Abstract:Hierarchical V2O5 microspheres composed of stacked platelets are fabricated through a facile, low-cost, and energy-saving approach. The preparation procedure involves a room-temperature precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution and subsequent calcination. Because of this unique structure, V2O5 microspheres manifest a high capacity (266 mA h g(-1)), excellent rate capability (223 mA h g(-1) at a current density 2400 mA g(-1)), and good cycling stability (200 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:Mo-doped V2O5 hierarchical nanorod/nanoparticle core/shell porous microspheres (MVHPMs) were prepared via a simple hydrothermal approach using ammonium metavanadate and ammonium molybdate as precursors followed by a thermal annealing process. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and XPS carefully; it confirmed that porous microspheres with uniform Mo doping in the V2O5 matrix were obtained, and it contains an inner core self-assembled with 1D nanorods and outer shell consisting of nanoparticles. A plausible growth mechanism of Mo-doped V2O5 (Mo-V2O5) porous microspheres is suggested. The unique microstructure made the Mo-V2O5 hierarchical microspheres a good cathode material for Li-ion battery. The results indicate the synthesized Mo-V2O5 hierarchical microspheres exhibit well-improved electrochemical performance compared to the undoped samples. It delivers a high initial reversible capacity of 282 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C, 208 mAh g−1 at 2 C, and 111 mAh g−1 at 10 C, and it also exhibits good cycling stabilities; a capacity of 144 mAh g−1 is obtained after 200 cycles at 6 C with a capacity retention of > 82%, which is much high than that of pure V2O5 (95 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 72%).Graphical AbstractMo-doped V2O5 hierarchical porous microspheres with improved LIB performance

Abstract:Fabricating hollow/porous structures and coating carbon on their surfaces are two effective strategies to improve the electrochemical properties of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, we report the successful synthesis of novel hierarchical Zn3V3O8/C microspheres assembled from unique porous hollow nanoplates via a facile reverse microemulsion method and a subsequent annealing process. Notably, the PVP assisted heterogeneous contraction effect plays an important role in the formation of the distinctive hollow structure in the constituent nanoplates during the annealing process. Impressively, the resulting Zn3V3O8/C composite shows excellent electrochemical performance with a large capacity (912 mA h g(-1) at 0.4 A g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (410 mA h g(-1) at 3.2 A g(-1)) and cycling stability (756 mA h g(-1) at 1.6 A g(-1) after 500 cycles) when evaluated as the anode material for LIBs. The superior electrochemical performance of the as-synthesized Zn3V3O8/C microspheres can be attributed to the existence of carbon on the surface and, in particular, the unique porous hollow nanoplate structure.

Abstract:Developing advanced cathode materials to achieve the high-power applications is an important technology for the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, hierarchical LiMnPO4 microspheres are designed and fabricated using MnCO3 microspheres as the self-sacrificial template. The novel hierarchical structure with high tap density and more exposed active sites is favorable for the electrolyte penetration and also provides sufficient contact areas for fast Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation reaction. In addition, the uniform thin carbon layer extending from the interior to the outside of the LiMnPO4 microsphere, could further construct a conductive and robust carbon network, which will inevitably accelerate the transport of electrons and improve the discharge capacity. Specifically, a high reversibility capacity of 158.4 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C and 104.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 C is achieved. Furthermore, the superior capacity retention with 98% after 200 cycles at 5 C is maintained, revealing an excellent cycle stability. This work may open up a promising strategy to prepare other advanced electrode materials. (C) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 microspheres have been successfully synthesized via a facile in situ route with MnO2 as the sacrificial template. The as-obtained sample shows a unique nano/micro-hierarchical structure. As a cathode material for lithium-ion battery, the sample exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with higher capacity, superior cycling stability and rate capability as compared with that prepared by conventional co-precipitate reaction method. The discharge specific capacities for the first cycle are 196, 187, 182 and 176 mA h g (1) at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 C, respectively. The superior performance can be ascribed to the unique microstructure with numerous nanosized primary particles that can provide rapid pathway for Li+ and e diffusion, and facilitate the penetration of the electrolyte. Abstract:Zinc-vanadium oxides have been attracting increasing consideration as anode materials for lithium/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs and SIBs) recently. Present applications are hampered by issues, including their inferior electric conductivity and enormous volume variation. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Zn3V3O8 (Zn3V3O8/NC) microspheres composed of abundant nanosheets were developed as an anode material by a self-assembly strategy and subsequent surface decoration. The resulting Zn3V3O8/NC porous hybrid exhibited a high specific capacity, impressive rate capability, and long-term cycling stability for both LIBs and SIBs. Notably, the superior electrochemical properties could be assigned to novel meso/microporous features, hybrid nitrogen-doped carbon, and mixed storage mechanisms.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 is currently one of the most promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries because of its low cost, abundant Mn resources and environmental friendliness. In the current work, we described a facile solution approach for the synthesis of Li4Ti5O12-modified LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres for stable and high rate cathode materials. When the synthesized LiMn2O4@Li4Ti5O12 was applied as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, it exhibits improved performance and enhanced power capability. First discharge capacity presents 102 mA h g−1 and it has the capacity of 97 mA h g−1 with the Coulombic efficiency of 97% at 1C rate.

Abstract:In this paper, three kinds of activated carbon microspheres with different particle size were prepared by hydrothermal method and carbon dioxide activation method by adjusting the concentration of sucrose solution (0.15M, 0.3M and 1.5M, respectively). Three kinds of composite materials, S-AMCS-0.15, S-AMCS-0.3 and S-AMCS-1.5, were prepared by the real air phase method, and the corresponding sulfur contents were 52%, 46% and 42%, respectively. The structure and morphology of various materials were characterized. The electrochemical properties of the three composites were investigated and compared. The experimental results show that S-AMCS-0.15 has good electrochemical performance. Due to the small particle size of AMCS-0.15 carbon microspheres, the active materials inside the spheres can be fully reacted. In order to further optimize the electrochemical properties of the composite, the material was treated by ball milling. The results show that the capacity retention and cycling properties of the composite have been improved to a certain extent. The discharge specific capacity in the second week also increased from 720 mAh g-1 to more than 1180 mAh g-1. And the discharge capacity maintained above 800 mAh g-1 for the first 60 cycles.

Abstract:LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C x Fe 1-x PO 4 /C is considered a promising next-generation cathode material with significant commercial potential, inheriting the safety of LiFePO4 4 while offering higher energy densities. However, the extremely low conductivity and the Jahn-Teller effect induced by Mn3+ 3 + limit its practical capacity and rate performance. Effective modifications can be achieved through particle nanonization and uniform carbon coating. Here, we synthesized microspherical LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C 0.6 Fe 0.4 PO 4 /C cathode materials using a hydrothermal method combined with spray drying carbon coating. The cathode material exhibits a microsphere structure composed of aggregated nanorods with a uniform 3 nm carbon coating, showing good dispersibility, small specific surface area and high tap density. In-situ diffraction analysis showed that expanding the single-phase solid solution region during (de) lithiation can reduce the energy barrier for electron transport, improve the kinetics of the (dis)charge process, and enhance both cycling and rate performance. The initial capacity at 0.1C can reach 155 mAh/g, and the capacity remains at 133.5 mAh/g with a retention rate of 97.1 % after 300 cycles. The synergistic effect of particle nanonization and uniform carbon coating endows the LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C x Fe 1-x PO 4 /C material with excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis and application of spinel LiMn2O4 with unique micro-/nano-hybrid structure as a promising cathode for high power Li-ion batteries. LiMn2O4 with high crystallinity has been prepared successfully by solid-state lithiation of hexagonal MnO2 via a template-engaged reaction. The product presents hollow microsphere with ultrathin outer shell assembled by nanoparticles. Electrochemical measurements indicate that LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres exhibit superior rate capability and cycleability to the solid microspheres and commercial bulk counterparts. The initial discharge capacity of 91 mAh g(-1) can be delivered at 20 C, and capacity retention of over 90% is obtained after 500 cycles at this high rate. The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique micro-/nano-hybrid structure that facilitates the fast Li-intercalation kinetics and good structure stability.

Abstract:Unique self-assembled iron(II) molybdenum (IV) oxide (Fe2Mo3O8) mesoporous hollow spheres have been facilely constructed via the bubble-template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method combined with simple calcination. The compact assembly of small nanoparticles on the surface of the hollow spheres not only provides more active sites for the Fe2Mo3O8, but also benefits the stability of the hollow structure, and thus improved the lithium storage properties of Fe2Mo3O8. The Fe2Mo3O8 mesoporous hollow spheres exhibit high initial discharge and charge capacities of 1189 and 997 mA·h·g−1 respectively, as well as good long-term cycling stability (866 mA · h · g−1 over 70 cycles) when used as a lithium-ion battery anode. This feasible material synthesis strategy will inspire the variation of structural design in other ternary metal molybdates.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are receiving considerable attention for large-scale energy-storage systems. However, to date the current cathode/anode system cannot satisfy safety, cost, and performance requirements for such applications. Here, a lithium-ion full battery based on the combination of a Li3 VO4 anode with a LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 cathode is reported, which displays a better performance than existing systems. Carbon-coated Li3 VO4 spheres comprising nanoscale carbon-coating primary particles are synthesized by a morphology-inheritance route. The observed high capacity combined with excellent sample stability and high rate capability of carbon-coated Li3 VO4 spheres is superior to other insertion anode materials. A high-performance full lithium-ion battery is fabricated by using the carbon-coated Li3 VO4 spheres as the anode and LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 spheres as the cathode; such a cell shows an estimated practical energy density of 205 W h kg-1 with greatly improved properties such as pronounced long-term cyclability, and rapid charge and discharge.
Porous LiMn2O4 Microspheres As Durable High Power Cathode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Porous LiMn2O4 microspheres, which are constructed with nanometer-sized primary particles, have been synthesized by a facile method using porous MnCO3 microspheres as a self-supporting template. The LiMn2O4 microspheres were characterized by XRD, SEM and HR-TEM. The as-synthesized porous LiMn2O4 microspheres exhibit high rate capability and long-term cyclability as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, with the specific discharge capacity of 119, 107 and 98 mA h g(-1) and the corresponding capacity retention of 82, 91 and 80% for up to 500 cycles at 2, 10 and 20 C, respectively. The high rate performance and good cyclability are believed to result from the porous structure, reasonable primary particle size and high crystallinity of the obtained material, which favor fast Li intercalation/deintercalation kinetics by allowing electrolyte insertion through the nanoparticles and high structural stability during the reversible electrochemical process. The high level of Mn4+ concentration on the surface of the sample can alleviate the Jahn-Teller transition, which was triggered normally by the equal amounts of Mn4+/Mn3+ concentration on the surface of the LiMn2O4 cathode material. This good example offering extended cycle life at 20 C rate for the LiMn2O4 microspheres indicates their promising application as cathode materials for high performance LIBs.
Nanostructured Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C Composite As High-Rate and Long-Life Cathode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nanostructured Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C composite has been synthesized by a facile microemulsion method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirm that the as-prepared Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C sample shows the pure monoclinic structure and nanosphere morphology. Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C has a particle size of about 100 nm, and these nanoparticles are connected each other by the conductive carbon network. Electrochemical measurements demonstratethat the Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C nanoparticles can deliver discharge capacities of 129.8, 126.1, 118.0, 116.1 and 110.1 mAh g(-1) between 3.0 and 43 V, and 171.4, 163.1, 153.2, 144.0 and 133.4 mAh g(-1) between 3.0 and 4.8V at 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20C, respectively. Even at 20C rate, it still can present a reversible discharge capacity of 101.8 mAh g(-1) with 92.5% capacity retention after 1400 cycles and 96.4 mAh g(-1) with 72.3% capacity retention after 1000 cycles in the potential ranges of 3.0-4.3 V and 3.0-4.8 V, respectively. The excellent rate capability and long-term cycle performance demonstrate that the Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C nanoparticles prepared in this work has great potential for application as cathode materials in high-power lithium ion batteries. Abstract:Hollow 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) microspheres are synthesized on a large scale through a simple in situ template-sacrificial route. Starting from porous MnO2 microspheres, the hollow microspheres assembled with 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) nanocrystals are formed by a nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The nanocrystal-assembled hollow 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) microspheres exhibit a highly reversible capacity as high as 295 mAh g(-1) over 100 cycles and excellent rate capability (125 mAh g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1)). Benefitting from a unique hollow and nanocrystalline architecture, the as-formed hollow microspheres show much enhanced high-temperature (55 degrees C) electrochemical performances, compared with the products obtained by conventional sol-gel/solid-state reaction methods. This work demonstrates that a fabrication strategy based on the present in situ template-sacrificial approach offers a new method for the design of high-performance cathode materials with hollow interiors for Li-ion battery applications.

Abstract:Nano-Li4Ti5O12 pore microspheres were synthesized by hydrothermal and subsequent calcination methods using Ti-(OC4H9)(4) and LiAc center dot 2H(2)O as raw materials. TEM analysis highlights the excellent crystallinity of the nano-sized Li4Ti5O12 primary particles with the size between 30-40 nm. As anode material of lithium ion batteries, the nano-Li4Ti5O12 exhibits higher capacity and better rate capability, delivering the 1 degrees C capacity close to the theoretical value of 175 mAh g(-1), 10C capacity of 133 mAh g(-1) and even 60 degrees C capacity of 80 mAh g(-1). Abstract:Spinel cathode materials consisting of LiMn2O4@LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 hollow microspheres have been synthesized by a facile solution-phase coating and subsequent solid-phase lithiation route in an atmosphere of air. When used as the cathode of lithium-ion batteries, the double-shell LiMn2O4@LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 hollow microspheres thus obtained show a high specific capacity of 120mAhg(-1) at 1C rate, and excellent rate capability (90mAhg(-1) at 10C) over the range of 3.5-5V versus Li/Li+ with a retention of 95% over 500cycles.
