Abstract:We present a flexible electronic material fabricated by incorporating multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into poly(dimethylsiloxane) rubber (0.35 wt % MWNT loading is most appropriate in our study). Resistance-temperature data for different composites (0.35-5 wt %) are analyzed within Coulomb gap variable range hopping model, which well explains the semiconductor behaviors in low MWNT loading composites. Field effect transistors fabricated using 0.35 wt % composite show a p-type behavior with a high effective mobility of 1.98 cm(2) V s and linear transconductance 8.34x10(-8) S at 2.5 V drain voltage. These results suggest an optional way of seeking for high-quality flexible electronic materials.

Abstract:Experiments are conducted to test the permittivity of dielectric elastomer composites adulterated with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). The results show that the permittivity of dielectric elastomer composites can be significantly improved by adding MWCNT conductive particles. A thermodynamic model is presented to investigate the stability of MWCNT particle-doped dielectric elastomer composites. The theoretical investigation proves that the polarization of MWCNT, the electrostriction deformation and material constants of the elastomer significantly affect the stability of the thermodynamic system. The numerical analysis shows that comparing to ideal dielectric elastomer, the stability of dielectric elastomer composites filled with MWCNT coupling between electrostriction and polarization can be significantly enhanced.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors are the main elements for the development of flexible electronics due to their excellent flexibility and large-area manufacturing at low cost. Here, the effect of deformation on the electrical properties of a highly flexible organic semiconductor composed of poly(dimethylsiloxane) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes is investigated. The results reveal that their resistances increase with increasing deformation quantities, and in contrast to the outcomes of the compressed samples, the resistances of the higher multiwalled carbon nanotube loading composites show greater changes than those of the lower ones under certain bending angles or stretching ratios. Moreover, the property of the 0.35 wt% (the percolation threshold of the composite) sample is highly stable even when the sample is subjected to extreme bending or stretching deformations. Two different transition mechanisms are proposed to explain these phenomena, and quantitative analyses of the Schottky barrier heights in copper/composite junctions in each case are used to support the proposition. Inspired by the pressure-induced sensitivity of the low-loading composite, a P-P heterojunction diode using 0.35 wt% composite with asymmetric pressured sides is fabricated and measured. This work may have profound guiding significance for composite applications in flexible electronics.

Abstract:We present a study on the interaction between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and the soluble polymer poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT). Composites of SWNTs embedded in the polymer matrix were fabricated by drop casting of the nanotube/P3OT mixture dissolved in chloroform and have been studied using absorption spectroscopy, electrical characterization methods and high-resolution electron microscopy. The electrical conductivity was measured as a function of the SWNTs content in the solution. As the nanotube concentration increases from 0 to 20wt.%, the conductivity of the resulting films increases by five orders of magnitude. The enhancement in conductivity can be explained by means of simple percolation path theory, resulting in an estimated percolation threshold of 11wt.%.
Influence of Asymmetric Contact Form on Contact Resistance and Schottky Barrier, and Corresponding Applications of Diode

Abstract:We have fabricated carbon nanotube and MoS2 field-effect transistors with asymmetric contact forms of source-drain electrodes, from which we found the current directionality of the devices and different contact resistances under the two current directions. By designing various structures, we can conclude that the asymmetric electrical performance was caused by the difference in the effective Schottky barrier height (ΦSB) caused by the different contact forms. A detailed temperature-dependent study was used to extract and compare the ΦSB for both contact forms of CNT and MoS2 devices; we found that the ΦSB for the metal-on-semiconductor form was much lower than that of the semiconductor-on-metal form and is suitable for all p-type, n-type, or ambipolar semiconductors. This conclusion is meaningful with respect to the design and application of nanomaterial electronic devices. Additionally, using the difference in barrier height caused by the contact forms, we have also proposed and fabricated Schottky barrier diodes with a current ratio up to 104; rectifying circuits consisting of these diodes were able to work in a wide frequency range. This design avoided the use of complex chemical doping or heterojunction methods to achieve fundamental diodes that are relatively simple and use only a single material; these may be suitable for future application in nanoelectronic radio frequency or integrated circuits.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) filled polymer nanocomposites are increasingly regarded as a realistic alternative to conventional smart materials. In this paper, we studied the contact and bulk piezoresistive properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube/styrene butadiene styrene (MWNT/SBS) composite. Measurements of resistance change under pressure utilizing an Au plate PCB electrode and a sputtered Au layer electrode for same samples were implemented to examine bulk piezoresistivity of the composites and the influence of contact resistance. The results showed that the contact resistance responses to stress for separated electrodes are more remarkable than bulk resistance responses in the MWNT/SBS composite films, but not so stable.

Abstract:In this study, a simple and cost effective fabrication method is presented to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Chloroform is used to disperse SWCNTs and dissolve PDMS. Ultrasonication was applied to evaporate chloroform to minimize agglomerates during conventional evaporate process that involves solvent evaporation with heat. Experiment results show that the long term mild ultrasonication process does not affect the electrical properties of PDMS nanocomposites. Furthermore, the percolation behaviour of SWCNTs/PDMS composite was found to be at 0.5 weight percentage (wt.%) loading of SWCNTs and a fairly linear resistance was observed when different bias voltages were applied.

Abstract:Combining the electronic structures of two-dimensional monolayers in ultrathin hybrid nanocomposites is expected to display new properties beyond their simplex components. Here, first-principles calculations are performed to study the structural, electronic and optical properties of hybrid graphene and phosphorene nanocomposite. It turns out that weak van der Waals interactions dominate between graphene and phosphorene with their intrinsic electronic properties preserved. Hybrid graphene and phosphorene nanocomposite shows tunable band gaps at graphene's Dirac point and a transition from hole doing to electron doing for graphene as the interfacial distance decreases. Charge transfer between graphene to phosphorene induces interfacial electron-hole pairs in hybrid graphene and phosphorene nanocomposite with enhanced visible light response.

Abstract:We investigate both end-contact and side-contact structures between At, Pd, Sc and carbon nanotube (CNT) in this paper. The different structures show the different chemical bonds and charge transfer at the metal-CNT contact interfaces. A novel method based on dipole effect is proposed to calculate the Schottky barrier height (SBH). Different SBHs for the contacts are due to different electro-negativity of metal atoms as well as the chemical bonds.

Abstract:This work focuses on the combination of the complementary physical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT)/polystyrene (PS) polymer blend. The characterization of MWCNTs/P3OT/PS hybrid system performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV)–visible absorption, and electrical measurements show interesting effects. Optical results demonstrate that the addition of MWCNT to P3OT/PS matrix blend will enhance the UV–visible absorption and insignificantly affect the optical energy gap of P3OT/PS matrix; this can be explained in terms of a reduced photo-induced charge transfer in such composite system. This study shows that incorporation of 5 wt% functionalized MWCNTs onto P3OT/PS polymer blend will convert this material from insulator to conductor and at this level of MWCNTs content, MWCNTs will form a network inside blend matrix with low capacitor element and high resistor element effects.

Tuning Surface States of Metal/Polymer Contacts Toward Highly Insulating Polymer-Based Dielectrics

Abstract:Metal–polymer interface plays a crucial role in controlling the dielectric performance in all flexible electronics. Ideally, the formation of the Schottky barrier due to the large band offset of the electron affinity of the polymer over the work function of the electrode should sufficiently impede the charge injection. Arguably, however, such an injection barrier has hardly been indisputably verified in polymer–metal junctions due to the ever-existing surface states, which dramatically compromise the barrier thus leading to undesired high electrical conduction. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a clear negative correlation between the breakdown strength and the density of surface states in polymer dielectrics. The existence of surface states reduces the effective barrier height for charge injection, as further revealed by density functional theory calculations and photoinjection current measurements. Based on these findings, we present a surface engineering method to enhance the breakdown strength with the application of nanocoatings on polymer films to eliminate surface states. The density of surface states is reduced by 2 orders of magnitude when the polymer is coated with a layer of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets, leading to about 100% enhancement of breakdown strength. Composite films of oxidized multiwall carbon nanotube and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as a contact electrode for transistor and inverter devices

Abstract:Composite films of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polymerized with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were prepared by spin-coating a mixture solution. The effect of the MWNT loading and the MWNT oxidation, with acid solution or ultraviolet (UV)-ozone treatment, on the film properties such as surface roughness, work function, surface energy, optical transparency and conductivity were studied. Also pentacene thin film transistors and inverters were made with these composite films as a contact metal and the device characteristics were measured. The oxidation of MWNT reduced the conductivity of MWNT/PEDOT:PSS composite film but increased the work function and transparency. UV-ozone treated MWNT/PEDOT:PSS composite film showed higher conductivity (14000 Ω/□) and work function (4.9 eV) than acid-oxidized MWNT/PEDOT:PSS composite film and showed better performance as a source/drain electrode in organic thin film transistor (OTFT) than other types of MWNT/PEDOT:PSS composite films. Hole injection barrier of the UV-ozone treated MWNT/PEDOT:PSS composite film with pentacene was significantly lower than any other films because of the higher work function.
Tunable Electrical and Mechanical Responses of PDMS and Polypyrrole Nanowire Composites

Abstract:A generic experimental procedure is presented in this work to enhance the electrical responses of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) through incorporation of conducting polymer nanowires, while maintaining the desirable mechanical flexibility of PDMS. The conducting polypyrrole (PPy) nanowires are synthesized using a template method. The dielectric constants of the composites are characterized by impedance measurements, and the effect of nanowire concentration is investigated by the percolation theory. Using a continuous hyperbolic tangent function, critical volume fraction is estimated to be 9.6 vol%, at which an 85-fold enhancement in the dielectric constants is achieved. The viscoelastic properties of the composites are characterized by the stress relaxation nanoindentation tests, and the effect of nanowire concentration on the elastic modulus of composites is found to deviate significantly from the Wang-Pyrz model at the critical volume fraction. The tunable multifunctionality of PDMS composites that possess significantly enhanced electrical and moderate viscoelastic responses is desirable for many sensing and actuation applications.

Abstract:Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been covalently modified with poly[(2-methoxy,5-octoxy)1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MO-PPV) by in situ polymerization reaction to form a series of nanocomposites with well-controlled interfaces. The method provided a mean to disperse nanotubes uniformly and maximize the interfacial area at the same time. Absorption spectrum and electron microscopy imaging of the composite structure have been influenced by doped a small amount of functionalized SWNTs. Moreover, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra quenched markedly by the introduction of internal polymer/nanotube junctions within the polymer matrix. Photovoltaic devices based on MO-PPV/SWNTs bulk heterojunctions showed much better in performance. The data suggested that such improvement was attributed to the bulk molecular heterojunctions intrinsic nanophase separation that resulted more efficient excitons separation, transportation and collection.
Mechanical and electrical properties of shape memory polymer matrix and carbon nanocomposite

Abstract:This paper presents the fabrication and characterization, especially mechanical and electrically conductive properties, of a shape memory styrene polymer mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The composite, which is produced from resin mixing with MWNTs, can be activated directly by passing an electrical current. It is found that MWNTs can incorporate very well with resin after being disposed by nitrohydrochloric acid at even higher than 100°C. The MWNTs must be dispersed using an ultrasonic apparatus for more than 0.5 hour in the solvent, which is able to dissolve the resin. The transition temperature of the composite filled with 8% MWNTs measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is 49.57°C lower than 53°C of the pure polymer, while the curing temperature is 80°C higher than the 75°C of the pure polymer. The electrical behavior of composite related to conductive networks, and the percolation threshold of MWNTs/SMP nanocomposites sheet were about 5 wt.%; the electrical conductivity of composite filled with 8wt.% MWNTs ranges from 10 -2∼10 -1Ωcm -1.

Abstract:We have manufactured a highly conductive and stretchable composite by backfilling a preformed graphene/MWCNT aerogel with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The electrical conductivity of our product can reach 2.8 S cm(-1) with only 1.3 wt% graphene/MWCNT loading, and remains constant after 100 times repeated stretching by 20% and 5000 times bending.

Abstract:The mutilayer PDMS / MWCNT composites can reach great EMI SE. This work showcases the production of flexible polydimethylsiloxane/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PDMS/MWCNT) composites with multilayer structures via the glucose template method followed by vacuum‐assisted filtration and hot pressing. The properties of the single‐layer and multilayer composites have been systematically investigated. In the X‐band, thanks to the ohmic loss, the interfacial polarization loss at the interfaces and the multiple reflections between PDMS/MWCNT layers, the 5‐layer PDMS/MWCNT composites achieves 65.9 dB. Furthermore, all multilayer PDMS/MWCNT composites present a high retention rate of about of 90% after repeated bending with curvature radius of 1.8 mm at a frequency of 1 cycle per 2 s for 1000 times. Highlights The PDMS/MWCNT composites are fabricated by the glucose template method. The 5‐layer PDMS/MWCNT composites can reach 65.9 dB in X‐band. The PDMS/MWCNT composites present high stability even after repeated bending.

Abstract:Poly (2-methoxy-5-octoxy-1, 4-phenylenevinylene) (MO-PPV) and functionalized multi-walled carbon tube (MO-PPV/MWNTs) composites with different MWNTs concentration were synthesized by in situ polymerization. The composites were characterized by AFM, PL spectra and UV-vis absorption spectra. The AFM phase image shows a good dispersion of MWNTs in the polymer matrix. PL and UV-vis spectra exhibited a blue shift of the main band.
Schottky-Barrier-Dependent Electrical Characteristics in Conjugated Polymer Transistors with Various Contact Metals

Abstract:Despite the intensive study on the promotion of device performance, the device physics regarding the effects of Schottky barrier on the charge injection in conjugated polymer transistors still need more discussions. Here, the indacenodithiophene–co-benzothiadiazole (IDT-BT) organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with four different contact metals (Pt, Au, Cu, and Cr) were fabricated to explore the effects. Different Schottky barriers were achieved with the contact electrode’s work function (WF) varying. The ION/IOFF ratio of IDT-BT OFETs increases from 103 to 106 as the WF increases from 4.6 to 5.65 eV. The hole mobility also increases from 0.01 (for Cr) to 2.79 cm2V–1s–1 (for Pt) when the WF approaches the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of the conjugated polymer. Moreover, the threshold voltage and subthreshold swing of the devices both decrease with increasing the WF. These could be ascribed to the lowered Schottky barrier with WF, which promotes charge injection. The lowest Schottky barrier (0.123 eV) and contact resistance (1.06 × 104 Ω⋅cm) can be achieved in the devices with Pt contacts, owing to the highest work function.
