Abstract:This article presents a new approach of using dependency treebanks in theoretical syntactic research: The view of dependency treebanks as combined networks. This allows the usage of advanced tools for network analysis that quite easily provide novel insight into the syntactic structure of language. As an example of this approach, we will show how the network approach can provide an interesting angle to discuss the degree of connectivity of Chinese syntactic categories, which it is not so easy to detect from the original treebank.
