Abstract:An optical correlator that utilizes one phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) combined with a mirror is proposed and demonstrated. This system is compressed by displaying the input and filter pattern on different parts of the same SLM. The background noise is separated from the correlation signal by superimposing a high-frequency carrier with the filter pattern except in the zero-frequency regions, which will improve the signal-to-noise ratio in pattern recognition. Our architecture is compact and the cost is relatively low by utilizing only one SLM.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a parallel phase-only lensless optical correlator based on two pieces of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulators. Phase Fresnel Lens Array and specialized grating are implemented to realize multi-channel and multiplexed LOC. Experimental results of Chinese characters' recognitions are given as demonstration of proposed technique. High uniformity of processing channels has been verified by autocorrelation process of four same Chinese characters. The technique is programmable and adjustment of optical path could be realized without changing of optical setup. The implementations could be performed on the same configuration as single channel optical correlator without mechanical alternation.

Abstract:Compared with the classic correlator, the binary joint transform correlator can provide significantly higher peak intensity, larger peak to sidelobe ratio and narrower correlation width. Taking advantages of the saturation property of liquid crystal light valve (LCLV), an inverse binary joint transform correlator can be obtained. In experiment, a He-Ne laser of 6 mW was used as light source for writing, and a He-Ne laser of 3 mW was used as that for reading. the experimental result is very satisfactory. The all-optical system is simple and can be easily operated.

Abstract:We introduce a new filter for an optical correlator that produces the spatial derivative of the optical correlation between an input object and a reference object. The derivative signal has a dark spot at the center of the correlation output. The width of this dark spot is narrower than the width of the conventional correlator bright spot and provides more precise location of the input object as well as a higher signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract:Because of the high density and high parallelism of the volume holographic storage, volume holographic correlator can be used as parallel multiple pattern filters. It has a natural feature for the parallel optical computing. However, the applications of this kind of correlator are limited due to low accuracy of the computing results and small number of parallel channels. To improve the data processing accuracy, some methods are proposed and employed to reduce the noise and computing error of the volume holographic correlator. The sidelobes of the correlation pattern can be totally suppressed. The shapes of the correlation patterns are made uniform. And the detected intensity can approach the inner products of the input images and the stored images. The computing speed of the correlator based on the current optoelectronic elements could be nearly two or three magnitude orders over the computing speed of traditional electronic processors. The applications of volume holographic correlator in the star field identification are demonstrated.

Abstract:A new type of deconvolver using a hybrid optical-electronic joint transform correlator is proposed. The inverse intensity filter used for deconvolution can be synthesized with this hybrid architecture in real time mode. A computer simulation is performed to demonstrate its capability to deconvolute the convolution of two functions.

Abstract:Volume holographic correlator allows simultaneously calculate the two-dimensional inner product between the input image and each stored image. We have recently experimentally implemented in VHC 4000 parallel correlation channels with better than 98% output accuracy in a single location in a crystal. The speckle modulation is used to suppress the sidelobes of the correlation patterns, allowing more correlation spots to be contained in the output plane. A modified exposure schedule is designed to ensure the hologram in each channel with unity diffraction efficiency. In this schedule, a restricted coefficient was introduced into the original exposure schedule to solve the problem that the sensitivity and time constant of the crystal will change as a time function when in high-capacity storage. An interleaving method is proposed to improve the output accuracy. By unifying the distribution of the input and stored image patterns without changing the inner products between them, this method could eliminate the impact of correlation pattern variety on calculated inner product values. Moreover, by using this method, the maximum correlation spot size is reduced, which decreases the required minimum safe clearance between neighboring spots in the output plane, allowing more spots to be parallely detected without crosstalk. The experimental results are given and analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper a novel method of realizing digital filters in an incoherent correlator is proposed. A gray-scale complementary encoding method is used to express the positive and negative numbers simultaneously so that the digital filtering will be simplified into a convolution of the encoding images and corresponding filter mask followed by a subtraction operation, which is easily done by optical method or computer. Based on the new method a compact incoherent optical digital filtering unit (IODFU) is built up. In the IODFU a SHARP QA-1200 8.4 inch active matrix TFT liquid crystal display panel is used for displaying the gray-scale images to be analyzed and the filter masks at the same time. The images and filters can be changed by computer-controlling for different destinations. The IODFU is very compact and the processing speed can get to 12 frames per second. At the end of this paper the experimental results are given.

Abstract:Optical correlators based on volume holographic associative storage and wavelet matched filtering generally have single input channel. In other words, they can only process one input image at a same time. Based on the fact that a volume holographic correlator is not a shift invariance system, novel volume holographic wavelet correlators with multi-input channels are proposed and constructed in this paper to improve the parallelism of processing. Without adding any component, the method of input plane shifting and the technique of angle multiplexing are combined besides the introduction of wavelet transform. With the correlators, several input images can be recognized simultaneously according to a same system output. Conditions of realizing multi-input channel processing are studied in this paper. The mechanism and prototype of the system are described in detail. The performance of the system in human face recognition is testified by experiment. Promising results are given.

Parallelism and Discrimination Enhancement of Volume Holographic Image Processing System

Abstract:A multichannel wavelet correlator is proposed and constructed in this paper, which is based on wavelet transform and mechanism of angle multiplexed volume holographic associative storage in a photorefractive crystal. Problems to enhance parallelism and discrimination of the volume holographic image processing system are studied. The cross-talk noise of the system is analyzed by simulation. Our results show that the cross-talk noise is significantly reduced with the wavelet filtering pre-processing. The correlation outputs can expand from one dimension in a conventional system to two dimensions in our system. Parallelism of the system is greatly enhanced. Wavelet transform has also the function of improving discrimination capability of the system. The conventional correlation is replaced by the correlation between main local features of the images extracted by a same desired wavelet filter, which provides a sharp peak with low sidelobes. Furthermore, other advantages of wavelet transform are introduced. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are given to support our conclusions.

Abstract:A read-only volume holographic correlator (VHC) is proposed. After the recording of all of the correlation database pages by angular multiplexing, a stand-alone read-only high accuracy VHC will be separated from the VHC recording facilities which include the high-power laser and the angular multiplexing system. The stand-alone VHC has its own low power readout laser and very compact and simple structure. Since there are two lasers that are employed for recording and readout, respectively, the optical alignment tolerance of the laser illumination on the SLM is very sensitive. The two-dimensional angular tolerance is analyzed based on the theoretical model of the volume holographic correlator. The experimental demonstration of the proposed read-only VHC is introduced and discussed.

Abstract:Novel planar folding optical correlator is proposed by means of micro-optical and binary optical techniques. The Fourier transform lenses, holographic matched filter, input plane and output plane are integrated on a common planar element. A reflective planar optical system is constructed by the correlator and a planar polarized mirror. The system structure and parameter design of this planar system are described, and a concrete model is proposed, with its volume reduced to about 12 cm3. At last, image recognition process of this correlator is simulated by using Fresnel diffractive method and gains excellent results, which proves the recognition capability of the system.

Abstract:A hybrid opto-electronic correlator for detecting defects in optical fibers is proposed. After the light from a He-Ne laser being expanded and filtered, it is not collimated but directly passes a Fourier transform lens and illuminates a fiber to be detected and a perfect fiber as reference one at the input plane. The Fourier transform spectrum of the fiber pair is obtained at the:rear focal plane of the lens, where it is sampled via a CCD array connected with a computer through a frame grabber. The computer performs filter, inverse Fourier transform and setting threshold operation on classification. Under specific conditions,:the system is an equivalent of joint transform correlator with a Fourier lens of long focal length. We analyze the conditions in terms of theory and show the experiment results corresponding to optical fibers having incoordinate defects. The results:indicate that the system can be used for fiber defects detection, and it has the advantages of high identification, compact configuration, easy adjustment and flexible manipulation.

Abstract:The concept of the associative storage in a photorefractive material offers suitable methods to design a multichannel correlator for image identification. Wavelet transform is introduced to improve recognition accuracy of the system, which provides a sharper peak and lower sidelobes than the conventional correlation. The recognition accuracy of the system is significantly affected by the choice of wavelet function and its parameters. A neural network is proposed to optimize parameters of the wavelet filters to improve recognition performance of the system. The object function for optimization is to maximize the difference of correlation outputs among different categories and minimize the variation of correlation outputs in a same category. Simulation and experimental results are given to testify the effect of optimization. Its application in human face recognition is studied. The results show that it is attractive to use neural network to refine parameters of filters.
