Abstract:When electrons pass through a cylindrical electrical conductor aligned in a magnetic field, their wave-like nature manifests itself as a periodic oscillation in the electrical resistance as a function of the enclosed magnetic flux1. This phenomenon reflects the dependence of the phase of the electron wave on the magnetic field, known as the Aharonov–Bohm effect2, which causes a phase difference, and hence interference, between partial waves encircling the conductor in opposite directions. Such oscillations have been observed in micrometre-sized thin-walled metallic cylinders3,4,5 and lithographically fabricated rings6,7,8. Carbon nanotubes9,10 are composed of individual graphene sheets rolled into seamless hollow cylinders with diameters ranging from 1 nm to about 20 nm. They are able to act as conducting molecular wires11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18, making them ideally suited for the investigation of quantum interference at the single-molecule level caused by the Aharonov–Bohm effect. Here we report magnetoresistance measurements on individual multi-walled nanotubes, which display pronounced resistance oscillations as a function of magnetic flux.We find that the oscillations are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for the Aharonov–Bohm effect in a hollow conductor with a diameter equal to that of the outermost shell of the nanotubes. In some nanotubes we also observe shorter-period oscillations, which might result from anisotropic electron currents caused by defects in the nanotube lattice.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

Abstract:In this study, the effect on the conductance of polymer nanocomposites considering quantum tunneling resistance is investigated with respect to the chirality of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and uncertainties in the geometric parameters of CNTs by using Monte Carlo simulations. The random spatial placement for CNTs was accomplished with a one-dimensional line segment and the periodic boundary conditions were applied to CNTs in the two-dimensional representative volume element. Intersection points between each CNT were calculated to obtain connectivity lists of the connected network path. Both the intrinsic resistance of the CNT and the inter-CNT tunneling resistance were considered in this model. In addition, the in-house code developed was validated by comparison with several experimental datasets from the literature. Unlike past studies, uncertainties in the chiral index of single-wall CNTs concerning armchair and zig-zag structures have been considered here and the electrical conductivity and percolation threshold are predicted.

Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.

Abstract:Magnetic flux piercing a carbon nanotube induce periodic gap oscillations which represent the Aharonov-Bohm effect at nanoscale. Here we point out, by analyzing numerically the anisotropic Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, that similar oscillations should be observable when uniaxial strain is applied to a nanotube. In both cases, a vector potential (magnetic- or strain-induced) may affect the measurable quantities at zero field. The analysis, carried out within the Gutzwiller Approximation, shows that for small semiconducting nanotube with zigzag edges and realistic value of the Hubbard repulsion ($U/t_0=1.6$, with $t_0\approx{}2.5\,$eV being the equilibrium hopping integral) energy gap can be reduced by a factor of more than $100$ due to the strain.

Abstract:The influence of a fullerene molecule trapped inside a single-wall carbon nanotube on resonant electron transport at low temperatures and strong polaronic coupling is theoretically discussed. Strong peak to peak fluctuations and anomalous temperature behavior of conductance amplitudes are predicted and investigated. The influence of the chiral properties of carbon nanotubes on transport is also studied.

Abstract:The quantum conductance of the electron interferometers composed of the armchair and metallic zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in an axial magnetic field lower than 100 T has been studied by using the tight-binding approximation and Landauer–Buttiker formula. Quantum conductance oscillation as a function of gate voltage due to Fabry–Perot like electron interference was found. The analytical expressions of the rapid and slow conductance oscillation periods for the armchair SWNTs have been derived. It is shown that they depend on the magnetic field, gate voltage, and tube length. For the case of the metallic zigzag SWNTs, except rapid conductance oscillation, slow conductance oscillation was also found, which should not exist without the axial magnetic field.

Abstract:The precise control and deep understanding of quantum interference in carbon nanotube (CNT) devices are particularly crucial not only for exploring quantum coherent phenomena in clean one-dimensional electronic systems, but also for developing carbon-based nanoelectronics or quantum devices. Here, we construct a double split-gate structure to explore the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference effect in individual single-wall CNT p - n junction devices. For the first time, we achieve the AB modulation of conductance with coaxial magnetic fields as low as 3 T, where the flux through the tube is much smaller than the flux quantum. We further demonstrate direct electric-field control of the nonmonotonic magnetoconductance through a gate-tunable built-in electric field, which can be quantitatively understood in combination with the AB phase effect and Landau-Zener tunneling in a CNT p - n junction. Moreover, the nonmonotonic magnetoconductance behavior can be strongly enhanced in the presence of Fabry-Pe ' rot resonances. Our Letter paves the way for exploring and manipulating quantum interference effects with combining magnetic and electric field controls.
Finite Size Effects in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The low-energy theory for finite long carbon nanotube is derived and numerically examined. It shows that the electronic structure is dominated by the quantum confining, which determines the profile of wave functions as well as the eigen energies; while the details of the wave functions are resolved by the structure of the nanotubes. This behavior is attributed to the peculiar electronic structure of the nanotubes. Because of the slow variation of the profile of electron wave functions, the measured conductance is NOT independent of the position to measure it, which is evident in the multiprobe experiment.
Efficient Control of High Harmonic Generation in Carbon Nanotubes using the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

Abstract:We show that high-harmonic generation (HHG) in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be efficiently controlled using the Aharanov-Bohm (AB) effect. When a static magnetic field (B) is applied along the tube, electronic wave functions acquire complex phases along the circumferential direction (AB effect), which modifies the band structure. In particular, when the magnetic field is applied to metallic CNTs, which can be regarded as one-dimensional massless Dirac systems, realistic values of B lead to a nonzero gap in the THz regime. We demonstrate that such change from gapless to gapped Dirac systems drastically increases the HHG intensity in the THz regime. In the gapless Dirac system, the velocity of each electron never changes under the electric field, and thus there is no HHG. On the other hand, the gap opening activates both the interband and itraband currents, which strongly contribute to HHG. Our work demonstrates a unique way to manipulate HHG in nanotubes by tuning electronic wave functions using the magnetic field and the tube structure.

Abstract:To accurately describe the persistent current for various toroidal carbon nanotubes (TCNs), a semiempirical sp(3) tight-binding model is presented, in which the intrinsic curvature and hybridization have been fully taken into account. The calculations show that the curvature and hybridization can induce dramatic changes in the energy spectra of TCNs such as the Fermi energy E-F shifting up, an energy gap opening at E-F, and the energy spectrum symmetry about E-F destroyed, which leads to a decrease of persistent current and changes in the shape of the flux-dependent current. In the presence of curvature and hybridization, the persistent current in non-armchair TCNs is nearly an order of magnitude lower than that obtained by using the Brillouin-zone folding approach, while it is of the same order of magnitude in armchair TCNs.

Abstract:The quantum interference in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a magnetic field parallel to their axes has been studied analytically. It is found that the quantum conductance changes with magnetic field periodically, which is consistent with the experimental observations. The rapid and slow conductance oscillation periods for both armchair and zigzag SWNTs have been derived analytically; they depend now on both the magnetic field and gate voltage in addition to the sample length. More interestingly, metallic zigzag SWNTs in an axial magnetic field can have slow conductance oscillation, which should not exist without a magnetic field being applied.

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of carriers bound to helical tube surfaces is investigated in a thin-layer quantization scheme. By numerically solving the open-boundary Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation in curvilinear coordinates, geometric effect on the coherent transmission spectra is analysed in the case of single propagating mode as well as multimode. It is shown that, the coiling endows the helical nanotube with different transport properties from a bent cylindrical surface. Fano resonance appears as a purely geometric effect in the conductance, the corresponding energy of quasibound state is obviously influenced by the torsion and length of the nanotube. We also find new plateaus in the conductance. The transport of double-degenerate mode in this geometry is reminiscent of the Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and spin angular momentum in quasi-one-dimensional structure.

Abstract:In the present work we discuss based on extensive fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations the dynamics of Neon atoms oscillating inside (5,5)single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and boron-nitride (BNNT) ones. Our results show that sustained high frequency oscillatory regimes are possible for a large range of temperatures. Our results also show that the general features of the oscillations are quite similar to CNT and BNNT, in contrast with some speculations in previous work literature about the importance of broken symmetry and chirality exhibited by BNNTs.

Quantum Interference Effects in Topological Nanowires In a Longitudinal Magnetic Field

Abstract:We study the magnetoconductance of topological insulator nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field, including Aharonov-Bohm, Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak, perfectly conducting channel, and universal conductance fluctuation effects. Our focus is on predicting experimental behavior in single wires in the quantum limit where temperature is reduced to zero. We show that changing the Fermi energy $E_F$ can tune a wire from from ballistic to diffusive conduction and to localization. In both ballistic and diffusive single wires we find both Aharonov-Bohm and Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations with similar strengths, accompanied by quite strong universal conductance fluctuations (UCFs), all with amplitudes between $0.3 \, G_0$ and $1\,G_0$. This contrasts strongly with the average behavior of many wires, which shows Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the ballistic regime and Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations in the diffusive regime, with both oscillations substantially larger than the conductance fluctuations. In single wires the ballistic and diffusive regimes can be distinguished by varying $E_F$ and studying the sign of the AB signal, which depends periodically on $E_F$ in ballistic wires and randomly on $E_F$ in diffusive wires. We also show that in long wires the perfectly conducting channel is visible at a wide range of energies within the bulk gap. We present typical conductance profiles at several wire lengths, showing that conductance fluctuations can dominate the average signal. Similar behavior will be found in carbon nanotubes.

Anomalous Vibrational Energy Diffusion in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We study the vibrational energy diffusion in single-walled carbon nanotubes by using the molecular-dynamics method. It is found that energy transports ballistically at low temperature and superdiffusively at room temperature. The velocity of energy transport along the axis in carbon nanotube at room temperature is about 0.10 A/fs. It is also found that energy transport in carbon nanotube is different from that one in one-dimensional carbon lattice with the same interaction potential.

Abstract:Confinement boundary effects, coupled with quantum size effects, on the electronic properties of capped armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes are investigated by use of the tight-binding method. We observe a long periodic oscillation (LPO) behavior of energy gap, except for the conventional short periodic oscillation (SPO) behavior, with the length of carbon nanotube. Different from the intrinsic SPO, the period of LPO is deeply dependent on the topological structure of the closure, but is less related to the tube diameter. It is shown that the LPO behavior results from a closure-induced shift of allowed wave vectors perpendicular to the tube axis.

Abstract:A new mechanism is proposed to explain the slow conductance fluctuations in the conductance-gate voltage plot observed in the nanotube electron resonators. It is found that the slow conductance fluctuation is an intrinsic quantum interference phenomenon and exists in all metallic nanotube resonators except zigzag ones. Analytical expressions for both slow and rapid oscillation periods of the conductance fluctuations have been derived, which are well consistent with the existing experiments. It is predicted that the ratio of the slow oscillation period to the rapid one is independent of the gate-voltage efficiency, and determined only by the nanotube length used in experiments.
