Abstract:A discrete random wavelet transformation is defined as a random field of stochastic integrals of translates and dilates of a compactly supported wavelet function with respect to a fractional Brownian motion. It is shown that the transformation exhibits several properties analogous to the ones demonstrated previously for the `classical' wavelet transformation of a fractional Brownian motion. Moreover, some important advantages of the transformation defined here, over its `classical' counterpart, are demonstrated.
Continuous Wavelet Transformation of Seismic Data for Feature Extraction

Abstract:Continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) as a new mathematical tool has provided deep insights for the identification of localized anomalous zone in the time series data set. In this study, a three-layer geological model is investigated by CWT to locate seismic reflections temporally and spatially. This model consists of three layers, where the third layers of the anticline structure are assumed to act as a pure sandstone hydrocarbon reservoir with 10% porosity. The equation of Gassmann has been implemented for the pore fluid substitution in the reservoir. Synthetic seismic data are generated for the three-layer geological model. Due to the presence of noise, it is always difficult to interpret seismic data. But, CWT has the ability of noise reduction, improving the visualization of a data set and locating the anomalies in terms of scalogram and 3D CWT coefficients. Synthetic seismic data of the geological structure are transformed by CWT. The successful transformation of P-wave velocity, synthetic seismic data and acoustic impedance inversion provided evidence to distinguish different interfaces accurately. CWT has successfully located seismic reflections by localizing high-energy spectrum within the cone of influence. Three high-energy spectrums have been identified at 0.8 s, 1 s and 1.07 s, and it exactly matches the seismic data and three-layer geological model.

Abstract:The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has played a key role in the analysis of time-frequency information in many different fields of science and engineering. It builds on the classical short-time Fourier transform but allows for variable time-frequency resolution. Yet, interpretation of the resulting spectral decomposition is often hindered by smearing and leakage of individual frequency components. Computation of instantaneous frequencies, combined by frequency reassignment, may then be applied by highly localized techniques, such as the synchrosqueezing transform and ConceFT, in order to reduce these effects. In this paper, we present the synchrosqueezing transform together with the CWT and illustrate their relative performances using four signals from different fields, namely the LIGO signal showing gravitational waves, a 'FanQuake' signal displaying observed vibrations during an American football game, a seismic recording of the Mw 8.2 Chiapas earthquake, Mexico, of 8 September 2017, followed by the Irma hurricane, and a volcano-seismic signal recorded at the Popocatépetl volcano showing a tremor followed by harmonic resonances. These examples illustrate how high-localization techniques improve analysis of the time-frequency information of time-varying signals.This article is part of the theme issue 'Redundancy rules: the continuous wavelet transform comes of age'.

Abstract:Two different procedures for effecting a frequency analysis of a time-dependent signal locally in time are studied. The first procedure is the short-time or windowed Fourier transform; the second is the wavelet transform, in which high-frequency components are studied with sharper time resolution than low-frequency components. The similarities and the differences between these two methods are discussed. For both schemes a detailed study is made of the reconstruction method and its stability as a function of the chosen time-frequency density. Finally, the notion of time-frequency localization is made precise, within this framework, by two localization theorems.<>

Continuous Time Locally Stationary Wavelet Processes

Abstract:This article introduces the class of continuous time locally stationary wavelet processes. Continuous time models enable us to properly provide scale-based time series models for irregularly-spaced observations for the first time, while also permitting a spectral representation of the process over a continuous range of scales. We derive results for both the theoretical setting, where we assume access to the entire process sample path, and a more practical one, which develops methods for estimating the quantities of interest from sampled time series. The latter estimates are accurately computable in reasonable time by solving the relevant linear integral equation using the iterative thresholding method due to Daubechies, Defrise and De Mol. Appropriate smoothing techniques are also developed and applied in this new setting. We exemplify our new methods by computing spectral and autocovariance estimates on irregularly-spaced heart rate data obtained from a recent sleep-state study.

Abstract:As every engineering student knows, any signal can be portrayed as an overlay of sinusoidal waveforms of assorted frequencies. But while classical analysis copes superbly with naturally occurring sinusoidal behavior-the kind seen in speech signals-it is ill-suited to representing signals with discontinuities, such as the edges of features in images. Latterly, another powerful concept has swept applied mathematics and engineering research: wavelet analysis. In contrast to a Fourier sinusoid, which oscillates forever, a wavelet is localized in time-it lasts for only a few cycles. Like Fourier analysis, however, wavelet analysis uses an algorithm to decompose a signal into simpler elements. Here, the authors describe how localized waveforms are powerful building blocks for signal analysis and rapid prototyping-and how they are now available in software toolkits.

Abstract:Wavelet transforms originated in geophysics in the early 1980s for the analysis of seismic signals. Since then, significant mathematical advances in wavelet theory have enabled a suite of applications in diverse fields. In geophysics the power of wavelets for analysis of nonstationary processes that contain multiscale features, detection of singularities, analysis of transient phenomena, fractal and multifractal processes, and signal compression is now being exploited for the study of several processes including space‐time precipitation, remotely sensed hydrologic fluxes, atmospheric turbulence, canopy cover, laud surface topography, seafloor bathymetry, and ocean wind waves. It is anticipated that in the near future, significant further advances in understanding and modeling geophysical processes will result from the use of wavelet analysis. In this paper we review the basic properties of wavelets that make them such an attractive and powerful tool for geophysical applications. We discuss continuous, discrete, orthogonal wavelets and wavelet packets and present applications to geophysical processes.

It is shown that these transforms can lead to simultaneous compression and de-noising of signals that have been corrupted with fractional noises. Potential applications of algebraic geometric coding theory to encode the ensuing data are also discussed.

Abstract:Empirical wavelets transform (EWT) is a fully adaptive signal-analysis approach, which is similar to the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) but has a consolidated mathematical theory, and is appealing in designing automatic algorithm for a variety of signal processing tasks. EWT first estimates the frequency components presented in the given signal, then, computes the boundaries and extracts the oscillatory components based on the computed boundaries. Because of the excellent performance of the EWT in decomposing the nonlinear and non-stationary signals, it has been successfully applied into a number of problems. The last six years have seen the development of EWT. This paper presents a general overview of the recent advancements made in research on the EWT algorithm and its state-of-the-art applications in a wide range of areas, such as machine fault diagnosis, seismic data analysis, image processing, power system monitoring, and medical disease diagnosis, which aims at providing some comprehensive references for reader concerning with EWT. We place emphasis on the applications of using such signal-analysis algorithm throughout with illustrative examples. Finally, the potential avenues for the future trends and directions associated with EWT are discussed.

Abstract:Some signals captured in practical applications are usually composed of a series of modes that have multivalued time-dependent instantaneous frequency (IF), i.e., transient signal, which enables some advanced time-frequency analysis (TFA) tools no longer ideal or even ineffective. Fortunately, the group delay (GD) of such signal can be well expressed as a single valued function of frequency. By considering frequency-domain signal model suitable for describing GD, we develop a postprocessing technique called wavelet transform (WT)-based time-reassigned synchrosqueezing transform (WTSST). In WTSST, the TF coefficients diffused in WT are gathered to GD of transient signal aiming to generate a more concentrated time-frequency representation (TFR) and WTSST allows to retrieve the whole or part of signal. Considering analytic WT under Gaussian function, the theoretical analyses of WTSST are provided, which includes the analyses of GD candidate accuracy and signal reconstruction accuracy. Moreover, based on the theoretical analyses of WTSST, the WT-based time-reassigned multisynchrosqueezing transform (WTMSST) is proposed by introducing a fixed-point iteration scheme, which further improves the shortcoming that WTSST is unable to accurately describe strong frequency-varying signal. Simulation and real signal analyses illustrate that the proposed method has capacity to appropriately describe the features of transient signals.

This approach is based on a pair of orthogonal wavelet functions and is named as the Fourier-Like and Hartley-Like wavelet analysis. A Hilbert transform analysis on the wavelet theory is also included.

Abstract:This article will start from the fundamental theory of wavelet Multiresolution Analysis and provide a brief summary of the advantages and limitations of various numerical methods based on wavelet bases. The objective of this article is to assist researchers in choosing the appropriate numerical methodologies for their particular physical issues. Furthermore, it will explore prospective advancements in wavelet‐based techniques, offering valuable insights for researchers committed to enhancing wavelet numerical methods in the field of computational physics. The quantitative study of many physical problems ultimately boils down to solving various partial differential equations (PDEs). Wavelet analysis, known as the "mathematical microscope", has been hailed for its excellent Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) capabilities and its basis functions that possess various desirable mathematical qualities such as orthogonality, compact support, low‐pass filtering, and interpolation. These properties make wavelets a powerful tool for efficiently solving these PDEs. Over the past 30 years, numerical methods such as wavelet Galerkin methods, wavelet collocation methods, wavelet finite element methods, and wavelet integral collocation methods have been proposed and successfully applied in the quantitative analysis of various physical problems. This article will start from the fundamental theory of wavelet MRA and provide a brief summary of the advantages and limitations of various numerical methods based on wavelet bases. Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study the Weyl transform of functions which are integrable with respect to a vector measure on a phase space associated to a locally compact abelian group. We also study the Weyl transform of vector measures. Later, we also introduce and study the convolution of functions from $L^p$-spaces associated to a vector measure. We also study the Weyl transform of vector-valued functions and prove a vector-valued analogue of the Hausdorff-Young inequality.

Abstract:Wavelet analysis and compression tools are reviewed and different applications for the study of MHD and plasma turbulence are presented. We introduce the continuous and the orthogonal wavelet transform and detail several statistical diagnostics based on the wavelet coefficients. We then show how to extract coherent structures out of fully developed turbulent flows using wavelet-based denoising. Finally some multiscale numerical simulation schemes using wavelets are described. Several examples for analysing, compressing and computing one-, two- and three-dimensional turbulent MHD or plasma flows are presented.

Abstract:This comprehensive review paper delves into the intricacies of advanced Fourier type integral transforms and their mathematical properties, with a particular focus on fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), linear canonical transform (LCT), quadratic phase Fourier transform (QPFT), and their associated offshoots: windowed Fourier transform, wavelet transform, and Stockwell transform. In the pursuit of a deeper understanding of these transformations, we explore their convolution properties, shedding light on their capacity to define windowed, wavelet and Stockwell transforms in the realm of Fourier, fractional Fourier and quadratic phase Fourier transforms. This review also expands its purview to the realm of uncertainty principles. Several uncertainty principles, like Heisenberg, logarithmic, local, Rényi uncertainty principles, etc., within the context of fractional Fourier, linear canonical, and quadratic phase Fourier transforms, as well as their derivative offshoots are presented in the paper both for the functions of complex as well as quatenrion valued. In particular, the counterpart of several important inequalities of classical Fourier transform are also presented in details for the quaternion case. This article also reviews that multiresolution analysis that has been developed in the literature so far.

Abstract:The development of wavelet theory has in recent years spawned applications in signal processing, in fast algorithms for integral transforms, and in image and function representation methods. This last application has stimulated interest in wavelet applications to statistics and to the analysis of experimental data, with many successes in the efficient analysis, processing, and compression of noisy signals and images. This is a selective review article that attempts to synthesize some recent work on ``nonlinear'' wavelet methods in nonparametric curve estimation and their role on a variety of applications. After a short introduction to wavelet theory, we discuss in detail several wavelet shrinkage and wavelet thresholding estimators, scattered in the literature and developed, under more or less standard settings, for density estimation from i.i.d. observations or to denoise data modeled as observations of a signal with additive noise. Most of these methods are fitted into the general concept of regularization with appropriately chosen penalty functions. A narrow range of applications in major areas of statistics is also discussed such as partial linear regression models and functional index models. The usefulness of all these methods are illustrated by means of simulations and practical examples.
