Abstract:The progress made over the past two decades in asymmetric catalysis, focusing on chiral Lewis acid complexes of rare-earth metal, is reviewed. Abstract:A metal-coordination-based high performance asymmetric catalyst utilizing metal centrochirality as the sole element of chirality is reported. The introduced substitutionally labile chiral-at-metal octahedral iridium(III) complex exclusively bears achiral ligands and effectively catalyzes the enantioselective Friedel-Crafts addition of indoles to α,β-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles (19 examples) with high yields (75%-99%) and high enantioselectivities (90-98% ee) at low catalyst loadings (0.25-2 mol %). Counterintuitively, despite its substitutional lability, which is mechanistically required for coordination to the 2-acyl imidazole substrate, the metal-centered chirality is maintained throughout the catalysis. This novel class of reactive chiral-at-metal complexes will likely be of high value for a large variety of asymmetric transformations.

Abstract:Chiral pincer complexes, characterized by their rigid tridentate coordination framework, have emerged as powerful catalysts in asymmetric synthesis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the development of chiral pincer-type ligands and their corresponding transition metal complexes. We highlight the latest progress in their application across a range of catalytic asymmetric reactions, including the (transfer) hydrogenation of polar and non-polar bonds, hydrophosphination, alkynylation, Friedel-Crafts reactions, enantioselective reductive cyclization of alkynyl-tethered cyclohexadienones, enantioselective hydrosilylation, as well as Aza–Morita–Baylis–Hillman reactions. The structural rigidity and tunability of chiral pincer complexes enable precise control over stereoselectivity, resulting in high enantioselectivity and efficiency in complex molecular transformations. As the field advances, innovations in ligand design and the exploration of new metal centers are expected to expand the scope and utility of these catalysts, bearing significant implications for the synthesis of enantioenriched compounds in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and beyond.

Abstract:Due to the relationship between structure and function in chemistry, access to novel chemical structures ultimately drives the discovery of novel chemical function. In this light, the formidable utility of the octahedral geometry of six-coordinate metal complexes is founded in its stereochemical complexity combined with the ability to access chemical space that might be unavailable for purely organic compounds. In this Minireview we wish to draw attention to inert octahedral chiral-at-metal complexes as an emerging class of metal-templated asymmetric "organocatalysts" which exploit the globular, rigid nature and stereochemical options of octahedral compounds and promise to provide new opportunities in the field of catalysis.

Abstract:Abstract Chiral iodoarenes have been steadily increasing in importance in recent years, especially in enantioselective synthesis and catalysis. Since the development of the concept of chiral iodine(I/III) catalysis, the use of various chiral aryliodine frameworks has been explored in this area. Abstract:Recently, the field of heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis, generally using chiral solid catalysts, has attracted much attention in the production of single enantiomers. Among versatile chiral solid catalysts, chiral metal complexes confined in nanoreactors often exhibit very unique enantioselectivity and catalytic activity compared to homogeneous catalysts. In this Focus Review, we summarize the recent advances in asymmetric reactions on chiral metal complexes confined in nanoreactors with an emphasis on the confinement effect and cooperative activation effect of the nanoreactor and new strategies for the preparation of chiral solid catalysts, such as the encapsulation of chiral metal complexes in the nanocages of mesoporous silica and incorporation of chiral ligands in the network of mesoporous organosilicas.

Abstract:Asymmetric catalysis is of crucial importance owing to the huge and rising demand for optically pure substances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as two emerging crystalline porous materials, have presented great promising applications for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. The unique properties, such as, highly regular porous structures, prominent structural tunability, and well-ordered catalytic sites, render chiral MOFs (CMOFs) and chiral COFs (CCOFs) highly active and enantioselective for a large number of asymmetric catalytic organic transformations. Furthermore, they provide a useful platform for facile mechanistic understanding and catalyst design. This review provides an overview of the advancements in CMOFs and CCOFs for asymmetric catalysis. The designs, syntheses and structures of these crystalline porous materials, and their asymmetric catalytic performance are described. And the perspectives on challenges and opportunities in development of CMOFs and CCOFs are discussed. It is anticipated that this review will shed light on the heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis with CMOFs and CCOFs and motivate further research in this promising field.

Abstract:As a structural analog of oxazoline, imidazoline (4,5-dihydroimidazole) has received much attention in the rational design of chiral ligands. The additional N-substituent provides broader space for fine-tuning of electronic and steric effects, and it offers a good handle for immobilizing onto solid supports. In the past decades, imidazoline ring has emerged as a powerful candidate for the design of chiral nitrogen-containing ligands, as well as a significant alternative for oxazoline ring. Various chiral imidazoline ligands have been designed and utilized in asymmetric organic reactions. These new catalysts can not only be applied in classical reactions, but also be employed to develop new organic reactions with high enantioselectivities. This review provides an overview of chiral imidazoline ligands. Their applications in asymmetric synthesis are also summarized.

Abstract:The strong σ-donor but poor π-acceptor abilities of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) result in chemical stability and coordination versatility, thus allowing them to coordinate with many metals ranging from alkaline-earth metals to rare-earth metals. Moreover, the easy introduction of chiral elements into NHCs and the facile preparation of their precursors have made chiral NHCs promising chiral ligands in metal-based asymmetric catalysis. Therefore, strategies for the design of efficient NHC–metal catalysts and novel asymmetric synthetic methodologies have dramatically increased over the past 10 years. Herein, the growing field of chiral NHC–metal-based asymmetric catalysis is comprehensively described.

Abstract:The development of efficient catalysts and ligands bearing novel chiral backbones plays a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis. Our group has developed conformationally flexible, C-2-symmetric N,N'-dioxide amide compounds as a new class of privileged ligands, which form complexes with a number of metal salts leading to efficient catalysts for a number of asymmetric reactions. In this review, we highlight important asymmetric reactions that are promoted by chiral N,N'-dioxide-Ni(II) complexes, and shed some light on their mode of action.

Abstract:The effective synthesis of chiral compounds in a highly enantioselective manner is obviously attractive. Inspired by the enzymatic reactions that occur in pocket-like cavities with high efficiency and specificity, chemists are seeking to construct catalysts that mimic this key feature of enzymes. Recent progress in supramolecular coordination chemistry has shown that metal-organic cages (MOCs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with chiral confined cavities/pores may offer a novel platform for achieving asymmetric catalysis with high enantioselectivity. The inherent chiral confined microenvironment is considered to be analogous to the binding pocket of enzymes, and this pocket promotes enantioselective transformations. This work focuses on the recent advances in MOCs and MOFs with chiral confined spaces for asymmetric catalysis, and each section is separated into two parts based on how the chirality is achieved in these metal-organic architectures. A special emphasis is placed on discussing the relationship between the enantioselectivity and the confined spaces of the chiral functional MOCs and MOFs rather than catalytic chemistry. Finally, current challenges and perspectives are discussed. This work is anticipated to offer researchers insights into the design of sophisticated chiral confined space-based metal-organic architectures for asymmetric catalysis with high enantioselectivity.
