Abstract:We extend the recent study of K1/K* enhancement as a signature of chiral symmetry restoration in heavy ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider via the kinetic approach to include the effects due to nonunity hadron fugacities during the evolution of produced hadronic matter and the temperature-dependent K1 mass. Although including nonunity pion and kaon fugacities reduces slightly the K1/K* enhancement found in previous study due to chiral symmetry restoration, adding temperature-dependent K1 mass leads to a substantial further reduction of the K1/K* enhancement. However, the final K1/K* ratio still shows a factor of 2.4 and 1.3 enhancement, respectively, in peripheral and midcentral collisions compared to the case without chiral symmetry restoration, confirming its use as a good signature for chiral symmetry restoration in the hot dense matter produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.044911 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Modern theories of physics tell that the vacuum is not an empty space. Hidden in the vacuum is a structure of anti-quarks $\bar{q}$ and quarks $q$. The $\bar{q}$ and $q$ pair has the same quantum number as the vacuum and condensates in it since the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is too strong to leave it empty. The $\bar{q}q$ condensation breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value $<\bar{q}q>$ is an order parameter. For higher temperature or higher matter-density, $|<\bar{q}q>|$ decreases reflecting the restoration of the symmetry. In contrast to these clear-cut arguments, experimental evidence is so far limited. First of all, the $\bar{q}q$ is nothing but the vacuum itself. It is neither visible nor perceptible. In this article, we unravel this invisible existence by high precision measurement of pionic atoms, $\pi^-$-meson-nucleus bound systems. Using the $\pi^-$ as a probe, we demonstrate that $|<\bar{q}q>|$ is reduced in the nucleus at 58% of the normal nuclear density by a factor of 77 $\pm$ 2% compared with that in the vacuum. This reduction indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus. The present experimental result clearly exhibits the existence of the hidden structure, the chiral condensate, in the vacuum.

Abstract:Based on the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) is believed to approximate confinement scale QCD. Dedicated and increasingly accurate experiments and improving lattice calculations are confirming this belief, and we are entering a new era in which we can test confinement scale QCD in some well chosen reactions. This is demonstrated with an overview of low energy experimental tests of ChPT predictions of $\pi\pi$ scattering, pion properties, $\pi$N scattering and electromagnetic pion production. These predictions have been shown to be consistent with QCD in the meson sector by increasingly accurate lattice calculations. At present there is good agreement between experiment and ChPT calculations, including the $\pi\pi$ and $\pi$N s wave scattering lengths and the $\pi^{0}$ lifetime. Recent, accurate pionic atom data are in agreement with chiral calculations once isospin breaking effects due to the mass difference of the up and down quarks are taken into account, as was required to extract the $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths. In addition to tests of the theory, comparisons between $\pi\pi$ and $\pi$N interactions based on general chiral principles are discussed. Lattice calculations are now providing results for the fundamental, long and inconclusively studied, $\pi$N $\sigma$ term and the contribution of the strange quark to the mass of the proton. Increasingly accurate experiments in electromagnetic pion production experiments from the proton which test ChPT calculations (and their energy region of validity) are presented. These experiments are also beginning to measure the final state $\pi$N interaction. This paper is based on the concluding remarks made at the Chiral Dynamics Workshop CD12 held at Jefferson Lab in Aug. 2012.

Abstract:The pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is exploited to compute vector and axial-vector pion matrix elements in a uniform magnetic field. Our results are model independent, and thereby constitute low-energy theorems that must be obeyed by QCD in external magnetic fields. Chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD results are compared, for which there is some tension. As an application, the matrix elements are utilized to compute pion decay rates in a magnetic field.

Abstract:We calculate the pion scattering amplitude at nonzero temperature and nonzero μ5 , the chemical potential associated to chiral imbalance in a locally P -breaking scenario. The amplitude is calculated up to next-to-leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory and is unitarized with the Inverse Amplitude Method to generate the poles of the f0(500) and ρ(770) resonances. Within the saturation approach, the thermal f0(500) pole allows to determine Tc(μ5) , the transition temperature for chiral symmetry restoration. Our results confirm the growing behavior of Tc(μ5) found in previous works and, through a fit to lattice results, we improve the uncertainty range of the low-energy constants associated to μ5 corrections in the chiral Lagrangian. Abstract:We study chiral symmetry restoration by analyzing thermal properties of QCD's (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons, especially the pion. The meson properties are obtained from the spectral densities of mesonic imaginary-time correlation functions. To obtain the correlation functions, we solve the Dyson-Schwinger equations and the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equations in the leading symmetry-preserving rainbow-ladder approximation. In the chiral limit, the pion and its partner sigma degenerate at the critical temperature $T_c$. At $T \gtrsim T_c$, it is found that the pion rapidly dissociates, which signals deconfinement phase transition. Beyond the chiral limit, the pion dissociation temperature can be used to define the pseudo-critical temperature of chiral phase crossover, which is consistent with that obtained by the maximum point of the chiral susceptibility. The parallel analysis for kaon and pseudoscalar $s\bar{s}$ suggests that heavy mesons may survive above $T_c$.

Abstract:Pion valence, glue, and sea distributions are calculated using a continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem. Since the framework is symmetry preserving, physical features of the distributions are properly expressed. The analysis reveals that the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking causes a hardening of the valence-quark distribution function, q(pi)(x). Nevertheless, this distribution exhibits the x similar or equal to 1 behavior predicted by quantum chromodynamics (QCD). At the scale zeta(2) := 2 GeV, the following momentum fractions are predicted: < x(valence)> = 0.48(3), < x(glue)> = 0.41(2), < x(sca)> = 0.11(2). Evolving to zeta = 5.2 GeV, the result for q(pi)(x) agrees with that computed using lattice QCD. These outcomes should both spur improved analyses of existing experiments and stimulate efforts to obtain new data on the pion distribution functions using available and envisioned facilities.

Abstract:Within the framework of the quantum molecular dynamics transport model, the pion production and constraint of the high-density symmetry energy in heavy-ion collisions near threshold energy have been thoroughly investigated. The energy conservation in the decay of resonances and reabsorption of pions as well as in the inelastic nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-resonance collisions are taken into account. The isospin diffusion in the low-density region (0.2$\rho_{0}$ - 0.8$\rho_{0}$) and high-density region (1.2$\rho_{0}$ - 1.8$\rho_{0}$) is investigated by analyzing the spectra of neutron/proton and $\pi^{-}/\pi^{+}$ ratios in the isotopic reactions of $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn and $^{108}$Sn + $^{112}$Sn at the incident energy of 270 MeV/nucleon, in which the symmetry energy manifests the opposite effect in the different density domain. The controversial conclusion of the $\pi^{-}/\pi^{+}$ ratio for constraining the high-density symmetry energy by different transport models with the FOPI data has been clarified. A soft symmetry energy with the slope parameter of $L(\rho_{0}) = 42\pm 25$ MeV by using the standard error analysis within the range of $1\sigma$ is obtained by analyzing the experimental data from the S$\pi$RIT collaboration. The neutron stars with the maximal mass of 2 $M_{\odot}$ and radius of 11-13 km are obtained with the constrained symmetry energy.

Pion Condensation and Pion Star from Holographic QCD

Abstract:The properties of QCD matter at finite isospin densities are investigated employing holographic hard-wall and soft-wall AdS/QCD models. It is confirmed that at high enough isospin densities, charged pions start to condense and the pion superfluid phase appears in the system. It is shown that the chiral condensate and the pion condensate can be transformed to each other and form a `chiral circle' in the superfluid phase. We derived the Equation of State (EoS) for pionic matter, calculated the normalized trace anomaly $\Delta$ and $(\epsilon-3p)/m_\pi^4$, and analyzed the sound speed and adiabatic index. Additionally, we provided data on the mass-radius relation and tidal deformability of pion stars. The results indicate that the holographic models align well with lattice QCD concerning isospin density, axial-vector condensation, EoS, and trace anomaly, though discrepancies in sound speed and adiabatic index emerge at higher isospin chemical potentials. The holographic models closely match those from chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT), suggesting that they can be considered as five-dimensional description of $\chi$PT.

Abstract:The pion production mechanism is explored based on the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model (UrQMD) in which the Δ -mass dependence of the M matrix and Δ -mass dependence of the momentum pNΔ in NΔ→NN cross sections are taken into account. By analyzing the time evolution of the pion production rate and the density in the overlapped region for the reaction of Au+Au at the beam energy of 0.4A GeV, we find that characteristic density of pion observable is in the region of 1–2 times normal density. The process of pion production in the reaction is tracked, including the loops of NN↔NΔ and Δ↔Nπ , and our calculations show that the sensitivity of π−/π+ to symmetry energy is weakened after 4–5 N−Δ−π loops in the pion production path. The π−/π+ ratio in the reaction near the threshold energies retains its sensitivity to the symmetry energy, and it is insensitive to the nuclear incompressibility K0 and effective mass when their values are selected in the commonly accepted range. By comparing the UrQMD calculations to the FOPI data at 0.4A GeV and considering the constraint of symmetry energy from neutron star properties, the slope of symmetry energy L=54–91 MeV and the symmetry energy at two times normal density S(2ρ0)=48–59 MeV are deduced, and they are also consistent with the constraint from the ASY-EOS flow data. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.103.014616 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:We investigate the effect of chiral phase transition on the pentaquark Θ+ mass and width at one-loop level of NΘ+K coupling at finite temperature and density. The behavior of the mass, especially the width in hadronic medium is dominated by the characteristics of chiral symmetry restoration at high temperature and high density. The mass and width shifts of positive-parity Θ+ are much larger than that of negative-parity one, which may be helpful to determine the parity of Θ+ in high energy nuclear collisions.

Modified dilepton production rate from charged pion-pair annihilation in the inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase

Abstract:We investigate the dilepton production rates from annihilation processes of charged pion pairs with modified pion dispersion relations in the inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase. We assume a dual chiral density wave as an inhomogeneous chiral condensate, and obtain the dispersion relations of the Nambu-Goldstone modes in the inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase. We use a low energy effective Lagrangian based on the O(4) symmetry which is expanded by the order parameter up to the sixth order. The obtained dispersion relations are anisotropic and quadratic for the momentum. We evaluate the electron-positron production rates by charged pion-pair annihilations as functions of an invariant mass using the obtained dispersion relations. Basically, the production rate in the inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase has a steeper overall slope with respect to an invariant mass than that in the homogeneous chiral condensed phase. Therefore, the production rate may be enhanced when the invariant mass is around twice the pion mass.

The mass of charged pions in neutron star matter

Abstract:We examine the behavior of charged pions in neutron-rich matter using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. This study is motivated by the prospect that pions, or pion-like excitations, may be relevant in neutron-rich matter encountered in core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. We find, as previously expected, that the $\pi^-$ mass increases with density and precludes s-wave condensation at $n_B\lesssim n_{\text{sat}}$, where $n_{\text{sat}} \simeq 0.16 \text{fm}^{-3}$ is the nuclear saturation density, and the mass of the $\pi^+$ mode decreases with density. The uncertainty in these predictions increases rapidly for $n_B \gtrsim n_{\text{sat}} $ because low energy constants associated with the two-pion-two-nucleon operators in chiral perturbation theory are poorly constrained. We find that these uncertainties are especially large in symmetric nuclear matter and should be included in the analysis of pion-nucleus interactions at low energy and pionic atoms. In neutron-rich matter, accounting for the self-energy difference between neutrons and protons related to the nuclear symmetry energy has several effects. It alters the power counting of certain higher-order contributions to the pion self-energy. Previously unimportant but attractive diagrams are enhanced and result in a modest reduction of the pion masses. Furthermore, in the low-wavelength limit, a collective mode with the quantum numbers of the $\pi^+$ appears.

Domain wall fermions with improved gauge actions

Abstract:We study the chiral properties of quenched domain wall fermions with several gauge actions. We demonstrate that the residual chiral symmetry breaking, which is present for a finite number of lattice sites in the fifth dimension ($L_s$), can be substantially suppressed using improved gauge actions. In particular the Symanzik action, the Iwasaki action, and a renormalization group improved gauge action, called doubly blocked Wilson (DBW2), are studied and compared to the Wilson action. All improved gauge actions studied show a reduction in the additive residual quark mass, $\mres$. Remarkably, in the DBW2 case $\mres$ is roughly two orders of magnitude smaller than the Wilson gauge action at $a^{-1}=2$ GeV and $L_s=16$. Significant reduction in $\mres$ is also realized at stronger gauge coupling corresponding to $a^{-1}=1.3$ GeV. As our numerical investigation indicates, this reduction is achieved by reducing the number of topological lattice dislocations present in the gauge field configurations. We also present detailed results for the quenched light hadron spectrum and the pion decay constant using the DBW2 gauge action.
