Abstract:In this paper, we propose a single-fiber bi-directional burst-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to simultaneously improve upstream and downstream loss budget in time and wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (TWDM-PON). Instead of additional light sources for upstream gain clamping, the downstream signal acting as saturation signal effectively suppresses the upstream burst surge, which widens the input dynamic range of upstream burst signal. For potential reflections caused by the absence of optical isolators, experimental results have demonstrated the degradation of receiver sensitivity at bit-error rate of 1 × 10-3 is negligible with a reflection power up to -14 dBm, which proves the promising applications in PONs of the proposed single-fiber bi-directional burst-mode EDFA.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally investigate a simple self-injection Fabry-Perot laser scheme on each optical network unit (ONU) for 10 Gbps TDM passive optical networks (PONs). Based on the proposed four wavelength-multiplexed 2.5 Gbps lasers, the 10 Gbps uplink traffic can be achieved at a cost-effective way. The network architecture and performance have also been analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) laser.This scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:Time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) has been selected by full service access networks as a primary solution for next generation PON stage 2 in April 2012. In this letter, we propose and demonstrate a symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON with 39-dB power budget. A reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is used in optical network unit as a pre-amplifier to enhance the sensitivity of downstream signals. For the upstream direction, a thermally-tuned directly modulated laser with 10-Gb/s modulation rate is used as upstream colorless source, and a chirp management filter is employed in optical line terminal to mitigate chromatic dispersion therefore enabling fiber transmission. Symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated with a power budget of 39 dB, which could support 25-km fiber transmission and 1:1000 splitting ratio.

Abstract:Increasing the serial bitrate to 25-Gb/s per channel as well as coexisting with the same optical distribution network of the 10G-ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is challenging. The bandwidth limitation and the reduced dispersion tolerance at high date rate make it much more difficult to achieve higher loss budget. In this paper, we have first shown a demonstration of a symmetric 4 × 25-Gb/s time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying format supporting 0–20 km reach in O-band. 10G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters owing to the low cost and the frequency chirp induced by DML can be used for bandwidth equalization. Instead of using digital signal processing, the chirp management and frequency equalization are simultaneously realized in optical domain through our proposed dispersion supported equalization technique. By employing a spool of dispersion-shifted fiber in optical line terminal (OLT), a single device can be used to simultaneously equalize the frequency response of multiple downstream and upstream channels. Then, we further use a semiconductor optical amplifier as a booster and preamplifier at the OLT for downstream and upstream, respectively. A power budget of 26 and 32 dB with 0–20 km reach of standard single mode fiber for downstream and upstream transmission at 1310 nm is obtained. The experimental results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed cost-effective scheme would be a promising candidate for the next generation 100G-EPON.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 25-Gb/s downstream transmission of PON based on electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) and directly modulated laser (DML) both operating at 7-GHz. A 10-Gbps class avalanche photodiode (APD) is employed at the receiver. Adaptive feedforward equalizer (FFE) cooperating with faster-than-Nyquist NRZ (FTN-NRZ) technique, which includes FTN precoder and post decoder, are adopted to process the bandwidth limited signal. The experimental results indicate that pre-emphasis has a gain of 0.5 dB in EML based optical back-to-back transmission, and for 20-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) link, the receiver sensitivities of -28.4 dBm and -26.5 dBm are achieved for EML and DML, respectively. According to the experimental results, the FTN-NRZ technique shows its superiority in receiver sensitivity, which is an alternative of cost-effective solution for future 100Gb/s TWDM-PON.

Abstract:High speed data modulation based on bandwidth limited devices has been considered as a cost-effective way to upgrade 10G-EPON to the next generation 100G-EPON. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the modulation, fiber transmission and reception of 25-Gb/s signal based on directly modulated laser and photo-detector both operating at 10 GHz. Instead of digital signal processing, the chirp management, dispersion compensation and frequency equalization in our scheme are realized in optical domain using a single delay interferometer. Three popular formats are investigated, including NRZ-OOK, PAM-4 and duobinary. According to the experimental results, the NRZ-OOK format shows its superiority in both launch power and receiver sensitivity, which provides a cost-effective solution for the construction of 100-Gb/s TWDM-PON.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel design of a burst-mode transceiver with local real-time intelligence for point-to-multipoint upstream transmission at 155.52 Mb/s. Using embedded intelligence for controlling laser drive parameters, and a trailer canceling technique at a receiver, excellent combined performance of high sensitivity (-37 dBm at BER 10-9), large optical power budget (36 dB), wide dynamic range (33 dB), and short run-in time (26 ns) was successfully demonstrated. It can connect up to 32 subscribers through a passive optical tree network using a burst TDMA scheme.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a cost-effective point-to-multipoint solution to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic demands in the future optical access network. Recently, time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent PON have attracted increasing interest, due to its advantages of providing low latency access and flexible bandwidth allocation. One critical challenge for TFDM-PON system is the upstream burst-mode digital signal processing (DSP). DSP should converge fast in the specific time slot to ensure low latency for subcarrier allocation. The conventional subcarrier recognition and demultiplexing are realized in the frequency domain. The process of time-frequency conversion introduces extra computational complexity if the burst-mode DSP use time-domain algorithms. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a data-aided DSP scheme for burst-mode detection in coherent TFDM-PON. Subcarrier demultiplexing is implemented in the time domain by using coarse and fine filtering. Coarse and fine filtering are achieved by convolving the signal with finite impulse response (FIR) pulse-shaping filters. Least square (LS) algorithm is used for channel estimation achieving fast convergence. With a 79.36-ns training sequence, -37.5-dBm and -29-dBm sensitivities are achieved for QPSK and 16QAM signal-based 200G TFDM-PON with four subcarriers after 20-km fiber transmission.

Abstract:A truly passive long-reach, symmetric 40-Gb/s time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) with a high loss budget is demonstrated, using direct modulation and direct detection in both upstream and downstream directions. Thermally tuned directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters, not only owing to their low cost, but also, as a carrier-less modulation method, where the signal generated by direct modulation is demonstrated to be more robust to high launch power induced fiber nonlinearities compared with external intensity modulation formats with strong carrier power. Therefore, DML is suitable for applying in TWDM-PON to achieve a high loss budget. Moreover, the frequency chirp induced dispersion of directly-modulated signal is managed thanks to the combination of optical spectral reshaping and dispersion supported transmission effects, which makes it possible for the directly-modulated signal to reach a distance of 100 km and still with a good quality. As a result, a system loss budget of 53 dB is achieved, supporting more than 1000 users with 100-km purely passive reach, which is the first demonstration of high loss budget, long reach TWDM-PONs to our best knowledge.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated symmetric 40Gb/s TWDM-PON with long passive reach and high power budget. Directly-modulated lasers (DMLs) are used as both downstream and upstream lasers to reduce the system cost, and optical reshaping filter is used to manage the chirp of the DMLs for all the upstream and downstream channels, enabling long distance transmission without dispersion compensation. The power budget is as high as 43 dB for 100-km passive reach, supporting 64 users.

Abstract:As the demand for broadband applications continues rising, low cost and high capacity PON system has attracted more attention to keep up with the increasing demand in the future access network. Recently, the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group has already sponsored the discussion of next generation Ethernet passive optical network (NG-EPON) to provide 25-Gb/s per wavelength. In order to upgrade current 10-Gb/s PON to realize the capacity of 100 Gb/s PON with 25 Gb/s per wavelength, a variety of experimental demonstrations have shown the feasibility of 25-Gb/s per wavelength using the modulation schemes of four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), electrical duobinary (EDB), optical duobinary (ODB) or non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) for high speed transmission. In order to achieve higher performance, these transmission schemes are always combined with the advanced digital signal processing (DSP) which increases the technical complexity and the cost as well. Most of the previous demonstration are based on the off-line processing, therefore requires more time for the practical deployment. In this paper, we demonstrate the first field trial a real-time 100Gb/s TWDM-PON system with 4×25-Gb/s downstream and 4×10-Gb/s upstream transmission using 10G-class directly-modulated lasers (DMLs) and APD/PIN receivers. A single delay-interferometer (DI) is used to achieve frequency equalization as well as chirp management to increase the high frequency components of the system response and combat the chromatic dispersion (CD) during the fiber transmission. Note that there is no DSP applied for the whole system. Electrical clock/data recovery (CDR) chips are integrated on the main board for data generation, recovery and real-time bit error rate (BER) measurement. We obtained a power budget of 33 dB with 0-40km of standard single mode fiber based on NRZ-OOK modulation format for the downstream. The system stability is also verified using deployed 40-km fiber infrastructure over 67-hour real-time measurement.

Abstract:Next generation passive optical network (NG-PON), which aims at providing cost-effective solutions to the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of the end-customers with data rate of 100-Gb/s, is attracting more and more attentions. In this paper, a symmetric 100-Gb/s DSP-enhanced TWDM-PON architecture with four pairs of wavelengths is proposed. 4×25-Gb/s TWDM-OFDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated over 26.7 km fiber using double sideband (DSB) modulation. The employment of RSOA is also investigated to enhance the receiver sensitivity.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental demonstration of 100-Gbps timeand wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) with 4 × 25-Gbps downstream transmission. We take a comparison of faster-than-Nyquist nonreturn-to-zero (FTN-NRZ), four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), electrical duobinary (EDB), and optical duobinary (ODB) on the same transmission link. The use of low-cost 10-Gbps optics in combination with digital signal processing (DSP) makes it feasible for a 25-Gb/s per wavelength transmission over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) in a cost-effective way. The spectra efficiency and ISI robustness by going to the higher rate are analyzed theoretically. We achieve link budgets of 33.18 dB for FTN-NRZ, and less than 30 dB budgets for PAM-4, ODB, and EDB in downstream transmission. FTN combination with feedforward equalization (FFE) allows FTN-NRZ to have a 4.18 dB margin in power requirement of PR(x) 30 of 10G-EPON, whereas PAM-4 and ODB with FFE also meet PR(x) 30 with 0.25 dB margin. The results indicate that FTN-NRZ, PAM-4, and ODB can be used for 100G-EPON with 10-Gbps optics, and FTN-NRZ has better performance than other modulations, which is more suitable for next-generation 100G-EPON transmission technique with low cost.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to use a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in the optical network unit (ONU) to improve the loss budget in time and wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (TWDM-PON) systems. The SOA boosts the upstream signal to increase the output power of the electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) and simultaneously pre-amplifies the downstream signal for sensitivity improvement. The penalty caused by cross gain modulation (XGM) effect is negligible due to the low extinction ratio (ER) of upstream signal and the large wavelength difference between upstream and downstream links. In order to achieve a higher output power, the SOA is driven into its saturation region, where the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect converts the intensity into phase information and realizes on-off-keying (OOK) to phase-shifted-keying (PSK) format conversion. In this way, the pattern effect is eliminated, which releases the requirement of gain-clamping on SOA. To further improve the loss budget of upstream link, an Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used in the optical line terminal (OLT) to pre-amplify the received signal. For the downstream direction, directly modulated laser (DML) is used as the laser source. Taking advantage of its carrier-less characteristic, directly modulated signal shows high tolerance to fiber nonlinearity, which could support a downstream launch power as high as + 16 dBm per channel. In addition, the signal is pre-amplified by the SOA in ONU before being detected, so the sensitivity limitation for downstream link is also removed. As a result, a truly passive symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON was demonstrated, achieving a link loss budget of 51 dB.

Abstract:A 10 Gbit/s 16-km-long reconfigurable wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is presented empowered by a low-cost multi-channel directly modulated laser (DML) module. Compared with the case using discrete devices in conventional scheme, the proposed DML module provides a cost-effective solution with reduced complexity. The clear eye diagram and the bit error rate ( BER ) of less than 2×10 -7 with a sensitivity of −7 dBm are obtained. Due to the special packaging design, the crosstalk between channels under condition of simultaneous operation can be negligible.
