Abstract:A series of basicity-tunable ionic liquids with carboxylate and sulfonate anion were designed, prepared, and applied in NO capture. Both high absorption capacity and low desorption residue were achieved through tuning the basicity of the anion, leading to a superhigh working capacity of more than 6 mol per mol ionic liquid, which is superior to that of traditional absorbents. Through a combination of absorption experiments, quantum chemical calculations, and spectroscopic investigations, the results indicated that such a high absorption capacity was originated from multiple sites interaction between oxygen atoms of carboxylate or sulfonate anion and NO, while the reduced interaction induced by the decreased basicity of the O-site ionic liquid led to excellent desorption. We show that the highly efficient and reversible NO capture by these tunable ionic liquids provides a new strategy for improving gas capture and utilization, which is also important for some other fields such as material, biology, and medicine.

Abstract:A novel method for highly efficient nitric oxide absorption by azole-based ionic liquid was reported. The NO absorption capacity reached up to 4.52 mol per mol ionic liquid and is significant higher than the capacity other traditional absorbents. Moreover, the absorption of NO by this ionic liquid was reversible. Through a combination of experimental absorption, quantum chemical calculation, NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic investigation, the results indicated that such high capacity originated from multiple-site interactions between NO and the anion through the formation of NONOate with the chemical formula R1 R2 N-(NO- )-N=O, where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups. We believe that this highly efficient and reversible NO absorption by an azole-based ionic liquid paves a new way for gas capture and utilization.

Abstract:A novel method of using anion-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) with high NO absorption capacity and reversibility for the capture and in situ oxidation of low-concentration NO was established. For the mixed gas containing 0.25% NO, the accumulation rate of nitric acid in these ILs was significantly higher than that in the conventional ILs; after absorption and oxidation reached equilibrium, the molar ratio of HNO3 to [P-4446][PhSO3] was 0.86, which was 5 times as high as that of the conventional IL. Therefore, the problems of low efficiency and poor reversibility of traditional ILs in the absorption and oxidation process were solved. Through absorption and oxidation experiments, quantum chemical calculation, NMR, and time-resolved in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopic investigation, the results demonstrated that such a high accumulation rate of HNO3 originated from high uptake of NO through multiple-site interaction. Moreover, high reversibility is attributed to low volatility of conjugated acid of anions and decreased basicity of O sites on anions. We believe that such highly efficient and reversible conversion of low-concentration NO to HNO3 by ILs provides a new strategy for improving atomic economy of fossil fuel combustion, that is, converting post-combustion pollutants to good valuable chemicals.
Enhancement of NOx adsorption performance on zeolite via a facile modification strategy

Abstract:Adsorption is a promising technology for simultaneously capturing nitrogen oxides (NOx) from flue gases and recycling NO2 as a profitable chemical, for which a robust and efficient adsorbent provides the key step for success in practical applications. This work reports the enhancement of NOx adsorption performances with less cost of desorption energy on Cu-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared by a facile and rapid (690 s) modification method, the incipient-wetness impregnation coupled with microwave drying (IM). In comparisons to H-ZSM-5, Na-ZSM-5 and conventionally liquid-phase ion-exchanged counterparts under sub-1000 ppm NOx feed concentrations and room temperature, the IM sample renders a record NOx adsorption capacity (qt,NOx) of 0.878 mmol/g from dry gas stream on zeolites, and an applicable qt,NOx of 0.1 mmol/g from wet gas stream with a proper copper loading (2.1 wt%). The temperature programmed desorption of NOx on the optimal IM sample saturated with NOx from wet gas stream exhibit primary peak temperature lower than reported Cu-ZSM-5 and significant NO2 proportion (72.6 %) in desorbed NOx. Deeper insights into advantageous NOx oxidative adsorption over the properly-loaded Cu-ZSM-5 in terms of diverse adsorbate states and competitiveness towards H2O were gained, showing IM method a promising sorbent improvement strategy for practical use.

Abstract:This work is focused on the possible capture of nitrous oxide and more precisely protoxide using ionic liquids (ILs). ILs are gaining special attention since the efficiency of many processes can be enhanced by the judicious manipulation of their properties. The absorption of greenhouse gases can be enhanced by the basic character of the IL. In this work, these characteristics are evaluated through the study of the gas-liquid equilibrium of five imidazolium-based ILs: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF(4)]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([BMIM][SCN]), 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylphosphonate ([DMIM][MP]), 1,3-diethoxyimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(ETO)(2)IM][Tf(2)N]), and 1,3-dihydroxyimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(OH)(2)IM][Tf(2)N]) with N(2)O at temperatures up to 373 K and pressures up to 300 bar. Experimental data indicate that 44-105 g of N(2)O can be absorbed per kilograms of IL.

Abstract:A synchronous strategy for improving the absorption/desorption to achieve highly efficient nitric oxide (NO) capture is proposed by the use of tetrakis(azolyl)borate ionic liquid (IL) [P-66614] [B(Im)(4)] with multiple nonconjugated interaction sites. This IL exhibited an ultrahigh absorption capacity up to 8.13 mol of NO per mol of IL, good desorption, and excellent reversibility. Through a combination of absorption experiments, DFT calculations, and FT-IR and NMR characterizations, the results indicate that the ultrahigh NO capacity by [P-66614] [B(Im)(4)] originated from multiple-sites chemisorption through the formation of diazeniumdiolates (NONOates), while uniform interaction of multiple nonconjugated sites was responsible for the unusual S-shaped absorption isobar, leading to good desorption and excellent reversibility, which was different from traditional ILs. We believe this work provides a new method for designing highly efficient gas absorbents.

Abstract:Emission of SO2 in flue gas from the combustion of fossil fuels leads to severe environmental problems. Exploration of green and efficient methods to capture SO2 is an interesting topic, especially at lower SO2 partial pressures. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) 1-(2-diethylaminoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Et2 NEMim][Tf2 N]) and 1-(2-diethylaminoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrazolate ([Et2 NEMim][Tetz]) were synthesized. The performances of the two ILs to capture SO2 were studied under different conditions. It was demonstrated that the ILs were very efficient for SO2 absorption. The [Et2 NEMim][Tetz] IL designed in this work could absorb 0.47 g(SO2)g(IL)(-1) at 0.0101 MPa SO2 partial pressure, which is the highest capacity reported to date under the same conditions. The main reason for the large capacity was that both the cation and the anion could capture SO2 chemically. In addition, the IL could easily be regenerated, and the very high absorption capacity and rapid absorption/desorption rates were not changed over five repeated cycles.
Ionic liquid-assisted synthesis of In2O3 nanoparticles for ppb-level NO2 sensing at low temperature

Abstract:Highly sensitive detection of nitric dioxide (NO2) has recently attracted much attention due to its harmful to the human health even at a low concentration of 0.1 parts per million (ppm). Herein, In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via a facile ionic liquid (IL) assisted solvothermal method with subsequent calcination and then were analyzed through the characterization of X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. Morphological characterization demonstrated that the resultant compounds were In2O3 NPs with a diameter ranging from 20 to 30 nm. The gas sensor based on the In2O3 NPs prepared with IL exhibited excellent NO2-sensing properties in terms of fast response/recovery speed (26.6/10.0 s), high response (310.0), good repeatability and long-term stability to 10 ppm NO2 gas at low working temperature of 92 °C. The gas-sensing mechanism of In2O3 NPs to NO2 was represented to the surface adsorption control model and the possibilities relating to the improved NO2 sensing performance of the In2O3 NPs synthesized with IL-assisted were also discussed in detail.
Efficient adsorption removal of NO 2 by covalent triazine frameworks with fine-tuned binding sites

Abstract:One promising method for mitigating low-temperature and low-concentration NO 2 pollution is selective adsorption using porous solid materials. However, the corrosive nature of NO 2 renders the development of an adsorbent with high and cyclable NO 2 uptake a formidable challenge. Herein, we attempted to address this challenge by developing a microporous covalent triazine framework (CTF) as effective adsorbents for NO 2 capture, achieving unprecedented high cyclable capacity enabled by simultaneous high adsorbent stability and moderate adsorption affinity via tuning specific binding sites. Using dynamic column breakthrough experiments, we demonstrated that the pristine CTF exhibited a high NO 2 adsorption capacity (dry: 3.83 mmol/g; wet: 5.26 mmol/g) overtaking most reported solid adsorbents, thanks to abundant active sites (e.g., nitrogen/carbon/triazine rings). Post-synthesis converted the surface nitrogen to protonated nitrogen site and further to transition metal site affording more effective binding sites that allows for moderately strong adsorption, resulting in elevated NO 2 adsorption capacity (dry: 6.11 mmol/g; wet: 8.97 mmol/g) and a highest reversible NO 2 adsorption (retaining 91 % and 64 % at dry and wet conditions after five cycles, respectively), as illustrated by our mechanistic study using in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. This work affords not only promising adsorbents for real-world applications in mitigating NO 2 pollution, but also a strategy of developing robust adsorbents with desired affinity generally applicable to adsorptive capture of corrosive and toxic gases.

Abstract:A novel strategy for SO(2) capture through multiple-site absorption in the anion of several azole-based ionic liquids is reported. An extremely high capacity of SO(2) (>3.5 mol/mol) and excellent reversibility (28 recycles) were achieved by tuning the interaction between the basic anion and acidic SO(2). Spectroscopic investigations and quantum-mechanical calculations showed that such high SO(2) capacity originates from the multiple sites of interaction between the anion and SO(2). These tunable azole-based ionic liquids with multiple sites offer significant improvements over commonly used absorbents, indicating the promise for industrial applications in acid gas separation.

Abstract:Carelessemission of nitric oxide (NO), primarily fromthe post-combustionflue gas of fossil fuel, has resulted in severe environmental pollutionand posed significant health risks to human beings. In the meantime,NO is an important intermediate in manufacturing nitric acid and nitrochemicals, where the preparation of NO has contributed to great energyconsumption. Therefore, establishing a green and low-cost denitrificationmethod to achieve the efficient conversion of NO in flue gas to nitricacid and nitro chemicals is of great significance. For this purpose,the novel strategy that applies functionalized ionic liquids to convertingultralow-concentration NO in the presence of air and water under elevatedpressure is proposed, which incorporates the positive influence ofelevated pressure on absorption and conversion of NO, efficient chemisorptionability and good catalytic performance of functionalized ionic liquids,and the elimination effect of water for nitrogen dioxide. Based onthis strategy, the high cleanup efficiency of 96.1% for 500 ppm ofNO in the realistic flue gas is achieved by the functionalized ionicliquid containing 40% water at 30 & DEG;C and 1 MPa, and nitrogenoxides concentration of the exhaust gas is only 19.6 ppm (about 28mg Nm(-3)) that meets the stringent regulation ofcleanup emission of nitrogen oxides (lower than 50 mg Nm(-3)). In addition, the presence of 750 ppm of sulfur dioxide and 5-10%water, which may deactivate the absorbents and catalysts, does notsuppress the denitrification performance of the ionic liquid. Finally,the cleanup efficiency of the ionic liquid for 500 ppm of NO maintainsat about 96.2% during 5 cycles with no traces of decomposition products.We believe that this sustainable strategy will open new prospectsfor cleanup and circular utilization of NO in industrial flue gas.
Design and Prediction for Highly Efficient SO2 Capture from Flue Gas by Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

Abstract:An efficient method for prediction in the capture of SO2 from flue gas by imidazolium ionic liquids was reported, where the concentration of SO2 is 2000 ppm. On the basis of quantitative calculations through a combination of Langmuir simulation, theoretical calculation and quantum chemical method, SO2 absorption and desorption performance from flue gas by twelve kinds of imidazolium ionic liquids with different anions were designed and predicted. Then, among them, five kinds of imidazolium ionic liquids were chosen and prepared to investigate their behavior of SO2 absorption capacity, desorption residue, and available absorption capacity. The results indicated that the experimental values were in good agreement with the predicted values. Thus, an ideal ionic liquid [Emim][Tetz] was obtained through the predictive method for the capture of SO2 of 2000 ppm, which showed high available absorption capacity of 0.24 g SO2 per g ionic liquid and excellent reversibility.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are suitable for the absorption of acid gases such as SO2 because of their unique properties. In this work, a new method was developed for the highly efficient capture of SO2 by introducing a phenyl group into the azole-based ionic liquids. It was found that these phenyl-containing azole-based ionic liquids reacted with SO2 through multiple-site interactions between the anion and SO2, resulting in an extremely high SO2 capacity of up to similar to 5.7 mole per mole ionic liquid. Spectroscopic investigations and quantum calculations show that the dramatic enhancement in the SO2 capacity originated from the enhanced pi...S interaction between the phenyl group on the anion and SO2. Furthermore, the captured SO2 was easy to release by heating or bubbling N-2 through the ionic liquid. This efficient and reversible process using these phenyl-containing azole-based ionic liquids with an enhanced pi...S interaction provides an excellent alternative to current SO2 capture technologies.
Constructing Adsorption Site-Enhanced Vo-BiOCl/rGO Heterostructures for Efficient Response to NO2/NH3 Gases at Room Temperature

Abstract:Real-time detection of harmful gases at room temperature has become a serious problem in public health and environmental monitoring. Two-dimensional materials with semiconductor properties BiOCl is a promising gas-sensitive material due to its large specific surface area and adjustable band gap as well as outstanding safety characteristics. However, limited by the weak gas adsorption sites and sluggish charge-transfer ability, the performance of BiOCl could not be fully exploited. Oxygen vacancy (Vo) engineering can introduce lattice defects, thereby significantly increasing the local charge density and enhancing the adsorption of gases, which is an effective strategy to enhance the gas-sensing performance. In this work, we composite BiOCl with a vacancy (Vo-BiOCl) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to construct a Vo-BiOCl/rGO heterostructure with enhanced gas adsorption sites. Experimental and theoretical calculations show that Vo can enhance the adsorption of gases and the introduction of rGO forms a high-quality heterostructure with BiOCl, which can effectively reduce the band gap of BiOCl and promote electron transfer, thereby improving the sensitivity of the sensor. Benefiting from above, Vo-BiOCl/rGO achieves the ability to detect low concentrations of NO2/NH3 at room temperature, with high sensitivity (55% at 1 ppm of NO2 and -28% at 1 ppm of NH3), fast response time (40 s at 1 ppm of NO2 and 2 s at 1 ppm of NH3), good stability (over 150 days), and fully recoverable gas sensitivity.
Room-temperature reduction of NO<sub>2</sub> in a Li-NO<sub>2</sub> battery: a proof of concept

Abstract:Although considerable effort has been devoted to purifying nitrogen oxides (NOx), it is still challenging to effectively reduce NO, at room temperature and ambient pressure without catalysts. In this study, as a proof-of-concept, we have for the first time demonstrated the room-temperature reduction of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using a rechargeable lithium-nitrogen dioxide (Li-NO2) battery. The battery shows a capacity of 884 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) (an actual energy density of 666 Wh kg(-1)) and a promising electrochemical Faraday efficiency (FE) of 67%. The unique properties of Li-NO2 rechargeable batteries not only provide a way to reduce and recycle NO2 but also highlight the potential of oxidative air pollutants as energy sources for next-generation electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems. Oxidative adsorption mechanism-based screening of zeolites for deep purification and recycling of NOx from humid gases

Abstract:Adsorption is a promising technology for deep purification of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from flue gases and simultaneously recycling NO2 as an economically valuable chemical. Zeolite as a robust NOx adsorbent provides the key step for success in practical applications, of which the screening remains challenging regarding the NO-NO2 oxidation and adsorption combined process. In this work, experimental evaluations on practical NOx sorption performances on series of zeolites were conducted. Effects of the zeolite typological structure, compensating cation, and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on deep purification efficacy, water resistance, and regenerability at varying humidity were obtained, revealing the importance of kinetics of the NO oxidation and NO2 physisorption consecutive process. The H-typed 10-membered-ring straight-channel zeolites (MFI and FER) were demonstrated to be the preferred NOx adsorbents qualified for industrial needs, as compared to other caged-channel, hybrid-channel, larger-sized straight-channel, or Na-typed counterparts. Deeper insights into the key role of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in driving the NO-NO2 catalytic cycle and promoting the adsorption competitiveness of NOx over water vapor were revealed based on in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy characterizations. The MFI zeolite with improved performance at the low-silica version could benefit from the efficient utilization of BAS within the highly accessible medium-sized straight channel, while the FAU zeolite (representative caged-channel zeolite) requiring appropriate SiO2/Al2O3 ratio for optimal BAS utilization may suffer from the limited site accessibility. The findings clarify the relationships between NOx oxidative adsorption performances and zeolite properties, which provides a fundamental perspective and scientific screening strategy for NOx adsorbents.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention as promising candidates for removing toxic chemicals under ambient conditions in virtue of their remarkable thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability. Her; we demonstrate for the first time the enhanced performance of nanoporous dicarboxylic acid-functionalized MOF-808 analogues toward NO2 removal under both dry and moist conditions. Based on a pK(a)-directed solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) strategy, a series of dicarboxylic acid ligands, including isophthalic acid, 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid, 5-aminoisophthalic acid, 5-nitroisophthalic acid, and pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid, were precisely incorporated into the MOF-808 framework via substitution of formate ligands. The assembled MOF-808 derivatives demonstrated good crystallinity, well-defined morphology, high porosities, and tunable dicarboxylic acid contents, with the maximum molar ratios of dicarboxylic acid ligands to 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acids in frameworks larger than 1:1. The microbreakthrough tests showed that the 5-aminoisophthalic acid-modified MOF-808 (808-NH(2)IPA) exhibited a significant enhancement in NO2 capacities and the most remarkable reduction in the release of toxic NO byproduct as compared to pristine MOF-808. Detailed removal mechanisms for NO2 were developed on the basis of multiple ex-situ characterization techniques and in-situ infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The effects of humidity on the mechanisms were also discussed. The reactions between the amino groups and NO2, yielding nitramines, nitrosamines, and arenediazonium salts, were proposed to play a major role for the outstanding performance of 808-NH(2)IPA for dry NO2 removal. The acid-base reaction between HNO3 and the amino groups preponderated in the moist NO2 removal process, with the anilinium nitrate species turning into the principal product.
High-efficiency and selective capture of nitric oxide by fluorine-modified carbon nitride: A DFT investigation

Abstract:Effective capture of NO molecule is of great significance for its environmental removal and separation. In present work, theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were implemented to investigate the adsorption performances and interaction mechanism of the surface and interior fluorine (F) doped C3N4 towards gases. The results showed that although the surface F doped C3N4 possessed excellent selectivity for NO among O2, N2, CO, CO2, NO and NO2, an undesired byproduct—nitrosyl fluoride (FNO) has yielded in the adsorption process. While the interior F-doped C3N4 effectively prevented the FNO generation, and retained the high selectivity and adsorption capacity for NO. The superior adsorption characteristics originated from the electron vacancies engendered in the F-doped C3N4 surface attributed from the strong electronegativity of F atoms. In addition, the optical properties and the effect of F concentration were explored. The visible-light response range was enlarged after NO adsorption, which was conducive to detect NO molecules. And decreasing the concentration of fluorine greatly reduced the affinity and intensity for NO adsorption, offering an efficient way to tune the NO capture ability. Our work anticipates a wide range of potential applications of F-modified carbon nitride in the capture and detection of NO.

Abstract:A strategy of tuning azole‐based ionic liquids for reversible CO2 capture from ambient air was reported. Through tuning the basicity of anion as well as the type of cation, an ideal azole‐based ionic liquid with both high CO2 capacity and excellent stability was synthesized, which exhibited a highest single‐component isotherm uptake of 2.17 mmol/g at the atmospheric CO2 concentration of 0.4 mbar at 30 oC, even in the presence of water. The bound CO2 can be released by relatively mild heating of the IL‐CO2 at 80 oC, which mike it promising for energy‐efficient CO2 desorption and sorbent regeneration, leading to excellent reversibility. To the best of our knowledge, these azole‐based ionic liquids are superior to other adsorbent materials for direct air capture due to their dual‐tunable properties and high CO2 capture efficiency, offering a new prospect for efficient and reversible direct air capture technologies.
