Abstract:Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based cooperative opportunistic multicast scheme uses the efficient relay selection range (ERSR) with a fixed radius to select user relay (UR). This results in UR redundancy, especially in the cell centre with high density of candidate UR. Coverage efficiency, defined as the ratio of the number of successful users to that of URs, is low. Aiming at this problem, a range division user relay selection scheme (termed as RDUR) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, it divides the circular coverage range of base station into several continuous annular areas (AAs). Secondly, different AAs are allocated different ERSRs (i.e., the radius of ERSR is different), which decides the width of AA. Lastly, the ERSR set that optimizes system coverage efficiency is used to perform UR selection. From simulation results, through RDUR, coverage efficiency increases by at least 28%, even though capacity efficiency decreases by 6%.

Abstract:Recently, optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing technology has attracted intensive research interest because spectrum-sliced elastic optical networks (EONs) can be constructed based on it. In this paper, we investigate how to serve multicast requests over EONs with multicast-capable routing, modulation level, and spectrum assignment (RMSA). Both EON planning with static multicast traffic and EON provisioning with dynamic traffic are studied. For static EON planning, we formulate two integer linear programming (ILP) models, i.e., the joint ILP and the separate ILP. The joint ILP optimizes all multicast requests together, while the separate ILP optimizes one request each time in a sequential way. We also propose a highly efficient heuristic that is based on an adaptive genetic algorithm (GA) with minimum solution revisits. The simulation results indicate that the ILPs and the GA provide more efficient EON planning than the existing multicast-capable RMSA algorithms that use the shortest path tree (SPT) and the minimal spanning tree (MST). The results also show that the GA obtains more efficient EON planning results than the separate ILP with much less running time, as it can optimize all multicast requests together in a highly efficient manner. For the dynamic EON provisioning, we demonstrate that the GA is also applicable, and it achieves lower request blocking probabilities than the benchmark algorithms using SPTand MST.

Abstract:Elastic optical networks (EON) based on optical superchannel enables higher spectral flexibility, in which the network nodes should provide multiple all-optical functionalities to manipulate bandwidth-variable data traffic. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an EON node structure supporting reconfigurable optical superchannel multicasting. The node structure incorporates a shared multicasting module, which performs reconfigurable selection of target incoming/outgoing superchannels/replicas and leverages a group of nonlinear devices to satisfy multiple multicast requests. Moreover, an optical comb is utilized to efficiently provide and manage all pump resources for multicasting with potential cost reduction and phase noise inhibition. Based on the node structure, we experimentally demonstrate polarization division multiplexing (PDM) superchannel multicasting scenarios with different replica amount, input/output locations, and modulation formats. Less than 0.7 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalties are demonstrated in multiple multicasting scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, we leverage the Set-Cover problem to design the multicast-capable routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (MC-RMSA) algorithms that utilizes network coding (NC) to achieve efficient service provisioning in flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs). We use a realistic network model that considers the physical impairments from both transmission and light-splitting, and propose to serve each multicast request with a light-forest that includes one or more light-graphs(1) to improve spectrum efficiency. For each multicast request, the proposed algorithms firstly use a Set-Cover approach to select the destination subsets to cover all the destinations. Then, for each subset, we calculate the light-graph to cover all the destination in it. The proposed algorithms are evaluated with extensive simulations for dynamic service provisioning, and the simulation results indicate that they can achieve better performance on blocking probability than existing MC-RMSA algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the multicast-capable routing, modulation, and spectrum assignment (MC-RMSA) schemes that consider the physical impairments from both the transmission and light splitting in elastic optical networks (EONs). Specifically, we propose to provision each multicast request with a light forest, which consists of one or more light trees to avoid the dilemma that because of the accumulated physical impairments, a relatively large light tree may have to use the lowest modulation level, and, hence, consume too many frequency slots (FS'). In order to further improve the spectral efficiency and compensate for the differential delays among the light trees, we incorporate the rateless network coding (R-NC) in the multicast system. We first formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) model to solve the problem for static network planning. Then, we propose three time-efficient heuristics that leverage the set-cover problem and utilize layered auxiliary graphs. The simulation results indicate that in both the ILP and heuristics, the MC-RMSA with R-NC can achieve better performance on the maximum index of used FS' than that without. After that we evaluate the heuristics in a dynamic network provisioning. The results show that the MC-RMSA with R-NC can effectively improve the performance of all-optical multicast in EONs to reduce the blocking probability.

Abstract:It is known that multicast provisioning is important for supporting cloud-based applications, and as the traffics from these applications are increasing quickly, we may rely on optical networks to realize high-throughput multicast. Meanwhile, the flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) achieve agile access to the massive bandwidth in optical fibers, and hence can provision variable bandwidths to adapt to the dynamic demands from the cloud-based applications. In this paper, we consider all-optical multicast in EONs in a practical manner and focus on designing impairment-and splitting-aware multicast provisioning schemes. We first study the procedure of adaptive modulation selection for a light-tree, and point out that the multicast scheme in EONs is fundamentally different from that in the fixed-grid wavelength-division multiplexing networks. Then, we formulate the problem of impairment-and splitting-aware routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (ISa-RMSA) for all-optical multicast in EONs and analyze its hardness. Next, we analyze the advantages brought by the flexibility of routing structures and discuss the ISa-RMSA schemes based on light-trees and light-forests. This paper suggests that for ISa-RMSA, the light-forest-based approach can use less bandwidth than the light-tree-based one, while still satisfying the quality of transmission requirement. Therefore, we establish the minimum light-forest problem for optimizing a light-forest in ISa-RMSA. Finally, we design several time-efficient ISa-RMSA algorithms, and prove that one of them can solve the minimum light-forest problem with a fixed approximation ratio.

Abstract:Cooperative multicast has been demonstrated to achieve significant performance gain over the classic source-destination transmission paradigm by exploiting spatial diversity through the participation of multiple relay nodes. As a major technical challenge, the selection of relays for a multicast session has significant impact on the multicast performance. The challenge is even more pronounced when the number of channels is limited as the relay selection is in this context coupled with channel allocation. The goal of this paper is to design a fair multicast relay selection scheme with limited channel resources. Specifically, we establish an analytical framework for this joint relay selection and channel allocation problem and develop a lexicographic max-min multicast relay selection scheme. Our design consists of two technical steps. First, we consider the maximization of the minimal data rate. By decoupling relay selection and channel allocation, the problem is transformed to a max-min-max problem, which is difficult to solve. To make this problem tractable, we reformulate it as a convex optimization problem via relaxation and smoothing, and prove the asymptotic equivalence from a geometrical perspective. Second, we propose an adjustment algorithm based on the initial max-min solution, and prove that the proposed scheme achieves lexicographic optimality. Finally, our proposed algorithm is evaluated by simulation to show its superiority over the conventional schemes.

Abstract:A cost-effective spectrum sharing architecture is proposed to enable the legacy noncognitive secondary system to coexist with the primary system. Specifically, we suggest to install a few intermediate nodes, namely, the cognitive relays, to conduct the spectrum sensing and coordinate the spectrum access. To achieve the goal of win-win between primary and secondary systems, the cognitive relay may act as a cooperator for both of them, and an Opportunistic Cognitive Relaying (OCR) scheme is specially devised. In this scheme, the cognitive relay opportunistically switches among three different working modes, that is, Relay for Primary Link (RPL), Relay for Secondary Link (RSL), or Relay for Neither of the Links (RNL), respectively, based on the channel-dependent observation of both systems. In addition, the transmit power for cognitive relay and secondary transmitter in each mode are optimally determined by maximizing the transmission rate of secondary system while keeping or even reducing the outage probability of primary system. Simulation results validate the efficiency of the proposed spectrum sharing scheme.

Abstract:Optical multicasting based inverse multiplexing (IM) is introduced in spectrum allocation of elastic optical network to resolve the spectrum fragmentation problem, where superchannels could be split and fit into several discrete spectrum blocks in the intermediate node. We experimentally demonstrate it with a 1-to-7 optical superchannel multicasting module and selecting/coupling components. Also, simulation results show that, comparing with several emerging spectrum defragmentation solutions (e.g., spectrum conversion, split spectrum), IM could reduce blocking performance significantly but without adding too much system complexity as split spectrum. On the other hand, service fairness for traffic with different granularity of these schemes is investigated for the first time and it shows that IM performs better than spectrum conversion and almost as well as split spectrum, especially for smaller size traffic under light traffic intensity.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cloud computing, optical inter-datacenter (inter-DC) networks have attracted intensive research attentions. Meanwhile, recent advances on the flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) have demonstrated agile spectrum management in the optical layer. Therefore, we expect EONs to become a promising underlying infrastructure for optical inter-DC networks. In this paper, we investigate offline and online routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) problems for anycast requests in elastic optical inter-DC networks. For the offline problem, we formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) model and propose several heuristics based on single-DC destination selection. The optimal solutions for small-scale problems are obtained by solving the ILP, and we compare them with those from the heuristics for measuring the optimization gaps. For the online problem, we design several heuristics to consider the computing and bandwidth resources jointly for efficient service provisioning, including an algorithm that uses multi-DC destination selection. Our simulation results demonstrate that the anycast algorithm with multi-DC destination selection can fully utilize the bandwidth resources in the elastic optical inter-DC network, make computing resources become the bottleneck, and reduce the bandwidth blocking probability of anycast requests effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to facilitate efficient bulk-data transfer in elastic optical networks (EONs) with malleable reservation (MR). The MR scheme performs adjustable routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) for the data-oriented requests that each has certain amount of data to transfer in an EON, where there also exist flow-oriented requests that each requires a fixed bandwidth. We enable RSA reconfigurations for each data-oriented request served by MR, to effectively recycle the 2-D spectrum fragments (i.e, fragments existing in the time and spectrum domains with a correlated manner) generated by the flow-oriented requests. We first formulate a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the MR problem to maximize the percentage of transmitted data using a limited number of RSA reconfigurations. Then, in order to reduce the time complexity, we propose a dynamic programming method (DPM) that can provide the exact solution to the MR problem in polynomial time. Simulation results suggest that compared with the MILP, DPM can provide exact MR solutions for the data-oriented requests with significantly reduced time complexity. The results also verify that without affecting the provisioning of flow-oriented requests, DPM can recycle 2-D spectrum fragments and improve the EON's spectrum utilization effectively.

Abstract:The elastic optical network (EON) is a promising new optical technology that uses spectrum resources much more efficiently than does traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This paper focuses on the routing, modulation level, spectrum and transceiver allocation (RMSTA) problems of the EON. In contrast to previous works that consider only the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) or routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMSA) problems, we additionally consider the transceiver allocation problem. Because transceivers can be used to regenerate signals (by connecting two transceivers back-to-back) along a transmission path, different regeneration sites on a transmission path result in different spectrum and transceiver usage. Thus, the RMSTA problem is both more complex and more challenging than are the RSA and RMSA problems. To address this problem, we first propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model whose objective is to optimize the balance between spectrum usage and transceiver usage by tuning a weighting coefficient to minimize the cost of network operations. Then, we propose a novel virtual network-based heuristic algorithm to solve the problem and present the results of experiments on representative network topologies. The results verify that, compared to previous works, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce both resource consumption and time complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore how much flexible Ethernet (FlexE) and elastic optical network (EON) can mutually benefit each other, given their flexibilities in managing Ethernet channels and optical spectra. Specifically, we consider three FlexE architectures, i.e., FlexE-unaware, FlexE-aware and FlexE-terminal, explain how to integrate them with EON, and formulate an mixed integer linear programming mode (MILP) to optimize the corresponding network design of each integration. The exact solutions provided by the MILP models confirm that FlexE and EON can mutually benefit each other when the FlexE-aware and FlexE-terminal architectures are considered, and the more flexible the FlexE architecture is, the more benefits the integration can get. Meanwhile, the solutions also show that fixed-grid wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks cannot fully explore the advantages of the FlexE architectures due to the rigid transmission scheme. Hence, our results suggest that integrating FlexE and EON would be necessary in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, we incorporate a layered approach to design integrated multicast-capable routing and spectrum assignment (MC-RSA) algorithms for achieving efficient all-optical multicasting in spectrum-sliced elastic optical networks (EONs), which are based on the optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology. For each multicast request, the proposed algorithms decompose the physical topology into several layered auxiliary graphs according to the network spectrum utilization. Then, based on the request's bandwidth requirement, we select a proper layer and calculate a multicast light-tree within it. With these procedures, the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) for each multicast request is done in an integrated way. We evaluate the proposed algorithms in simulations of static network planning and dynamic network provisioning. The simulation results demonstrate that compared to the existing MC-RSA algorithms, our approaches achieve more efficient network planning in terms of spectrum utilization, and provide lower blocking probabilities in network provisioning.
