Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:In this study, Ga doped ZnO photonic crystals were developed for the purpose of achieving the cooperative enhancement from the photonic crystals structure and Ga doping. The Ga doped ZnO photonic crystals with highly ordered skeleton structure could be obtained via a dip-coating infiltration method. By varying the pore diameter of photonic crystals, the slow photon effect could be found over the sample with a pore diameter of 217nm and the corresponding electronic band gap absorption was enhanced. Moreover, the introduction of Ga increased the specific surface area of Ga doped ZnO photonic crystals while the concentration of hydroxyl oxygen on the surface decreased simultaneously, which formed a competitive relationship in determining the photocatalytic performance of Ga doped ZnO photonic crystals. The photocatalytic activities for the degradation of rhodamine B showed that 3 at% Ga doped ZnO photonic crystals with a pore diameter of 217nm exhibited higher activity compared with other samples. The higher activity could be attributed to the slow photon effect from the photonic crystal structure and increased specific surface area after Ga doping. Furthermore, based on the results of the detection of radicals, the degradation mechanism was discussed in details.

Abstract:ZnIn2S4 has been extensively studied in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE), but its bulky structure often results in high charge carrier recombination and low light harvesting capability. Herein, efficient hierarchical MGa2O4/ZnIn2S4 (M = Ni, Co) hollow nanofiber photocatalysts with p-n heterojunction were fabricated by an electrospinning-solvothermal method. The hierarchical structure of MGa2O4/ZnIn2S4 composites has facilitated p-n heterojunction formation, promoted the charge separation efficiency, enhanced light harvesting capability, and provided abundant reactive sites. The synergistic effects of MGa2O4 and ZnIn2S4 accelerated the PHE rate by reducing the *H reaction intermediates energy barrier. Under simulated solar light, the NiGa2O4/ZnIn2S4 and CoGa2O4/ZnIn2S4 with optimal proportions delivered outstanding PHE rate of 9292 and 6283 mu mol center dot g(-1)center dot h(- 1), which was 5 and 3 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4, respectively. This work opens up an efficient electrospinning-mediated solvothermal strategy for constructing hierarchical ZnIn2S4-based nanofiber composites with excellent PHE performance.

Abstract:ZnGa2O4 was synthesized from Ga(NO3)3 and ZnCl2 via a rapid and facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic properties of the as-prepared ZnGa2O4 were evaluated by the degradation of pollutants in air and aqueous solution under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination. The results demonstrated that ZnGa2O4 had exhibited efficient photocatalytic activities higher than that of commercial P25 (Degussa Co.) in the degradation of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene, respectively. In the liquid phase degradation of dyes (methyl orange, Rhodamine B, and methylene blue), ZnGa2O4 has also exhibited remarkable activities higher than that of P25. After 32min of UV light irradiation, the decomposition ratio of methyl orange (10ppm, 150mL) over ZnGa2O4 (0.06g) was up to 99%. The TOC tests revealed that the mineralization ratio of MO (10ppm, 150mL) was 88.1% after 90min of reaction. A possible mechanism of the photocatalysis over ZnGa2O4 was also proposed.

Abstract:An efficient photocatalyst consisting of heterostructured ZnO-ZnS nanocables was synthesized via a template-assisted method. The ZnS shell with an adjustable thickness around 10 nm can be synthesized in a sodium sulfide solution from electrospun zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, resulting in the core-shell nanostructures. The morphology and structure of the samples during the conversion process were characterized, and the corresponding ultraviolet photocatalytic activity was evaluated by using rhodamine B degradation as a probe reaction. The coupling of the two photocatalysts suggests a higher photon efficiency and an enhanced exciton separation, which lead to a remarkable improvement of the photocatalytic activity by similar to 10 times as compared with pure ZnO nanofibers.
Fabrication of Opaline ZnO Photonic Crystal Film and Its Slow-Photon Effect on Photoreduction of Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Monodisperse ZnO particles with adjustable size have been produced on a large scale by two-step seeding-growth polyol reactions. Through spin coating of supersaturated ZnO/diethylene glycol solution and evaporation of solvent, opaline ZnO photonic crystal (PC) film with good crystallinity and uniform photonic structures can be prepared from these ZnO particles. Compared with a disorderly stacked ZnO film, the ZnO PC film shows a higher activity in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to the generated slow photons at the edge of the photonic band gap and their promotion to the light absorption. When the electronic band gap of ZnO matches the red edge of the photonic band gap of ZnO PC, the enhancement factor of photocatalytic activity represented by CO evolution can be maximized to 2.64-fold in the current experiment. Compared to the traditional inverse opal photocatalysts, the opaline ZnO photocatalysts are prepared by simplified and scalable procedures, and they still possess the same enhancement in activity compared to ZnO without the photonic structure, which might be broadly used in solar energy utilization, environment protection, and many other green chemical processes in the future.

Abstract:Without the use of a metal catalyst in the process, ZnO with nanostructures was successfully prepared on Si (100) substrate by simple chemical vapor-deposition method. In our work, Ar was used as the plasma forming gas, O2 was the reactive gas and metal zinc powder (99.99% purity) vaporized by cylinder hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) acted as the zinc source. The crystal structures of the as-synthesized ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD); the ZnO sample growing on the wall of the crucible showed a ‘comb-like’ nanostructure, while the other one at the bottom of the crucible showed a ‘rod-like’ structure, which can be attributed to the difference of the oxygen content. The measurement on the photoluminescence (PL) performance of the ZnO nanostructures was carried out at room temperature. The results indicated that the ‘comb-shape’ ZnO nanomaterial possessed a remarkably strong ultraviolet emission peak centered at 388 nm, while ZnO nanorods, except better ultraviolet emission, also had relatively strong blue-green emission ranging from 470 to 600 nm due to the existence of oxygen vacancies. The growth mechanism of ZnO with nanostructures is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:A novel direct Z-scheme ZnS quantum dot (QD)-Fe2O3 QD heterojunction/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (GZxFy) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface of ZnS and Fe2O3 QDs was modified by -COOH and -OH groups, respectively. ZnS QDs can be covalently bonded with Fe2O3 QDs by the dehydration reaction to form the ZnS QDs-Fe2O3 QDs heterojunctions. The GZxFy nanocomposites displayed the highest photodegradation efficiency of 96.45% (40 min, UV light) and 90.17% (480 min, visible light) for methylene blue when the mass ratio of ZnS QDs to Fe2O3 QDs was 1:3. The excellent photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting ability, high large specific surface area, efficient interfacial charge-carrier separation and transfer as well as the low charge transfer resistance. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and radical trapping experiments were used to confirm the Z-scheme mechanism formed between ZnS QDs and Fe2O3 QDs, and verify the electron transfer direction for UV or visible light-driven photocatalytic reactions. GZ1F3 nanocomposites showed the excellent superparamagnetic behavior, which enabled its rapid magnetic recycle from the solution within 95 s in a magnetic field.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel and facile method for the fabrication of ZnO hollow spheres. In this approach, zinc ions were first adsorbed onto the surfaces of sulfonated polystyrene core-shell template spheres, and then reacted with NaOH to form a ZnO crystal nucleus, which was followed by a growth step to form ZnO nanoshells. During the formation of ZnO nanoshells or later on, the template spheres were "dissolved" in the same media to obtain ZnO hollow spheres directly. Neither additional dissolution nor calcination process was needed in this method to remove the templates, and the reaction conditions were very mild: neither high temperature nor long time was needed. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis were used to investigate the morphology, surface composition, crystalline structure, specific surface area, and porosity of the ZnO hollow spheres, respectively. UV-visible spectra show that these ZnO hollow spheres had very,good photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:To realize practical applications of the photocatalysis technique, it is necessary to synthesize semiconductor photocatalysts with specific facets that induce high reactive activities and high reactive selectivity. However, a challenge lies in the synthesis of metal oxides containing more than one type of metal with specific facets. Usually, surfactants are used to control the crystal morphology, which induces surface contamination for the final products. Here, using the GaOOH nanoplate as precursor, ZnGa2O4 nanocubes with exposed {100} facets are synthesized by an hydrothermal ion‐exchange route without requiring the introduction of morphology controlling agents. These ZnGa2O4 nanocubes exhibit improved performance in the photoreduction of CO2 into CH4 or water splitting into hydrogen. Theoretical calculations indicates that the light‐hole effective mass on the {100} facets of ZnGa2O4 corresponds to the high hole mobility, which contributes to the efficient water oxidation to offer the protons for promoting CO2 photoreduction into hydrocarbon fuels.
Facile Synthesis of Highly Efficient ZnO/ZnFe2O4 Photocatalyst Using Earth-Abundant Sphalerite and Its Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Micrometer-scale ZnO/ZnFe2O4 coupled photocatalyst is synthesized via a simple, one-step thermal treatment performing on natural Fe-bearing sphalerite ((Zn, Fe)S). In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that octahedral ZnFe2O4 (similar to 5 mu m) formed on the surface of substrate-like ZnO (tens of microns) derived from the oxidation of sulfides upon heating to 800 degrees C in air for 1 h, and the two components kept stable phase ratio at 3:7 (wt%) from 900 degrees C (sample M-900) to 1200 degrees C (sample M-1200). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectra revealed that more Zn atoms in ZnFe2O4 of M-1200 occupied tetrahedral sites than M-900, resulting in a sharper A(1g) mode (similar to 647 cm(-1)), more ordered spinel structure and less antisite defects. Compared with visible-light responsive sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S, M-1200 performed more 200 nm of red-shifted optical absorption, 2.5 times at most higher the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) and 2-3-fold photocatalytic efficiency towards degradation of methyl orange and inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12. Besides, the photocatalytic activities of M-1200 preponderate over M-900, typical visible-light catalyst ZnFe2O4 and ZnO/ZnFe2O4 mechanically mixed sample. The optimization of lattice structure and the establishment of special band alignment were suggested to be remarkably beneficial to the separation of photogenerated electrons-holes and promote the photocatalytic performance. This study would enlighten a feasible and efficient strategy to fabricate coupled photocatalyst by utilizing Earth-abundant and low-cost natural minerals for solving environmental problems.

Abstract:For photoreduction of CO2 into solar fuels driven by photocatalysis, a means to convert solar energy into chemical energy, a semiconductor photocatalyst with a specific crystal surface and high chemical stability is expected to achieve high activity and selectivity. Here, (110) facets exposed Zn2GeO4 nanorods with different aspect ratios were prepared by the ion exchange reaction between Na2GeO3 colloidal solution and various zinc salt solutions. The aspect ratio of Zn2GeO4 can be adjusted in the wide range from 2.5:1 to 20:1, depending on the acid radical. In this synthetic route, the Na2GeO3 precursor is a strong base, but strong acids such as HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 as by-products were formed, meaning that the Zn2GeO4 single-crystal nanorods have good chemical stability in acid as well as in base. The excellent hydrothermal stability for the Zn2GeO4 nanorods in NaOH solution provides a simple method to obtain a hydroxylated surface for high performance in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O to hydrocarbons fuels.
Electrospinning Preparation of GaN:ZnO Solid Solution Nanorods with Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity toward H2 Production

Abstract:The development of a facile method for the synthesis of GaN:ZnO solid solution, an attractive material with a wurtzite-type structure, is vital to enhance its photocatalytic activity toward H2 evolution. Herein, GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods with diameters of around 180 nm were fabricated by combining the electro-spun method with a sequentially calcinating process. Photocatalytic water-splitting activities of the as-obtained samples loaded with Rh2−yCryO3 co-catalyst were estimated by H2 evolution under visible-light irradiation. The as-prepared GaN:ZnO nanorods at a nitridation temperature of 850 °C showed the optimal performance. Careful characterization of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods indicated that the nitridation temperature is an important parameter affecting the photocatalytic performance, which is related to the specific surface area and the absorbable visible-light wavelength range. Finally, the mechanism of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods was also investigated. The proposed synthesis strategy paves a new way to realize excellent activity and recyclability of GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorod photocatalysts for hydrogen generation.

Abstract:Visible-light-driven WO3/g-C3N4 composites photocatalysts were synthesized via a facile one-step simultaneously heating procedure with urea as the main precursor. These prepared catalyst samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the WO3/g-C3N4 composites was evaluated by the photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the composites with 25"wt.% WO3 content exhibited highest photocatalytic activity compared to pure WO3, bare g-C3N4 and other WO3/g-C3N4 composites. The favorable photocatalytic activity of WO3/g-C3N4 composites was mainly attributed to the excellent surface properties, enhanced visible-light absorption and the desirable band positions. A possible Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on structure and electrochemical characterizations results, which can well explain the enhanced migration rate of photogenerated electrons and holes in WO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions. Abstract:A novel magnetic type Ⅱ ZnFe2O4/ZnO aerogel (ZZA) heterojunction photocatalyst is firstly developed for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr (III). The optimal ZZA-400 shows typical "pearl-like" nanostructures, with particle diameters at around 20–30 nm. It possesses a large BET specific surface area of 127.5 m2/g and an appropriate bandgap of 1.9 eV. It exhibits an efficiency of 87.0 % for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction within 120 min under extremely high Cr(VI) concentration (100 mg/L), with the rate constant up to 7.08 × 10−3 min−1. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the incorporation of ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) introduces an impurity energy level in the gap region of ZnO (ZO), which contributes to the optical absorption in the visible light region. It is energetically favorable for the electrons' migration from ZnO to ZnFe2O4 due to the lower Fermi energy level of ZnFe2O4. However, the electrons migrate from ZnFe2O4 to the conduction band of ZnO with the assistance of the built-in electric field under visible light illumination, therefore, the separation of electron-hole pairs can be greatly promoted. The combination of formed O2–, the electrons in the conduction band of ZnO, and the reductive CO2– radical together enhance the photocatalytic property of the aerogel heterojunction.

Abstract:The orthorhombic polymorph of Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGS) is a metastable wurtzite-derived phase that can only be prepared in the bulk form by extensive heating at high temperatures (≥790 °C) when using the conventional solid-state reaction route. By employing a facile solution-based synthetic strategy, we were able to obtain phase-pure orthorhombic CZGS in nanocrystalline form at a much lower reaction temperature. Prior to this work, the colloidal synthesis of single-phase orthorhombic CZGS on the nanoscale has never been reported. We find that the use of an appropriate combination of coordinating solvents and precursors is crucial to the sole formation of this metastable phase in solution. A possible formation mechanism is proposed on the basis of our experimental results. Because CZGS consists of environmentally benign metal components, it is regarded as a promising alternative material to the technologically useful yet toxic cadmium-containing semiconductors. The orthorhombic CZGS nanocrystals display strong photon absorption in the visible spectrum and are photocatalytically active in dye degradation under visible-light illumination.
Facile synthesis of ZnO nanocrystals via a solid state reaction for high performance plastic dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:We report the facile synthesis of ZnO nanocrystals via a one-step solid state reaction at room temperature and their application as the photoanode in plastic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). ZnO nanoparticles were prepared utilizing zinc acetate dihydrate and sodium hydroxide with a short grinding time and without a sintering process. The as-prepared samples with the polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained ZnO nanoparticles exhibited high crystallinity even without a high temperature sintering treatment during the preparation process. The effects of compression post-treatment on the photovoltaic performance of DSCs were also investigated using intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS), incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate that the improvement of power conversion efficiency after compression post-treatment of ZnO photoelectrode can be attributed to its high photoelectron collection efficiency and effective electron transport. Under the optimized conditions, a full plastic D149-sensitized ZnO solar cell measured under illumination of 100 mW·cm−2 (AM 1.5G) presents an energy conversion efficiency of 3.76% with open-circuit voltage of 0.688 V, short-circuit current density of 8.55 mA·cm−2, and fill factor of 0.64. These results demonstrate that the one-step solid state reaction is a convenient and effective method for the synthesis of ZnO nanocrystals for use in plastic DSCs.

Abstract:Decreasing the recombination of photogenerated carriers is a major challenge for efficiently converting solar energy into chemical energy by photocatalysis. Here, we have demonstrated that growth of a polar GaN:ZnO solid solution single crystal along its polarization axis is beneficial to efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, owing to the periodic potential barriers and wells generated from the periodically positive and negative atom arrangements in crystal structure. Local charge imbalance caused by replacing Ga(3+) with Zn(2+) leads to a polarization vector in the {0 0 0 1} planes of GaN:ZnO solid solution, thus forming a 1 D electron transport path along [2 1‾ 1‾ 0] in the {0 0 0 1} planes of GaN:ZnO solid solution to decrease recombination. Shorting the hole-transport distance by synthesizing porous nanoplates can further decrease recombination under the polarization field and improve the performance of polar photocatalyst in photoreduction of CO2 into CH4 .

Abstract:Ag/ZnO nanocomposite photocatalysts with high photocatalytic performance were successfully synthesized via a facile sol-gel method. The prepared Ag/ZnO products were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, FT-IR, BET surface area, TG and DSC. Photodegradation experiments of the samples were carried out by choosing Methylene Blue (MB) as a model target under UV irradiation with homemade photocatalytic apparatus. Among these products, when the molar ratio of Ag to ZnO was fixed at 0.07 and the calcination temperature was around 450 °C, the obtained samples exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity.
