Abstract: We use the remarkable distance estimate of Ilya Kachkovskiy and Yuri Safarov, to show that if $H$ is a nonseparable Hilbert space and $K$ is any closed ideal in $B(H)$ that is not the ideal of compact operators, then any normal element of $B(H)/K$ can be lifted to a normal element of $B(H)$.

Abstract:We prove that the skew Calabi-Yau property is preserved under normal extension for locally finite positively graded algebras. We also obtain a homological identity which describes the relationship between the Nakayama automorphisms of skew Calabi-Yau locally finite positively graded algebras and their normal extensions. As a preliminary, we show that the Nakayama automorphisms of skew Calabi-Yau algebras always send a regular normal element to a multiple of itself by a unit.

Abstract:Let x,y be two normal elements in a unital simple C⁎-algebra A. We introduce a function Dc(x,y) and show that in a unital simple AF-algebra there is a constant 1>C>0 such thatC⋅Dc(x,y)≤dist(U(x),U(y))≤Dc(x,y), where U(x) and U(y) are the closures of the unitary orbits of x and of y, respectively. We also generalize this to unital simple C⁎-algebras with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated K0-group. More complicated estimates are given in the presence of non-trivial K1-information.
Lifting Brownian-type operators with subnormal entry

Abstract:In this paper, we study Brownian-type operators, which are upper triangular $2\times 2$ block matrix operators with entries satisfying some algebraic constraints. We establish a lifting theorem stating that any Brownian-type operator with subnormal $(2,2)$ entry lifts to a Brownian-type operator with normal $(2,2)$ entry, where lifting is understood in the sense of extending entries of the block matrices representing the operators in question. The spectral inclusion and the filling in holes theorems are obtained for such operators.

Abstract:Let A and C be two unital simple C∗-algebras with tracial rank zero. Suppose that C is amenable and satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. Denote by KKe(C,A)++ the set of those κ in KK(C,A) for which κ(K0(C)+∖{0})⊂K0(A)+∖{0} and κ([1C])=[1A]. Suppose that κ∈KKe(C,A)++. We show that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that [ϕ]=κ. Suppose that C is a unital AH-algebra and λ:T(A)→Tf(C) is a continuous affine map for which τ(κ([p]))=λ(τ)(p) for all projections p in all matrix algebras of C and any τ∈T(A), where T(A) is the simplex of tracial states of A and Tf(C) is the convex set of faithful tracial states of C. We prove that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that ϕ induces both κ and λ. Suppose that h:C→A is a unital monomorphism and γ∈Hom(K1(C),Aff(A)). We show that there exists a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that [ϕ]=[h] in KK(C,A), τ○ϕ=τ○h for all tracial states τ and the associated rotation map can be given by γ. Denote by KKT(C,A)++ the set of compatible pairs (κ,λ), where κ∈KLe(C,A)++ and λ is a continuous affine map from T(A) to Tf(C). Together with a result on asymptotic unitary equivalence in [H. Lin, Asymptotic unitary equivalence and asymptotically inner automorphisms, arXiv:math/0703610, 2007], this provides a bijection from the asymptotic unitary equivalence classes of unital monomorphisms from C to A to (KKT(C,A)++,Hom(K1(C),Aff(T(A)))/R0), where R0 is a subgroup related to vanishing rotation maps. As an application, combining these results with a result of W. Winter [W. Winter, Localizing the Elliott conjecture at strongly self-absorbing C∗-algebras, arXiv:0708.0283v3, 2007], we show that two unital amenable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras are isomorphic if they have the same Elliott invariant and the tensor products of these C∗-algebras with any UHF-algebra have tracial rank zero. In particular, if A and B are two unital separable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras with unique tracial states which are inductive limits of C∗-algebras of type I, then they are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic Elliott invariants.

Abstract:We aim to find conditions on two Hilbert space operators $A$ and $B$ under which the expression $AX-XB$ having low rank forces the operator $X$ itself to admit a good low rank approximation. It is known that this can be achieved when $A$ and $B$ are normal and have well-separated spectra. In this paper, we relax this normality condition, using the idea of operator dilations. The basic problem then becomes the lifting of Sylvester equations, which is reminiscent of the classical commutant lifting theorem and its variations. Our approach also allows us to show that the (factored) alternating direction implicit method for solving Sylvester equaftions $AX-XB=C$ does not require too many iterations, even without requiring $A$ to be normal.

A harmonic analysis approach to essential normality of principal submodules

Abstract:Guo and the second author have shown that the closure [I] in the Drury–Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal I in C[z1,…,zn] is essentially normal. In this note, the authors extend this result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten p-class for p>n. The same is true for modules generated by polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Further, the maximal ideal space XI of the resulting C⁎-algebra for the quotient module is shown to be contained in Z(I)∩∂Bn, where Z(I) is the zero variety for I, and to contain all points in ∂Bn that are limit points of Z(I)∩Bn. Finally, the techniques introduced enable one to study a certain class of weight Bergman spaces on the ball.

Abstract:Let A be a unital separable simple C⁎-algebra with tracial rank zero and let x,y∈A be two normal elements. We show that x is in the closure of the convex hull of the unitary orbit of y if and only if there exists a sequence of unital completely positive linear maps φn from A to A such that the sequence φn(y) converges to x in norm and also approximately preserves the trace values. A purely measure theoretical description for normal elements in the closure of the convex hull of unitary orbit of y is also given. In the case that A has a unique tracial state some classical results about the closure of the convex hull of the unitary orbits in von Neumann algebras are proved to hold in the C⁎-algebraic setting.

Abstract:Let 0 → I → A → A/I → 0 be a short exact sequence of C *-algebras with A unital. Suppose that the extension 0 → I → A → A/I → 0 is quasidiagonal, then it is shown that any positive element (projection, partial isometry, unitary element, respectively) in A/I has a lifting with the same form which commutes with some quasicentral approximate unit of I consisting of projections. Furthermore, it is shown that for any given positive number ε, two positive elements (projections, partial isometries, unitary elements, respectively) a̅,b̅ in A/I , and a positive element (projection, partial isometry, unitary element, respectively) a which is a lifting of a̅ , there is a positive element (projection, partial isometry, unitary element, respectively) b in A which is a lifting of b̅ such that ∥ a − b ∥ < a̅ - b̅ + ε . As an application, it is shown that for any positive numbers ε and u̅ in U ( A/I ) 0 , there exists u in U ( A ) 0 which is a lifting of u̅ such that cel( u ) < cel (u̅) + ε .

Abstract:In this paper we discuss lifting laws which, roughly, are ways of "lifting" elements of the open orbit of one prehomogeneous vector space to elements of the minimal nonzero orbit of another prehomogeneous vector space. We prove a handful of these lifting laws, and show how they can be used to help solve certain problems in arithmetic invariant theory. Of the results contained in this article are twisted versions of certain parametrization theorems of Bhargava.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:We show that every element of $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})$ can be lifted to an element of $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ of norm at most $Cq^2\log q$, while there exists an element such that every lift of it is of norm at least $q^{2+o(1)}$. This should be compared to the recent result that almost every element has a lift of norm bounded by $q^{1+1/n+o(1)}$. The main step in the proof is showing that for every $q$, there is a small element in $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^\times$ with a large $n$-th root, which is a result of independent interest.

Abstract:The normal cohomology functor Ext(N) is introduced from the category of all normal Hilbert modules over the ball algebra to the category of A(B)-modules. From the calculation of Ext(N)-groups, we show that every normal C(partial derivative B)-extension of a normal Hilbert module (viewed as a Hilbert module over A(B)) is normal projective and normal injective. It follows that there is a natural isomorphism between Hom of normal Shilov modules and that of their quotient modules, which is a new lifting theorem of normal Shilov modules. Finally, these results are applied to the discussion of rigidity and extensions of Hardy submodules over the ball algebra.
Essential Normality of Cyclic Submodule Generated by any Polynomial

Abstract:In \cite{GW} Guo and the second author showed that the closure $[I]$ in the Drury-Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal $I$ in $\mathbb{C}[z_1,...,z_n]$ is essentially normal. The proof exploited combinatorial relations between the weights of the shift operators on the space. One can show that their result extends to the Bergman space for the ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ and closely related spaces, but thus far no one has been able to extend the result to other ideals in pursuit of the conjecture of Arveson \cite{Ar2}. In this note, the authors use techniques from harmonic analysis involving the radial derivative and the complex tangential derivative \cite{Gr} to extend the result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten $p $-class for $p>n$. The same is true for polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Moreover, the maximal ideal space $X_I$ of the resulting $C^\ast$-algebra for the quotient module is shown to be contained in $Z(I)\cap \partial\mathbb{B}_n$, where $Z(I)$ is the zero variety for $I$, and to contain all points in $\partial\mathbb{B}_n$ that are limit points of $Z(I)\cap \mathbb{B}_n$. As a consequence, $X_I=Z(I)\cap \partial\mathbb{B}_n$ in the case that $I$ is quasi-homogeneous. Finally, the techniques introduced enable one to study a certain class of weight Bergman spaces on the ball.

Abstract:For every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis consider the Banach algebra $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ of all diagonal operators that are of the form $\lambda I + K$. We prove that $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ is a Calkin algbra i.e., there exists a Banach space $\mathcal{Y}_X$ so that the Calkin algebra of $\mathcal{Y}_X$ is isomorphic as a Banach algebra to $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$. Among other applications of this theorem we obtain that certain hereditarily indecomposable spaces and the James spaces $J_p$ and their duals endowed with natural multiplications are Calkin algebras, that all non-reflexive Banach spaces with unconditional bases are isomorphic as Banach spaces to Calkin algebras, and that sums of reflexive spaces with unconditional bases with certain James-Tsirelson type spaces are isomorphic as Banach spaces to Calkin algebras.

Abstract:It is established that the relationships between Weyl's theorem, Browder's theorem, generalized Weyl's theorem and generalized Browder's theorem in a semiprime Banach algebra . We prove that if the commutant of contains a left or right injective quasinilpotent element, then f ( a ) satisfies Weyl's theorem for f belongs to , the set of analytic functions on a neighborhood of . It is shown that the accumulation points of the spectrum of an element in are invariant under any commuting perturbation f such that for some . This result provides a positive answer to Question 2.8 in (Linear Multilinear Algebra 64(2):247–257, 2016), and it is then applied to investigate the perturbations of Weyl's theorem and generalized Weyl's theorem. It is also shown that if a is a hyponormal element (that is, ) in a algebra and , then f ( a ) satisfies Weyl's theorem. If additionally is primitive then f ( a ) obeys generalized Weyl's theorem. We also consider some other interesting properties of hyponormal elements in C* algebras, including simply polaroidness, topological divisor of zero, self-adjointness of the spectral projection with respect to , and the spectral mapping theorem of the Weyl spectrum.
