Abstract:Transformation into electric or photoelectric functional composite from non-conjugated polymers is a great challenge due to the presence of a large number of locative states. In this paper, carbon nanofiber was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose as a precursor, and the carbon nanofiber/Cu nanocomposite was constructed for defect passivation. The results indicated that the resulting nanocomposites exhibited good absorbance in visible light range and NIR (near-infrared). The photoconductive responses to typical weak visible light (650 nm et al.) and NIR (808, 980, and 1064 nm) were studied based on Au gap electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The results exhibited that the nanocomposite’s solid thick film showed photocurrent-switching behaviors to visible light and NIR, the switch-ratio was depending on the wavelengths and power of incident lights. The positive and negative photoconductance responses phenomenon was observed in different compositions and changing excited wavelengths. Their photophysical mechanisms were discussed. This illustrated that the nanocomposites easily produce free electrons and holes via low power of incident light. Free electrons and holes could be utilized for different purposes in multi-disciplinary fields. It would be a potential application in broadband flexible photodetectors, artificial vision, simulating retina, and bio-imaging from visible light to NIR. This is a low-cost and green approach to obtain nanocomposite exhibiting good photocurrent response from the visible range to NIR.

Abstract:Polyaniline/Au nanocomposites were synthesized by a novel method. Aniline monomers were loaded in the hydrophobic cavities of beta-cyclodextrin, and a polymerization reaction occurred at the interface of the beta-cyclodextrin cavities and the liquid phase of chloroauric acid. UV-vis absorbance indicated that the nanocomposite covered the range of visible light and NIR (near infrared). The photo-excitation experiment was carried out with typical wavelengths in the visible light (405 nm, 532 nm, and 650 nm) and NIR (780 nm, 808 nm, 980 nm, and 1064 nm) regions (10–200 mW) based on Au inter-digital electrodes on flexible polymer substrates casting a thick film. The nanocomposites exhibited photo-current switching behavior in visible light and NIR. The ratio of on/off was enormously dependent on the power and wavelength of incident light. The robust interface coupling between Au and PANi of the nanocomposite promoted the separation and transfer of electron/hole. The mechanism of carrier generation, separation, and transfer at interfaces of Au/conjugated polymer/non-conjugated small organic molecules by light inducement was discussed at the electron level. The results illustrate that the nanocomposites quickly produced free electrons and holes by low-power incident light, could prevent the recombination of electron/hole pairs to a certain extent, and could overcome the interface barriers between metal, conjugated polymer, and small organic molecules for transfer. This provides a simple and practical approach for developing multi-functional nanocomposites that have the potential act as intelligent nano-carriers, photo-current switches, NIR detectors, and for information storage.

Abstract:A molecular dispersed heterojunction solar cell consisting of a polymer and dye coated carbon nanotubes blend sandwiched between metal electrodes has been developed. The dye naphthalocyanine (NaPc) was used as the main sensitiser, while nanotubes and poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT) act as the electron acceptor and the electron donor, respectively. The incorporation of the NaPc in the P3OT/SWNT composite does dramatically increase the layer absorption resulting in a much higher photocurrent. We report on the exploration of new principles and concepts to develop molecular electronic devices for low cost solar cells.

Abstract:Single-bundle nanofiber based OFETs were fabricated from a cyclic conjugated organogelator, using a simple gelation method. The devices exhibited typical p-type semiconductor properties with dominant hole transport both in the dark and upon illumination under ambient conditions.

Abstract:A novel compound based on a glutamic acid skeleton, containing azobenzene as a photoresponsive group and ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) as a connection site, was designed and synthesized. The monomer is capable of forming an organogel in nonpolar organic solvents and different types of nanostructures in other solvents. The state of the gel and the chirality of the nanostructures could both be adjusted by subsequent light irradiation at different wavelengths. The helical nanofiber-like morphology was verified in the internal structure of the gel. The performance of this gel was investigated by a series of methods, such as UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy and rheological techniques. This work provides a new method for facile synthesis of chiro-optical gels.

Abstract:The helical nanofilament (HNF) liquid crystal phase is an ordered architecture exhibiting interesting properties for charge transport. It is a small molecule self-assembly of stacked and twisted crystalline layers, which form alignable organic nanorods with half the surface area of the filaments consisting of aromatic sublayer edges. HNFs mixed with an electron acceptor generate an intriguing network for photoinduced electron transfer (PET). In this work, we characterize the structure of the HNF phase as processed into thin films with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, we measure the flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) in samples where the HNF phase is fabricated into heterojunctions with the fullerenes C60 and PC60BM, prototypical electron acceptors for organic photovoltaics. Two distinct microstructures of the thin films were identified and compared for PET. A near-unity charge generation yield is observed in a bilayer of HNFs with C60. Moreover, the HNF phase is shown to be 10× better at charge generation than a lamellar structuring of the same components. Thus, the HNF phase is shown to be a good charge-generation interface.

Abstract:In this article, a dual‐function PANI‐based gel electrolyte is proposed for fiber‐shaped hybrid devices with a twisted structure and a simple fabrication strategy. By utilizing CNT as a porous layer and then ZnO nanowires as the electron transport layer on the anode electrode, the energy storage and photovoltaic performance are improved respectively. Summary Fiber‐shaped solar energy harvesting and storage devices are promising flexible hybrid systems for next‐generation wearable electronics. Here, three flexible fiber‐shaped hybrid devices were designed and fabricated by twisting two different conductive threads as electrodes and a photoactive polyaniline (PANI)‐based gel electrolyte. For two of the devices, conductive threads, one coated with Ag and another coated with carbon nanotube (CNT), were used as the anode electrodes with different work functions. In the third device, ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown on the CNT coated threads as the electron transport layer (ETL) on the anode. The highest capacitance was found to be 10.1 mF cm−1 (69.7 mF g−1) in device with the anode made of Ny66‐Ag/CNT, while a photovoltage of 37 mV was measured in the device with the ETL when exposed to light for 400 s. The current results provide a new design strategy with a flexible structure and simple fabrication process for the fiber‐shaped hybrid devices with the dual properties of energy harvesting and storage.

Abstract:This study presents synthesis and characterizations of two novel curved nanographenes that strongly bind with fullerene C60 to form photoconductive heterojunctions. Films of the self-assembled curved nanographene/fullerene complexes, which served as the photoconductive layer, generated a significant photocurrent under light irradiation. Gram-scale quantities of these curved nanographenes (TCR and HCR) as the "crown" sidewalls can be incorporated into a carbon nanoring to form molecular crowns, and the molecular structure of C60 @TCR is determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The UV/Vis absorption and emission spectra, and theoretical studies revealed their unique structural features and photophysical properties. Time-resolved spectroscopic results clearly suggest fast photoinduced electron transfer process in the supramolecular heterojunctions.

Abstract:A new fullerene self-assembled monolayer (SAM) which has the property of photoelectric conversion is reported here. The SAM was fabricated on hydrophilic substrates by an esterification reaction. The SAM is characterized by contact angle, AFM, UV spectrum, and cyclic voltammetry. Abstract:g-C3N4 (CN) has been widely explored as a visible light photocatalyst. Nevertheless, the low structural ordering of CN suffers from high-density defects that resulting in poor charge separation efficiency. Therefore, increasing the crystallinity of CN is considered to be an efficient approach to enhance its photocatalytic activity. However, crystalline g-C3N4 (CCN) synthesized via ionothermal method exhibits one-dimensional (1D) nanorod structure and is prone to agglomerate due to its high surface energy, giving rise to unsatisfactory performance improvement. Herein, the 1D carbon nanofibers/crystalline g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalyst (CNF/CCN) is obtained through electrostatic self-assembly combined with microwave heating strategy. The CNF/CCN sample shows an enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution rate (HER) of 6398 μmol g−1 h−1, which is up to 16.0 and 2.6 times of CN and CCN, respectively. The enhanced HER performance of CNF/CCN is attributed to the improved crystallinity of CN, promoted visible light utilization, large specific surface area and efficient charge transfer across the interface between CNF and CCN. This work conveys a simple and general method for crystallinity and activity enhancement for a wide range application of CN.

Abstract:We report an enhanced light-harvesting two-dimensional nanofluidic system based on a homogeneous graphene derivative nanocomposite membrane, and demonstrate an enhanced proton flow upon asymmetric light illumination. The maximum photocurrent is achieved by appropriately sandwiching graphene oxide quantum dots for adjusting the interlayer spacing of the membrane and reinforcing the membrane potential.

Abstract:Highly-ordered and well-aligned fullerene nanofibre arrays were fabricated via a nanotemplate preparation method and surface-wetting technique. The as-prepared fullerene nanofibre arrays were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and X-ray diffraction analysis. The dual-layered photoreceptors containing the fullerene nanofibre arrays or bulk fullerene films as the charge-generation layer (CGL) were fabricated. The photosensitivity of photoreceptors with fullerene nanoarrays as CGL was improved by one order of magnitude compared to that of their bulk films. The effect of the diameter and the length of the fullerene nanofibres on the photosensitivity of the photoreceptors was also investigated.

Abstract:In this article, we would like to demonstrate an electric field annealing method to assist the self-organization of a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) hybrid without any thermal post-treatment. By applying a DC electric field perpendicular to the substrate during the solvent-drying process, the formation of fibrous P3HT crystalline domains and phase-separated domains of bulk heterojunctions can be achieved, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 4%. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) measurement suggests that the electric field-assisted annealing will facilitate the crystallization of P3HT in both lamellar stacking and vertical stacking, as a result of improved carrier transport and photovoltaic performance. The method of electric field-assisted annealing can easily be integrated into large-area and low-temperature processes, providing a new route to fabricate low-cost and flexible polymer solar cells.

Abstract:The creation of artificial high-performance photosynthetic assemblies with a tailorable antenna system to deliver absorbed solar energy to a photosynthetic reaction center, thereby mimicking biological photosynthesis, remains a major challenge. We report the construction of recyclable, high-performance photosynthetic nanofibers with a crystalline pi-conjugated polyfluorene core as an antenna system that funnels absorbed solar energy to spatially defined sensitized Co(II) porphyrin photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Highly effective energy funneling was achieved by tuning the dimensions of the nanofibers to exploit the very long exciton diffusion lengths (>200 nm) associated with the highly crystalline polyfluorene core formed using the living crystallization-driven self-assembly seeded growth method. This enabled efficient solar light-driven hydrogen production from water with a turnover number of over 450 for 8 h of irradiation, an H-2 production rate of ca. 65 mmol h(-1) g(-1), and an overall quantum yield of 0.4% in the wavelength region (<405 nm) beyond the absorption of the molecular photocatalyst. The strategy of using a tailored antenna system based on pi-conjugated polymers and maximizing exciton transport to a reaction center reported in this work opens up future opportunities for potential applications in other fields such as solar overall water splitting, CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic small molecule synthesis.

Abstract:We propose a non-metallic g-C3N4 nanosheet with efficient photo-oxidation and reduction ability that is modified by two non-metallic materials graphene and polypyrrole. The composite was tested by water treatment, including hexavalent chromium and phenol. It offers a visible response, easy recovery, and high stability, with a higher photo-degradation rate than bulk g-C3N4. The photoelectric performance test showed that the composite has a reduced Eg (2.58 eV) that is 0.12 eV lower than g-C(3)N4 (2.70 eV). The rGH can transfer electrons, and ppy can transfer holes, which helps improve the separation rate of photogenerated charge of the g-C3N4. When ppy and rGH operate concurrently, the separation of the photogenerated charge is greatly improved. In addition, the results of Vb-XPS show that the value of the valence band top of the hybrid hydrogel is more negative than bulk g-C3N4. Therefore, the pi-pi conjugation of ppy and rGH can effectively improve the utilization rate of visible light, the photogenerated transfer rate, the photocatalysis-oxidation ability, and the change in valence band position of g-C3N4.

Abstract:Hybrid conjugated polymer/fullerene filaments based on MEH-PPV/PVP/PCBM are prepared by electrospinning, and their properties assessed by scanning electron, atomic and lateral force, tunnelling, and confocal microscopy, as well as by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence quantum yield and spatially-resolved fluorescence. Highlighted features include ribbon-shape of the realized fibers, and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in this way in terms of homogeneous charge transport behavior and formation of effective interfaces for diffusion and dissociation of photogenerated excitons. The interaction of the organic filaments with light, exhibiting specific light-scattering properties of the nanofibrous mat, might also contribute to spreading incident radiation across the active layers, thus potentially enhancing photovoltaic performance. This method might be applied to other electron donor-electron acceptor material systems for the fabrication of solar cell devices enhanced by nanofibrillar morphologies embedding conjugated polymers and fullerene compounds.

Abstract:Composite hydrogels of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) and polyacrylamide (PAM) with superior UV absorption and visible transparence capabilities are reported. CNNS is employed not only as a photocatalytic initiator to trigger the polymerization of acrylamide, but also as a cross-linker to 3D connected PAM chains via hydrogen bonds. The obtained CNNS/PAM hydrogels are highly moldable for preparing various forms, and have good mechanical properties, self-healing ability, and photo-stability. Furthermore, the composite hydrogels have a wide spectral range for UV absorption compared to conventional UV protective materials. Besides the complete screening of UVB (280-315 nm) in sun radiation, the CNNS/PAM hydrogel film can also filter >95% UVA radiation (315-400 nm) by regulating the coating thickness, meanwhile retaining a high visible transmittance. Therefore, the CNNS/PAM hydrogels have potential applications for shielding UV radiation. Additionally, this strategy provides a common and facile route to fabricate functional composite hydrogels via photo-induced polymerization.

Abstract:Gold/double-cable copolymer/gold multisegmented nanorods were prepared electrochemically via a template-based method. These "bulk heterojunction" nanorods showed photoconductivity providing us with a platform to study photoinduced charge separation/transport at the nanointerface and begin to think about the rational design of nanoscale solar cells based on such structures.
