Abstract:The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), developed at U.S. Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), has been used for infrared and microwave satellite radiance simulations and their derivatives to the surface/atmospheric parameters in data assimilation, physical retrieval, and many others. The CRTM has also been applied visible sensors and visible channel radiance/reflectance is simulated for studying aerosol and cloud effect. Together with the CRTM aerosol optical depth (AOD) module, the MODIS AOD satellite products can be assimilated and enhance air quality forecasting. This paper gives an overview of the CRTM developments and functionalities as well as its applications.

Abstract:Cloudy sky spectral radiance at the top of the atmosphere has always been an important while difficult variable to simulate for fast radiative transfer models. In this paper, we focus on examining the impacts of cloud scattering properties on the spectral radiance signature of the High-spectral Resolution Infrared Atmospheric Sounder (HIRAS) onboard the Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) satellite by using the Advanced Radiative transfer Modeling System (ARMS) and the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). Cloud scattering properties used in the radiative transfer models are critical for modeling the spectral radiance under cloudy sky, which involves choices of appropriate cloud particle models and particle size distributions, etc. Multiple FY-3D HIRAS observations over Southern China and Southeast Asia with ice or liquid water cloud cover on 6 May 2018 are examined, respectively. Vertical atmospheric profiles are derived from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 reanalysis product. Cloud property retrievals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer are used. Cloud scattering property parameterization schemes based on spherical and nonspherical cloud particle shapes are implemented for liquid water and ice clouds in ARMS and CRTM, respectively. Results show that both ARMS and CRTM can well simulate the radiance at the HIRAS spectral ranges under liquid water cloud condition as compared with the HIRAS observation with mean absolute error (MAE) of brightness temperature of less than 1 K. However, for ice cloud conditions, ARMS model using assumed spherical ice properties exhibits large biases between simulation and observation. CRTM with nonspherical ice properties using 16-stream approximation shows MAE less than 1 K and MAE of about 1 K using 2-stream approximation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Examining Asian Dust Refractive Indices for Brightness Temperature Simulations in the 650–1135 Cm−1 Spectral Range

Abstract:In this paper, we modeled dust impacts on atmospheric radiative transfer in the thermal infrared region of 650-1135 cm(-1) by using the radiative transfer for TOVs model (RTTOV). We assessed three sets of Asian dust refractive indices (the Volz refractive index implemented in the RTTOV as default, and the Gobi and Taklamakan refractive indices) for brightness temperature simulations. The US 76 standard profile was employed to represent the atmospheric status. Three scenarios of high (532.6 similar to 575.2 hPa), middle (661 similar to 703.6 hPa) and low (786.3 similar to 825.8 hPa) dust layers and four cases of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 at 1000 cm(-1)) were considered in the simulations. It was found that the refractive indices have a clear impact on simulating the values and the spectral slope of brightness temperature in the mid-thermal infrared band. Brightness temperature difference (BTD) for different refractive indices (Gobi/Taklamakan-Volz) increases with the height of dust layer and the AOT. The BTD reaches similar to 4 K for the high dust layer (532.6 similar to 575.2 hPa) and the AOT of 1.5. Most BTDs (0.5-4 K) are much larger than the noise-equivalent temperature difference of high-spectral resolution infrared sounders. Even for the AOT of 0.1, BTDs for different refractive indices could be close to or larger than 0.2 K. This study emphasizes the requirement of accurate refractive indices according to dust origins for improving brightness temperature simulations and provides valuable references for potential improvement of dust retrievals. Abstract:Aerosol radiative effects have been studied extensively by climate and weather research communities. However, aerosol impacts on radiance in the context of data assimilation (DA) have received little research attention. In this study, we investigated the aerosol impacts on the assimilation of satellite radiances by incorporating time-varying three-dimensional aerosol distributions into the radiance observation operator. A series of DA experiments was conducted for August 2017. We assessed the aerosol impacts on the simulated brightness temperatures (BTs), bias correction and quality control (QC) algorithms for the assimilated infrared sensors, and analyzed temperature fields. We found that taking the aerosols into account reduces simulated BT in thermal window channels (8 to 13 μm) by up to 4 K over dust-dominant regions. The cooler simulated BTs result in more positive first-guess departures, produce more negative biases, and alter the QC checks about 20%/40% of total/assimilated observations at the wavelength of 10.39 μm. As a result, assimilating aerosol-affected BTs produces a warmer analyzed lower atmosphere and sea surface temperature which have better agreement with measurements over the trans-Atlantic region.

An Accurate and Efficient Radiative Transfer Model for Simulating All-Sky Images from Fengyun Satellite Radiometers

Abstract:Forward radiative transfer models (RTM) are an indispensable tool for quantitative applications of satellite radiometers, e.g., for data calibration, instrument development, retrieval, and so on. In this study, we develop an accurate and efficient RTM for radiometers onboard Fengyun satellites, namely FYRTM (RTM for Fengyun Radiometers). Correlated k-distribution models are developed to improve the computational efficiency for gas absorption, and the effects of cloud and aerosol multiple scattering and emission are accelerated with pre-computed look-up tables. FYRTM is evaluated with a rigorous simulation based on discrete ordinate radiative transfer model (DISORT) as well as a popular fast forward model, i.e., the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). Results indicate that FYRTM-based simulations are two to three orders of magnitudes faster than the DISORT-based simulations. Compared to the rigorous model, FYRTM relative errors are within 2% at solar channels, and brightness temperatures (BT) differences are within 1 K at infrared channels. Compared with CRTM, FYRTM is computationally similar at solar channels, but three times faster at infrared channels. Furthermore, simulated reflectances/BTs using FYRTM are in a good agreement with the satellite observations. Overall, FYRTM is capable to simulate satellite observations under different atmospheric conditions, and can be extended to other radiometers onboard the Fengyun satellites (both geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites). It is expected to play important roles in future applications with Fengyun observations.
Effects of Auxiliary Atmospheric State Parameters on the Aerosol Optical Properties Retrieval Errors of High-Spectral-resolution Lidar.

Abstract:A detailed assessment is carried out in relation to the influence of the uncertainties associated with the input auxiliary atmospheric state parameters on retrieving aerosol optical properties from high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) observations. The study starts from a review of the main spectral structure of the Rayleigh backscattering followed by evaluating the temperature effects on a backscattering cross section of atmospheric molecules based on numerical simulation. It shows that the transmittance of the background interference filter should be taken into account, depending on the full width at half maximum, although overall temperature dependence is negligible. Based on the Taylor expansion of the Tenti S6 model, the systematic errors arising from input temperature and pressure profiles are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the atmospheric pressure profiles have limited effects on the inversion results of aerosol optical parameters, as the atmospheric pressure is usually quite stable. The relative errors of the aerosol backscatter coefficient mainly stem from temperature profile errors and highly depend on the aerosol concentration. Quantitatively, the aerosol backscatter coefficient error could be larger than 5% with a 3 K deviation of temperature when the backscatter ratio is larger than 1.1. The accuracy of aerosol extinction coefficient retrieval is affected not only by the error in temperature, but also by the error in temperature lapse rate; the retrieval accuracy is more sensitive to the latter than the former. Further analysis based on the sounding temperature data shows that the variation of the temperature inversion layer during the night could induce a bias larger than 0.04 km-1 on the aerosol extinction coefficient retrieval. Therefore, the time resolution of temperature measurement from sounding balloons twice per day is too low to obtain an accurate retrieval of the aerosol optical properties from the HSRL.

Abstract:Abstract. The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), a sensor-based radiative transfer model, has been used within the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) system for directly assimilating radiances from infrared and microwave sensors. We conducted numerical experiments to illustrate how including aerosol radiative effects in CRTM calculations changes the GSI analysis. Compared to the default aerosol-blind calculations, the aerosol influences reduced simulated brightness temperature (BT) in thermal window channels, particularly over dust-dominant regions. A case study is presented, which illustrates how failing to correct for aerosol transmittance effects leads to errors in meteorological analyses that assimilate radiances from satellite infrared sensors. In particular, the case study shows that assimilating aerosol-affected BTs significantly affects analyzed temperatures in the lower atmosphere across several regions of the globe. Consequently, a fully cycled aerosol-aware experiment improves 1–5 d forecasts of wind, temperature, and geopotential height in the tropical troposphere and Northern Hemisphere stratosphere. Whilst both GSI and CRTM are well documented with online user guides, tutorials, and code repositories, this article is intended to provide a joined-up documentation for aerosol absorption and scattering calculations in the CRTM and GSI. It also provides guidance for prospective users of the CRTM aerosol option and GSI aerosol-aware radiance assimilation. Scientific aspects of aerosol-affected BT in atmospheric data assimilation are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The US Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) has developed its beta version of community radiative transfer model (CRTM). The CRTM is being implemented in the NCEP data assimilation system and is expected to produce significant impacts on utilization of current and future satellite instruments due to its flexible interface, advanced radiative transfer physical processes and efficiency and effectiveness of numerical computational schemes. The advanced physics in the CRTM includes Optimal Spectrum Sampling (OSS), land microwave emissivity, discrete ordinate method and successive order of interaction scheme for scattering and emitting atmospheres, to name a few.

Abstract:The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) has been implemented in the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) system at the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) to simulate microwave and infrared radiances. We investigate impacts on analysis from a recent sensor, Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS). Both retrievals and radiance assimilation using the SSMIS show that SSMIS is unique in precisely determining stratospheric temperatures. We also utilize the SSMIS radiance for studying Hurricane Katrina. A "control-run" using current NCEP analysis field and a "test-run" using additional SSMIS data are compared. It shows again that the SSMIS radiance assimilation is helpful for hurricane forecasting.
Validation of the Community Radiative Transfer Model by using CloudSat data

Abstract:[1] NOAA- 18 Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit- A ( AMSUA), Microwave Humidity Sounder ( MHS), and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer/ 3 ( AVHRR/ 3), along with collocated CloudSat data under nonprecipitation conditions, are used to validate the accuracy of the Community Radiative Transfer Model ( CRTM). The observed brightness temperatures ( BTs) from NOAA- 18 instruments are compared to those simulated by the CRTM using the inputs of CloudSat retrieved hydrometeor profiles. The forward model biases are computed for various cloudy conditions, which are required for the assimilation of satellite cloudy radiances in operational forecast systems. Simulated BTs under nonprecipitation, cloudy conditions are averaged in space to account for the cloud inhomogeneity within the sensors' fields of view. The simulated and observed BT fields, BT distributions, and BT difference distributions show good agreement for all microwave channels. Simulations under clear skies in general have low biases and standard deviation errors, and these errors are only marginally increased under cloudy conditions for microwave channels. For AVHRR channels 4 and 5, the biases and standard deviation errors are low and very accurate for clear and water cloud conditions. However, there are larger standard deviation errors under cirrus and mixed- phase cloud conditions for those channels. The spatial averaging method significantly reduced the standard deviation errors under cloudy conditions. In this study, we have validated the CRTM modules ( gaseous absorption model, cloud absorption and scattering model, and surface emissivity models over ocean) that generate optical properties of the atmosphere and surface in the microwave and thermal infrared spectral region.

Abstract:The nadir-viewing satellite radiances at shortwave infrared channels from 3.5 to 4.6 m are not currently assimilated in operational numerical weather prediction data assimilation systems and are not adequately corrected for applications of temperature retrieval at daytime. For satellite observations over the ocean during the daytime, the radiance in the surface-sensitive shortwave infrared is strongly affected by the reflected solar radiance, which can contribute as much as 20.0 K to the measured brightness temperatures (BT). The nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) emission in the 4.3-m CO2 band can add a further 10 K to the measured BT. In this study, a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is developed for the ocean surface and an NLTE radiance correction scheme is investigated for the hyperspectral sensors. Both effects are implemented in the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). The biases of CRTM simulations to Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) observations and the standard deviations of the biases are greatly improved during daytime (about a 1.5-K bias for NLTE channels and a 0.3-K bias for surface-sensitive shortwave channels) and are very close to the values obtained during the night. These improved capabilities in CRTM allow for effective uses of satellite data at short infrared wavelengths in data assimilation systems and in atmospheric soundings throughout the day and night.
Climate Response Due to Carbonaceous Aerosols and Aerosol-Induced SST Effects in NCAR Community Atmospheric Model CAM3.5

Abstract:This study used the Community Atmospheric Model 3.5 (CAM3.5) to investigate the effects of carbonaceous aerosols on climate. The simulations include control runs with 3 times the mass of carbonaceous aerosols as compared to the model's default carbonaceous aerosol mass, as well as no-carbon runs in which carbonaceous aerosols were removed. The slab ocean model (SOM) and the fixed sea surface temperature (SST) were used to examine effects of ocean boundary conditions. Throughout this study, climate response induced by aerosol forcing was mainly analyzed in the following three terms: (1) aerosol radiative effects under fixed SST, (2) effects of aerosol-induced SST feedbacks, and (3) total effects including effects of aerosol forcing and SST feedbacks. The change of SST induced by aerosols has large impacts on distribution of climate response; the magnitudes in response patterns such as temperature, precipitation, zonal winds, mean meridional circulation, radiative fluxes, and cloud coverage are different between the SOM and fixed SST runs. Moreover, different spatial responses between the SOM and fixed SST runs can also be seen in some local areas. This implies the importance of SST feedbacks on simulated climate response. The aerosol dimming effects cause a cooling predicted at low layers near the surface in most carbonaceous aerosol source regions. The temperature response shows a warming (cooling) predicted in the north (south) high latitudes, suggesting that aerosol forcing can cause climate change in regions far away from its origins. Our simulation results show that direct and semidirect radiative forcing due to carbonaceous aerosols decreases rainfall in the tropics. This implies that carbonaceous aerosols have possibly strong influence on weakening of the tropical circulation. Most changes in precipitation are negatively correlated with changes of radiative fluxes at the top of model. The changes in radiative fluxes at top of model are physically consistent with the response patterns in cloud fields. On global average, low-level cloud coverage increases, and mid- and high-level cloud coverage decreases in response to changes in radiative energy induced by aerosol forcing. An approximated moisture budget equation was analyzed in order to understand physical mechanism of precipitation changes induced by carbonaceous aerosols. Our results show that changes in tropical precipitation are mainly dominated are mainly dominated by the dynamic effect (i.e., vertical moisture transport carried by the perturbed flow).
Three-Dimensional Variational Assimilation of Modis Aerosol Optical Depth: Implementation and Application to A Dust Storm over East Asia

Abstract:Assimilation of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) total aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval products (at 550 nm wavelength) from both Terra and Aqua satellites have been developed within the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. This newly developed algorithm allows, in a one-step procedure, the analysis of 3-D mass concentration of 14 aerosol variables from the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) module. The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) was extended to calculate AOD using GOCART aerosol variables as input. Both the AOD forward model and corresponding Jacobian model were developed within the CRTM and used in the 3DVAR minimization algorithm to compute the AOD cost function and its gradient with respect to 3-D aerosol mass concentration. The impact of MODIS AOD data assimilation was demonstrated by application to a dust storm from 17 to 24 March 2010 over East Asia. The aerosol analyses initialized Weather Research and Forecasting/Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model forecasts. Results indicate that assimilating MODIS AOD substantially improves aerosol analyses and subsequent forecasts when compared to MODIS AOD, independent AOD observations from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) instrument, and surface PM10 (particulate matter with diameters less than 10 mu m) observations. The newly developed AOD data assimilation system can serve as a tool to improve simulations of dust storms and general air quality analyses and forecasts.
Deriving Surface Reflectance from Visible/Near Infrared and Ultraviolet Satellite Observations Through the Community Radiative Transfer Model

Abstract:Earth's surface reflectance is an important parameter affecting ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) radiance calculations at the top of the atmosphere because many UV and VIS channels can acquire information about the surface and atmosphere. This article provides the theoretical basis for deriving the surface reflectance from satellite-measured UV and VIS observations at window and lower sounding channels with the help of the community radiative transfer model (CRTM) and collocated atmospheric profiles such as ozone, water vapor, and aerosols. Cirrus cloud may be included in the calculation as long as the observations contain enough reflected radiation from the surface. An explicit equation with three scalar parameters $\alpha $, $\beta $, and $\delta $ is obtained for users to calculate Lambertian surface reflectance from the observation. The expressions for the three parameters are somewhat complicated and computationally expansive. We found a simple and smart way that can exactly calculate the three parameters with quasi-linear functions. Numerical experiments using the CRTM simulations have demonstrated the algorithm accuracy for the surface reflectance retrieval better than 2.0E-14. As a case study, measured surface reflectance and the derived surface reflectance over desert from satellite UV measurements are compared. The derived surface reflectance from Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) observations and the VIIRS reflectance product are compared as well. In addition, this methodology can also be used to calculate microwave and infrared surface emissivity with scatterings and solar radiation by adding the surface Planck radiance at the surface temperature.

Abstract:To validate the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) developed by the U.S. Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), the discrete ordinate radiative transfer (DISORT) model and the line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM) are combined in order to provide a reference benchmark. Compared with the benchmark, the CRTM appears quite accurate for both clear sky and ice cloud radiance simulations with RMS errors below 0.2K, except for clouds with small ice particles. In a computer CPU run time comparison, the CRTM is faster than DISORT by approximately two orders of magnitude. Using the operational MODIS cloud products and the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) atmospheric profiles as an input, the CRTM is employed to simulate the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) radiances. The CRTM simulations are shown to be in reasonably close agreement with the AIRS measurements (the discrepancies are within 2K in terms of brightness temperature difference). Furthermore, the impact of uncertainties in the input cloud properties and atmospheric profiles on the CRTM simulations has been assessed. The CRTM-based brightness temperatures (BTs) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), for both thin (τ<5) and thick (τ>30) clouds, are highly sensitive to uncertainties in atmospheric temperature and cloud top pressure. However, for an optically thick cloud, the CRTM-based BTs are not sensitive to the uncertainties of cloud optical thickness, effective particle size, and atmospheric humidity profiles. On the contrary, the uncertainties of the CRTM-based TOA BTs resulting from effective particle size and optical thickness are not negligible in an optically thin cloud.

Abstract:Guided by radiative transfer modeling of the effects of dust (aerosol) on satellite thermal infrared radiance by many different imaging radiometers, in this article, we present the aerosol-effected satellite radiative signal changes in the top of atmosphere (TOA). The simulation of TOA radiance for Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) is performed by using the RTTOV fast radiative transfer model. The model computation is carried out with setting representative geographical atmospheric models and typical default aerosol climatological models under clear sky condition. The radiative differences (in units of equivalent black body brightness temperature differences (BTDs)) between simulated radiances without consideration of the impact of aerosol (Aerosol-free) and with various aerosol models (Aerosol-modified) are calculated for the whole IASI spectrum between 3.62 and 15.5μm. The comparisons of BTDs are performed through 11 aerosol models in 5 classified atmospheric models. The results show that the Desert aerosol model has the most significant impact on IASI spectral simulated radiances than the other aerosol models (Continental, Urban, Maritime types and so on) in Mid-latitude Summer, contributing to the mineral aerosol components contained. The value of BTDs could reach up to 1K at peak points. The atmospheric window spectral region between 900 and 1100cm−1 (9.09–11.11μm) is concentrated after the investigation for the largest values of aerosol-affected radiance differences. BTDs in IASI spectral region between 645 and 1200cm−1 occupies the largest oscillation and the major part of the whole spectrum. The IASI highest window peak-points channels (such as 9.4 and 10.2μm) are obtained finally, which are the most sensitive ones to the simulated IASI radiance.
Evaluation of Cloud and Precipitation Response to Aerosols in WRF-Chem with Satellite Observations

Abstract:Large uncertainties remain in the key physical processes associated with aerosol-cloud interactions (ACI) in models. With the help of A-Train satellite observations, the Weather Research and Forecasting Model with chemistry (WRF-Chem) model with two microphysical schemes, Morrison (MOR) and Lin (LIN), is evaluated by quantifying the susceptibilities of cloud properties, precipitation characteristics, and warm rain process to aerosols for marine stratocumulus over the Southeast Pacific. We reduced the meteorological control on clouds by stratifying them using cloud geometric thickness. Our results show that while the cloud fraction increases with increasing cloud droplet number concentration (N-d) in observation and simulations, the susceptibility of cloud fraction to N(d)in simulations are only half of that in the observation. The cloud liquid water path increases with N(d)in simulations but decreases slightly in the observation. Compared with the observations, the warm rain in WRF-Chem simulations is generally less suppressed by aerosols, and it initiates at a much smaller cloud droplet effective radius (R-e). The conversion from cloud to rain is substantially faster in simulations compared to satellite observations. The conversion rate accelerates at R-e approximate to 13 mu m in observations and at R-e approximate to 9 mu m in simulations.

Abstract:Aerosols exert a significant influence on the brightness temperature observed in the thermal infrared (IR) channels, yet the specific contributions of various aerosol types remain underexplored. This study integrated the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) atmospheric composition reanalysis data into the Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) model to quantify the aerosol effects on brightness temperature (BT) simulations for the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) aboard the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. Two distinct experiments were conducted: the aerosol-aware experiment (AER), which accounted for aerosol radiative effects, and the control experiment (CTL), in which aerosol radiative effects were omitted. The CTL experiment results reveal uniform negative bias (observation minus background (O-B)) across all six IR channels of the AHI, with a maximum deviation of approximately −1 K. Conversely, the AER experiment showed a pronounced reduction in innovation, which was especially notable in the 10.4 μm channel, where the bias decreased by 0.7 K. The study evaluated the radiative effects of eleven aerosol species, all of which demonstrated cooling effects in the AHI's six IR channels, with dust aerosols contributing the most significantly (approximately 86%). In scenarios dominated by dust, incorporating the radiative effect of dust aerosols could correct the brightness temperature bias by up to 2 K, underscoring the substantial enhancement in the BT simulation for the 10.4 μm channel during dust events. Jacobians were calculated to further examine the RTTOV simulations' sensitivity to aerosol presence. A clear temporal and spatial correlation between the dust concentration and BT simulation bias corroborated the critical role of the infrared channel data assimilation on geostationary satellites in capturing small-scale, rapidly developing pollution processes.

Abstract:To assimilate satellite-based passive microwave observation over heavy clouds and precipitation into numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems and thus to improve the performance of it has become an intensely studied topic. These attempts rely on the development. of a radiative transfer (RT) model that accounts for particle scattering and accurately simulates the observation process at an acceptable computational speed. In this paper, two existing RT models (the RTTOV and the DOTLRT) are tested and the accuracies are evaluated by comparing the simulated brightness temperature with real observational data of a satellite-based sounder ATMS. RTTOV is much more well-known and widely applied, however, since these two models use different solvers to deal with the scattering effect, whether it is possible to improve the performance of RT model is still open to discussion.
Representing Precipitation Ice Species with Both Spherical and Nonspherical Particles for Radiative Transfer Modeling of Microphysics‐Consistent Cloud Microwave Scattering Properties

Abstract:Cloud microwave scattering properties for the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) have previously been created to be consistent with the particle size distributions specified by the WSM6 single-moment microphysics scheme. Here substitution of soft sphere scattering properties with nonspherical particle scattering properties is explored in studies of Hurricane Karl (2010). A nonsphere replaces a sphere of the same maximum dimension, and the number of particles of a given size is scaled by the ratio of the sphere to nonsphere mass to keep the total mass of a given particle size unchanged. The replacement of homogeneous soft sphere snow particles is necessary to resolve a highly evident issue in CRTM simulations: precipitation-affected brightness temperatures are generally warmer at 183 GHz than at 91.7 GHz, whereas the reverse is seen in observations. Using sector snowflakes resolve this issue better than using columns/plates, bullet rosettes, or dendrites. With sector snowflakes, both of these high frequencies have low simulated brightness temperatures compared to observations, providing a clear and consistent suggestion that snow is being overproduced in the examined simulation using WSM6 microphysics. Graupel causes cold biases at lower frequencies which can be reduced by either reducing graupel water contents or replacing the microphysics-consistent spherical graupel particles with sector snowflakes. However, soft spheres are likely the better physical representation of graupel particles. The hypotheses that snow and graupel are overproduced in simulations using WSM6 microphysics shall be examined more systematically in future studies through additional cases and ensemble data assimilation of all-sky microwave radiance observations.
