Abstract:Five systems (2LiBH(4)-MgH2, 2LiBH(4)-MgH2-10% Fe2O3, 2LiBH(4)-MgH2-10% TiF3, 2LiBH(4)-MgH2-5% Fe2O3-5% TiF3 and 2LiBH(4)-MgH2-10% Fe2O3-10% TiF3) were prepared by hall milling. They were investigated through thermogravimeteric analysis (TG), diffraction scanning calorimetric (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and pressure-content-temperature (PCT). The addition of Fe2O3 and TiF3 improved the hydrogen release property of the LiBH4-MgH2 complex system effectively. Especially, the codoped system (2LiBH(4)-MgH2-10% Fe2O3-10% TiF3) starts to release hydrogen at around 110 degrees C and can release as much as 9.6%. Besides, the results of PCT show that the codoped system (2LiBH(4)-MgH2-5% Fe2O3-5% TiF3) can release about 8.6% hydrogen within 10 min at 400 degrees C. The properties of the codoped system are better than the other two single doped systems, which partly incarnated the synergistic catalysis of Fe2O3 and TiF3.

Abstract:The LiBH 4 + mesoporous Fe 2 O 3 (defined as M-Fe 2 O 3 ) mono-doped and LiBH 4 + M-Fe 2 O 3 + TiF 3 co-doped hybrid materials were prepared by ball milling process. A variety of characterization methods, such as thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and pressure–composition–temperature instrument, were used for examinations of the two materials’ performances of storage/release of hydrogen, catalytic activity, kinetics, and thermodynamics. All the results showed that the M-Fe 2 O 3 prepared in laboratory exhibited a good catalytic effect. Compared with the performance of M-Fe 2 O 3 mono-doped system, M-Fe 2 O 3 and TiF 3 co-doped mode exhibits a better performance using the same additive content. Thus, the M-Fe 2 O 3 and TiF 3 co-doped mode possesses a collaborative catalytic utility with the LiBH 4 hydrogen performance improved, showing a promising application.
Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties and Mechanism of LiBH4–MgH2–Al Doped with NbF5Additive

Abstract:LiBH4 is one of the most potential candidates for hydrogen storage materials among several sorts of complex borohydrides. Utilizing reactive hydride composites on LiBH4 could destabilize the thermodynamics and improve dehydrogenation behaviors, such as the excellent reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2 and the fast dehydrogenation of LiBH4-Al. The strategy of combining both outstanding effects of MgH2 and AI to form LiBH4-MgH2-Al system has been proposed. However, reduction of hydrogen capacity during cycles has not been solved for the LiBH4-MgH2-Al system, which is considered as the principal problem. In this work, we investigated the reversible hydrogen storage performance and reaction mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al doped with/without NbF5 additive. It can be found that the dehydrogenation of 4LiBH(4)-MgH2-Al can release about 9.0 wt % H-2 quickly without incubation period, compared with 2LiBH(4)-MgH2. Moreover, it is the first time to achieve completely reversible hydrogen desorption property of LiBH4-MgH2-Al by doping with NbF5 and dehydrogenating under hydrogen back pressure in experiment. Microstructure analysis shows that the formation of Mg-Al alloys could result in the formation of Li2B12H12 and subsequently lead to the capacity degradation. With the additive NbF5, it shows a totally different pathway and a significant inhibition effect on the alloying between Mg and Al, leading to an improved de/rehydrogenation behavior without the byproduct Li2B12H12. Meanwhile, NbF5 could be hydrogenated into NbH2 and react with element B to form NbB2, promoting the reaction between Mg/Al metals and B element to form MgAlB4. On the other hand, those niobium compounds could facilitate the products MgAlB4 and LiH to be fully rehydrogenated into LiBH4, MgH2, and Al, which contributes to the complete reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2-Al. A better understanding of the capacity fade mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al system and the effects of additives might promote further development of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials.
Significant Destabilization Effects of Metal Borides on LiBH4

Abstract:In this paper,we report our recent observations of the significant decreases in the dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 by the addition of metal borides MB2(M=Mg,Ti,Zr)and MB6(M=Ca,La).MB2 addition reduced the dehydrogenation temperature from about 450℃for pure LiBH4 to 350℃.MB6 demonstrated more significant destabilizing effects on LiBH4.The hydrogen storage reversibility of LiBH4 was also significantly improved due to the presences of the metal borides.The results of XRD,FT-IR,DSC and MS analysis suggest that the metal borides mainly acted as the catalysts for the first dehydrogenation of LiBH4.They participated in the hydrogenation reaction and could be regenerated during the cycling.

Abstract:In this work, the hydriding-dehydriding properties of the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures were investigated. It was found that the dehydrogenation and reversibility properties of LiBH4 were significantly improved by NbF5. Temperature-programed dehydrogenation (TPD) showed that 5LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample started releasing hydrogen from as low as 60 degrees C, and 4 wt.% hydrogen could be obtained below 255 degrees C. Meanwhile, similar to 7 wt.% H-2 could be reached at 400 degrees C in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample, whereas pristine LiBH4 only released similar to 0.7 wt.% H-2. In addition, reversibility measurement demonstrated that over 4.4 wt.% H-2 could still be released even during the fifth dehydrogenation in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample. The experimental results suggested that a new borohydride possibly formed during ball milling the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures might be the source of the active effect of NbF5 on LiBH4. Abstract:A 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite was prepared by me. chanically milling a mixture of LiBH4 and MnF2. The decomposition properties of the 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite were investigated and compared with those of the 3LiBH(4)/MnCl2 composite. Differing from the case for the 3LiBH(4)/MnCl2 composite where only cation substitution occurs, both the cation substitution of Mn2+ for Li+ and the anion substitution of F- for H- occur in the 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite. Moreover, compared to the 3LiBH(4)/MnCl2 composite, the 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite has a lower decomposition temperature, a higher purity of evolved hydrogen, and faster decomposition kinetics. These results suggest that MnF2 has superior destabilization effects over MnCl2 in the decomposition of LiBH4, which can be attributed to the reduced stability of B-H bonds by partial anion substitution of the F- for the H-.

Abstract:Two N-containing hydrocarbon based polymers polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyaniline (PANI) were found to be able to destabilize LiBH4, a potential hydrogen storage material, resulting in larger hydrogen capacities of more than 10 wt% with peak dehydrogenation temperatures around 344 degrees C. The results suggest that a co-destabilization effect was achieved through the interaction of BeH and CeH bonds, which was further enhanced due to the presence of nitrogen atoms in polymers. After rehydrogenation of the dehydrogenated products, LiBH4 was found to be regenerated to a large extent in both of the LiBH4+polymer composites. Detailed analysis including XRD, FTIR, DSC-TG-MS, HRTEM, Raman, XPS and solid-state B-11 MAS NMR was performed to elucidate the dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation mechanisms in these composites. The results provide considerable information about interaction mechanisms among BeH, CeH, N-H and C N bonds and also shed lights on the enhancement of LiBH4 dehydrogenation and reversibility. Abstract:In this work, the composites of LiBH4 and AlF3 were prepared and their hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The AlF 3 addition to LiBH4 resulted in significant decreases in dehydrogenation temperature. All the xLiBH4 + AlF3 (x = 1, 2, 3, 5) composites started to release hydrogen from about 100 °C. The dehydrogenation of the composites was accomplished through several steps, depending on the molar ratio of LiBH4 to AlF3. A new phase Li3AlF6 was formed during the first dehydrogenation step, which further reacted with LiBH4. AlB2 was formed only at temperatures higher than 300 °C. Li2B12H12 was detected as an intermediate. The dehydrogenation reactions have significantly reduced and thus favorable enthalpy changes. However, the reversibility of the composites needs to be improved. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Metals (Ni, Fe)-incorporated titanate nanotubes (M-TNT, M = Ni, Fe) with H2Ti3O7 structure were synthesized to destabilize the LiBH4 for hydrogen storage. The onset temperature of dehydrogenation was reduced to 100 degrees C for LiBH4 and M-TNT composite, which could release 4.5 wt % hydrogen at 120 degrees C and 11 wt % hydrogen at 260 degrees C from LiBH4. Our experiment results indicate that ball-milled LiBH4/Ni TNT sample has a better dehydrogenation performance than ball-milled LiBH4/Ni/H2Ti3O7 nanotube and ball-milled LiBH4/NiO/H2Ti3O7 nanotube samples. Furthermore, one finds that the release of poisoning species like BH3 and B2H6 could be inhibited by nanotube with H2Ti3O7 structure rather than that with anatase structure. The interactions between LiBH4 and different structure nanotubes are investigated by the first-principle calculation in the present work.
Hydrogen desorption from LiBH4 destabilized by chlorides of transition metal Fe, Co, and Ni

Abstract:The dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 was considerably decreased to 230 °C–300 °C when it was manually mixed with FeCl2, CoCl2 and NiCl2 in a molar ratio of 2:1. Mixing LiBH4 with NiCl2 or FeCl2 led to complete hydrogen desorption from LiBH4, i.e. 18.3 wt% hydrogen was achieved with respect to the weight of LiBH4. However, the CoCl2 addition resulted in less hydrogen release due to the formation of diborane. Ball milling treatment for the mixtures of LiBH4 and these chlorides further decreased hydrogen desorption temperatures. The results indicate that LiBH4 could be effectively destabilized by the chlorides of Fe, Co and Ni. Small doping of these chlorides into LiBH4 was found to be effective in enhancing dehydrogenation kinetics of the remaining LiBH4 due to the formation of metal borides.

Abstract:A significant enhancement in the dehydrogenation performance of LiBH4 is achieved by modifying with fluorographite (FGi). In-depth investigations show that the dehydrogenation thermodynamics and kinetics of LiBH4 are strongly improved by ball milling LiBH4 with FGi. The ball-milled LiBH4-FGi (mass ratio of 1:1) composite starts to release hydrogen without impurity gas at around 180 degrees C, and obtains a hydrogen desorption capacity of 7.2 wt% below 200 degrees C in seconds, which is improved dramatically compared with pristine ball-milled LiBH4. Microscopic morphology indicates that numerous similar to 90 nm spots formed on the surface of FGi. Based on the microstructure analyses combined with hydrogen storage performances, the prominent effect of FGi is largely attributed to the nanomodifying effect and the exothermic reaction between LiBH4 and FGi during the dehydrogenation process. Furthermore, partial reversibility of the LiBH4-FGi composite has been demonstrated and the mechanism underlying the cycling capacity loss is discussed. The use of FGi may shed light on future study on searching for new strategies to improve both the thermodynamics and kinetics of light-metal complex hydrides. Effects of Fluoride Additives on Dehydrogenation Behaviors of 2libh4 + MgH2 System

Abstract:Various additives such as NbF5, TiF3, CeF3, LaF3 and FeF3 were used to dope 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 system and their dehydriding properties were investigated systematically. Among the different additives, NbF5 exhibited the most prominent behavior in terms of fast kinetics and lower the dehydrogenation temperature of 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 system. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows that 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 system milled with 5 mol% NbF5 lowered the dehydrogenation temperature by 30 degrees C and 58 degrees C for the two-step dehydrogenation compared to neat 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 system. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) indicates that 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 + 0.05NbF(5) dehydrided completely below 450 degrees C with 8.1 wt.% hydrogen released. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis evidence that MgB2 was fully formed after dehydrogenation. Effects of Fluoride Additives on the Hydrogen Storage Performance of 2Libh(4)-Li3alh6 Destabilized System

Abstract:2LiBH(4)-Li3AlH6 composite samples doped with or without 5 wt % metal fluorides (CeF3, NiF2 and TiF3) were prepared by ball milling, and the effects of fluoride additives on the hydrogen storage performance of the samples were comparatively investigated. It is found that the undoped 2LiBH(4)-Li3AlH6 system presents a favorable destabilized dehydrogenation performance as compared with the as-milled pure LiBH4. The three fluorides can enhance the dehydriding kinetics of the 2LiBH(4)-Li3AlH6 destabilized system to some extent. The TiF3-doped composite exhibits the most prominent behavior in terms of the low dehydrogenation temperature and fast dehydriding rate. The activation energy for the decomposition of LiBH4 was measured by differential scanning calorimetry; that of the TiF3 doped composite was calculated to be 118.3 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of the undoped composite (197.6 kJ/mol). In addition, the experimental results show that the reversibility of the 2LiBH(4)-Li3AlH6 composite is improved by the doping of TiF3, which plays a catalytic role, strengthens the interaction between LiBH4 and Li3AlH6, and thus further improves the de/rehydrogenation performance.
Reactive Destabilization and Bidirectional Catalyzation for Reversible Hydrogen Storage of LiBH4 by Novel Waxberry-Like Nano-Additive Assembled from Ultrafine Fe3O4 Particles

Abstract:LiBH 4 containing 18.5 wt.% H 2 is an attractive high-capacity hydrogen storage material, however, it suffers from high operation temperature and poor reversibility. Herein, a novel and low-cost bifunctional additive, waxberry-like Fe 3 O 4 secondary nanospheres assembled from ultrafine primary Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, is synthesized, which exhibits significant destabilization and bidirectional catalyzation towards (de)hydrogenation of LiBH 4 . With an optimized addition of 30 wt.% waxberry-like Fe 3 O 4 , the system initiated dehydrogenation below 100 & DEG;C and released a total of 8.1 wt.% H 2 to 400 & DEG;C. After 10 cycles, a capacity retention of 70% was achieved, greatly superior to previously reported oxides-modified systems. The destabilizing and catalyzing mechanisms of waxberry-like Fe 3 O 4 on LiBH 4 were systematically analyzed by phase and microstructural evolutions during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation cycling as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Enhanced hydrogen storage performance of LiBH4–Ni composite

Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties of LiBH4 ball milled with various ratios of Ni powders were investigated. It was found that Ni addition improved the dehydrogenation of LiBH4, resulting in the majority of hydrogen released from LiBH4 below 600 degrees C. According to van't Hoff equation, the desorption enthalpy of LiBH4-Ni system was calculated to be Delta H = -60.76 kJ mol(-1) H-2, which is similar to that of the pure LiBH4. Pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) results revealed that Ni addition accelerate the dehydrogenation rate of LiBH4. Nanosize-Controlled Reversibility for a Destabilizing Reaction in the LiBH4–NdH2+x System

Abstract:A reversible reaction, 4LiBH(4) + NdH2 <-> NdB4 + 4LiH + 7H(2), which destabilizes the dehydrogenation thermodynamics of LiBH4, has been found in the present work. Significantly, we prove that the reversibility only exists when NdH2+x is in size of less than about 10 nm. With this reaction, the estimated dehydrogenation enthalpy change is reduced from 74 kJ mol(-1) H-2 for pristine LiBH4 to 64 kJ mol(-1) H-2; the theoretical hydrogen capacity is 6.0 wt%, and there is no emission of deleterious BH3 and B2H6. Moreover, the dehydrogenation kinetics of this reaction are fast-6.0 wt% hydrogen was released within 1.5 h at 370 degrees C. When the NdH2+x becomes stable owing to its significant growth, the thermodynamic destabilization effect does not occur after several hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. However, the presence of NdH2+x also has a positive effect upon the dehydrogenation kinetics of LiBH4. This novel finding is beneficial for modifying the reversibility of the reactive hydride composite systems through nanosize controlling.

Herein, porous hollow carbon microspheres composed of carbon-coated Ni nanoparticles with high content (denoted as Ni/C) are rationally designed as functional support, which not only induces effective nanoconfinement of LiBH4 but also promotes efficiently homogeneous destabilization reaction between LiBH4 and Ni nanoparticles. The introduction of Ni nanoparticles leads to the decrease of the Gibbs free energy change for H2 desorption of LiBH4 based on the formation of Ni2B down to −0.95 eV while this value reaches 1.19 eV for bulk LiBH4, validating the effective role of Ni in thermodynamically destabilizing H2 desorption. Impressively, the average B–H bond length of LiBH4 on Ni2B reaches 1.291 Å and thus the corresponding dissociation energy of removing one H atom from LiBH4 is lowered to 1.00 eV, much lower than bulk LiBH4 (4.22 eV) and even LiBH4 on Ni (1.27 eV), which verifies superior role of Ni2B than Ni in catalytically enhancing H2 desorption. Therefore, a capacity of 8.86 wt.% is obtained for LiBH4 confined into Ni/C at 320°C after 10 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium borohydride is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage and fuel cell application due to its high hydrogen content. In the present work, the effect of various oxides on the dehydrogenation of LiBH4 was investigated. The MS-TG results showed that the LiBH4/oxide mixtures were able to dehydrogenate at much lower temperatures; for example, the onset of dehydrogenation was below 100 degrees C for a LiBH4-Fe2O3 mixture with a mass ratio of 1:2, and the majority of the hydrogen (similar to 6 wt %) could be released after heating to 200 degrees C. The order of destabilization effect for LiBH4 for the studied oxides was Fe2O3 > V2O5 > Nb2O5 > TiO2 > SiO2. XRD results revealed that the destabilization of LiBH4 by the oxides resulted from a redox reaction of LiBH4 + MOx -> LiMOx + B + 2H(2). Investigation of mixed metal oxides showed that a TiO2/SiO2 sample produced an even greater effect, decreasing the temperature of hydrogen release from LiBH4 by more than either TiO2 and SiO2 alone.
Synergetic Effect of in Situ Formed Nano NbH and LiH1–xFx for Improving Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties of the Li–Mg–B–H System

Abstract:A significant improvement in hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties of 2LiH/MgB2 can be achieved by adding NbF5. The results show that the NbF5 additive is effective for enhancing the de/hydrogenation kinetics of the Li-Mg-B-H system and reducing the desorption temperatures of MgH2 and LiBH4. For the 2LiH-MgB2-0.03NbF(5) sample, About 9.0 wt % hydrogen capacity is obtained rapidly under cyclic conditions of rehydrogenation within 20 min at 350 degrees C and dehydrogenation within 20 min at 400 degrees C; thus, catalytic improvement persists well in the subsequent reversible dehydrogenation cycles. Moreover, the sample could reversibly reabsorb and release more than 9.0 wt % hydrogen even at 250 and 375 degrees C, respectively. Microstructure analyses reveal that the NbF5 additive in improving the de/hydrogenation properties of Li-Mg-B-H system could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of in situ formed nano NbH particles acting as "active gateways" facilitating the diffusion of hydrogen, and the "favorable thermodynamic destabilization" from the reversible transition of LiH1-xFx caused by functionality of F-anion substitution. This fundamental understanding provides us with insights into the design and optimization of the catalytic method and species for the catalyzed Li-Mg-B-H system.
