Abstract:A direct-triblock-copolymer templating method is demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous crystalline C-TiO2 (MCT) composites using phenolic resins and acid–base pairs [acidic TiCl4 and basic counterpart Ti(OC4H7)4] as carbon and titanium sources, respectively. The composites possess highly crystalline anatase pore walls that are “glued” by amorphous carbon, ordered mesostructure, high surface areas (∼200 m2/g), and large pore volumes (∼0.15 cm3/g). The titania content is as high as 87 wt%. MCT composite favors the immobilization of proteins and enhances the electrocatalytic properties in relation to the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.
Ordered Mesoporous CeO2-TiO2 Composites: Highly Efficient Photocatalysts for the Reduction of CO2 with H2O under Simulated Solar Irradiation

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous CeO2-TiO2 composites with 2D hexagonal structure and varied compositions were synthesized through a nanocasting route using ordered mesoporous SBA-15 as the template. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra analysis techniques were used to characterize the samples. It is observed that the obtained CeO2-TiO2 composites have ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructures with high specific surface area and hierarchical porosity. Introduction of CeO2 species can effectively extend the spectral response from UV to visible area and enhance the surface chemisorbed oxygen of the ordered mesoporous TiO2. Due to the peculiar composition and structural characteristics, these ordered mesoporous CeO2-TiO2 composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity in the reduction of CO2 with H2O under simulated solar irradiation.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbon-titania nanocomposites with nanocrystal-glass frameworks have been synthesized via the organic-inorganic-amphiphilic coassembly followed by the in situ crystallization technology. A soluble resol polymer was used as a carbon precursor, prehydrolyzed TiCl4 as an inorganic precursor, and triblock copolymer F127 as a template. The carbon-titania nanocomposites with controllable texture properties and composition can be obtained in a wide range from 20 to 80 wt% TiO2 by adjusting the initial mass ratios. The C-TiO2 nanocomposites with "bricked-mortar" frameworks exhibit highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure and high thermal stability up to 700 degrees C. The nanocomposites have high surface area (465 m(2) g(-1)) and large pore size (similar to 4.1 nm). Additionally, the nanocomposites show good performance in degradation of Rhodamine B due to the photocatalytic activity of the titania nanocrystals and the strong adsorptive capacity of the glasslike carbon.

Abstract:Cu-modified graphitic ordered mesoporous carbon supported TiO2 catalyst was synthesized based on a hard template method. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis techinques were used to characterize the sample. It was observed that copper and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were well dispersed in the Cu-modified mesoporous graphitic carbon, and the resulting composite with ordered mesostructure and high specific surface area exhibited an exceptionally high activity in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O under simulated solar irradiation.

Abstract:In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO2 was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO2-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd0 nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO2 as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO2-MMT80/PCN20@Pd0 showed a high surface area of 108.9 m2/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Abstract:Ordered SBA-15 mesoporous silica with incorporated titanium was successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal crystallization method. The characterization including powder X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, transmission electron microscope, temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrometer was performed to explore the physical and chemical structures of both the supports and the catalysts. The results showed that titanium was successfully incorporated into the mesoporous silica framework with a limited amount of titanium (Si/Ti > 20), and the mesoporous structure was retained. However, the increased titanium content inevitably resulted in the formation of anatase TiO2 particles on the support surface. The increased incorporated titanium strengthened the interactions between cobalt species and supports, which was favorable for the cobalt species dispersion, despite the limited cobalt oxide reducibility. The enhanced metal-support interactions were beneficial for the CO/H2 ratio at the active cobalt sites, which facilitated the formation of more C5+ hydrocarbons. This study provides a promising method for support modification with incorporated-heteroatoms for the rational development of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts.

Abstract:Crystalline mesoporous metal oxides have attracted considerable attention recently, but their catalytic applications have rarely been studied. In this work, a series of crystalline three-dimensional mesoporous metal oxides (i.e., CeO2, Co3O4, Cr2O3, CuO, Fe2O3, β-MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4, NiO, and NiCoMnO4) were prepared using the mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template. These ordered mesoporous metal oxides with highly crystalline walls were characterized by PXRD, TEM, N2 adsorption and evaluated as CO oxidation catalysts. These mesoporous materials, except for mesoporous Fe2O3, exhibit much higher catalytic activities than their bulk counterparts. In particular, mesoporous Co3O4, β-MnO2, and NiO show appreciable CO oxidation activity below 0 °C, and the catalytic activities of mesoporous β-MnO2, and NiO are even higher than those of their nanoparticulate counterparts with large surface areas. β-MnO2 is particularly interesting because it combines low cost and low toxicity with high activity (T 50 = 39 °C).
Three-dimensional Interconnected Mesoporous Anatase TiO2 Exhibiting Unique Photocatalytic Performances

Abstract:In this article, an ordered two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal mesoporous anatase crystals-silica nanocomposite was first synthesized using synchronous-assembly of surfactant and inorganic precursors molecules, and then a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected mesoporous anatase TiO2 was prepared via an "extracting silica" approach. The results show that the mesopore channels in our titania are highly connected by plenty of 3D uniform intrawall mesopores while retaining mesostructural integrity and regularity. The TiO2 prepared is completely anatase crystalline with uniform nanocrystals (13.0 nm in size) and a high specific surface area (similar to 145 m(2)/g). This method is mild, simple and can be easily repeatable. The photocatalytic degradation rates of Acid Red 1 (0.173 min(-1)) and microcystin-LR (2.57 min(-1)) on the interconnected mesoporous TiO2 are very high, which are 41.6 and 2.85 times higher than that of the parent sample; 29.2 and 7.20 times that of P25 photocatalyst, respectively. These results clearly demonstrated that the 3D interconnected mesostructure played a key role in the activity increments. In addition, our photocatalysts are considerably stable and reusable. To the best of our knowledge, such results have not been seen in the literature before. Furthermore, the fundamentals of this study would provide new insights for the rational design and preparation of 3D highly interlinked mesoporous metal-oxides with unique photocatalytic performances. Abstract:Herein, a high-performance Ag3PO4/TiO2@C composite photocatalyst was successfully fabricated through the unique structure and interface designs. Firstly, a novel three-dimensional layered carbon-supported titanium dioxides (TiO2@C) nanosheets (NSs) are fabricated by employing the new-type two-dimensional layered transition metal Ti3C2 MXene as carbon skeleton and homologous titanium source via a facile hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the structure characters of Ti3C2 MXene and in-situ growth, the as-prepared TiO2@C NSs own a large surface area and good interface contact. On this basis, taking advantage of the surface electronegativity of Ti3C2 MXene drove TiO2@C, Ag3PO4 nanoparticles are further combined with TiO2@C via an electrostatic self-assembly method to improve the light-harvesting ability. The electrostatic self-assembly process is beneficial to the uniform growth of Ag3PO4 nanoparticles and the formation of a good heterostructure interface between Ag3PO4 and TiO2@C. Therefore, the as-prepared Ag3PO4/TiO2@C composites as photocatalyst exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance, and the optimal photocatalytic degradation rate constant for methylene blue achieves 4.768 × 10–2 min−1. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of larger surface area, better light-harvesting ability, and superior charge transfer and separation characters. Additionally, the growth and optimization mechanisms are also deeply studied in the present paper.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials with crystalline frameworks have been widely explored in many fields due to their unique structure and crystalline feature, but accurate manipulations over crystalline scaffolds, mainly composed of uncontrolled polymorphs, are still lacking. Herein, we explored a controlled crystallization-driven monomicelle assembly approach to construct a type of uniform mesoporous TiO2 particles with atomically aligned single-crystal frameworks. The resultant mesoporous TiO2 single-crystal particles possess an angular shape similar to 80 nm in diameter, good mesoporosity (a high surface area of 112 m(2) g(-1) and a mean pore size at 8.3 nm), and highly oriented anatase frameworks. By adjusting the evaporation rate during assembly, such a facile solution-processed strategy further enables the regulation of the particle size and mesopore size without the destruction of the oriented crystallites. Such a combination of ordered mesoporosity and crystalline orientation provides both effective mass and charge transportation, leading to a significant increase in the hydrogen generation rate. A maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 12.5 mmol g(-1) h(-1) can be realized, along with great stability under solar light. Our study is envisaged to extend the possibility of mesoporous single crystal growth to a range of functional ceramics and semiconductors toward advanced applications.
Preparation of Ordered Mesoporous Tio2 Thin Film and Its Application in Methanol Catalytic Combustion

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous titania thin films were synthesized by evaporation induced self‐assembly process in the presence of Pluronic block copolymers P123 (EO20‐PO70‐EO20). The influence of several experimental parameters, including aging humidity, aging temperature, substrate properties and methods for organic templates removal, on the mesostructure of titania thin films was investigated in details. The mesoporous titania thin film supported Pt catalyst was prepared, and its methanol catalytic combustion performance was studied. The results showed that mesoporous titania thin film is an active support for catalyst. Mesoporous titania thin film supported platinum catalysts yields 70% methanol conversion at room temperature and 100% conversion at 100 °C. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.
Novel Tio2-Pt@Sio2 Nanocomposites With High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:This article reports a facile and controllable two-step method to construct TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), with small size and high surface energy, were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction process. The TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a reverse micro-emulsion method. SiO2 shell coated NPs were adopted for further photocatalytic reaction. Because of their small size and high surface energy, TiO2@SiO2 and TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites show higher photocatalytic activity than commercial Degussa P25. Compared with TiO2@SiO2, TiO2-Pt@SiO(2)nanocomposites have improved photocatalytic activity due to the Pt induced spatial separation of electrons and holes. The silica shells not only maintain the structure of the nanocomposites but also prevent their aggregation during the photocatalytic reactions, which is highly important for the good durability of the photocatalyst. This strategy is simple, albeit efficient, and can be extended to the synthesis of other composites of noble metals. It has opened a new window for the construction of hetero-nanocomposites with high activity and durability, which would serve as excellent models in catalytic systems of both theoretical and practical interest.
Synthesis of Supported TiO2/SBA-15 Catalysts and Their Performance on Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2

Abstract:TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts, TiO2 nanoparticles well dispersed on SBA-15 supporter, have been successfully obtained through a self-assembly aging, carboxylation and subsequent solvothermal process. Firstly, P123 (PEG-PPG-PEG), KCl, (2-cyanoethyl) triethoxysilane (CETES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were employed to form cyano-modified SBA-15 (CN/SBA-15) in 2.0 mol/L HCl solution by Self-assembly aging method. Secondly, carboxyl-modified SBA-15 (COOH/SBA-15) was got through carboxylation treatment in 48% H2SO4 solution at 95 degrees C for 24 h. Finally, highly dispersed TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts were successfully synthesized via solvothermal method at 220 degrees C for 12 h using COOH/SBA-15 and tetrabutyl titanate (TB) as raw materials. In order to remove the organic compounds and improve the crystallization of TiO2, the obtained TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts then were filtrated, washed by absolute ethanol for three times, dried at 80 degrees C and calcined at 550 degrees C for 4 h. Notably, the self-assembly and carboxylation process produced large number of good dispersive carboxyl groups (COOH) on SBA-15, which could effectively anchored TB molecules on SBA-15 to promise the highly dispersion of TiO2 on SBA-15. The obtained TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption and UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Above results indicate that the TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts exhibit large specific surface area and TiO2 on SBA-15 supporter is anatase phase, they are both play important roles in photocatalytic application. In the current manuscript, the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under UV light irradiation as a prober reaction was used to investigate the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts. It was found that the obtained catalysts performed high photocatalytic capacity for CO2 reduction, especially when the loading amount of TiO2 was around 16.5 wt% [n(COOH)/n(TB)=3], the methanol production got maximum which could reach 80 mu mol/g-catalyst after 6 h UV light irradiation. Compared with the catalysts which synthesized through simple impregnation method, our TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts showed the higher activity in photocatalytic reduction of CO2, owing to the better dispersion and crystallization.

Abstract:A hierarchically mesostructured TiO2/graphitic carbon composite photocatalyst with a high content of nanocrystalline TiO2 was prepared using a simple one-step nanocasting route. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize this photocatalyst. It was observed that the coexistence of silica and graphitic carbon during the high temperature treatment stabilized the crystalline phase and the size of the anatase TiO2 nanocrystals (5-7 nm in diameter), which were uniformly dispersed in the graphitic carbon matrix after silica removal. The obtained hierarchically mesostructured TiO2/graphitic carbon composite photocatalyst with a high specific surface area and a high surface concentration of hydroxyl groups exhibited considerably higher activity in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O under simulated solar irradiation compared to mesostructured anatase TiO2 prepared using a sol-gel method.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 has gained increasing interest because of its outstanding properties and promising applications in a wide range of fields. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of ordered mesoporous black TiO2 (OMBT) materials, which exhibit excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performances. In this case, the employment of a thermally stable and high-surface-area mesoporous TiO2 as the hydrogenation precursor is the key for fabricating the OMBT materials, which not only facilitate H2 gas diffusion into TiO2 and interaction with their structures but also maintain the ordered mesoporous structures as well as inhibit the phase transformation (from anatase to rutile) and crystal growth during hydrogenation at 500 °C. The resultant OMBT materials possess a relatively high surface area of ∼124 m(2) g(-1) and a large pore size and pore volume of ∼9.6 nm and 0.24 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. More importantly, the OMBT materials can extend the photoresponse from ultraviolet to visible and infrared light regions and exhibit a high solar-driven hydrogen production rate (136.2 μmol h(-1)), which is almost two times as high as that of pristine mesoporous TiO2 (76.6 μmol h(-1)).
