Abstract:We report improved electric breakdown strength, high energy density, and low dielectric loss of nanocomposites using surface modified BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles filling in poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer matrix. Dielectric and electric breakdown properties of the nanocomposites have been investigated as a function of BT content. The electric breakdown strength of 285 MV/ m has been achieved at the nanocomposite with 10 vol.% BT nanoparticles. The results indicate that functionalized and produced passivation layers on the surface of ceramic fillers can improve the homogeneity of the nanocomposites, promote space charge and interface effects, and significantly enhance electric breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. Abstract:Sandwich-structured BaTiO3/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites are successfully prepared by the solution-casting method layer by layer. They possess both high breakdown strength and large dielectric polarization simultaneously. An ultra-high energy-storage density of 18.8 J cm(-3) can be achieved by adjusting the volume fraction of ceramic fillers: this is almost three times larger than that of pure PVDF.

Abstract:Surface modification on ceramic fillers is of interest to help improve their compatibility in ceramic/polymer nanocomposites and, if possible, to control the influence of modifiers on the performance of the nanocomposites. In this paper, four kinds of small-molecule modifiers were chosen to treat the surface of BT nanoparticles, and the PVDF-based nanocomposites filled with the modified BT nanoparticles were prepared. The influences of modifiers on compatibility, permittivity, breakdown strength and polarization have been systematically investigated in order to identify the optimal surface modifier to enhance the energy density of the nanocomposites. Due to different structures (including type, number, and position of functional groups in molecules), the modifiers show different effects on the permittivity of the nanocomposites, while the breakdown strengths are all significantly improved. Consequently, the discharged energy densities of nanocomposites modified by 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid and phthalic acid increase 35.7% and 37.7%, respectively, compared to BT/PVDF, indicating their potential as high energy density capacitors.

Abstract:We report nanocomposites of increased dielectric permittivity, enhanced electric breakdown strength and high-energy density based on surface-modified BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles filled poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer. Polyvinylprrolidone (PVP) is used as the surface modification agent and homogeneous nanocomposite films have been prepared by solution casting processing. The dielectric permittivity of the nanocomposite with treated BT is higher than those with untreated BT and reaches the maximum value of 77 (1kHz) at BT concentration of 55vol%. The electric breakdown strength of the nanocomposite is greatly enhanced to 336MV/m at BT concentration of 10vol% and the calculated energy density is 6.8J/cm(3). The results indicate that using PVP as surface modification agent can greatly enhance the dielectric permittivity and electric breakdown strength of the ceramic-polymer nanocomposite and achieve high-energy density for energy storage and power capacitor applications.

Abstract:The combination of nanoparticles with high relative permittivity and polymers with high dielectric strength offers a potential to obtain processable nanocomposites with high dielectric performance. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-barium titanate (BT) nanocomposites were prepared by spin-coating technique. The surface of BT nanoparticles was treated by titanate coupling agent NDZ101. The dielectric and energy storage properties of the system were studied as a function of BT content. The experimental results showed that the dielectric constant of the nanocomposites increased with the increase of BT content. Although pure PVDF material has the strongest dielectric breakdown strength, the discharged energy storage density Ue of the nanocomposites was greatly improved from 2.8 J/cm(3) in pure PVDF film to 6.2 J/cm(3) in PVDF/20 wt% BT film; due to larger polarization of the nanocomposite.

Abstract:Ceramic-polymer composites have attracted extensive attention in electrical applications due to their high permittivity and low loss. In this work, we report the studies on the preparation and properties of barium titanate (BT)/poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) composite thin films. The composite film was prepared by a modified process rather than the conventional method. The modified process adopted ballmilling technique instead of the stirring method to disperse BT nanoparticles into PVDF solution. Scanning electron microscopy images of the obtained composites show that the BT nanoparticles are incorporated into the PVDF network and are well dispersed in the matrix. When the BT volume fraction is 30%, the permittivity and breakdown strength of the composites reach their optimal values and the energy density reaches maximum value (5.3 J/cm3), an increase of 80% compared with that of the composites prepared using the stirring method. Another modification is the use of acetone and butanone mixed solution instead of N,N-dimethylformamide to dissolve the PVDF, which is beneficial to form pure α-PVDF composite films on the polyethylene terephthalate substrate by tape casting. The composites prepared by the modified process, with high permittivity and significantly enhanced breakdown strength, are useful candidates for energy storage applications.
Reinforced energy storage performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) composite films by filling with surface fluorinated one-dimensional barium titanate nanofibers

Abstract:One-dimensional barium titanate nanofibers/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite films were prepared by casting technology. To improve the dispersion of nanofibers in the PVDF matrix and enhance the interface bonding between nanofibers and the PVDF matrix, surface modification of nanofibers was obtained by fluorination treatment. Experimental and theoretical simulation studies were conducted to investigate the effects of surface fluorination-modified one-dimensional barium titanate nanofibers on the micro morphology, structure, dielectric constant, and energy storage density of PVDF composite films. The results showed that the barium titanate powder synthesized by electrospinning had a good one-dimensional fiber morphology, with a diameter of 70–130 nm and a length of 4–15 μm. The surface fluorination treatment was able to significantly improve the dispersion and bonding of the one-dimensional barium titanate nanofiber in the PVDF matrix. As the filling volume of the one-dimensional nanofibers increased, the dielectric constant of the PVDF composite film significantly increased. When the filling volume of the surface fluorinated one-dimensional barium titanate nanofiber was 7.5 vol%, the room temperature dielectric constant of the PVDF composite film reached 21.8, and the surface fluorinated one-dimensional barium titanate nanofiber/PVDF composite film exhibited lower dielectric loss and high breakdown strength. When the filling volume of the surface fluorinated one-dimensional barium titanate nanofiber was 2.5 vol%, the energy storage density of the PVDF composite film was 7.9 J/cm 3 , which was 2.82 times that of pure PVDF. The improvement of energy storage performance can be attributed to the good dispersion of the surface fluorinated barium titanate nanofibers in the PVDF matrix and the good interface situation. Finite element simulation further revealed that the surface fluorinated one-dimensional nanofibers could effectively improve the breakdown strength of the composites. That provides a promising way to enhance the dispersion and interface bonding of filler in polymer matrices, thereby achieving high-performance composites with high dielectric constant, high breakdown strength, and excellent energy storage density.

Abstract:Barium titanate@silicon dioxide (BT@SiO2) core@shell fillers with an average diameter of 100 nm were prepared by a facile sol gel synthesis. The thickness of SiO2 shell can be easily tuned by varying different mass ratio of BT to tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based composite films reinforced by BT and BT@SiO2 were fabricated via a solution casting method. The effects of SiO2 shell on morphology structure, wettability, interfacial adhesion, dielectric, electrical and energy performances of composites were investigated. Compared with BT/PVDF, BT@SiO2/PVDF composites show significantly increased breakdown strength due to enhanced interfacial adhesion and suppressed charge carrier conduction. Benefiting from enhanced breakdown strength and reduced remnant polarization induced by SiO2 shell, BT@SiO2/INDF shows increased release energy density (energy density which can be fully discharged and applicable). Especially, BT@SiO2/PVDF with SiO2 thickness of 4 nm exhibits the highest release energy density of 1.08 J/cm(3) under applied electric field of 145 kV/mm. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanocomposite polymer materials are commonly used in energy storage devices on account of the excellent dielectric performance. However, there is a long-standing contradiction between dielectric constant and breakdown strength of nanocomposite. In this study, polyurea (PUA) is designed to in situ modify BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles. Based on the excellent dispersity, favorable compatibility and outstanding insulating performance of BT@PUA particles, the P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@PUA nanocomposite exhibits enhanced breakdown strength and reliability. In addition, the introduction of BT@PUA enhanced the dielectric constant to 10.72 and 35% larger than that of pure P(VDF-CTFE). As a result, the energy density of BT@PUA composite reaches 8.94 J/cm 3 , which is 1.65 times than P(VDF-CTFE) (5.41 J/cm 3 ) and 4.5 times than the commercial biaxially oriented polypropylenes. Meanwhile, the quantified simulation illustrates the necessity of extremely high breakdown strength of the shell. Experiment results and simulation reveal that coating PUA is a novel and effective way to enhance energy storage performance for polymer nanocomposites with a promising broad application prospect.
High energy density nanocomposites based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) and barium titanate

Abstract:Three series of poly (vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene)/barium titanate (BT) nanocomposites with varied compositions were fabricated via solution cast process followed by thermally treated in different ways. Quenching the composite samples at lower temperature could effectively enhance their dielectric constant, breakdown strength as well as the energy density. The highest energy density (13.6 J/cm3) is observed in the sample quenched from 200 degrees C to 94 degrees C with 5 vol% BT, which is much higher than nanocomposites reported in the current literature. The addition of ceramic particles leads to the improvement of dielectric permittivity and energy density measured under the same electric field. However, the dielectric breakdown strength and the energy density measured at breakdown strength of the resultant composites are reduced as a function of BT content. The fixed maximum electric displacement and reduction of saturation electric field suggest that the addition of ceramic particles with high dielectric constant may help increase the energy density of composites under low electric field but not for high electric field. Abstract:Surface modification on nanoparticle fillers with organic groups is important to improve the performance of ceramic/ polymer nanocomposites. Due to the small coverage level of carboxylic acids on the nanoparticle surface, studies on the use of carboxylic acids as a surface modifier for ceramic nanoparticles have been rarely reported. However, there is no study that proves that a small amount of modifier on the surface of nanoparticles cannot adequately improve the dispersion as well as the compatibility of nanoparticles with the matrix. Herein, we used three carboxylic acids to treat the surface of BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles and adjusted the coverage level of the modifiers on the surface of BT nanoparticles through different ways. The nanocomposite films synthesized from the modified BT nanoparticles dispersed in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer matrix were analyzed by dielectric spectroscopy, breakdown strength, leakage currents, and D-E loop measurements. The results show that the molecule dipole moment and polarizability of the modifier greatly influence the permittivity of the nanocomposites as the surface coverage level of the modifiers increases. Due to many influential factors, changes in the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites show diversity for three modifiers as the modifier content increases. For the nanocomposites applied in energy storage, the optimal content of the modifier on the surface of the nanoparticles needs to be determined by combining various properties of the nanocomposites.
Improving Dielectric Properties of BaTiO3/poly(vinylidene Fluoride) Composites by Employing Core-Shell Structured BaTiO3@Poly(methylmethacrylate) and BaTiO3@Poly(trifluoroethyl Methacrylate) Nanoparticles

Abstract:Polymer based dielectric composites were fabricated through incorporation of core-shell structured BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles into PVDF matrix by means of solution blending. Core-shell structured BT nanoparticles with different shell composition and shell thickness were prepared by grafting methacrylate monomer (MMA or TFEMA) onto the surface of BT nanoparticles via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The content of the grafted polymer and the micro-morphology of the core-shell structured BT nanoparticles were investigated by thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The dielectric properties were measured by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The results showed that high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss are successfully realized in the polymer based composites. Moreover, the type of the grafted polymer and its content had different effect on the dielectric constant. In detail, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 16.6% for BT@PMMAI/PVDF and 10.7% for BT@PMMA2/PVDF composite in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz, in which the grafted content of PMMA was 5.5% and 8.0%, respectively. However, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 5.5% for BT@PTFEMA1/13VDF and 4.0% for BT@PTFEMA2/PVDF composite, in which the grafted content of PTFEMA was 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively. These attractive features of BT@PTFEMA/PVDF composites suggested that dielectric ceramic fillers modified with fluorinated polymer can be used to prepare high performance composites, especially those with low dielectric loss and high dielectric constant. Abstract:Defect-modified copolymer P (VDF-CTFE) has a high dipole density and breakdown field, and BaTiO3 (BT) has a high dielectric constants. Both their characteristics can be achieved in P(VDF-CTFE)/BT composites. The powders of BaTiO3 was manufactured by sol-gel methods and coupled in KH550. The composites which is compounded from P(VDF-CTFE) and BT exhibit high breakdown field(300 MV/m), high electric displacement(D 0.15 C/m2) and low dielectric loss. The results indicate that these composites are the potential materials for high energy density capacitors.
Large Enhancement in Polarization Response and Energy Storage Properties of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) by Improving the Interface Effect in Nanocomposites

Abstract:A novel strategy to improve the interface effect of BaTiO3 (BT)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites is developed to achieve high energy density. The surface of BT is first hydroxylated by H2O2, then modified with a titanate coupling agent DN-101. BT modified with DN-101 is also considered as a control group. Results show that the polarization response of nanocomposites with 10 vol % H2O2-DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-h-BT) is largely enhanced, which is 18% bigger than that of the nanocomposites with 10 vol % DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-BT) at 240 MV m(-1). The dielectric breakdown strength is also improved from 240 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-BT to 260 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-h-BT, which makes the maximum stored energy density increase from 6.5 to 9.01 J cm(-3), and the discharged energy density of the composites improved from 3.01 to 4.31 J cm(-3). The findings based on this research are applicable to various nanofillers and polymer matrix, which provides a simple but effective way for nanocomposites with enhanced dielectric properties in next-generation electric and electronic industry.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of surface modification on the dielectric properties of 0-3 barium titanate/polypropylene (BT/PP) nanocomposites is investigated. Sodium oleate (SOA) modified BT nanoparticles (BT-SOA) were successfully prepared and the thickness of SOA layer was measured to be 2 nm. BT/PP and BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites, containing filler loadings from 0 to 20 volume percent, were fabricated by using a melt blending progress. Compared with BT/PP nanocomposites, the compatibility between BT-SOA and PP matrix in BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites was improved, so that BT-SOA/PP exhibited lower dielectric loss and higher breakdown strength. In light of these improved dielectric properties, the BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites are attractive nanodielectrics for high energy density storage applications.

Abstract:The plate-like Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 (P-NBT4) particles were synthesized by molten salt method and dispersed in a poly (vinylindene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The alignment of P-NBT4 particles in PVDF matrix perpendicular to the direction of applied electric field could bring to impressive dielectric performance and breakdown strength to the composites. On the one hand, the excellent dielectric property of the P-NBT4/PVDF composites is ascribed to the high capacitance that is consist of P-NBT4 particles micro-capacitances. On the other hand, a higher breakdown strength of the P-NBT4/PVDF composites is owing to that strong barrier layer was formed in the composites by P-NBT4 particles alignment, which bring difficulty to form a conductive pathway. Moreover, the textured P-NBT4/PVDF composites exhibit a high energy density (9.45 J/cm(3)) and energy efficiency (eta) of 52.28% under the critical electric field of 300 kV/mm.

Abstract:Flexible polymer composite films are prepared by a solution cast method with polar polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or non-polar epoxy as the polymer matrix. BaTiO3 nanoparticles and BaTiO3 nanofibers with large aspect ratio are used as dielectric fillers after surface modification by polydopamine. The effects of filler shape, surface modification and polarity of polymer matrix on the microstructure, dielectric constants and breakdown strength of polymer composites are investigated in detail. Surface modification by polydopamine improves the compatibility between BaTiO3 and polymer as well as passivating the surfaces of BaTiO3. At the same volume fraction, composites filled with BaTiO3 nanofibers exhibit greater dielectric constants than the composites filled with BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The polydopamine layers on BaTiO3 nanofibers give rise to stronger interfaces between the fillers and polymer matrices. Improved breakdown strengths are achieved in both composites. This work may provide a general strategy for flexible polymer nanocomposites with greatly enhanced dielectric constants and breakdown strength.

Abstract:In this study, crystallization behavior and micromorphology of barium titanate (BaTiO3, or BT) filled poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were investigated based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). BT/PVDF nanocomposite films with different concentrations of BT nanoparticles were prepared by solution casting method. The results revealed that the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of PVDF were improved by the incorporation BT nanoparticles. When 2 wt % of BT was loaded into the PVDF matrix, it mediated the beta-phase crystallization in PVDF. Furthermore, the beta-phase crystals could be transformed into alpha-phase after the samples were isothermally crystallized at 155 degrees C for 20 min. The results of DSC and POM suggest that BT nanoparticles could act as nucleation agents, promoting the crystallization activity of PVDF in a nonisothermal crystallization process. The crystal phase is influential to the electrical properties of PVDF, therefore the findings of this study are useful for the development of new applications based on BT/PVDF nanocomposites, such as high-performance thermoelectric devices or systems. Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with the dielectric constant comparable to that of percolative composites are successfully prepared by using core-shell structured hyperbranched aromatic polyamide grafted barium titanate (BT-HBP) hybrid nanofiller. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE-CFE) was used as the polymer matrix because of its high intrinsic dielectric constant and easy processability. The BT-HBP hybrid nanofiller were prepared by a solution polymerization of diaminobenzoic acid on the surface of amino-funcationalized BT nanoparticles. Nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to verify the chemical structure of the hyperbranched aromatic polyamide and core-shell structure of the hybrid filler, respectively. It was found that the nanocomposite with 40 vol % BaTiO3-HBP had a dielectric constant of 1485.5 at 1000 Hz, whereas the corresponding nanocomposite sample with untreated BaTiO3 only showed a dielectric constant of 206.3. Compared with classic percolative composites, the advantage of the PVDF-TrFE-CFE/BaTiO3-HBP nanocomposites is that the composites show high enough breakdown strength and high dielectric constant simultaneously. An enhanced interfacial polarization mechanism between the BT-HBP and the polymer matrix was suggested for understanding the observed unusually high dielectric constant.

Abstract:Atomic-scale interface engineering in BaTiO3@TO2 nanofibers (TiO2 nano-fibers embedded with BaTiO3 nano-particles) leads to concurrent enhancement of electric displacement and breakdown strength in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. An ultrahigh energy density of ≈20 J cm(-3) is achieved with only 3 vol% nanofibers, which is by far the highest discharged energy density of PVDF-based nanocomposites.
