Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is modified by melamine (MA) via the strong π – π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction. PP composites are prepared by melt compounding method, and GO/functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) is in situ thermally reduced during the processing. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that FGO nanosheets are homogeneously dispersed in polymer matrix with intercalation and exfoliation microstructure. The FGO/PP nanocomposite exhibits higher thermal stability and flame retardant property than those of the GO counterpart. During the thermal decomposition, the intercalated MA is condensed to graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) in the confined micro-zone created by GO nanosheets. This in situ formed g-C 3 N 4 provides a protective layer to graphene and enhances its barrier effect. The heat release rate and the escape of volatile degradation products are reduced in the FGO-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:In this study, a novel flame retardant (PMrG) was developed by self-assembling melamine and phytic acid (PA) onto rGO, and then applying it to the improvement of the flame resistance of PLA. PMrG simultaneously decreases the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total heat release (THR) of the composite during combustion, and enhances the LOI value and the time to ignition (TTI), thus significantly improving the flame retardancy of the composite. The flame retardant mechanism of the PMrG is also investigated. On one hand, the dehydration of PA and the decomposition of melamine in PMrG generate non-flammable volatiles, such as H2O and NH3, which dilute the oxygen concentration around the combustion front of the composite. On the other hand, the rGO, melamine, and PA components in PMrG create a synergistic effect in promoting the formation of a compact char layer during the combustion, which plays a barrier role and effectively suppresses the release of heat and smoke. In addition, the PMrGs in PLA exert a positive effect on the crystallization of the PLA matrix, thus playing the role of nucleation agent.

Abstract:To improve its dispersion and flame retardant efficiency, graphene oxide (GO) is dually modified with polymeric flame retardant and the nanomaterial with catalytic carbonation ability. Via the reactions between oxygen functional groups in GO and PCl groups in hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, phosphazene-based flame retardant is grafted to GO. Due to the strong affinity of Ni2+ with NH2 groups in this phosphazene flame retardant, the decoration of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets on the graphene is facilitated. Transmission electron microscopy images confirm good dispersion and exfoliation state of graphene in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The incorporation of functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) results in the reduction of peak heat release rate, total heat release and smoke release of PP during the combustion. Flame mechanism of FGO is concluded according to the results of thermal decomposition and char analysis. This work provides a novel modification strategy for enhancing the dispersion and flame retardant efficiency of graphene.
Effect of Molybdenum Trioxide-Loaded Graphene and Cuprous Oxide-Loaded Graphene on Flame Retardancy and Smoke Suppression of Polyurethane Elastomer

Abstract:Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3)-loaded graphene (MoO3-GNS) hybrids and cuprous oxide (Cu2O)-loaded graphene (Cu2O-GNS) hybrids were successfully prepared via the hydrothermal method and one-pot coprecipitation method, respectively. Subsequently, the MoO3-GNS and Cu2O-GNS hybrids were incorporated into a polyurethane elastomer (PUE) matrix, respectively, and their effects on thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression properties of PUE were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the incorporation of 2.0 wt MoO3-GNS or Cu2O-GNS hybrids efficiently improved the char yield of the PUE matrix. Moreover, the addition of MoO3-GNS or Cu2O-GNS hybrids presented excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of PUE composites, as evidenced by the obvious reduction in their heat release rate, total heat release, and smoke density. The improvement in the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties were mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the physical barrier effect of graphene sheets and the catalytic charring effect of MoO3 or Cu2O.

Abstract:Poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) is an important heat boosting additive of some engineering materials. In this study, functionalized graphene nanosheets were developed and introduced to composite with PSMA through a simple physical blending method. To promote a homogeneous dispersion of graphene in PSMA, graphite oxide (GO) was functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) before the reduction. The successful functionalization of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Thismodified RGO was introduced into PSMA, and DMA was employed to investigate the mechanical properties. The results showed that the mechanical storage modulus of PSMA was greatly improved, especially at high temperature. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of PSMA/APTS-RGO was also greatly enhanced.

Abstract:<p>A plant derived bio-macromolecule namely lignin (L) and a green phosphorus compound like phytic acid (PA) were functionalized with graphene oxide (GO) and subsequently, used to enhance the flame retardant properties of polyamide 66 (PA66) fabrics in a one pot deposition method. Meanwhile, we also considered pure phytic acid and one more bio-derived charring agent like chitosan (CS) to formulate a series of GO-based flame retardant finishing by altering the applied compounds in the formulation. The applied finishing with a minimum loading % (i.e., less than 10%) rarely altered the physical properties (i.e., color, handle and tensile strength, etc.) of treated textiles while provided enhanced thermal stability and added flame retardancy. Thus, a significant increase in limiting oxygen index (LOI) by 27% was received for the GO-lignin and GO-phytic acid modified fabric sample (i.e., PA66-A), indicating the supremacy of graphene-based compound. Furthermore, a substantial reduction in the peak heat release rate (pHRR) by 25% was also noticed for the fabric sample treated with GO-lignin, chitosan and phytic acid (i.e., PA66-D). Additionally, the as prepared finishing exhibited a considerable level of wash durability as a maximum reduction of pHRR by 17% was retained even after 5 washing cycles.</p>

Fabrication of Graphene/ni–ce Mixed Oxide with Excellent Performance for Reducing Fire Hazard of Polypropylene

Abstract:A hybrid graphene/Ni-Ce mixed oxide (Gs-NiCexOy) was facilely fabricated using a co-precipitation and subsequent calcination route. Ni-Ce mixed oxide nanoparticles with a uniform diameter of 10-15 nm were assembled on the graphene nanosheets, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Subsequently, the Gs-NiCexOy hybrid was applied to reduce the fire hazards of polypropylene (PP). It was found that the thermal stability of PP composite was obviously enhanced upon the incorporation of 2.5 wt% Gs-NiCexOy. Furthermore, the addition of Gs-NiCexOy significantly improved the fire safety of PP composite, as evidenced by the dramaticl reduction of peak heat release rate, total heat release, smoke production rate, total smoke production and CO production rate. The total flammable gaseous products from the PP composite were decreased and residual char was increased with the addition of Gs-NiCexOy. The flame retardant mechanism was attributed to the combined effect of the physical barrier of graphene nanosheets and the high catalytic activity of the Ni-Ce mixed oxide. This work could allow opening the door to a future potent graphene based nanomaterial in the domain of risk.
Anomalous Nano-Barrier Effects of Ultrathin Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets for Improving the Flame Retardance of Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract:Polymer/graphene-analogous nanosheet composites have great potential for improving their physical and mechanical properties during the past few years. Herein, ultrathin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets were simultaneously exfoliated and non-covalently modified by ultrasonication in an aqueous solution of chitosan. The chitosan-modified MoS2 (CS-MoS2) nanosheets were then transferred from the aqueous solution to tetrahydrofuran by a simple solvent-exchange method for the fabrication of epoxy (EP) nanocomposites. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed to display the homogeneous dispersion of CS-MoS2 in an EP matrix. On incorporating 2 wt% CS-MoS2 into an EP matrix, EP nanocomposites exhibited reductions of up to 43.3% and 14.6% in peak heat-release rate and total heat release derived from cone calorimeters compared to those of neat EP, respectively. Moreover, toxic volatiles, such as hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds and CO, that escaped from the flaming EP nanocomposites were decreased compared to that of neat EP, demonstrating the higher smoke safety. Combined with the analyses of char residues and thermal stability of EP nanocomposites, the reduced fire hazards of EP nanocomposites could be attributed to the nano-barrier effects of MoS2, which could effectively inhibit the release of combustible gas to support burning and restrain the effusion of volatile toxic substances that cause the majority of deaths in fires.

Abstract:A novel graphene conjugated covalent organic framework (AGO@COF) nanohybrid was synthesized by solvothermal method and used to enhance the flame retardancy and mechanical performances of epoxy resins (EP) through synergistic effect firstly. It is deduced from thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimeter results that the obtained AGO@COF nanohybrid improves the flame retardancy of EP significantly. The time to peak heat release rate of EP increases by 17 s, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of EP decrease by 43.6 and 24.3% due to incorporation of 2 wt% AGO@COF. It is referred from thermogravimetric analysis-fourier transform infrared spectrometry results that the release of toxic gases and combustible volatiles during pyrolysis is also suppressed. As for mechanical performance of EP nanocomposites, the storage modulus of EP/2 wt% AGO@COF (34.66 GPa) in the glassy state increases by 23.8% compared with the neat epoxy (28.00 GPa). The possible mechanism for enhanced flame retardant and mechanical performances is proposed according to the test results. This work has opened up a new application for AGO@COF nanohybrid in the field of flame-retardant polymers.

Abstract:By means of direct nucleation and growth on the surface of graphene and element doping of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nano-particles, manganese-cobalt oxide/graphene hybrids (MnCo2O4-GNS) were synthesized to reduce fire hazards of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). The structure, elemental composition and morphology of the obtained hybrids were surveyed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis was applied to simulate and study the influence of MnCo2O4-GNS hybrids on thermal degradation of PBT during combustion. The fire hazards of PBT and its composites were assessed by the cone calorimeter. The cone test results had showed that peak HRR and SPR values of MnCo2O4-GNS/PBT composites were lower than that of pure PBT and Co3O4-GNS/PBT composites. Furthermore, the incorporation of MnCo2O4-GNS hybrids gave rise to apparent decrease of pyrolysis products containing aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, attributed to combined impact of physical barrier for graphene and cat O-4 for organic volatiles and carbon monoxide. Heterolayered Boron Nitride/Polyaniline/Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets for Flame-Retardant Epoxy Resins

Abstract:The heterolayered architecture design is capable of assembling different nanomaterials into a multifunctional nanohybrid. Herein, based on an electrostatic-driven self-assembly process, polyaniline-modified boron nitride (BN/PANI) nanosheets are fixated onto the surface of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets, thus forming a multifunctional heterolayered architecture nanohybrid. Based on the barrier effect of BN nanosheets and the Lewis acid catalysis effect and the chain rearrangement effect of MoS2, the prepared BN/PANI/MoS2 presents a desirable enhancement effect in the flame retardancy and toxic smoke suppression of epoxy resins. Meanwhile, in a high-temperature environment, the charge carrier produced by MoS2 nanosheets is rapidly transferred by electric BN/PANI, thus accelerating the formation of a protective char layer. It was found that 5.0 wt % addition of BN/PANI/MoS2, respectively, leads to decreases of 23.7, 9.1, 11.1, and 29.9% to the peak heat release rate, total heat release, peak smoke release rate, and total smoke release. The Effect of Metal Oxide Decorated Graphene Hybrids on the Improved Thermal Stability and the Reduced Smoke Toxicity in Epoxy Resins

Abstract:Metal oxide decorated graphene hybrid materials, Co3O4–graphene and SnO2–graphene, were synthesized for improving the thermal stability and suppressing the smoke in combustion for epoxy resins. Incorporation of metal oxide/graphene hybrids leads to significant thermal stabilization: a 37 and 27°C increment in the temperature of 5% mass loss is observed for SnO2–graphene/EP and Co3O4–graphene/EP, respectively, compared to that of pure EP. The barrier effect of graphene and the restricted mobility of the polymer chains by metal oxide are believed to be the crucial factor for improving the thermal stability. TG-FTIR analysis shows that the amount of organic volatiles of EP is significantly reduced and the toxic CO is suppressed after incorporating SnO2–graphene or Co3O4–graphene, impling the reduced fire hazards. The synergism between the catalysis effect of metal oxide and the adsorption effect of graphene is the possible mechanism for the smoke suppression.

Abstract:The suppression effect of graphene in the fire hazards and smoke toxicity of polymer composites has been seriously limited by both mass production and weak interfacial interaction. Though the electrochemical preparation provides an available approach for mass production, exfoliated graphene could not strongly bond with polar polymer chains. Herein, mussel-inspired functionalization of electrochemically exfoliated graphene was successfully processed and added into polar thermoplastic polyurethane matrix (TPU). As confirmed by SEM patterns of fracture surface, functionalized graphene possessing abundant hydroxyl could constitute a forceful chains interaction with TPU. By the incorporation of 2.0 wt % f-GNS, peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), specific extinction area (SEA), as well as smoke produce rate (SPR) of TPU composites were approximately decreased by 59.4%, 27.1%, 31.9%, and 26.7%, respectively. A probable mechanism of fire retardant was hypothesized: well-dispersed f-GNS constituted tortuous path and hindered the exchange process of degradation product with barrier function. Large quantities of degradation product gathered round f-GNS and reacted with flame retardant to produce the cross-linked and high-degree graphited residual char. The simple functionalization for electrochemically exfoliated graphene impels the application of graphene in the fields of flame retardant composites.
CuO/Graphene Nanohybrids: Preparation and Enhancement on Thermal Stability and Smoke Suppression of Polypropylene

Abstract:Cu/graphene nanohybrids were successfully prepared using a simultaneous chemical reduction method. Successful oxidation of Cu nanoparticles was carried out by the melt blending during preparation of the nanocomposites. Cu nanoparticles were well dispersed on graphene with a diameter of 3-7 nm. XRD and TGA results revealed successful oxidation of Cu nanoparticles during processing. TEM results indicated that PP nanocomposites decorated with CuO/graphene were better dispersed than those added with graphene because the CuO acted as a spacer to keep graphene layers separated. The thermal property of the PP/G-Cu-1 and PP/G-Cu-2 was efficiently improved by around 30 degrees C compared with native PP. Moreover, the smoke suppression property of PP/graphene, PP/G-Cu-1, and PP/G-Cu-2 nanocomposites were also improved by 28.9%, 35.8%, and 47.2%, respectively. The main reasons for the improvements were due to two factors: the good mass barrier effect of graphene and being easily reduced or the catalytic charring effect of CuO. This work represents a novel and simple process to synthesize CuO/graphene nanohybricis to reduce the fire hazards of polypropylene, indicating further application in research and industrial areas.
Surface Modification of Graphene with Layered Molybdenum Disulfide and Their Synergistic Reinforcement on Reducing Fire Hazards of Epoxy Resins

Abstract:In this work, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-modified graphene (MoS2/GNS) hybrids were prepared by the hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The characterization results show layered molybdenum disulfide was deposited on the surface of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and grahene oxide was reduced simultaneously. Thermogravimetric analysis results of MoS2, GNS and MoS2/GNS hybrids showed that incorporation of MoS2 increased the thermal oxidation resistance of the graphene evidently. Compared to pure epoxy resins (EP), the addition of MoS2/GNS hybrids into EP enhanced the onset thermal degradation temperature (T) with an 53 degrees C increment under air atmosphere and an 18 degrees C increment under nitrogen atmosphere. The addition of MoS2/GNS hybrids endows excellent flame retardant properties to EP, confirmed by the dramatically reduced peak heat release rate value and total heat release value. Moreover, the addition of MoS2/GNS hybrids dramatically decreased the smoke products.

Abstract:Many efforts have been made to enhance the fire safety of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) by reducing the heat release rate and smoke emission. Suppressing the emission of smoke and reducing toxic gases generated in the case of TPU burning play a key role to enable TPU meet the eco-friendly and safety requirements. In this work, poly diaminodiphenyl phosphonic methane (PDMPD) with higher thermal stability and catalytic char formation capacity was synthesized; graphitic carbon nitride/PDMPD (CPDMPD) hybrids were fabricated, and their effect on the thermal behavior and flame retardancy of TPU composites was studied. The peak heat release rate (PHRR), the total heat release, the CO yield, and the smoke release of TPU show an obvious reduction on account of addition of CPDMPD hybrids according to the cone tests. TPU/CPDMPD4 is endowed with a reduction of 49.0% of the PHRR. In this work, molecular designing and physical function are integrated to prepare versatile additives of polymers with optimized thermal stability and flame retardancy.
Improved flame resistance and thermo-mechanical properties of epoxy resin nanocomposites from functionalized graphene oxide via self-assembly in water

Abstract:The development of a green and facile strategy for fabricating ecofriendly, highly effective flame retardants has remain a major challenge. Herein, supermolecular aggregates of piperazine (PiP) and phytic acid (PA) have been self-assembled onto the graphene oxide (GO) surface in water to fabricate functionalized GO (PPGO). The chemical structure and morphology of PPGO are determined by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy along with the energy dispersive spectroscopy. Due to the introduction of organic component onto the surface of graphene oxide, the adhesion between PPGO and the epoxy resin (EP) matrix is enhanced. As a result, the storage modulus (E′) of EP composites is increased in addition to a better dispersion of PPGO. Compared with the pure EP, the flame resistance of EP/PPGO is significantly improved, exhibiting a 42% decrease in peak heat release rate (pHRR), 22% reduction in total heat release (THR). The reduced flammability of EP is attributed to the synergistic effects afforded by the gas dilution effect of piperazine, char-forming promotion effect of phytic acid and the creation of "tortuous path" barrier effect of GO during burning. This work offers a green and facile approach for creating highly effective graphene-based flame retardants.
