Abstract:Solid-state optical refrigeration uses anti-Stokes fluorescence to cool macroscopic objects to cryogenic temperatures without vibrations. Crystals such as Yb3+-doped YLiF4 (YLF:Yb) have previously been laser-cooled to 91 K. In this study, we show for the first time laser cooling of a payload connected to a cooling crystal. A YLF:Yb crystal was placed inside a Herriott cell and pumped with a 1020-nm laser (47 W) to cool a HgCdTe sensor that is part of a working Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer to 135 K. This first demonstration of an all-solid-state optical cryocooler was enabled by careful control of the various desired and undesired heat flows. Fluorescence heating of the payload was minimized by using a single-kink YLF thermal link between the YLF:Yb cooling crystal and the copper coldfinger that held the HgCdTe sensor. The adhesive-free bond between YLF and YLF:Yb showed excellent thermal reliability. This laser-cooled assembly was then supported by silica aerogel cylinders inside a vacuum clamshell to minimize undesired conductive and radiative heat loads from the warm surroundings. Our structure can serve as a baseline for future optical cryocooler devices.

Abstract:Optical refrigeration of solids with anti-Stokes fluorescence has been widely explored as a vibration-free cryogenic cooling technology. A minimum temperature of 87 K has been demonstrated with rare-earth ion doped crystals using optical refrigeration. However, the depletion of the upper-lying energy levels in the ground state manifold hinders further cooling to below liquid nitrogen (LN$_2$) temperatures, confining its applications. In this work, we introduce a Purcell enhanced optical refrigeration method to circumvent this limitation. This approach enhances the emission of high energy photons by coupling to a nearby nanocavity, blue shifting the mean emission wavelength. Such Purcell enhanced emission facilitates cooling starting from a lower energy level in the ground state manifold, which exhibits a higher occupation below LN$_2$ temperatures. Using our experimentally measured optical coefficients, our theoretical analysis predicts a minimum achievable temperature of 38 K for a Yb$^{3+}$:YLiF$_{4}$ nanocrystal near a cavity under realistic conditions. The proposed method is applicable to other rare-earth ion doped materials and semiconductors, and will have applications in creating superconducting and other quantum devices with solid-state cooling.

Laser cooling in Yb:KY3F10: a comparison with Yb:YLF

Abstract:Laser cooling by anti-Stokes fluorescence is a technology to realize all-solid-state optical cryocoolers. We grew Yb3+-doped KY3F10 (Yb:KYF) crystals as novel laser cooling media and compare their cooling performance to Yb3+-doped LiYF4 (Yb:YLF) crystals also grown in our institute. We present temperature-dependent absorption and emission cross sections as well as the fluorescence lifetime of Yb:KYF, and calculate its material figure-of-merit for laser cooling. Yb:KYF exhibits a higher figure-of-merit than Yb:YLF at temperatures below 200 K. This is because, in contrast to Yb:YLF, the excitation transition from the second-highest Stark level of the ground state is best-suited for cryogenic cooling in Yb:KYF. Thus, it has the potential to achieve unprecedentedly low temperatures below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. In this work, we observe the first laser cooling of Yb:KYF, and obtain a background absorption coefficient of ∼10-4 cm-1, which is among the lowest ever reported for Yb3+-doped fluoride crystals. A simple model calculation predicts that our Yb:KYF and Yb:YLF crystals can potentially be cooled down to ≈100 K in a high-power cooling setup. Our Yb:KYF crystals still leave room for further improvement through the optimization of the growth process and the use of purer raw materials.

Abstract:Gallium garnet crystals, with the chemical formula RE 3 Ga 5 O 12 (REGG) where $\text{RE}=\text{Gd}$ , Y or Lu [1], are desirable host materials for trivalent rare-earth active ions such as Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , etc., owing to their superior chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Nowadays, Yb-doped REGG has emerged as the most widely popular host crystal, particularly for the manufacturing of high-power and high-energy solid-state lasers. In comparison with GGG or YGG, LuGG crystal seems to be more adequate as a host medium for Yb ion, due to the closer proximity of Lu and Yb elements in both ionic radius and atomic mass. Consequently, more attention deserves to be devoted to the Yb: LuGG crystal.

Abstract:Laser cooling in solids is based on anti-Stokes luminescence, via the annihilation of lattice phonons needed to compensate the energy of emitted photons, higher than absorbed ones. Usually the anti-Stokes process is obtained using a rare-earth active ion, like Yb. In this work we demonstrate a novel approach for optical cooling based not only to Yb anti-Stokes cycle but also to virtuous energy-transfer processes from the active ion, obtaining an increase of the cooling efficiency of a single crystal LiYF(4) (YLF) doped Yb at 5at.% with a controlled co-doping of 0.0016% Thulium ions. A model for efficiency enhancement based on Yb-Tm energy transfer is also suggested.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration of solid-state optical refrigeration of a Ho-doped material. A 1 mol% Ho-doped Yttrium Lithium Fluoride (YLF) crystal is cooled by mid-IR laser radiation, and its external quantum efficiency and parasitic background absorption are evaluated. Using detailed temperature-dependent spectroscopic analysis the minimum achievable temperature of a 1% Ho:YLF sample is estimated. Owing to its narrower ground- and excited-state manifolds, larger absorption cross-section, and coincidence of optimum cooling wavelength of 2070 nm with commercially available high-power and highly efficient Tm-fiber lasers, Ho^3+-doped crystals are superior to Tm^3+-doped systems for mid-IR optical refrigeration. With further improvement in material purity and increased doping concentration, they offer great potential towards enhancing the cooling efficiency nearly two-fold over the best current Yb:YLF systems, achieving lower temperatures as well as for realization of eye-safe mid-IR high-power radiation balanced lasers.

Abstract:Yb3+-doped transparent glass ceramics containing cubic SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by heat treating the precursor fluorosilicate glass. The precipitated crystals increase in size and the crystallinity decreases with increasing Yb3+ doping level. With high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, the nano-sized nature of SrF2 was clearly observed. Owing to a significant change in the crystal-field effects with Yb3+ enriching in the SrF2 phase, the glass ceramics present near infrared emission with large bandwidths and long lifetimes, simultaneously. This indicates the glass ceramics have potential application in the efficient IR lasers pumping by InGaAs diodes. The glass ceramics can also emit blue upconversion luminescence, deriving from Yb3+ pairs' cooperative luminescence. It suggested that Yb3+ can be an efficient upconversion sensitizer for other rare earth ions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report on the continuous-wave and passively Q-switched operation of a compositionally “mixed” heavily doped 16.6 at.% Yb:(Y,Lu) 3 Al 5 O 12 garnet crystal at cryogenic temperatures (100–200 K), pumped by a volume Bragg grating stabilized diode laser emitting at 969 nm. At 140 K, in the continuous-wave regime, a maximum output power of 10.65 W was achieved at ~ 1029 nm with a slope efficiency of 56% (versus the incident pump power), a laser threshold of 1.05 W and excellent beam quality. Using Cr 4+ :YAG as a saturable absorber, the passively Q-switched laser generated pulses with an energy/duration of 0.15 mJ/201 ns, respectively, at a repetition rate of 39.7 kHz, corresponding to a peak power of 0.39 kW.

Abstract:Advances in cryogenic sciences have enabled several observations of new low-temperature physical phenomena including superconductivity, superfluidity, and Bose-Einstein condensates. Heat transfer is also critical in numerous applications including thermal management within integrated microelectronics and the regulation of plant-growth and development. Here we demonstrate that single-beam laser-trapping can be used to induce and quantify the local refrigeration of aqueous media through analysis of the cold Brownian dynamics of individual Yb3+-doped yttrium lithium fluoride (YLF) crystals in an inhomogeneous temperature field via forward light scattering and back-focal-plane interferometry. A tunable, NIR continuous-wave laser is used to optically trap individual YLF crystals with an irradiance on the order of 1 MW/cm2. Heat is transported out of the crystal lattice (across the solid / liquid interface) by anti-Stokes photoluminescence following upconversion of Yb3+ excited states mediated by optical-phonon absorption. The cold Brownian motion (CBM) analysis of individual YLF crystals indicates local cooling by >21 C below ambient conditions suggesting a range of potential future applications.

Abstract:A modified all-solid-state optical cryocooler prototype based on anti-Stokes fluorescence in a 10%-doped Yb:YLF crystal cooled a payload to temperatures below 125 K starting from room temperature. To achieve this record performance, the optical refrigerator employed a novel, to the best of our knowledge, textured-MgF2 thermal link to improve the thermal transport and fluorescence escape. Additionally, it used spectrally selective, high-reflection coatings in the pump circulator cavity to suppress parasitic lasing and amplified spontaneous emission.

Abstract:30mol% Ho:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYF) and 30mol% Ho, 20mol% Lu:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYLF) crystals with monoclinic phase were prepared by the Bridgman technique. After introducing Lu3+ ions, the thermal property of Ho:BYLF crystal was improved without significantly shortening the I-5(5) level lifetime of Ho3+ ion compared with Ho:BYF crystal. Under laser diode pumping at 889 nm, the emission peaks of both Ho:BYF and Ho:BYLF crystals in the range of 3-5 mu m could be detected. The spectral parameters of the crystal are calculated in detail, and the cross sections of absorption, emission and gain are given. During laser pumping, the two crystals showed low pumping threshold, and Ho:BYF crystal obtained a maximum energy output of 5.22 mJ, while Ho:BYLF crystal tended to be saturated at 1 mJ due to the high concentration of Lu3+ ion. These two crystals show great application potential for laser operating in the mid-infrared range.

However, the use of thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) for temperature measurement has strict requirements for energy difference, which limits the sensitivity of detection. In order to satisfy higher sensitivity sensing, the pair of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs) of 4S3/2 and 3H4 has been innovatively designed. Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Abstract:Laser cooling of solids, also known as optical refrigeration, is based on anti-Stokes fluorescence upconversion where low-entropy laser light with photon energy less than mean fluorescence energy is absorbed followed by highly efficient fluorescence that carries heat and entropy away from the material [1],[2]. Much progress has been made recently by laser cooling high-purity Yb:YLF crystals to cryogenic temperatures (~90K) [3],[4]. More recently, Ho and Tm-doped crystals have also been cooled with cryogenic prospects [5]. On the applications front, optical refrigeration has been touted as the only promising technology for realizing an all-solid-state and vibration-free cryocooler. It was also shown that the cooling process when combined with stimulated emission can lead to radiation-balanced lasers (RBL) that are free from thermal instabilities and beam distortion [6]. We report on the most recent advances in this field which includes the realization of the first optical cryocooler prototype, and the progress towards its application in ultra-stable lasers for precision metrology. Furthermore, the feasibility of high-power "athermal" radiation-balanced lasers in disks, rods and fibers are discussed.
Growth, Structure, and Spectroscopic Properties of a Cr3+, Tm3+, Ho3+, and Pr3+co-doped LuYAG Single Crystal for 2.9 Μm Laser

Abstract:A new laser crystal from Lu2.4Y0.6Al5O12 (LuYAG) co-doped with Cr3+, Tm3+, Ho3+, and Pr3+ ions was grown successfully by the Czochralski method for the first time. The structure parameters of the Cr, Tm, Ho, Pr: LuYAG crystal are determined by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The main absorption bands are observed near 426 and 782 nm, and the fluorescence spectrum excited by a 450 nm or 783 nm LD presents an emission band near 2.911 mu m, indicating that the co-doped Cr3+ and Tm3+ ions can be utilized as sensitizers for the Ho3+ ions. The lifetimes of the I-5(6) and I-5(7) levels of the Ho3+ ions were measured and fitted to be 0.070 ms and 1.852 ms, respectively. The energy transfer efficiencies of the processes 5I6 (Ho3+) -> F-3(3,4) (Pr3+) and I-5(7) (Ho3+) -> F-3(2) (Pr3+) + H-3(6) (Pr3+) were calculated, showing that the Pr3+ ions can play the role of a deactivator for the Ho3+ ions. Furthermore, the energy transfer mechanisms among the Cr3+, Tm3+, Ho3+, and Pr3+ ions were studied. The results suggest that the Cr, Tm, Ho, Pr: LuYAG crystal is a new promising laser medium operating at around 2.9 mu m under flash lamp or 783 nm LD pumping.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a high power cryogenic cooling Tm(6 at.-%),Ho(0.5 at.-%):YLF laser end-pumped by a 19-fiber-coupled-diodes module with the central wavelength of 792 nm at 20 deg.. The highest continuous-wave power of 3.6 W at 2.051 ?m is attained under pumping power of 13.6 W, corresponding to optical-optical conversion efficiency of 26%, and the slope efficiency is larger than 30%. The threshold power is only about 0.16 W because of the long lifetime, large effective emission cross section, and low re-absorption in Tm,Ho:YLF crystal.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a high power of cryogenic cooling Tm(8 at %), Ho(1.4 at %):YLF dual end pumped by two fiber coupled laser diodes at 792nm. Each pumping laser head delivers 15W power in an inner fiber core area of 0.4mm and numerical number of 0.3. The highest continuous-wave (cw) power of 10.2W at 2.051μm is attained under pumping power of 30W, corresponding to optical-optical conversion efficiency of 33%, and the slope efficiency is greater than 36%.
