. And the cycling and metal ion release experiments of MF-CMS indicated that MF-CMS had good reusability, stability, and safety. The estimated cost of preparing MF-CMS is 5.91 USD per kg, and 1 kg of MF-CMS (consuming 8 kg of waste rice) can approximately treat 0.55 tons of TCs wastewater. Overall, the magnetic biochar derived from starch-rich rice waste as an adsorbent has promising and effective for the removal of TCs from water, but also provides a new idea for the resourceful treatment of solid waste.

Abstract:The process parameters of microwave-induced hydrothermal carbonization (MIHTC) play an important role on the hydrothermal chars (hydrochar) yield. The effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, particle size and biomass to water ratio was optimized for hydrochar yield by modeling using the central composite design (CCD). Further, the rice straw and hydrochar at optimum conditions have been characterized for energy, chemical, structural and thermal properties. The optimum condition for hydrochar synthesis was found to be at a 180 °C reaction temperature, a 20 min reaction time, a 1:15 weight per volume (w/v) biomass to water ratio and a 3 mm particle size, yielding 57.9% of hydrochar. The higher heating value (HHV), carbon content and fixed carbon values increased from 12.3 MJ/kg, 37.19% and 14.37% for rice straw to 17.6 MJ/kg, 48.8% and 35.4% for hydrochar. The porosity, crystallinity and thermal stability of the hydrochar were improved remarkably compared to rice straw after MIHTC. Two characteristic peaks from XRD were observed at 2θ of 15° and 26°, whereas DTG peaks were observed at 50⁻150 °C and 300⁻350 °C for both the materials. Based on the results, it can be suggested that the hydrochar could be potentially used for adsorption, carbon sequestration, energy and agriculture applications.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of waste biomass for the production of bio-oil and hydrochar (a solid residue from HTL process). However, hydrochar possesses limited porosity and surface area, hindering its environmental application. In the present work, to promote the development of a sustainable application of waste biomass, waste hydrochar was activated and modified to a novel magnetic carbon composite, which exhibited high performance for dye removal from aqueous solutions. The composite possessed a saturation magnetization of 38.5 emu g(-1) at room temperature and could be facilely attracted from an aqueous solution by an external magnet. The as-prepared composite exhibited a superior malachite green (MG) adsorption capacity (476 mg g(-1)), which was much higher than the known magnetic adsorbents. Our results suggested that the waste hydrochar could be efficiently transformed to a high-performance sustainable material for dye removal.

Abstract:The large-scale resource utilization of coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) and the decontamination of wastewater through the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process of biomass are crucial for the production of clean fuels. In this study, the residual carbon in CGFS was recovered by froth flotation, and the HTC of rice straw was carried out with different addition amounts of residual carbon and hydrothermal temperatures. The physicochemical structure and fuel properties of hydrochar as well as water quality indicators of hydrothermal wastewater were carefully explored. The results showed that the combustion reactivity of residual carbon was significantly improved, implying an obvious synergistic effect after inducing HTC of rice straw. In addition, the wastewater produced by rice straw HTC was dark brown and contained high concentration of complex organic substances. The addition of residual carbon significantly improved the water quality of hydrothermal wastewater by removing organic matter. The abundant pore structure of the residual carbon can adsorb the organic molecules in the aqueous phase and induce their polymerization and conversion into hydrochar, thereby reducing the concentration of organic compounds in the wastewater and improving the water quality. At the same time, it can also adsorb potassium metal ion dissolved in the aqueous phase by rice straw. Hydrochar formed on the surface of residual carbon has lower aromatic condensation degree and more carbon defects, which can provide more reaction sites. In addition, the alkali metal adsorbed on residual carbon has a catalytic effect. All the above factors contribute to the synergistic effect of combustion reaction.

Abstract:Abstract Biomass activated carbon has been widely used in the field of wastewater treatment because of its unique properties, such as high specific surface area and porosity, good adsorption capacity, good mechanical strength, rich functional groups and thermal stability. In this work, highland barley straw is recycled and made into activated carbon using hydrothermal carbonization and alkaline activation processes in which the dependence of the product properties on the activation temperature, as one of the critical parameters, is intensively investigated. Under the optimum conditions at an activation temperature of 1100 °C, activated carbon in the form of mesoporous structure and polycrystalline graphite was produced with a specific surface area as large as 1906 m2/g, which is superior to that of commercial products. To investigate the absorption capacity of the prepared samples for pollutants in water, such as heavy metals and organics, potassium dichromate and methylene blue were utilized as the simulated pollutants. The removal efficiency of Cr6+ and methylene blue in water reached 90.3 % within eight hours and 87.7 % within four hours, respectively, and this demonstrated an excellent absorption capacity for activated carbon converted from agricultural waste. Th e successful fabrication of activated carbon with a super large specific surface area and remarkable adsorption ability derived from highland barley straw through a hydrothermal carbonization and alkaline treatment demonstrated the feasibility of the “turning waste into wealth” recycling strategy. It has also shown great potential for use in environmental protection applications, especially for water purification.

Abstract:Crop straw containing abundant carbohydrates and metals is regarded as an ideal precursor for preparing hydrothermal carbonization carbon (HTCC)-based photocatalysts, but the inherent role of native metals on the photocatalytic performance of HTCC remains unclear. Herein, HTCC derived from corn straw (HTCS) catalyzed by native trace metals was prepared by a green hydrothermal process for photocatalytic removal of antibiotics. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation kinetic constant ( k ) over HTCS was 5.4 times that of g-C 3 N 4 . The results showed the native Ca (0.56%), Mn (0.023%) and Fe (0.055%) in corn straw should catalyze the formation of HTCS, and then promote the photocatalytic SMX removal over HTCS. Pure carbohydrate experiments certified that the Mn and Ca additions could modify the structure of HTCC. More surface CO formation and furan rings polymerization originated by Ca and Mn catalysis in hydrothermal process. Surface C O provided electron-deficient connection sites for SMX to form HTCS-SMX complex, and then complex was excited under visible light illumination to transfer electrons from SMX's HOMO to CB of HTCS. Ploymerized furan rings promoted electron transfer in the process. This work provides a green conversion way from waste (agriculture residue) to treasure (efficient carbon-based materials) for water purification.

Abstract:Corn straw, a typical agricultural waste, was directly converted into hydrochar with a yield of 77.56% by hydrothermal carbonization at 140–230 °C for 2 h with a solid–liquid ratio of 1:20. The morphology and surface properties were characterized by elemental analysis, specific surface area and pore size analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that with the increase of hydrothermal reaction temperature, some physical and chemical properties such as the increase of hydrocarbon content, crystallinity, and specific surface area of hydrochar changed significantly. A series of chemical reactions such as dehydration, decarboxylation, and aromatization occurred in the hydrothermal carbonization process so that the prepared hydrochar had rich oxygen-containing functional groups (-HO, C-O-C, C=O) and unique porous structure made the hydrochar prepared at 170 °C had the best removal effect on Cd2+ in solution (5.84 mg/g). These specific conditions could remove Cd2+ and greatly improve the adsorption performance. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model could better describe the adsorption behavior of Cd2+. Therefore, corn straw hydrochar as a potential adsorbent for removing Cd2+ from water.

Biochar derived from straw residue prepared via combined pre-treatment designed for efficient removal of tetracycline hydrochloride and sulfadiazine sodium salt

Abstract:In this study, straw residue (SR) was prepared from corn straw by a combined pre-treatment method that involved both microbial treatment (Myrothecium verrucaria, Aspergillus niger, and Trichoderma reesei) and treatment with ρ-toluenesulfonic acid. After pre-treatment, the cellulose content of the residues reached 79.3 %, 72.1 %, 83.5 %, and 85.2 %, respectively. The results indicated that Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma reesei effectively destroyed the corn stover structure, improving the efficiency of the subsequent treatment. Following carbonation and activation processes, the SRs were converted into a series of biochars (ACCC, ACMC, ACTC, and ACNC) with large specific surface areas (2343, 2219, 2693, 2672 m2 g-1). The prepared biochars demonstrated excellent performance in adsorption tests performed using tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and sulfadiazine sodium salt (SDZ) as adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacities recorded for TC (908, 1117, 1216, and 1189 mg/g) and SDZ (930, 965, 1033, and 1083 mg/g) were higher than most of the other adsorbents. Furthermore, the potential adsorption mechanisms included pore filling, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction. Even after 5 test cycles, the biochar retained over 75 % of its adsorption performance, highlighting its strong potential for applications in removing antibiotics from water.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has been well studied for the bio-oil production from biomass. However, a large amount of wastewater with high organic content is also produced during the HTL process. Therefore, the present study investigated the methane potentials of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (HTLWW) obtained from HTL of rice straw at different temperatures (170–320 °C) and residence times (0.5–4 h). The characteristics (e.g., total organic content, organic species, molecular size distribution, etc.) of the HTLWW were studied, and at the same time, microbial community compositions involved in AD of HTLWW were analyzed.
Co-hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge and rice straw to improve hydrochar quality: Effects of mixing ratio and hydrothermal temperature

Abstract:This study assessed the effects of mass mixing ratio and hydrothermal temperature on the co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) of sewage sludge and rice straw regarding the yield, chemical composition, fuel properties, surface functional groups, and combustion behavior of the hydrochar. The co-HTC increased the hydrochar yield at 180 °C but decreased it at 220 and 260 °C. The co-HTC increased the hydrochar organic matter contents, higher heating values, fuel ratios, and combustion behavior (combustibility index) by 16 % to 63 %, 15 % to 85 %, 51 % to 321 %, and 30 % to 419 %, respectively. The co-HTC also enhanced the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the hydrochar surface. The synergistic and anti-synergistic effects of the co-HTC were more positive at 180 and 220 °C but more negative at 260 °C. The co-HTC of municipal sludge and rice straw is promising in converting waste materials into high-quality hydrochar as a clean solid fuel.

Abstract:The co-pyrolysis of oily sludge with biomass to prepare carbon materials is not only an effective way to mitigate oily sludge pollution, but it is also a method of obtaining carbon materials. In this study, a carbon material (OS-CS AC) was obtained by the direct co-pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) and corn stalks (CS) and then applied to Cr(VI) removal. According to the hydroxy and carboxy masking experiments and the characterization of OS-CS AC by FT-IR, SEM, XPS, XRD, and N 2 physical adsorption–desorption, Cr(VI) can be adsorbed efficiently through pore filling, the surface oxygen-containing functional groups can promote the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) through electron donors, and the greater the electrostatic attraction between the electron-donating functional groups of OS-CS AC and the Cr(VI) is, the stronger the ability to remove Cr(VI). In addition, the removal process was discussed, and the results indicated that the McKay kinetic model, Langmuir isotherm model and Van't Hoff thermodynamic model were the most suitable models for removal. The main factors affecting the removal of Cr(VI) were discussed, and the removal of Cr(VI) reached 99.14%, which gives a comprehensive utilization way of oily sludge and corn stalks.

Characterization of modified rice straw biochar in immobilizing Bacillus subtilis 168 and evaluation on its role as a novel agent for zearalenone-removal delivery

Abstract:Microbial remediation of environmental pollutants can be advanced by carrier based cells immobilization. Whereas the effects of microorganisms immobilized on biochar for removal of zearalenone (ZEN) still remain unknown. Herein, this work presented the characterization of rice straw biochar (RSB) around modification in immobilizing Bacillus subtilis 168 and the role in fighting ZEN in vitro. Specifically, 10% of RSB with pH 5 condition were optimal for bearing cells, where majority of cells loaded inside the pore and minority on surface with agglomeration or scattering status. Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-inclusion RSB showed better performances including over 93% of ZEN detoxification rate (32.48% in free cells), cells preservation, and stability of detoxification in simulated gastrointestinal environment. RSB treated with sulphuric acid made nutrients adsorption generally less than 6.5%. No residues of α-ZEL and α-ZAL were found in ZEN biotransformation process whether by free cells or composites. Mechanism discussion implied that predominant monolayer chemisorption by RSB and subsequent biodegradation by extracellular enzymes from microorganism involved in ZEN-removal process. Collectively, these findings contribute to provide an applying strategy for coordination of biochar and microorganisms as potentially mycotoxin detoxifying agent in agricultural feed bioremediation and environmental decontamination processes.

Abstract:Adsorption has emerged as a promising method for removing polyphenols in water remediation. This work explores chlorogenic acid (CGA) adsorption on zeolite-based magnetic nanocomposites synthesized from rice husk waste. In particular, enhanced adsorbing materials were attained using a hydrothermal zeolite precursor (Z18) synthesized from rice husk and possessing a remarkable specific surface area (217.69 m2 g−1). A composite material was prepared by immobilizing magnetic copper ferrite on Z18 (Z18:CuFe2O4) to recover the zeolite adsorbent. In addition, Z18 was modified (Z18 M) with a mixture of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) to improve the affinity towards organic compounds in the final nanocomposite system (Z18 M:CuFe2O4). While the unmodified composite demonstrated inconsequential CGA removal rates, Z18 M:CuFe2O4 could adsorb 89.35% of CGA within the first hour of operation. Z18 M:CuFe2O4 showed no toxicity for seed germination and achieved a mass recovery of 85% (due to a saturation magnetization of 4.1 emu g−1) when an external magnetic field was applied. These results suggest that adsorbing magnetic nanocomposites are amenable to CGA polyphenol removal from wastewater. Furthermore, the reuse, revalorization, and conversion into value-added materials of agro-industrial waste may allow the opportunity to implement sustainability and work towards a circular economy.

Abstract:To enhance the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process on biomass waste and improve the quality of biomass solid fuel. Corn straw was pretreated with acid washing and subsequently hydrothermally carbonized at 180–270 °C. The solid product obtained (hydrochars) was compared with the solid product produced from untreated hydrothermally carbonized straw. The results show that the acid pretreatment removed 7.9% of the ash from the straw. ICP and XRD analysis show that most of the alkali and alkaline earth metals have been removed. This addresses the defect of high ash content as the HTC temperature increases. The HHV of hydrochars produced by HTC after acid washing can reach 27.7 MJ/kg, which is nearly 10% higher than that of hydrochars prepared without acid washing pretreatment, and nearly 70% higher than that of straw raw materials. Elemental analysis and FTIR analysis show that the acid washing pretreatment changed the content and structure of the biomass components in the straw, resulting in a more complete HTC reaction and higher carbon sequestration. The decrease of H/C and O/C deepened the degree of coal-like transformation of hydrochars, with the lowest approaching the bituminous coal zone. The combustion characteristics of the hydrochars prepared after acid washing were significantly upgraded, the comprehensive combustion index and thermal stability of hydrochars both increased. Therefore, HTC after acid washing pretreatment is beneficial to further improve the high heating value and combustion characteristics of hydrochar.

Abstract:The effect of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) and alkaline thermal pretreatment (TA) at mild temperature in the solid state was comparatively studied, through the analysis of physicochemical properties of rice straw and its biogas production during anaerobic digestion. The results indicated that TA visibly increased the biogas yield from HTP. The accumulative biogas production of volatile solids was the highest for TA3 up to 411.1 mL/g VS, in which increased 24.04% compared to control. Therefore, the use of TA is more favorable to improve biogas production rates of anaerobic fermentation with rice straw than HTP, however, the additives of calcium hydroxide are too high, but it is not conducive to promoting the biogas yield of rice straw. The best additives amount of Ca (OH)2 was 2% to consider the cost of pretreatment with straw. The research results provide technical support for pretreatment of anaerobic fermentation of lingo-cellulosic materials such as straw.

Abstract:In this study, discarded cigarette butts were used as a precursor for preparing magnetic porous biochar with a facile annealing method. The magnetic porous biochar was applied to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for TCH, which was much higher than various similar materials reported. At the same time, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of TCH were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order models and Freundlich models, respectively. The thermodynamics experiments proved that the adsorption on magnetic porous biochar was an endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was explored, and the outstanding adsorption ability was mainly dependent on the pore filling effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interaction. By using the magnetic porous biochar, the real water samples were treated and high removal efficiency to TCH was obtained. What's more, the excellent reusability endowed the magnetic porous biochar with great potential as adsorbents for practical application.
