Abstract:Since graphene was discovered, the biomimetic materials with laminated structure (such as, shellfish) had become one of the research-hot fields. Chitosan comes from shellfish, and was considered as a very promising abundant natural biopolymer. It holds not only outstanding mechanical properties, film-forming technology and low cost, but also has good applications in environmental fields due to its excellent adsorption properties to a broad range of organic pollutants and some heavy metal ions. Preparation of biomimetic materials with laminated structure utilizing chitosan have many advantages, however, to improve functional properties of chitosan based biomimetic materials is still a great challenge. Graphene has various applications, including storage energy devices, hydrogen production with photo-catalysts, and environmental fields because of its high charge mobility and good mechanical properties. However, graphene and its oxide have difficult re-dispersion properties in fabrication of nanocomposite. In this paper, the nanosheets stacking of metal oxide and grapheme oxide with aid of chitosan was carried out. Several characterizations were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. Photocatalytic tests were examined by selecting typical organic pollutants. The photoconductivity response of nanocomposite film to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were investigated based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that the organic-inorganic film not only had wide visible light and NIR (near-infrared) responses, but also had good removal ability to organic pollutants. The nanocomposite film also exhibited clearly photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser. It would be potential good applications in self-cleaning film, nanocoating, et al.
Dispersion of Graphene Oxide in Polyvinylidene Difluoride and Its Improvement of Photoresponse Properties of Nanocomposite

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) and its nanocomposites are widely used in energy storage devices, membrane separation, multi-functional materials due to their good charge transferring property and excellent mechanical, physical, chemical properties. The performances of materials and devices are strongly dependent on the dispersion effects of GO in matrix. In the applications of polymer/GO nanocomposites, the re-dispersion of dried GO in matrix with good effects is still having some difficulties. Good dispersion of GO solution with polymer aqueous would be obtained easily. However, the dispersion of GO solution in non-aqueous polymers is still a great challenge. In this paper, attempts of the dispersion of GO solution in non-aqueous polymers were carried out with oil/water interface mixed approach. In the study, PVDF [poly-(vinylidene difluoride)] selected as representative polymer is based on the following reason. PVDF is a well-known organic multi-functional polymer, which is widely used in several devices due to its outstanding piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and dielectric performance. PVDF/GO nanocomposites were obtained with interface blend, and a series of characterizations were performed. The photoconductive responses to weak visible light and 808 nm NIR (near infrared) were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible polymer film substrate with casting method. The results indicate that the GO has good dispersion in PVDF matrix and no obvious aggregation of GO is observed. The resulting nanocomposite exhibits good photo-switching behavior to visible light, while the response and recovery are very rapidly. The response to weak 808 nm NIR is relatively weak, this may be the results of PVDF possessing some absorbance to NIR. It can be seen that an intelligent composite film with external stimuli responses is developed and can be used in many fields, such as electronic skin, sensors and actuators, information storage, artificial muscle, biomimetic films, membrane separation controlled with external stimuli.

Abstract:To take full advantage of sunlight for photomechanical materials, NIR-vis-UV light-responsive actuator films of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were fabricated. The strategy is based on phase transition of LCs from nematic to isotropic phase induced by combination of photochemical and photothermal processes in the PDLC/GO nanocomposites. Upon mechanical stretching of the film, both topological shape change and mesogenic alignment occurred in the separated LC domains, enabling the film to respond to NIR-vis-UV light. The homodispersed GO flakes act as photoabsorbent and nanoscale heat source to transfer NIR or VIS light into thermal energy, heating the film and photothermally inducing phase transition of LC microdomains. By utilizing photochemical phase transition of LCs upon UV-light irradiation, one azobenzene dye was incorporated into the LC domains, endowing the nanocomposite films with UV-responsive property. Moreover, the light-responsive behaviors can be well-controlled by adjusting the elongation ratio upon mechanical treatment. The NIR-vis-UV light-responsive PDLC/GO nanocomposite films exhibit excellent properties of easy fabrication, low-cost, and good film-forming and mechanical features, promising their numerous applications in the field of soft actuators and optomechanical systems driven directly by sunlight.

Abstract:The recent emergence of liquid crystals of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials not only has allowed us to explore novel phenomena of macroscopically aligned 2D nanomaterials but also has provided a route toward their controlled assembly into three-dimensional functional macrostructures. Using flow-induced mechanical alignment, we prepared flakes of graphene oxide (GO) in different orientational orders and demonstrated that GO liquid crystals (LC) can be used as rewritable media for reflective displays without polarizing optics. With a wire or stick as a pen, we can make the surface of GO LC reflective and bright, and we can then manually draw lines, curves, and any patterns with dark appearance. The contrast between bright and dark features is due to anisotropic optical responses of ordered GO flakes. Since optical anisotropy is an intrinsic property of 2D structures, our observations and demonstration represent one of many potential applications of macroscopically aligned 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract:Photoresponsive lamina and flexible graphene oxide/polymer nanocomposite films were fabricated using a simple solution casting method. Fast, stable, and reversible photomechanical behavior of the nanocomposite films upon irradiation with visible light was observed based on the photothermal effect of graphene oxide and the shape memory effect of the polymer matrix. According to the principle of equilibrium apparatus, light-powered tumbler movement was achieved in these films by imitating the structure of a wobbly man. Although photodriven contraction, expansion, bending, twisting, oscillation, and cilia movement have been realized in photomechanical materials, novel forms of complicated motion are still a bottleneck problem limiting their practical applications. This work would have a significant impact on photomechanical materials in device applications for advanced functions.
Polymer-Derived Carbon Nanofiber and Its Photocurrent-Switching Responses of Carbon Nanofiber/Cu Nanocomposite in Wide Ranges of Excited Light Wavelength

Abstract:Transformation into electric or photoelectric functional composite from non-conjugated polymers is a great challenge due to the presence of a large number of locative states. In this paper, carbon nanofiber was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose as a precursor, and the carbon nanofiber/Cu nanocomposite was constructed for defect passivation. The results indicated that the resulting nanocomposites exhibited good absorbance in visible light range and NIR (near-infrared). The photoconductive responses to typical weak visible light (650 nm et al.) and NIR (808, 980, and 1064 nm) were studied based on Au gap electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The results exhibited that the nanocomposite’s solid thick film showed photocurrent-switching behaviors to visible light and NIR, the switch-ratio was depending on the wavelengths and power of incident lights. The positive and negative photoconductance responses phenomenon was observed in different compositions and changing excited wavelengths. Their photophysical mechanisms were discussed. This illustrated that the nanocomposites easily produce free electrons and holes via low power of incident light. Free electrons and holes could be utilized for different purposes in multi-disciplinary fields. It would be a potential application in broadband flexible photodetectors, artificial vision, simulating retina, and bio-imaging from visible light to NIR. This is a low-cost and green approach to obtain nanocomposite exhibiting good photocurrent response from the visible range to NIR.

Abstract:Photoresponsive behaviors are studied in hybrid liquid-crystalline (LC) films prepared with light-responsive LC polymer microparticles as dopants using photoinert polymers as a host material. Upon mechanical stretching, both topological shape change and mesogenic alignment occur in the LC polymer microparticles, enabling the polymer-dispersed LC (PDLC)-like films to bend toward a light source upon UV irradiation. The rough morphologies of the hydrophobic LC microparticles enhance their interactions with hydrophilic polymer substrates. The bilayer-like structures of the hybrid film formed in the fabrication processes are responsible for the photomechanical behavior, which is reversibly controlled by combing light irradiation with the stretching processes.

Abstract:The picture shows an illustration of polymer-dispersed LC (PDLC)-like films showing interesting photomechanical properties. The PDLC-like films are easily fabricated with LC polymer microparticles as guests and photoinert polymers as the host. Upon mechanical stretching, both topological shape change and mesogenic alignment occur in the LC polymer microparticles, enabling the obtained films to bend toward the light source upon UV irradiation and directly transferring light into mechanical force. Abstract:An adaptable stimuli responsive system is proposed based on defective graphitic carbon nitride (d‐GCN)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite attached to different substrates. Nitrogen vacancies, introduced during synthesis via potassium doping, act as internal electron donors to enhance the photoreduction of redox dyes for quick reversible photochromism. This system can be applied as visible light responsive rewritable paper that offers high resolution for printed text, rapid activation/recoloration, multicolor functionality, and high cyclability. The defects also inhibit the d‐GCN particle growth resulting in smaller particle sizes over bulk samples, which enable the formation of transparent mechanochromic films. By altering the PVA/d‐GCN ratio in the composites, two mechanical stimuli responses are introduced by taking advantage of wrinkle and crack formation on the film surface. With a low d‐GCN concentration, mechanical scratching of the film causes the formation of surface wrinkles that alter the film transparency without damaging the film, allowing for text to be written on the surface that can be erased by moisture. With a high d‐GCN concentration, cracks developed on the surface scatter light when stretched, enabling the development of a strain dependent smart window. Both these mechanochromisms can be combined with the photochromism to develop multifunctional smart materials with widespread application. A versatile color changing system activated by various stimuli, including light, mechanical scratching, and stretch‐and‐release is reported based on introducing defects into a graphitic carbon nitride photocatalyst composited with polyvinyl alcohol. This dynamic system can be leveraged into multiple applications: 1) light activated rewritable paper; 2) light and mechanical writing surface erased by moisture; 3) color changing smart window.

Abstract:In this study, polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films are obtained via a one-step fabrication technique based on photo-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation in a thiol-vinyl ether reaction. The effects of the compositions of two vinyl monomers, curing light intensity, curing light time, liquid crystal content and thiol content on the electro-optic properties of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal films were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that a composite film with a low driving voltage (33.7 V), high contrast ratio (228.1) and short response time (<5.0 ms) was achieved. This is of great significance for the potential applications of polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) possess some typical liquid properties, such as fluidity, the inability to support shear, and the formation and coalescence of droplets, which exhibit optical, electrical, and magnetic anisotropic properties, and give materials various physical properties. Composite films composed of LCs and polymers have provided a new field of LC science and technology and have attracted great attention over the past years due to their applications in displays, light shutters, fiber-optic communications, switchable windows, photonic crystals, and augmented reality/virtual reality devices. These composite films, such as polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs), polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs), and polymer-dispersed and polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PD&PSLCs), are fabricated by phase separation methods as well as electrospinning and microfluidic techniques. The combination of LCs and polymers will yield a variety of novel characteristics such as switchable optical transmittance, broadband optical reflectivity, excellent optical diffusivity in diffusers for backlight units of liquid-crystal displays, high sensitivity to electric field, magnetic field, and chemical stimulation, and high ion transport speeds for smart windows, microlenses, sensors, actuators, and energy storage devices such as dielectric capacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells, thermoelectric devices, and solid batteries. This Review gives new insights and understanding about LC/polymer composite films that are particularly suitable for large-area electrically switchable windows and multiple related fields.

Abstract:Due to the switchability between transparent and light-scattering states, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are widely used as smart windows, flexible display devices, projectors and other devices. In this work, we propose a new composite system containing TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), liquid crystals and polymer that have low driving voltage, high contrast ratio (CR) and quick response ability. Distinguishing from the traditional PDLC system, the coexisting structure of vertically oriented polymer fibres (VOPFs) inside the porous polymer matrix was constructed and the TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) after functionalisation was introduced. It was found that the introduction of an appropriate amount of functionalised TiO2 NPs can effectively improve the electro-optical properties of the composite system. This new system provides a new idea for solving the compatibility problem of inorganic particles and organic matter.
Light-responsive actuation materials based on azo-containing liquid-crystalline polymers

Abstract:Crosslinked liquid-crystalline polymer film (CLCP) was prepared by thermal polymerization of the mixture of an acrylate monomer and diacrylate crosslinker containing azotolane chromophores. Mesomorphic properties were studied using a polarizing optical microscope and a polarized UV-Vis absorption spectrometer. Due to a longer conjugated structure of the azotolane moieties in side chains, the CLCP film underwent photoinduced bending upon exposure to short-wavelength visible light at 436 nm and the deformable film returned to its initial flat state completely by alternating visible light to 577 nm. It was also observed that the bending process was accelerated by increasing the light intensity and the temperature. And the maximum force generated in the film upon photoirradiation decreased with the increase of the temperature and increased with the increment of the light intensity. In addition, a visible-light-driven microrobot was prepared from CLCP and polyethylene bilayer films, which could successfully lift and move an object through its "head".

Abstract:The combination of nanomaterials and ordered deformable soft materials is emerging as an enabling system in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this context, nanomaterial functionalized photoresponsive liquid crystalline polymers are very promising and versatile systems due to their dynamic function. Moreover, the unique characteristic of nanomaterials combined with the mechanical, self-organizing and stimuli-responsive properties of deformable liquid crystalline polymers opens up new and exciting possibilities. In this chapter, we present recent developments of photodeformable behaviors of liquid crystalline polymers functionalized with nanomaterials. The main emphasis revolves around how the physicochemical properties of different nanomaterials modulate the reversible photomechanical behaviors of liquid crystalline polymers and their potential application in devices such as optically controlled switches and soft actuators.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs)/polymer composites are promising candidates for the next-generation of large-area processible and flexible electro-optical (E-O) materials due to their combination of the fast-responsive characteristics of LCs and the excellent physical properties of polymer. However, the current LCs/polymer system, represented by the polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC), are suffering from limitations of their normally opaque optical states, because the porous polymer matrix in PDLCs are lack of orientation control over LCs. Herein we promote a new category of LCs/polymer composite film from a polymeric system containing dual-frequency liquid crystals, liquid-crystalline polymerizable monomers and isotropic polymerizable monomers. By creating a polymer-stabilized-liquid-crystal like polymer microstructure within a PDLC like porous matrix, the promoted composite film features programmable electro-optical performances, excellent flexibility and enhanced robustness. Most importantly, the normal optical states can be regulated from opaque to transparent through microstructure control, showing great potential E-O applications in practical uses.

Abstract:<p>Multiresponsive elastic poly(methyl methacrylate‐butyl acrylate) (P(MMA‐BA)) copolymer nanoparticles with controlled sizes are fabricated through a one‐step method, which further serve as building blocks for the construction of multiresponsive films via self‐assembly. Taking advantage of the relatively low glass transition temperature and the core–shell structure of the copolymer nanoparticles, they possess the capacity to partially deform and fuse at room temperature under dry status, eventually resulting in the enhancement of the mechanical properties as well as the control of optical properties in the assembled ordered structures. The generated elastic films not only can control the concealment or exhibition of the designed color information, but also can rapidly respond to external stimuli such as the solvent, pH, and tensile force in a reversible fashion. These functional elastic copolymer nanoparticles have potential applications in dynamic color display, optical sensing, and anticounterfeiting.</p>

Light-responsive Actuation Materials Based on the Photodeformable Liquid Crystal Polymers

Abstract:Two acrylate monomers and two diacrylate crosslinkers containing a long spacer were synthesized and crosslinked liquid-crystalline polymer (CLCP) films with different concentrations of azobenzene were prepared by photopolymerization of the mixtures of the monomers and the crosslinkers. All the monomers, crosslinkers and polymerizable mixtures exhibited LC phases in heating or/and cooling processes. Due to the relatively long spacer, the obtained CLCP films exhibited a glass transition around 30 °C, which allows the CLCP films to undergo photodeformations at room temperature.
