Abstract:We adopt a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to examine various new physics models which can generate the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production observed at the Tevatron by the CDF Collaboration. We study the following new physics models: (1) exotic gluon $G^\prime$, (2) extra $Z^\prime$ boson with flavor-conserving interaction, (3) extra $Z^\prime$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$Z^\prime$ interaction, (4) extra $W^\prime$ with flavor-violating $d$-$t$-$W^\prime$ interaction, and (5) extra scalars $S$ and $S^\pm$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$S$ and $d$-$t$-$S^\pm$ interactions. After combining the forward-backward asymmetry with the measurement of the top pair production cross section and the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass distribution at the Tevatron, we find that an axial vector exotic gluon $G^\prime$ of mass about $1 {\rm TeV}$ or $2 {\rm TeV}$ or a $W^\prime$ of mass about $2 {\rm TeV}$ offer an improvement over the Standard Model. The other models considered do not fit the data significantly better than the Standard Model. We also emphasize a few points which have been long ignored in the literature for new physics searches: (1) heavy resonance width effects, (2) renormalization scale dependence, and (3) NLO corrections to the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass spectrum. We argue that these three effects are crucial to test or exclude new physics effects in the top quark pair asymmetry.

Abstract:The improved standard model prediction for total top quark forward-backward asymmetry of 8.9% at the Tevatron has significantly reduced the long-term discrepancy between the theory value and the experimental observations. The seemingly "last" over-3 sigma anomaly is the CDF measurement of A(FB)(M-t (t) over bar > 450 GeV) and it is not seen by the D0 Collaboration. In this paper, we take the CDF measurement to obtain the best-fit parameter space for various previously proposed models, including axigluon, t-channel neutral current, charged current, and diquark models, then study the predictions of the corresponding parameter space on the direct search or indirect constrain. The particular axigluon model is excluded by the LHC dijet search. The t-channel Z' model suffer from the Tevatron same-sign dilepton search bound. The t-channel W' model and the diquark model both predict significant increase in the production rate of inclusive t (t) over bar search at the LHC which is not seen. We conclude none of the models are favored by the direct search bound.
Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the Distribution of Leptons Intt¯events in Thelepton+jetschannel

Abstract:We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons from decays of top quarks and antiquarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions. We consider the final state containing a lepton and at least three jets. The entire sample of data collected by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, is used. The asymmetry measured for reconstructed leptons is A(FB)(l) = (2.9 +/- 2.1(stat.)(-1.7)(+1.5) (syst.))%. When corrected for efficiency and resolution effects within the lepton rapidity coverage of vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5, the asymmetry is found to be A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.3(stat.)(-2.0)(+1.7) (syst.))%. We examine the dependence of A(FB)(l) on the transverse momentum and rapidity of the lepton. Combination with the asymmetry measured in the final states containing two leptons yields A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.0(stat.) +/- 1.4(syst.))%. The results are in agreement with predictions from the next-to-leading-order QCD generator MC@NLO, which predicts an asymmetry of A(FB)(l) = 2.0% for vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5.

Abstract:Axigluons are colored heavy neutral gauge boson that couple to quarks through an axial vector current and the same strong coupling as gluons. The most important model-independent manifestation of axigluons is the generation of a forward--backward asymmetry in top-antitop quark production at $p\bar{p}$ collisions which originates from the charge asymmetry. We update our previous analysis for the inclusive QCD induced forward--backward asymmetry and define a new observable which is more sensitive to the effect than the forward--backward asymmetry. Furthermore, we find a lower limit of 1.2 TeV at 90% C.L. on the axigluon mass from recent measurements of the asymmetry at Tevatron. Also at LHC, the charge asymmetry is sizable in suitably selected samples. We evaluate this asymmetry in the central region for different selection cuts and show that, like at Tevatron, the charge asymmetry can probe larger values of the axigluon mass than the dijet mass distribution.

Abstract:We consider the recent measurement of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron, which shows a discrepancy of slightly more than 2 sigma compared to the standard model prediction. We find that t-channel exchange of a color sextet or triplet scalar particle can explain the measurement, while leaving the cross section for t (t) over bar production within measured uncertainties. Such particles have good discovery prospects by study of the kinematic structure of t (t) over bar + jets at the LHC.

Abstract:The electroweak contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry in the production of top-quark pairs at the Tevatron are evaluated at O(alpha^2) and O(alpha*alphas^2). We perform a detailed analysis of all partonic channels that produce an asymmetry and combine them with the QCD contributions. They provide a non-negligible fraction of the QCD-induced asymmetry with the same overall sign, thus enlarging the Standard Model prediction and diminishing the observed deviation. For the observed mass-dependent forward-backward asymmetry a 3-sigma deviation still remains at an invariant-mass cut of M_(t-tbar) > 450 GeV.

Abstract:A sizable difference in top quark pair forward backward asymmetry (AFB) is observed at Tevatron. The discrepancy triggers many new physics beyond the standard model (SM) and then constrains the parameter spaces in them. In this article we calculate the AFB of the top-pair production at Tevatron up to next to leading order (NLO) in the little Higgs model (LHM). We find that the contribution of Z(H) can be large enough to make up the gap between SM prediction and experimental data. Then, the parameter space for the couplings between Z(H) and quarks are constrained. Thus, this model can fulfill the experimental data, both in AFB and in cross section.
A Revisit to Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry

Abstract:We analyze various models for the top quark forward-backward asymmetry ( A t F B) at the Tevatron, using the latest CDF measurements on different At F Bs and the total cross section. The axigluon model in Ref. [5] has difficulties in explaining the large rapidity dependent asymmetry and mass dependent asymmetry simultaneously and the parameter space relevant to A t F B is ruled out by the latest dijet search at ATLAS. In contrast to Ref. [8], we demonstrate that the large parameter space in this model with a U(1) d flavor symemtry is not ruled out by flavor physics. The t-channel flavor-violating Z ′ , W ′ and diquark models all have parameter regions that satisfy different AF B measurements within 1 σ. However, the heavy Z ′ model which can be marginally consistent with the total cross section is severely constrained by the Tevatron direct search of samesign top quark pair. The diquark model suffers from too large total cross section and is difficult to fit the t t¯ invariant mass distribution. The electroweak precision constraints on the W ′ model based on Z ′ - Z mixings is estimated and the result is rather weak ( m Z ′ > 450 GeV). Therefore, the heavy W ′ model seems to give the best fit for all the measurements. The W ′ model predicts the t t¯ + j signal from tW ′ production and is 10%-50% of SM t t¯ at the 7 TeV LHC. Such t + j resonance can serve as the direct test of the W ′ model.

Abstract:The top quark forward-backward asymmetry measured at the Tevatron collider shows a large deviation from standard model expectations. Among possible interpretations, a non-universal $Z^\prime$ model is of particular interest as it naturally predicts a top quark in the forward region of large rapidity. To reproduce the size of the asymmetry, the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to standard model quarks must be large, inevitably leading to copious production of same-sign top quark pairs at the energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We explore the discovery potential for $tt$ and $ttj$ production in early LHC experiments at 7-8 TeV and conclude that if {\it no} $tt$ signal is observed with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, then a non-universal $Z^\prime$ alone cannot explain the Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry.

Abstract:We present the complete calculations of the forward-backward asymmetry (A(FB)) and the total cross section of top quark pair production induced by dimension-six four quark operators at the Tevatron up to O(alpha(2)(s)/Lambda(2)). Our results show that next-to-leading order QCD corrections can change A(FB) and the total cross section by about 10%. Moreover, next-to-leading order QCD corrections reduce the dependence of AFB and total cross section on the renormalization and factorization scales significantly. We also evaluate the total cross section and the charge asymmetry (A(C)) induced by these operators at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) up to O(alpha(2)(s)/Lambda(2)), for the parameter space allowed by the Tevatron data. We find that the value of A(C) induced by these operators is much larger than standard model prediction, and LHC has potential to discover these new physics effects when the measurement precision increases.

Abstract:A quantity of particular experimental interest is the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of positively and negatively charged fermions produced in Z0 decays. Measurements of this asymmetry can enable independent determinations of the neutral-current couplings of these fermions, i.e., the Z0 boson couplings for left- and right-handed fermions, respectively. Due to the quark confinement, however, it is difficult to determine the electroweak interactions of quarks, especially for light quarks. In the hadron production electron positron annihilation process, the parton model with factorization theorem gives a reliable approximate description. Quantities are thus expressed in terms of fragmentation functions in the annihilation process. In this paper, we consider the vector meson production in the inclusive electron positron annihilation process and calculate the forward-backward asymmetry in the hadronic level. Calculations are carried out by applying the collinear expansion in the parton model at leading order twist-4. We note here this process provides not only a tool for analyzing the hadronic weak interactions but also an opportunity for understanding the parton model of the strong interaction. Up Asymmetries From Exhilarated Composite Flavor Structures

Abstract:We present a class of warped extra dimension (composite Higgs) models which conjointly accommodates the t\bar t forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron and the direct CP asymmetry in singly Cabibbo suppressed D decays first reported by the LHCb collaboration. We argue that both asymmetries, if arising dominantly from new physics beyond the Standard Model, hint for a flavor paradigm within partial compositeness models in which the right-handed quarks of the first two generations are not elementary fields but rather composite objects. We show that this class of models is consistent with current data on flavor and CP violating physics, electroweak precision observables, dijet and top pair resonance searches at hadron colliders. These models have several predictions which will be tested in forthcoming experiments. The CP asymmetry in D decays is induced through an effective operator of the form (\bar u c)_{V+A}(\bar s s)_{V+A} at the charm scale, which implies a larger CP asymmetry in the D^0\to K^+K^- rate relative the D^0\to \pi^+\pi^- channel. This prediction is distinctive from other Standard Model or dipole-based new physics interpretation of the LHCb result. CP violation in D-\bar D mixing as well as an an excess of dijet production of the LHC are also predicted to be observed in a near future. A large top asymmetry originates from the exchange of an axial resonance which dominantly produces left-handed top pairs. As a result a negative contribution to the lepton-based forward-backward asymmetry in t\bar t production, as well as O(10%) forward-backward asymmetry in b\bar b production above m_{b\bar b}\simeq 600GeV at the Tevatron is expected.

Probing new physics with charge asymmetries in 2 same-sign leptons plus jets final states at the LHC

Abstract:We study the impact of new physics models in the charge asymmetry defined for LHC final states consisting of two same-sign leptons (2SS$l$, with $l= e, \mu$) plus jets ($N_\text{jets}\geq2$), with a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, where the main SM contribution is $t\bar{t}W$ production. Concretely, we consider three different new physics sources for the charge asymmetries: a heavy neutral scalar/pseudoscalar arising from the general two Higgs doublet model, an effective theory with dimension-6 four-quark operators, and a simplified $R$-parity-violating supersymmetric model with electroweakino production (higgsino-like or wino-like). We propose measuring the charge asymmetries differentially with respect to several kinematic observables, and inclusively/exclusively with the number of $b$-tagged jets in the final state ($N_b\geq\{1, 2, 3\}$). Results are compared with the SM prediction using the $\chi^2$ criteria, expressing sensitivity in terms of the normal Gaussian significance. We show that some of the proposed new physics scenarios can be probed at the LHC even for the already recorded integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. Finally, we also estimate the prospects for the potential LHC sensitivity to the considered new physics models in its high-luminosity phase.

Our setup is fully differential and can be used to calculate any infrared-safe observable. Especially we calculated the next-to-nextto-leading order corrections to top-quark forward-backward asymmetry and found sizable effects. Our results show a large reduction of the theoretical uncertainties in predictions of the forwardbackward asymmetry, and allow a precision determination of the top quark electroweak couplings at future ee colliders.

Abstract: A larger than expected forward-backward asymmetry in rapidity is observed in top quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. The asymmetry is seen in both the top quark distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quark decay. In this paper, we study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the tight relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We also consider two benchmark new physics models, an axigluon model and a flavor-changing $W^\prime$ model. These models could explain the values of both $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.
