Abstract:NO was oxidized into NO2 first by injecting ozone into flue gas stream,and then NO2 was absorbed from flue gas by urea,sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide solution. The mole ratio of O3 to NO,inlet NO and SO2 concentration in flue gas,and relative humidity were investigated in the influence of NO oxidation. The experimental results indicated that the optimal molar ratio of O3 to NO is 1. 02. NO conversion decreased with the increase of NO concentration. The SO2 concentration and the relative humidity in flue gas have few effects on the NO oxidation. The absorption products of NOx oxidized by ozone injection with NaOH aqueous solution were analyzed. And the characterization results showed that NO was little absorbed by alkaline aqueous solution, while the NO2 absorption efficiency was more than 80%.

Abstract:The influence of NO concentration and O2 content on NO removal efficiency, FeII(EDTA) oxidation rate and FeIII(EDTA) bioreduction rate were investigated at the coexistence of NO and O2 in a stuffing absorption tower, and the main reaction process of this system was analyzed. Simultaneous NO absorption could promote the oxidation of FeII(EDTA), the apparent oxidation reaction rate constant increased from 0.00451mm1 to 0.00604mm-1, when NO concentration of input gas increased from 0 to 500cm3/m3. The oxidation reaction of FeIII(EDTA) by O2 was first order reaction, apparent oxidation rate constant had liner relation with O2 content. Increase of NO concentration or O2 content in gas could all lower the bioreduction reaction rate of FeIII(EDTA). The intermediates of NO2 - and NO3 - in NO absorption could be reduced by microorganisms, which decreased the stimulated oxidation of FeIII(EDTA) caused by the intermediates, thus the influence of coexistence of O2 and NO in gas phase on FeIII(EDTA) bioreduction was smaller than the influence sum of each single component.

Abstract:The oxidation removal of nitric oxide (NO) from flue gas using UV photolysis of aqueous hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2 and NaClO) in a photochemical spraying reactor was studied. The key parameters (e.g., light intensity, hypochlorite concentration, solution temperature, solution pH, and concentration of NO, SO2, O2, and CO2), mechanism and kinetics of NO oxidation removal were investigated. The results demonstrate that UV and hypochlorite have a significant synergistic role for promoting the production of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and enhancing NO removal. NO removal was enhanced with the increase of light intensity, hypochlorite concentration, or O2 concentration but was inhibited with the increase of NO or CO2 concentration. Solution temperature, solution pH, and SO2 concentration have double the effect on NO removal. NO is oxidized by ·OH and hypochlorite, and ·OH plays a key role in NO oxidation removal. The rate equation and kinetic parameters of NO oxidation removal were also obtained, which can provide an important theoretical basis for studying the numerical simulation of NO absorption process and the amplification design of the reactor.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the components of fossil flue gases that give rise to serious environmental and health hazards. Among the available techniques for NOx removal, microalgae-based biological removal of NOx (BioDeNOx) is a promising and competent technology with eco-friendly path of low energy and low-cost solution for the pollution. In this review article, current biological technologies including bacteria-based and microalgae-related BioDeNOx are discussed. Comparing to direct BioDeNOx approach, indirect BioDeNOx by microalgae is more promising since it is more stable, reliable and efficient. By transforming inorganic nitrogen nutrients to organic nitrogen, microalgae can potentially play an important role in converting NOx into high-value added products. The microalgae-based BioDeNOx process displays an attractive prospect for flue gas treatment to reduce environmental NOx pollution and potentially supply protein products, establishing an efficient circular-economy strategy.

Abstract:In addition to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) which are available to remove NO x from flue gas, oxidation method is receiving more and more attention because this method makes it possible to remove NO x and SO 2 from flue gas simultaneously by wet scrubbing. O 3 as a strong oxidant has a high oxidation capacity and it can oxide NO to N 2 O 5 which has a higher water solubility compared with NO 2 . However, it needs a long reaction time and the escape of unreacted ozone may cause secondary pollution. In this study, FeMnCo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst and FeMnCe/Al 2 O 3 catalyst were prepared and applied to enhance the deep oxidation of NO x with ozone and reduce O 3 slip. Effects of various operating parameters such as O 3 /NO ratio, gas residence time, and operating temperature were evaluated, and the results demonstrate that N 2 O 5 began to generate when O 3 /NO ratio was higher than 1.0 and increased with increasing O 3 /NO ratio. Little residual O 3 was formed in the presence of catalyst, while 350 ppm O 3 was measured at the outlet gas when O 3 /NO ratio was controlled at 2.0. The N 2 O 5 conversion efficiency increased with increasing gas residence time and operating temperature, and the highest N 2 O 5 conversion efficiency was achieved at 100°C. Furthermore, the conversion efficiency remained around 90% during 20 h operation over FeMnCe/Al 2 O 3 catalyst with an O 3 /NO ratio of 1.73, a gas residence time of 1.2 s, and a temperature of 100°C. On the other hand, the N 2 O 5 conversion efficiency remained around 80% during 3 h operation over FeMnCo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. Overall, FeMnCe/Al 2 O 3 catalyst reveals good potential for deep oxidation of NO by O 3 and can be further developed as a viable catalyst for reducing NO emission from industries. Implications : In this study, FeMnCo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst and FeMnCe/Al 2 O 3 catalyst were applied to enhance the deep oxidation of NO into N 2 O 5 with O 3 . The catalysts can improve the conversion of NO into N 2 O 5 , shorten the reaction time and reduce the unreacted O 3 slip, which are beneficial to reduce the size of the reactor required and cost of APCDs (air pollution control devices) in practical application. This method can make it possible to simultaneously remove NO x and SO 2 from flue gas by wet scrubbing for reducing NO emissions from industries, especially small and medium scaled industries, to meet increasingly stringent emission standards.

Catalytic Deep Oxidation of NO by Ozone over MnOx Loaded Spherical Alumina Catalyst

Abstract:The deep oxidation of NO by ozone, converting NO into N2O5, combined with wet flue gas treatment is an attractive method for simultaneously reduction of NOx and SO2 to ultra-low concentrations. However, the long residence time required, excessive ozone usage and consequent ozone leakage are serious problems for this technology. A catalyst of MnOx loaded onto spherical alumina support material was prepared, which displayed excellent properties that would reduce the associated problems of deep oxidation of NO by ozone. Experiments performed with the stoichiometric O-3/NOx ratio, 1.5, showed an NO2 concentration reduction from 600 ppm to 100 ppm at 100 degrees C after 0.12 s residence time, and an ozone leakage of less than 20 ppm. The NO deep oxidation efficiency exceeded 95% for O-3/NOx >1.57, and the catalyst showed good stability, even with SO2. A mechanism for catalytic deep oxidation of NO by ozone was proposed, with two pathways based on the catalytic decomposition of ozone. In the first pathway, ozone is decomposed into active oxygen atoms on the catalyst surface; in the second pathway, the manganese(III) was oxidized into manganese(IV) and manganese(VII) by the decomposition of ozone. Subsequently, NO2 adsorbed on the catalyst surface is oxidized by active oxygen atoms or oxidized manganese ions, generating NO3 and nitrates. Finally, N2O5, formed by the combination of NO2 and NO3, is desorbed from the catalyst surface. The results of several characterizations, including XRD, XPS, H-2-TPR, TGA, TPD, FTIR, and BET, revealed that the second mechanism was the most dominant during the catalytic ozonation process. Additionally, the presence of ozone improved the catalyst adsorption of NOx, and O-2, especially with exposure to SO2, and demonstrated better performance regarding SO2 poisoning than catalytic oxidation of NO by O-2. Abstract:In order to purify various pollutants (3108mg COD/L, 2120mg NH3-N/L) in the undiluted anaerobic digestion effluent of food wastes (UADEFW), ozonation pretreatment was employed to improve pollutants removal by microalgae mutant Chlorella PY-ZU1 with 15% CO2. Ozonation pretreatment broke CC bonds and benzene rings of refractory organics such as unsaturated fatty acids and phenols in UADEFW and degraded them into low-molecular-weight organics such as methanoic acid and methanal, but excessive ozone induced the accumulation of toxic by-products. The microalgal growth rate and biomass yield markedly increased to the peaks of 456mg/L/d and 4.3g/L, respectively, when the UADEFW was pretreated with 2mg-O3/mg-C of ozone. The removal efficiencies of NH3-N, TP and COD reached 99%, 99% and 68%, respectively. The lipid and carbohydrate contents of microalgal biomass increased because of the relative lack of nitrogen when microalgae was cultured with 15% CO2 to purify the UADEFW with ozonation pretreatment.

Abstract:The integrated removal technology of SO2, NOx and CO2 is an emerging low-cost flue gas purification technology, in which the oxidation of NO is the key to this technology. In view of the fact that the UV-enhanced NO oxidation by H2O2 has the advantages of simple process, good maneuverability and easy enlargement, a pilot system was established to explore the apparent kinetics of NO Oxidation. The influences of NO concentration in flue gas, dosage of H2O2, UV radiation intensity and temperature on the reaction were investigated sequentially. After regressing corresponding parameters based on experimental data, an apparent kinetic model to describe the NO oxidation by H2O2 enhanced by UV irradiation is obtained, which provides a reference for further design on a larger-scale plant.
Beyond Purification: Highly Efficient and Selective Conversion of NO into Ammonia by Coupling Continuous Absorption and Photoreduction under Ambient Conditions.

Abstract:Although the selective catalytic reduction technology has been confirmed to be effective for nitrogen oxide (NOx) removal, green and sustainable NOx re-utilization under ambient conditions is still a great challenge. Herein, we develop an on-site system by coupling the continuous chemical absorption and photocatalytic reduction of NO in simulated flue gas (CNO = 500 ppm, GHSV = 18,000 h-1), which accomplishes an exceptional NO conversion into value-added ammonia with competitive conversion efficiency (89.05 ± 0.71%), ammonia production selectivity (95.58 ± 0.95%), and ammonia recovery efficiency (>90%) under ambient conditions. The anti-poisoning capacities, including the resistance against factors of H2O, SO2, and alkali/alkaline/heavy metals, are also achieved, which presents strong environmental practicability for treating NOx in flue gas. In addition, the critical roles of corresponding chemical absorption and catalytic reduction components are also revealed by in situ characterizations. The emerging strategy herein not only achieves a milestone efficiency for sustainable NO purification but also opens a new route for contaminant resourcing in the near future of carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) provides highly efficient SO2 removal in industrial flue gas treatment. Although NO and NO2 are not readily absorbed in the traditional desulfurization wash tower, deep oxidation with ozone can promote the formation of N2O5 that is absorbed in the washing fluid, making possible simultaneous denitration and desulfurization in the WGFD unit. This paper presents a survey of operating parameters for NOx removal after ozone deep oxidation using a Na2CO3-based WFGD. The effects of preoxidation time, Na2CO3 aqueous solution concentration, spray liquid/gas ratio, gas residence time in wash tower, and SO2 concentration on NOx removal efficiency were investigated systematically in a variable-configuration experimental setup. The results demonstrate that preoxidation time was the most sensitive factor in N2O5 formation, although oxidation continued in the wash tower. Thus, one strategy for a system where physical constraints limit the volume of the oxidation chamber is to extend the flue gas residence time in the wash tower. Increasing the liquid/gas ratio and Na2CO3 solution concentration gave some enhancement on the wet absorption process. Under optimal laboratory conditions, 95% NOx removal efficiency was achieved. Addition of SO2 yielded a slight inhibition for NOx removal, and under industrial relevant operating conditions, 98% SO2 and 62% NOx removal was achieved during 50 min experimental runs.
A new approach for the effective removal of NO from flue gas by using an integrated system of oxidation−absorption−biological reduction

Abstract:A new process of NOx removal from flue gas, using an integrated system of oxidation−absorption−biological reduction (OABR), is introduced. The experimental results show that increasing the NOx oxidation ratio in flue gas can effectively improve the NOx removal efficiency of the OABR system. The NOx removal efficiency could reach 98.8% with 0.02 M NaHCO3 as the chemical absorbent and under the condition of the optimal NOx oxidation ratio of 50%. During stable operation, the OABR system could maintain a high NOx removal efficiency (above 94%) under the following conditions: 1−8 vol% (104−8 × 104 ppmv) O2, 200−800 ppmv NOx, 0.5−1.5 L/min gas flow rate and 100−800 ppmv SO2. The nitrogen equilibrium results showed that about 59% of the nitrogen in the inlet NOx were transformed to N2 through microbial denitrification, 37% of the nitrogen were converted to biological nitrogen for microbial growth, and only 1.1% of the nitrogen remained in the liquid phase. This new approach has an excellent NOx removal performance and great potential for industrial application.

Abstract:A novel photo-catalytic oxidation method using ultraviolet (UV) and iron-loaded titanium dioxide (Fe/TiO2) catalyst was developed to remove NO from the flue gas, by which the removal efficiency of 53.4% was achieved without extra oxidant, and the efficiencies were 79.5% and 93.6% when 2 wt% and 4 wt% H2O2 were used, respectively. Increasing temperature and O2 concentration could facilitate the NO removal; neutral/alkaline solution and UV wavelength of 185 nm were more effective in removing NO, while the excess SO2 and gas flow rate were not conducive to remove NO. Besides, the NO removal mechanism was preliminarily speculated, in which •OH and O3 were determined to be the main oxidizing species in the photolysis and photo-catalysis of H2O/O2, the radicals were also formed in the catalysis of photo-generated H2O2 by Fe/TiO2, and the main removal product was identified as NO3 − by ion chromatography (IC). Meanwhile, the stability and reuse of catalyst were investigated by the recycling test.

Abstract:The Nannochloropsis oculata (Nanno) concentration increased by about 16.7%, compared with the origi-nal one (0,Gy) when Nanno was irradiated with 500 Gy.The highest biomass dry weight of Nanno 500,Gy reached 1.89,g/L,which was increased by about 100%, when the algae was cultured for 7 days with 6%, CO2.The highest microalgal biomass dry weight reached 4.26,g/L when 10,mmol nitrate and 0.82,mmol phosphate were in batch added to the F/2,medium.When the flue gas rate was up to 150,m3/h,the microalgal growth rate reached 25.7,g/(m2·d) in industrial production,and the inorganic carbon concentration reached 7.2,mmol.
Integrated system for the treatment of oxides of nitrogen from flue gases

Abstract:A novel and effective system was developed for the complete treatment of NOx from flue gases. The system consisted of photocatalytic or ozone oxidation of NOx, followed by scrubbing and biological denitrification. Maximum photocatalytic oxidation of NOx was achieved while using powdered TiO2 at a catalytic loading rate of 10 g/h, relative humidity of 50%, and a space time of 10 s. The used catalyst was regenerated and reused. A total of 72% of oxidized NO was recovered as HNO3/HNO2 in the regeneration process. Stoichiometrically, 10% excess ozone was able to affect 100% oxidation of NO to NO2. Presence of SO2 adversely influenced the oxidation of NO by ozone. The scrubbing of NO was effective with distilled water. Heterotrophic denitrifiers were able to denitrify the leachate with an efficiency of 90%, using sewage (COD 450 mg/L) as electron donor. The new integrated treatment system seems to be a promising alternative for complete treatment of NOx from flue gases.

Abstract:High-efficiency Fe(II)EDTA (approximately 80%) was selected to remove nitric oxide (NO) in a complex adsorption process; subsequently, this Fe(II)EDTA was combined with the anammox process to eliminate the NO in flue gas. The Fe(Il)EDTA-NO solution negatively affected the conventional nitrite-dependent anammox bacteria when the solution concentration exceeded 0.5 mM. Fe(II)EDTA-NO-cultivated anammox bacteria removed the ammonium coupled to complex NO reduction (<= 3.5 mM). The batch test results demonstrated that NH4+ was eliminated through Fe(II)EDTA-NO reduction via anammox. The removal of complex NO and NH4+ exhibited high relativity relevance, and the Fe(II)EDTA-NO/NH4+ molar ratio was approximately 0.97. The complex NO-dependent process generates lesser nitrate than that generated by conventional anammox. Moreover, Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensitiensis became the dominant anammox bacterial community when the biomass is cultivated using the inoculated bacteria, and the proportion of the former increased to 90% from the initial 38% for ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis and library construction. Mass transfer characteristics and effect of flue gas used in microalgae culture

Abstract:Flue gas not only contains carbon dioxide (CO2) but also air pollutants (sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)). The effective utilization of flue gas could help us to reduce the cost of microalgal biomass production. This study assessed and explored the utilization of flue gas for the absorption characteristics of different components and their biological effect in microalgal culture systems. In abiotic absorption experiments, the absorptivity of CO2 was reduced by a maximum of 3.1%, and the concentration of the available carbon source in the culture medium was decreased by 6.7% when sulfur dioxide (SO2, at 100 mg/m3) was presented in the flue gas. Meanwhile, the presence of oxygen (O2, at 4%) in the flue gas improved the absorptivity of nitric oxide (NO). When Scenedesmus dimorphus was cultured using bisulfites and nitrites (at 10 mmol/L and 8 mmol/L, respectively) as the sulfur and nitrogen sources, SOx and NOx in the flue gas did not significantly affect growth of microalgal cells and the carbohydrate, lipid, and protein content. The consumption rates of nutrient elements were calculated, which could provide an adjustment strategy for the initial gas source when culturing microalgae with the flue gas. This study indicates that the flue gas used for microalgal culture should be partially desulfurized, so that the SOx and CO2 concentrations can optimize growth of microalgal cells, while the denitrification might not be needed since the flue gas can be oxidized to utilize the NO. KEY POINTS: • The concentration of the available carbon source in the culture medium was decreased when SO2 was presented in the flue gas, and the presence of O2 in the flue gas improved the absorptivity of NO. • An adjustment strategy for the initial gas source when culturing microalgae with the flue gas was firstly proposed. • For flue gas containing 10% CO2 and 60 mg/m3 of SO2, growth of Scenedesmus dimorphus showed no difference in cell growth in normal culture conditions.

Abstract:A process capable of simultaneously oxidizing NO, SO2, and Hg0 was proposed, using a high-voltage and short-duration positive pulsed corona discharge. By focusing on NO, SO2, and Hg0 oxidation efficiencies, the influences of pulse peak voltage, pulse frequency, initial concentration, electrode number, residence time and water vapor addition were investigated. The results indicate that NO, SO2 and Hg0 oxidation efficiencies depend primarily on the radicals (OH, HO2, O) and the active species (O3, H2O2, etc.) produced by the pulsed corona discharge. The NO, SO2 and Hg0 oxidation efficiencies could be improved as pulse peak voltage, pulse frequency, electrode number and residence time increased, but they were reduced with increasing initial concentrations. By adding water vapor, the SO2 oxidation efficiency was improved remarkably, while the NO oxidation efficiency decreased slightly. In our experiments, the simultaneous NO, SO2, and Hg0 oxidation efficiencies reached to 40%, 98%, and 55% with the initial concentrations 479 mg/m3, 1040 mg/m3, and 15.0 microg/m3, respectively.
Nitrogen Removal and Nitrous Oxide Emission in a Constant-Flow Multiple Anoxic and Aerobic Process

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission in a lab-scale constant-flow multiple anoxic (A) and aerobic (O) process, combined with the addition of suspended carriers, were investigated. Under steady state, 99.9% of ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), 76.8% of orthophosphate, and 80.2% of total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved. The N2O emission factor during nitrification was 0.8–1.9% of the oxidized NH4-N. The emission factor increased to 7.4–45.9% with the coexistence of heterotrophic activities. Extending the anoxic time from 30 to 90 min reduced the N2O emission factor from 1.6 to 1.0%. N2O emission was stimulated with nitrite (NO2-N) as the electron acceptor, with the N2O emission factor of 5.2–5.6%. Denitrification with internal organic carbon contributed 6.8% of reduced NO2-N to N2O. NO2-N might exert a crucial role in N2O emission independent of carbon source. For the acclimated microbial communities, Nitrospira and Nitrosospira were the dominant nitrifiers and responsible for the N2O emission during nitrification. Azospira, Dechloromonas, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, and unclassified genus of family Comamonadaceae might be responsible for N2O emission during denitrification. These findings may guide the design of multiple AO process for controlling N2O emission.
Application of a microalga, Tetradesmus obliquus PF3, for NO and CO2 removal from actual flue gas via cultivating in wastewater

Abstract:Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly anthropogenic emissions, are the primary drivers of climate change. The cultivation of microalgae represents a highly promising strategy for mitigating atmospheric GHG levels. The growth characteristics and GHG mitigation capabilities of Tetradesmus obliquus PF3 were investigated in domestic wastewater at a thermal power plant. The maximum cell density and productivity were 1.52 ± 0.01 g L-1 and 0.33 ± 0.01 g L-1 day-1, respectively. Utilizing a serial configuration of two reactors, the elimination efficiency of NO and CO2 attained values of 78 ± 4% and 14 ± 4%, respectively. NO concentration at the outlet was less than 24.6 ± 2.9 mg m-3, meeting the latest Chinese discharge limits. Besides, the recovery efficiency of NO and CO2 increased to 77 ± 8% and 2.24 ± 0.04%, respectively, compared to that of the single reactor (40 ± 3%, 0.9 ± 0.0%). A removal efficiency of over 90% was achieved for TN and TP in domestic wastewater. The concentrations of COD (76.5 mg L-1), NH4+-N (0.9 mg L-1), TN(6.31 mg L-1), and TP (0.35 mg L-1) in effluent were below the thresholds of 100 mg L-1, 25 mg L-1, none data, and 3 mg L-1, respectively, complying with the Chinese Discharge Standard (Class II criteria set forth) for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants Pollutants. The harvested biomass exhibited a high content of carbohydrates and proteins, making it a viable feedstock for biofuels and bio-fertilizers. Our results demonstrate that Tetradesmus obliquus PF3-based flue gas treatment technology can simultaneously realize GHG removal, wastewater bio-remediation, and biomass recovery.
