Abstract:Carbon with a theoretical lithium storage capacity of 372 mAh g(-1) has been widely used in commercial lithium-ion batteries. Increasing the capacity beyond this limit is highly desirable and needed, but challenging. Tailoring the structure and/or introducing heteroatom to carbon lattice may dramatically improve the lithium storage capability. Herein, in situ nitrogen-doped helical mesoporous carbonaceous nanotubes with ultra-high specific surface areas of 1170 m(2) g(-1) are designed. Applied as an anode material for LIBs, the as-prepared sample delivers a superior capacity of 1812 mA h g(-1) after 150 cycles at a current density of 123 mA g(-1) , and 1336 mA hg(-1) after 300 cycles at 372 mA g(-1) , suggesting that the unique nanoarchitecture provides plentiful lithium ion storage sites and facilitates the electrolyte and electron transport. The lone pairs of electrons of nitrogen atoms would alter the electronic properties of carbon, facilitating electron donation to Li ions. The strategy of rational design and synthesis of carbon nanostructures offer prospects in developing high-performance energy conversion and storage devices/systems. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Lignin-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon as a High-Rate Anode Material for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon anode materials have been prepared by a hard-template (SiO2 nanoparticles) method, in which alkali lignin-derived azo polymer (AL-azo-NO2) was used as a low-cost carbon precursor. The as-prepared N-doped carbon materials show a honeycomb-like morphology with uniform nanopores. These materials are able to reversibly insert Na+ ions and show promising cycling performance. In particular, the porous carbon material with larger surface area and pore volume delivers a higher initial capacity of 205 mAh g(-1) in the voltage range of 0.01-2 V at 50 mA g(-1), compared to the material with lower surface area and pore volume (only 155 mAh g(-1)). The former also exhibits much better rate capability than the latter. Even at a high current density of 1 Ag-1, it shows a high specific capacity of 101 mAh g(-1) after 1100 cycles, which retains 92% of its initial capacity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results prove that the enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the improved Na+-ions kinetics in this material. This work presents an alternative approach for the synthesis of high-rate carbonaceous anode materials for sodium ion batteries from low cost and sustainable feedstock. Abstract:Nonaqueous lithium-oxygen battery with nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets (N-GNSs) as cathode materials delivered a discharge capacity of 11660mAhg−1, which is about 40% higher than that with the pristine graphene nanosheets (GNSs). The electrocatalytic activity of N-GNSs for oxygen reduction in the nonaqueous electrolyte is 2.5 times as that of GNSs. The excellent electrochemical performance of N-GNSs is attributed to the defects and functional groups as active sites introduced by nitrogen doping.

Abstract:A novel approach is developed to synthesize a nitrogen-doped porous Co3O4/anthracite-derived graphene (Co3O4/AG) nanocomposite through a combined self-assembly and heat treatment process using resource-rich anthracite as a carbonaceous precursor. The nanocomposite contains uniformly distributed Co3O4 nanoparticles with a size smaller than 8 nm on the surface of porous graphene, and exhibits a specific surface area (120 m2·g-1), well-developed mesopores distributed at 3~10 nm, and a high level of nitrogen doping (5.4 at. %). These unique microstructure features of the nanocomposite can offer extra active sites and efficient pathways during the electrochemical reaction, which are conducive to improvement of the electrochemical performance for the anode material. The Co3O4/AG electrode possesses a high reversible capacity of 845 mAh·g-1 and an excellent rate capacity of 587 mAh·g-1. Furthermore, a good cyclic stability of 510 mAh·g-1 after 100 cycles at 500 mA·g-1 is maintained. Therefore, this work could provide an economical and effective route for the large-scale application of a Co3O4/AG nanocomposite as an excellent anode material in lithium-ion batteries.
NiCo Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Tubes As Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A novel solution has been proposed in this study to address electrode chalking and capacity degradation issues associated with transition metals as anodic materials in Li-ion batteries. The new strategy is based on constructing nitrogen-doped carbon shell-covered transition metal nanoparticles. In this study, the design of one-dimensional nanotubes and the introduction of nitrogen atoms improve electronic conductivity and electrode integrity and also provide abundant active sites for lithium-ion battery reactions. In the first step, carbon-coated NiCo compounds were synthesized by using acetate ions as the carbon source and Ni and Co as the metal sources. Subsequently, nitrogen-doped carbon CNT-encapsulated NiCo nanoparticles (NiCo-N-C-1, NiCo-N-C-2, and NiCo-N-C-3) were successfully prepared by utilizing the precursors from the first step and using melamine as the nitrogen source for introducing nitrogen atoms. The unique one-dimensional nanotube structure of NiCo-N-C-2 anodes demonstrated a discharge capacity equal to 639.4 mAh g(-1) following 300 cycles at a current density (I-d) equal to 0.5 A g(-1) with an extended reversible capacity equal to 442.5 mAh g(-1) following 1400 cycles at I-d = 2 A g(-1), demonstrating the potential application of NiCo-N-C-2 nanotubes in Li-ion batteries with a high power density and an extended cycle life. Moreover, as it was coupled with the LiFePO4 cathode, the prepared Li-ion full cell demonstrated a capacity retention equal to 91.4% following 500 cycles at I-d = 1 C (0.1 C=170 mA h g(-1)), further highlighting the high capacity, excellent multiplication, and cycling performance of the NiCo-N-C electrode. This simple synthesis strategy offers a new approach to fabricating high-performance carbon and nitrogen-clad metal particle composites with promising applications in various energy-related fields.

Abstract:A dual-doping approach for nitrogen-doped carbon-coated SnO2-SnS/graphene nanosheets (NC@SnO2-SnS/GN) has been developed, using hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose with SnO2-decorated graphene and ammonium thiocyanate and a subsequent thermal treatment. The resulting hybrid manifests a typical two-dimensional core-shell architecture, with a N-doped carbon coating over the SnS- and SnO2-decorated graphene nanosheets. Used as the anode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), N-C@SnO2-SnS/GN delivers a high specific capacity of 1236 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) after 110 cycles, which outperforms most state-of-the-art tin-based LIB anodes with core-shell structures.
High Rate Capability of TiO2/nitrogen-doped Graphene Nanocomposite As an Anode Material for Lithium–ion Batteries

Abstract:TiO2/nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposite was synthesized by a facile gas/liquid interface reaction. The structure and morphology of the sample were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that nitrogen atoms were successfully doped into graphene sheets. The TiO2 nanoparticles (8-13 nm in size) were homogenously anchored on the nitrogen-doped graphene sheets through gas/liquid interface reaction. The as-prepared TiO2/nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposite shows a better electrochemical performance than the TiO2/graphene nanocomposite and the bare TiO2 nanoparticles. TiO2/nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposite exhibits excellent cycling stability and shows high capacity of 136 mAh g(-1) (at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)) after 80 cycles. More importantly, a high reversible capacity of 109 mAh g(-1) can still be obtained even at a super high current density of 5000 mA g(-1). The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to the good electronic conductivity introduced by the nitrogen-doped graphene sheets and the positive synergistic effect between nitrogen-doped graphene sheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. Abstract:In order to prepare anode materials with a high specific capacity, super rate performance and relatively good stability, the N, S dual-doped porous graphene aerogels/natural graphite composites (denoted as N, S-pGA/NG) were designed via annealing incorporation with hydrothermal method in this paper. Commercial graphite anode materials were modified by adding a small amount of N/S dual-doped Porous graphene aerogels to make them have excellent electrochemical properties. At the same time, in order to further explain the internal mechanism of nitrogen and sulfur atoms doped graphene to improve the properties of natural graphite anode electrodes, we used density functional theory to calculate the adsorption energy, static charge and density of states, which proved that the this optimization's mechanism may lie in the effect of nitrogen and sulfur co-doping on the adsorption behavior of lithium atoms. Therefore, the N, S-pGA/NG exhibited high capacities (531 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C), improved rate performance (277 mAh g(-1) at 2 C), and good cycling stability. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Carbon materials are among the most important materials used for anodes in rechargeable batteries due to their extensive resources and good cycling stability. However, the electrochemical performance of carbon-based anodes is closely related with their electronic states and morphologies/microstructures. Herein, we present a simple approach to synthesize a nitrogen-doped 3D nanocarbon (N-Carbon) with nanopore defects as high-capacity and stable anodes for sodium/lithium-ion batteries. This carbon material well inherits the unique nanosheet-like morphology of the template, which is composed of twisted-interconnected cuboidal hollow nanocages with a large number of nanopores across the shells. N-Carbon with integration of N heteroatom and 3D porous structure exhibits high reversible capacities of sodium-ion batteries, up to 401.9 and 311.7 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 0.5 A g−1 after 100 cycles, respectively. This unique carbon material simultaneously exhibits excellent rate capability and cycling stability, with reversible capacities of 199.7 and 97.9 mAh g−1 at large current densities of 1 and 5 A g−1 even after 10,000 cycles, respectively. Moreover, N-Carbon also exhibits high capacity of 709 mAh g−1 for lithium-ion batteries after 2500 cycles at 10 A g−1. The excellent reversibility, rate capability, and cycling stability are attributed to this unique N-Carbon integrating into rich nitrogen-doped induced ion-storage sites and its relative ordered 3D pore structure.

Abstract:N-doped carbon materials is of particular attraction for anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high surface areas, superior electrical conductivity, and excellent mechanical strength, which can store energy by adsorption/desorption of Li+ at the interfaces between the electrolyte and electrode. By directly carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanospheres synthesized by an emulsion-based interfacial reaction, we obtained N-doped hollow carbon nanospheres with tunable shell thickness (20 nm to solid sphere) and different N dopant concentrations (3.9 to 21.7 at %). The optimized anode material possessed a shell thickness of 20 nm and contained 16.6 at % N dopants that were predominately pyridinic and pyrrolic. The anode delivered a specific capacity of 2053 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and 879 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 for 1000 cycles, implying a superior cycling stability. The improved electrochemical performance can be ascribed to (1) the Li+ adsorption dominated energy storage mechanism prevents the volume change of the electrode materials, (2) the hollow nanostructure assembled by the nanometer-sized primary particles prevents the agglomeration of the nanoparticles and favors for Li+ diffusion, (3) the optimized N dopant concentration and configuration facilitate the adsorption of Li+; and (4) the graphitic carbon nanostructure ensures a good electrical conductivity.
Optimized design of 3D nitrogen-doped graphene-like carbon derived from g-C3N4 encapsulated nano-Si as high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Silicon anode is attracted enormous attention due to ultra-high theoretical capacity. However, the volume change of nearly 300% and poor conductivity stymie the application of silicon anodes. It is of fundamental importance and challenge to solve this problem. Here, the porous Si/nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Si/NCNS) composites are successfully synthesized by in situ growth of nano-silicon on a graphene-like carbon. The in-situ growth of nano-SiO2 is introduced through the electrostatic interaction on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNS) by hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Subsequently, SiO2 nanoparticles are reduced to porous Si and the nitrogen of CNNS is partially removed to form nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCNS) via a magnesiothermic reduction route. Importantly, NCNS not only provides rapid transferring channels for electrons and lithium ions but also relieves volumetric changes of Si, which contributes to ameliorating electrochemical performance. The optimal Si/NCNS-1 composite exhibits excellent electrochemical performances of 1106.7 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles with the capacity retentions of 93.6%, and the coulombic efficiency remains above 99.5%. This controllable synthesis method provides a potential building for the application of Si anode.

Abstract:Li3VO4 nanoparticles in N-doped carbon with porous structure are synthesized using supermolecular aggregates formed by melamine and citric acid as the nitrogen source, via a dry-freezing process, followed with a calcination. Nitrogen doping enhances the interaction between Li(3)VO(4 )and carbon, reduces the charge-transfer resistance over the interface, and restrains the pulverization and aggregation upon cycling. The design of porous structure accelerates the permeation of electrolyte and increases the contact between active materials and electrolyte. The synergistic effects between N-doped carbon and porous structure significantly improve the electrochemical performances. Thus, this composite delivers a capacity of 405.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) or 199.9 mAh g(-1) at 10.0 A g(-1) within 0.2-3.0 V. After 1000 cycles at 4.0 A g(-1), the specific capacity is still kept as 236.6 mAh g(-1) . By pairing with commercial LiCoO2, this composite delivers a high energy density of 195.05 Wh kg(total)(-1) at 70.52 W kg(total)(-1), and 94.06 Wh kg(total)(-1) at 3.9 kW kg(total)(-1).
Reconfiguration of the Charge Density Difference of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene by Covalently Bonded Cu-N4 Active Sites Boosting Thermodynamics and Performance in Aprotic Li-CO2 Battery

Abstract:The slow kinetics of the CO2 reduction and evolution reactions in the Li-CO2 battery result in a high overpotential, low energy efficiency and undesired life. Exploring the durable electrocatalysts with high activity for CO2 reduction and evolution processes in aprotic Li-CO2 batteries is of great significance for CO2 capture and utilization. Herein, single-atom copper uniformly anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene (SA-Cu-NG) was demonstrated as a durable catalyst for the rechargeable Li-CO2 battery. The resulting Li-CO2 battery shows a remarkable specific capacity of 29033 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, an ultra-long life up to 538 cycles (over 2730 h), and a low overpotential of 1.47 V (1000 mA g−1), outperforming the reported Li-CO2 batteries. The X-ray absorption fine structure analysis of SA-Cu-NG unravels that the covalent effect between Cu and N, which exists in the form of Cu-N4 in nitrogen-doped graphene. Further, it is theoretically elucidated that the covalent effect of Cu-N4 leads to the reconfiguration of the charge density difference on nitrogen-doped graphene, thereby improving the adsorption of CO2 and weakening the decomposition barrier of the discharge products on the surface single-atom copper, thus optimizing the nucleation decomposition process. In conclusion, the exceptional performances of Li-CO2 battery are attributed to the superior catalytic activity on Cu-N4 sites and the excellent electronic conductivity of nitrogen-doped graphene, activating the reversible process of discharge product formation and decomposition.

Abstract:The development of advanced Li4Ti5O12 anode with high capacity and long cycle-life is a central issue for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. In this study, we report that a novel composite, nanosized Li4Ti5O12 particles supported by N-doped graphene sheets, has been successfully prepared by a facile and rapid strategy. Compared to the pure Li4Ti5O12 anode, improved electronic conductivity, higher flexibility and enhanced mechanical strength are demonstrated in N-doped graphene modified Li4Ti5O12. When used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the specific discharge capacities of the pure and N-doped graphene modified Li4Ti5O12 electrodes for the first cycle at a current density of 0.5C between 1.0 and 2.5V (vs. Li+/Li) are 163.6 and 171.2mAhg−1, respectively, and their capacity retentions over 100 cycles are 96.1% and 99.3%, respectively. Moreover, the high-rate capacities of N-doped graphene decorated anode are also much better than that of the pure Li4Ti5O12 at various current densities. Even at 40C, it can still achieve a high reversible capacity of 136.9mAhg−1 and tolerate a long-term cycling with 1000 cycles. This design strategy provides a promising pathway for developing high-performance Li4Ti5O12 anode for Li-ion batteries.

In this work, magnesiothermic denitriding technology is demonstrated to reduce the nitrogen content of g-C3N4 (especially graphitic nitrogen) for enhanced lithium storage properties as lithium ion battery anodes. The obtained nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4 (ND-g-C3N4) exhibits a thinner and more porous structure composed of an abundance of relatively low nitrogen doping wrinkled graphene nanosheets. A highly reversible lithium storage capacity of 2753 mAh/g was obtained after the 300th cycle with an enhanced cycling stability and rate capability. The presented nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4 with outstanding electrochemical performances may unambiguously promote the application of g-C3N4 materials in energy-storage devices.

Abstract:One of the most important research areas related to Li-ion batteries is the replacement of the graphite anode with other carbon materials such as hard carbons, activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, porous carbons, and carbon fibers. Although such materials have shown better electrochemical performance for lithium storage compared to graphite, there is plenty of room for improvement. One of the most effective approaches is to dope heteroatoms (e. g. nitrogen) in the structure of the carbon materials to improve their electrochemical performance when they are used as anode materials. We first describe how N-doping has a positive effect on lithium storage and then provide numerous selected examples of this approach being applied to various carbon materials. The characterization of N doped in the structure of different carbon materials by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy is then presented since they are able to characterize the N in these structures with a high (atomic) resolution. Finally, a statistical analysis is performed to show how the amount of doped N affects the specific capacity of the N-doped carbon materials.

Superhigh Capacity and Rate Capability of High-Level Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Sheets As Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A new facile approach is proposed to synthesize nitrogen-doped graphene sheets with the nitrogen-doping level as high as 7.04 at.% by thermal annealing pristine graphene sheets and low-cost industrial material melamine. The high-level nitrogen-doped graphene sheets exhibit a superhigh initial reversible capacity of 1123 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 50 mA g(-1). More significantly, even at an extremely high current density of 20 A g(-1), highly stable capacity of about 241 mAh g(-1) could still be obtained. Such an electrochemical performance is superior to those previously reported nitrogen-doped graphene sheets. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the two-dimensional structure, disordered surface morphology, high nitrogen-doping level, and the existence of pyridinic nitrogen atoms. The results indicate that the high-level nitrogen-doped graphene sheets could be a promising anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The formation of a core-shell structure by coating silicon (Si) nanoparticles with a carbon layer is considered a promising method to address the poor conductivity of a Si-based anode and volume expansion of silicon particles during the charging/discharging process. However, Si/C composite anodes usually perform below expectations with a single layer of carbon utilized as the coating layer, while introducing multilayer carbon coating results in the additional complexity and cost. To overcome this challenge, in this work, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) had been simply mixed with the Si nanoparticles to form the Si/WPU composite via the hydrogen bonds, and the core-shell structure with the single carbon layer containing N atoms (Si@NC) was obtained after the pyrolysis of the composite. The carbon layer not only significantly alleviated the breakage of the anode caused by the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles but also optimized the rate performance of the anode. At a current density of 0.5 A g(-1), the discharge specific capacity of the Si@NC anode is still as high as 945.63 mAh g(-1) after 300 cycles, surpassing various single-layer carbon and multilayer carbon-coated Si-based anodes. This work provides a convenient and feasible method for preparing economical Si/C composite anode materials.
