Abstract:We investigate all-optical switching in a multi-quantum-well semiconductor optical amplifier-based nonlinear polarization switch using optical pulses with duration of 200 fs at a central wavelength of 1520 nm. We show full recovery of the switch within 600 fs, in both the gain and absorption regime. We discuss the switching and recovery mechanisms using numerical simulations that are in qualitatively good agreement with our experimental data.

Abstract:We present an experimental and numerical investigation on phase dynamics in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The experiment for measuring the phase recovery is carried out using an integrated SOA-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer switch, under the injection of 2 ps optical pump pulses at 10 GHz. The phase recovery is derived from the measured output of the interferometer. Ultrafast component in the phase recovery is observed, and a delay between phase and gain recovery is also found. The impact of the different carrier dynamics on phase and gain recovery is analyzed by using a field propagation numerical model. The results are important for SOA-based ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:A method for all-optical frequency multiplication/recovery based on the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) ring cavity with the interference is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. This technique can be used to generate low clock amplitude jitter and input polarization independent pulse trains with the repetition rates of 5-25 GHz from 2.5 GHz driving pulse. Bias current of SOA effect on the amplitude of the output pulse train is great, and there is an optimized bias current of SOA for the base frequency of the 2.5 GHz and 10 GHz, respectively. In addition, this scheme can be applied to the extraction of the clock signal from a pseudorandom bit sequence signal.

Abstract:All-optical turbo-switches based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) effectively increase the switching speed via shortening the overall recovery time of the carriers. The device is numerically simulated by time-domain and frequency-domain SOA models in order to understand its operation principle and the ultimate operation speed. An integrated turbo-switch is also proposed, where a phase adjustable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is applied as an optical band-pass filter between two cascaded SOAs. Initial wavelength conversion was first demonstrated using the integrated turbo-switch at 42.4 Gbit/s.

Abstract:All-optical logic gate and switch are the key elements for ultrafast (>100 Gbit/s) signal processing in highspeed optical networks. Recent progress and related patents on all-optical logic gates based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are reviewed and optical switches with various configurations are discussed. The frequency-domain analysis of the turbo-switch (TS) incorporating two cascading SOAs is presented in detail to explore its ultimate operation bandwidth. The results show that the 3dB bandwidth of the TS is ~300 GHz, which can be a good candidate for ultrafast all-optical switches. Abstract:All-optical high-speed turbo-switches can effectively increase the switching speed using cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The overall recovery time or the bandwidth of turbo-switch was numerically analyzed with time-domain and frequency-domain SOA models. The turbo-switch was explored from the fundamental carrier dynamics in SOAs for the purpose of further increasing its operation speed. An integrated turbo-switch was also been proposed and demonstrated, where a phase adjustable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) was applied as an optical band-pass filter between SOAs. Wavelength conversion was first demonstrated at 84.8 Gbit/s using the integrated turbo-switch.

Abstract:A detailed theoretical model is proposed to simulate the turbo-switch incorporating two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The model takes into account various important physical effects including interband and intraband carrier transitions along with gain dispersion, and bidirectional amplified spontaneous emission. The simulation results are in excellent agreement with the reported experimental measurements. Moreover, simulations of turbo-switch are extended to explain the 160 Gb/s wavelength conversion, pattern effect mitigation, and switch structure optimization. Novel turbo-switch schemes are suggested to further improve the switching speed.

Abstract:An all-optical logical AND gate at 10 Gbit/s based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) in two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is demonstrated. Single-port-coupled SOAs are employed and specially designed to improve the output extinction ratio as well as the output performance of the logic operation. Abstract:We present the investigation results on the nonlinear phase and chirp dynamics in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). Time-resolved gain and phase dynamics of a quantum well SOA are measured using 2 ps pump pulses into an integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer switch under a co-propagation arrangement. Ultrafast component in the phase recovery is clearly observed. We explain the ultrafast phase dynamic by using a field propagation numerical model that includes the impact of sub-picosecond intra-band effects of the SOA. In addition, we investigate the chirp properties of the SOA in all-optical switches, and analyze the influences of chirp dynamics upon the detuned-filtering-based optical switches that extract the ultrafast chirp component to realize more than 160 Gbit/s optical switching. The results are very useful for SOA-based ultrafast optical signal processing in photonic networks.

Recent Patents on Electrical Engineeringe

Abstract:Recent patents and progress on all-optical wavelength converters (WCs) based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are reviewed. Differential schemes utilizing the nonlinear optical effects of SOAs in the configurations such as the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), the delayed-interference signal-wavelength converter (DISC), detuned narrow filter and novel turbo-switch structure are discussed and compared, which overcome the limitation of operation speed of WCs due to the SOA recovery time(~100 ps). It is shown that, by using the chirp effect or turbo-switch schemes, the WCs can be operated at the range of 160-320Gb/s, which will be good candidates for the applications in the next generation all-optical fiber networks. Abstract:The input power dynamic range and switching speed of an optical switch matrix based on cascaded semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gates with holding-light injection were studied numerically using the carrier-density rate equation of the SOA and a dynamic bit-error-rate calculation method. It is shown that holding-light injection can effectively extend the input power dynamic range to high signal input powers, on account of the suppression of the patterning effect in the presence of holding light. Moreover, cascaded SOA gates tend to provide a more linear output-input relation with holding-light injection. A useful by-product of holding-light injection is the enhanced switching speed of the SOA. The switch-on time with holding light is always shorter than that without, owing to a shorter carrier lifetime in the presence of holding light. Abstract:We propose a detailed frequency-domain model of the all-optical turbo-switch incorporating two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) with a broad band-pass optical filter in between the SOAs. The frequency-domain SOA model has taken the spatial inhomogeneity of the saturated SOA gain associated with the pump optical field into consideration for the first time. The simulations based on the model have been presented to understand the reason of the bandwidth enhancement and to predict the 3-dB bandwidth of frequency response of the turbo-switch. With the optimization of the optical powers, waveguide loss and a delayed-interferometer, the 3-dB bandwidth of turbo-switch can reach up to 270 GHz.
Investigation of Patterning Effects in Ultrafast SOA-Based Optical Switches

Abstract:Ultrafast optical switching employing semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based optical switches has been demonstrated at bitrates up to 640 Gbit/s. However, patterning effects caused by relatively slow recovery processes in semiconductor structures remain as an important deteriorating factor that limits the ultimate speed at which SOA-based switches can be operated. In this paper, we investigate the patterning effects of SOA-based switches using a systematic approach. A simple condition for the lower bound limit of the bit pattern length that should be adopted in the performance evaluations of the switches is derived. It is shown that the minimum bit pattern length scales linearly with the bitrate and the recovery time of the SOA. To overcome the excessive computation time needed for numerical analysis at long pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) lengths, an effective method, i.e., periodic method, has been proposed based on the idea of driving the SOA at two saturation extremes by two periodic pulse trains. The predictive power of the periodic method is verified by comparing its results with those obtained by using ordinary PRBS patterns. Finally, the effectiveness of the periodic method is exploited by analyzing in detail the performance properties of a specific type of switch over large parameter regions. Besides allowing an investigation of patterning effects, the periodic method also simultaneously provides such figures of merit as output power and pulsewidth.
