Abstract:Many efficient methods have been proposed to realize lignin depolymerization, while effective usage of lignin depolymerization products at mild conditions is still a big challenge. Conversion of them to stable products in thermal and chemical properties is a necessary step. Herein, a mild hydrogenation process of lignin depolymerization products over Ni/SiO2 catalyst was proposed. Model compound of 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran exhibited a good reaction result. Nearly 100% conversion was obtained at 130 °C, and the selectivity of 2-ethylcyclohexanol product reached 94.6%. The lignin depolymerization products also had a good hydrogenation result, in which not only the hydrogenation of unsaturated groups but also the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds occurred. Stable products in thermal and chemical properties were formed, which possessed high heated value and low molecular weight. This treatment is conducive to suppressing the occurrence of condensation and favorable for the further catalytic conversion.

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:A series of Ni-based catalysts, including Ni/SiO2-ZrO2, Ni/HZSM-5, Ni/Al2O3, Ni/SiO2, Ni/AC and Ni/CMK-3, were prepared to produce H-2 from the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of methanol. This H-2 was then used in the in situ hydrogenation of phenolic compounds for bio-fuel. The effect of different promoters was investigated with the addition of Co, La, Fe and Cu to the Ni/CMK-3 catalyst coupled with analysis using BET, XRD and SEM. The results showed that Ni/SiO2, Ni/AC and Ni/CMK-3 yielded the most hydrogen and they were chosen for further investigation in the in situ hydrogenation of phenol, guaiacol and lignin depolymerization products (LDP). Using these Ni-based catalysts, the APR of methanol provided hydrogen for the hydrogenation of the phenolic compounds. Of the modified Ni/CMK-3 catalysts, La-Ni/CMK-3 exhibited the highest activity for the conversion of phenol (80.88%) with a satisfactory cyclohexanol yield (76.64%) at 240 degrees C for 4 h without an external H-2 source. When using La-Ni/CMK-3, the content of the phenolic compounds in LDP decreased from 75.25% to 25.38% while the content of saturated alcohols increased from 1.34% to 31.19%. It has been shown that it is possible to use the APR of methanol for the hydrogenation of LDP over a series of Ni/CMK-3 catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis via targeted depolymerization of C–O linkages is a techno-economic beneficial process for converting lignin into highly valuable chemicals and clean fuels. In this work, a macroporous silicalite-1 (S-1) array-supported Ru-Ni metallic phosphide composite (Ru-Ni12P5/S-15) was prepared as a catalyst and hydrogenolysis activity under relative mild conditions was investigated using a series of compounds containing ether linkages as lignin-related model compounds. The Lewis acid sites originating from the unreduced Ru species and the macroporous geometry of S-1 significantly influenced hydrogenolysis activity and product selectivity. Analysis of the mechanism demonstrated that both the aryl ether and aliphatic ether linkages were directly hydrogenated over Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. 2D-HSQC-NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the ether linkages of lignin were efficiently cleaved by Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. Furthermore, the obtained liquid hydrogenolysis products are high value-added chemicals used for pharmaceutical production and can be facilely tuned via the reaction conditions.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenol to KA oil (the mixture of cyclohexanone (K) and cyclohexanol (A)) is attractive yet challenging in the sustainable upgrading of biomass derivatives under mild conditions. Traditional supported metal catalysts have been widely studied but the active components on supports often exhibit low recyclability due to their instability under experimental conditions. Here we show fabricating ultrasmall Pt/NiO in the pores of chromium terephthalate MIL-101 as catalysts for hydrogenation of phenol. Impressively, Pt/NiO@MIL-101 achieves catalytic phenol hydrogenation to KA oils of tunable K/A ratios and good reusability under room temperature and atmospheric hydrogen pressure, superior to contrast Pt@MIL-101 and Pt/NiO samples. Such excellent performance mainly originates from the effective adsorption and activation of phenol by coordinatively unsaturated Cr sites and H 2 activation on ultrasmall Pt/NiO as well as its effective spillover to the adsorbed phenol over Cr sites for hydrogenation reaction. Substantially, such catalyst also displays the excellent performances for hydrogenation of phenol's derivatives under mild conditions.

Abstract:Valorization of lignin to value-added chemicals is attractive and exploiting highly active catalyst is vital. In our recent work, a highly dispersed and active NiRu/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared based on layered double hydroxide. Herein, the effect of reaction conditions on NiRu/Al2O3 catalytic hydrogenolysis of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) with isopropanol and the composition of the resulting soluble portion (SP) were well examined. The results show that high dispersion and strong interaction between Ni and Ru benefit hydrogenolysis of EHL for producing phenols. The maximum SP yield was obtained at 220 °C for 4 h. Meanwhile, SP acquired at the optimum conditions exhibits the lowest molecular masses and highest monomers/dimers content. Comparing with SPnon, the yield of monomeric phenols in SPcat increased to double (38.1 %). The phenols in SPs were further analyzed with a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. More lowly condensed phenols with less oxygen atoms were detected in SPcat than in SPnon. The results suggest that hydrogenolysis and deoxygenation were significantly promoted with NiRu/Al2O3, which was also verified by 2D HSQC NMR analysis.

Abstract:Mild prehydrogenation of phenolics in bio-oil is known to effectively alleviate the severe coking that occurs on the surface of the cracking catalysts. This study investigated the hydrogenation of phenolic monomers (i.e., phenol, catechol, and guaiacol) over Pt-Ni/SiO2 at different Ni/Pt ratios. The results show that the hydrogenation of aromatic rings preferentially occurred over the Pt-Ni/SiO2 catalyst, with a slight hydrogenolysis of the C-aryl-OR bond. The prepared Pt-Ni/SiO2 catalysts not only offered a good dispersion of the Pt and Ni species on SiO2, but also promoted spontaneous dissociation of H-2 and facile diffusion of the resulting H atoms on Pt-Ni/SiO2, thereby contributing to its remarkable catalytic performance. The optimized 3Pt6Ni/SiO2 catalyst not only achieved a high phenolic conversion of 66%-99% and a high liquid product yield of 80%, but also significantly inhibited the side reaction of the products leading to gas formation. Furthermore, a stable phenolic conversion of similar to 80% within 24 h indicates the superior stability of 3Pt6Ni/SiO2. Subsequently, catalytic cracking of the hydrotreated bio-oil was investigated. The results indicate that mild hydrogenation benefits the formation and aromatization of light olefin intermediates, leading to increased formation of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The oil phase yield of the bio-oil fraction was 38.6%, comprising entirely hydrocarbons, of which 82.2% were monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Hence, this study provides a promising approach for converting the phenolics in bio-oil into highly hydrogenated products, which are ready for the subsequent catalytic cracking.

Abstract:NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydro pyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydro pyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H-2 and 400 degrees C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni1Mo/ZrO2. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of NixMo/ZrO2 depends on Ni-0, Mo4+, and Mo3+. The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni1Mo/ZrO2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.

Efficient Lignin Depolymerization Process for Phenolic Products with Lignin-Based Catalysts and Mixed Solvents

Abstract:Due to their diverse functional groups and structural composition, carbon-based catalysts exhibit superior performance in various catalytic reaction systems, such as hydrogenolysis, hydrogenation, and oxidation. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of lignin liquid-phase depolymerization by applying the designed lignin-based carbon catalysts to produce aromatic chemicals. A series of Ni-Mo bimetallic carbon-based catalysts were synthesized to explore the effect of different preparation methods on the catalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the embedded Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst with multi-active sites of Ni, MoO3, and Mo2C results in a prominent catalytic effect on lignin depolymerization. The Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst can achieve a lignin conversion of 87.62% with a 42.25% monophenol yield in the methanol and water system. With the synergistic contribution of multiple active sites of the catalyst and the mixed-solvent system (water, methanol, and 1, 4-dioxane), a remarkably high yield of 62.95% of mono-phenolic compound was achieved at 260 degrees C and 3 MPa N2 with a reaction time of 4 h. The selectivity of 2methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol in liquid products was 40.85 and 36.42%, respectively. Vanillin, a typical product from lignin depolymerization reported in the literature, was further degraded to monophenol in this system. The outcomes also confirmed that the in situ hydrogen production system of methanol and water coupled with 1,4-dioxane facilitated the lignin depolymerization significantly.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of lignin is one of the most effective methods for valorization of lignin to downstream aromatic compounds. However, the overhydrogenation of benzene rings during lignin hydrogenation could lower the selectivity of monomer aromatics. In this study, novel composite catalysts of Ni loaded on Zr-modified SiO2-Al2O3 support (Ni/SA-Zr) were prepared by simple wet impregnation methods for the reductive depolymerization of lignin. The as-prepared catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity to achieve 66.7% yield of lignin oil and 60.5% lignin monomer. Also, the phenolic selectivity was up to 80.1% under optimal conditions (catalyst 15Ni/SA-Zr, 260 degrees C, 2 MPa H-2, 4 h). The presence of ZrO2 not only improved the catalytic activity of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst but also inhibited the hydrogenation of the benzene ring. The characterization of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst showed that the introduction of ZrO2 was beneficial to the dispersion of metallic Ni on the surface of the catalyst. In addition, the interaction between the Ni metal and the support was weakened due to the presence of ZrO2, which was believed to be the main reason for the high activity of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst in the lignin depolymerization. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry analysis showed that electron-rich Ni species favored the adsorption of hydrogen. However, excess ZrO2 would reduce the activity of the catalyst. The two-dimensional C-13-H-1 heteronuclear single quantum correlation-nuclear magnetic resonance characterization of lignin samples before and after the depolymerization reaction confirmed that lignin was converted to monomeric phenols effectively. Based on the reaction path of the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, a possible reaction path of lignin depolymerization was proposed.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenolysis of lignin is an attractive strategy for valorizing lignin to fuels/value-added chemicals and developing novel and highly active heterogeneous catalysts is crucial. Herein, a highly dispersed Ni-Ru/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by a coprecipitation method using layered double hydroxide as precursor was reported. Various lignin model compounds were used to evaluate the catalyst activity. The results show that all the model compounds can be completely transformed into arenes and phenol below 150 °C using isopropanol as hydrogen source, and the latter was easily reduced to cyclohexanol. Kinetics study reveals that apparent activation energies increase in the order: benzyl phenyl ether (90.6 kJ/mol) < phenethoxybenzene (126.7 kJ/mol) < diphenyl ether (172.2 kJ/mol). 2D HSQC NMR analysis exhibits that most of C–O linkages in lignin were cleaved during hydrogenolysis over Ni-Ru/Al2O3. The results indicate that the bimetallic Ni-Ru catalyst has a high activity for catalyzing hydrogenolysis of lignin and model compounds. The catalyst was characterized with multiple tools. The results suggest that Ni and Ru nanoparticles in the catalyst are highly dispersed and a strong interaction exists between Ni and Ru, which should be responsible for promoting the hydrogenolysis of lignin and model compounds.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenolysis of 4-O-5 bond in lignin under relatively mild conditions is an important strategy for the production of valuable aromatic products, e.g. phenols, from renewable carbon resources. However, the easy saturation of benzene rings under reductive conditions over metal catalyst reduces the selectivity to aromatics. In this work, we investigated the effect of bromination of supported Ni nanoparticles on the phenol selectivity during the hydrogenolysis of diphenyl ether (DPE), a commonly used lignin model compound. Compared with the unmodified catalysts, Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst derived from Ni-Al layered double oxides exhibits enhanced phenol selectivity (37% vs. 15%) under similar DPE conversions (60%). Various characterizations including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and CO-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicate that Br preferentially located at the terrace site of Ni nanoparticles, deactivating the continuous Ni sites for benzene ring hydrogenation. In addition, the electron-withdrawing effect of Br creates positively charged Ni sites at the corners, facilitating the hydrogenolysis of C–O aryl ether bonds. During the hydrogenation of real lignin, the selective poisoning and electronic effects introduced by Br synergistically increased the yield of phenols from 12.20% on the initial Ni/Al 2 O 3 to 30.47% over the Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. This work provides an advanced strategy for the catalytic valorization of lignin by halogen modified metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic renewable polymer in nature. However, its very stable structure limits its widespread application. To achieve high-value utilization of lignin, this study used solid base oxides to depolymerize calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) for the synthesis of phenolic compounds. The catalyst precursors were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the corresponding mesoporous metal oxides NiO, MgCoOx, and NiMgCoOx were obtained after calcination. MgCoOx and NiMgCoOx had similar but stronger basicity compared to NiO. While all oxides promoted the depolymerization of CLS, NiMgCoOx was identified as the best catalyst, achieving a maximum liquid product yield of 74.3 wt.% and a selectivity of phenolic compounds of 74.52% in the liquid product. In addition, NiMgCoOx showed satisfactory structural and catalytic stability. The experimental results indicated that solid base oxides can capture the active hydrogen in CLS, causing the hydrolysis reaction of ether bonds, and the resulting products continuously depolymerize or polymerize; Co present in the catalyst promotes the adsorption of hydrogen by Ni, while NiO in NiMgCoOx facilitates the adsorption of both reactants and hydrogen. The combination of Ni and Co improves hydrogenation performance.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction is a necessary refinery process for lignin-derived phenolic compounds to be used as high quality liquid fuels. Catalyst morphology makes a big difference on the HDO performance through changing the properties of metal site and acid site, while the catalytic mechanism is still not very clear. In this work, four kinds of Ru/TiO2 catalysts with different morphology were prepared by photochemical method and all of them achieved a high Ru metal dispersion. A series of catalyst characterizations were carried out, including XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, H2-TPD and NH3-TPD, in order to explore the crystal structure, surface property, Ru metal dispersion, hydrogen adsorption capacity as well as acid properties. Results showed that Ru/TNP catalyst possessed a large surface area, an abundance of medium strength acid sites and a good hydrogen adsorption capacity. The HDO performances on lignin-derived phenolic compounds were also compared, in which Ru/TNP catalyst presented the best HDO performance. The guaiacol conversion and the selectivity of cyclohexane product were both close to 100 % at 250 °C under 1 MPa hydrogen pressure. Moreover, the content of hydrocarbons increased from 11.1 % to 60.8 % in the lignin-oil upgrading process.

Abstract:Efficient catalytic cleavage of C–O bonds in lignin derivatives is crucial for converting these compounds into valuable chemicals. The reliance on expensive noble metals and harsh operational conditions poses significant challenges for existing catalyst systems. In response, we have developed a Ni-based catalyst through an acetone-driven etching-deposition-pyrolysis technique, tailored to maximize exposure of Ni active sites. Systematic optimization of the support's surface properties, pyrolysis temperature, and Ni loading were instrumental in augmenting C–O bond cleavage efficiency in aromatic ethers. Remarkably, the catalyst, 2Ni/CNS-500, facilitated the cleavage of the C–O bond in diphenyl ether (DPE) to monomers under mild conditions (140 °C for 2 h under 1 MPa H 2 pressure), surpassing the performance of several existing heterogeneous Ni-based catalysts. The catalyst's superior performance is attributed to the robust interaction between nickel and carbon nanosphere (CNS) species and the significant exposure of nickel active sites. Versatility was demonstrated with a variety of lignin-derived substrates, including 4-phenoxy phenol (4-O-5), benzyl phenyl ether (α-O-4), phenyl ethyl benzene (β-O-4), and anisole, showcasing the catalyst's broad applicability. Therefore, the acetone-driven etching-deposition-pyrolysis strategy is considered a promising method for preparing highly dispersed nickel-based hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives catalysts with broad industrial application prospects.

Abstract:The bio-oils derived from fast pyrolysis of lignin contain large amount of phenolic components. Due to its high oxygen content, it cannot be used directly as traffic liquid fuels. Currently, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective method for upgrading bio-oil to produce high-quality liquid fuels. However, catalysts have a key role in the selective hydrogenolysis of oxygen-containing groups (e.g. -OCH3). In this study, the mixed supported nickel-based catalyst Ni@HZSM-5-γ-Al2O3 was successfully prepared by the impregnation method. The influence of the temperature, pressure, hydrogen flow rate and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on the HDO activity was investigated. Under the optimized conditions (350 °C, 15 bar, 350 mL/min H2, 1 h−1), the conversion of guaiacol reached 98.73%, and the product liquid yields and hydrocarbon contents were 39.82% and 86.85%, respectively. In particular, the contents of aromatics and alkanes were 49.60% and 37.25%, respectively. Based on catalyst evaluation and characterization, the mechanism of guaiacol HDO was explored. Demethylation, direct deoxygenation, hydrogenation, hydrolysis, transalkylation and condensation reactions were considered as the main pathways.

Abstract:Efficient hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds in lignin offers a promising pathway for producing high-value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing an easily synthesized, highly active catalyst for this process remains a challenge. In this paper, a series of Ni-M(Pd, Pt, Ru)/C catalysts were prepared and synergized with NaOH to produce aromatic compounds from β-O-4 model compound (MC). Among the catalyst systems, Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH completely converted β-O-4 MC at mild conditions (150 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , 3 h) to produce monomers with a yield of 95.6 wt% and excellent selectivity of the bond-breaking products as high as 85.5 %. Recycling tests showed that the Ni-0.25 % Pd/C catalyst remained stable after five cycles, with high activity and without the need for a further reduction before runs. Further, the catalytic system has proven to exhibit high activity for the cleavage of other types of lignin MC, such as 4-O-5, α-O-4, β-O-4 and ether bond (diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, Guaiacolylglycerol-β-guaiacol ether, benzyl ether) and also effective for lignin from enzymatic cleavage (LEC). Hydrogenolysis of LEC achieved a monomer yield of 34.5 wt%; the molecular weight (555 g/mol) of the hydrogenolysis oligomer was significantly reduced compared to LEC (2872 g/mol). The highly active and stable Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH catalytic system provides a promising pathway for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds to produce high-value biofuels and chemicals.

Abstract:Recently, the depolymerization of lignocellulosic biomass without exogenous hydrogen sources (named self-hydrogen supplied catalytic fractionation, SCF) was realized under mild conditions, with nearly theoretical yield of lignin phenolic monomers (lignin oil) achieved (Zhou et al., JACS Au, 2023, 3, 1911-1917). Herein, we further developed a new process for the demethoxylation of thus-prepared lignin oil to get 4-propylphenol in the absence of exogenous hydrogen over the RuNi/NiAl2O4 catalyst. In this process, a hint of hydrogen is generated by the splitting of water on the Ni surface, which drives the removal of methoxy groups in lignin oil and produces 4-alkylphenol and methanol, and then the following aqueous phase reforming of methanol supplies more hydrogen and accelerates the entire reaction. Interestingly, water splitting on the Ni surface forms a Ru-NiOx interface, which can improve the C-O bond activation ability and facilitate the removal of methoxy groups. In addition, Ru in Ru-NiOx species is more metallic, which is beneficial for the aqueous phase methanol reforming. Under optimized conditions, 17.0 wt % yield of 4-propylphenol could be acquired in real birch lignin oil. This strategy efficiently produces 4-propylphenol from lignin oil using structural hydrogen in both lignin oil and H2O. The result is a promising and effective approach for lignin oil upgrading.
