Abstract:We observed the group superluminal in C60 toluene solution by coherent population oscillation with input power of 60 mW from Ar+ laser at 514.5nm. Maximum advancement was 3.58ms, inferred a negative group velocity of -8.40m/s.

Abstract:The authors observed the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity in C-60 toluene solution firstly. The theoretical analysis was made based on density matrix model of superluminal propagation. The simulation result was well consistent with experimental measurement. The largest time advancement of 3.58 ms was got at 5.6x10(-4) mol/l of sample concentration; the corresponding group velocity is -0.28 m/s. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The authors experimentally observed the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity in C60 polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) firstly. The largest time advancement of 7.61ms was obtained at 1mg/cm3 of sample concentration, the corresponding group velocity was −0.657m/s. Fast light in C60 PMMA offers several advantages over liquids or vapors for a variety of possible applications: (i) easy for experimental measurement and practical applications (ii) easy for manufacture, (iii) sample concentration is another convenient parameter to vary the signal delay.

Abstract:We experimentally observed negative group velocity in C60 toluene solution at the wavelength of 532 nm for the first time. The observed time advancement of the modulated signal appears to be due to the RSA (reverse saturable absorption) effect of the C60 molecule. The largest time advancement of 71.65 ms was obtained with a C60 sample of 1.5-mm length with the concentration of 1.39×10-3 mol/l; the corresponding group velocity was -0.021 m/s. We could control the group velocity by adjusting the modulation frequency and the input intensity.

Abstract:Triplet state nonlinearity of C60 in toluene is studied using the Z-scan technique with 8 ns, 532 nm pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Compared with the Z-scan results of C60 in toluene and iodine in toluene with proper concentration, the solvent instantaneous nonlinearity and the thermal nonlinearity resulting from the C60 intersystem crossing and excited state absorption are estimated. The real part of the C60 triplet state molecular polarizability is obtained.

Abstract:Nonlinear refraction and scattering effect properties of C-60/toluene solution were studied by using the Z-scan technique and 532 nm laser delivering 4 nanosecond (ns) pulses. With single ns pulse, reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and negative nonlinear refraction were observed, and the nonlinear scattering effect in the solution could not be ignored when the pulse energy was large enough. The refraction cross-section of the singlet and triplet excited-state were calculated as eta(S1) = 8.02x10(-28) m(2), eta(T1) = 8.52x10(-28) m(2), respectively. The nonlinear scattering coefficient was also obtained.

Abstract:Excited state nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is studied using a picosecond time-resolved pump-probe system based on a 4f nonlinear imaging technique with the phase object. Negative nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is observed after zero-delay time besides normal nonlinear absorption. By using a five-energy-band model, both the change of refraction index per unit density of the first singlet excited state and the first triplet excited state of the C-60 molecule having a negative sign are determined. The nonlinear refraction, as well as the dynamics of neat toluene and its excited state contribution to the solution, is also investigated.

Abstract:The author observed superluminal phenomena in the transparent single-layer graphene oxide (GO) solution and studied the relationship between the advance time and the solution concentration or the power of the incident light. We learned that the time advancement can be modulated in a wider range by increasing the light power; both the group velocity and the time advancement decay nonlinearly as a function of the modulation frequency, which depends on the concentration of the GO solution and the power of the incident light. Abstract:Degenerate four-wave-mixing measurements on C-90 in CS2 with different concentrations were performed using 70 ps laser pulses at 0.532 mu m. The dependence of the conjugate signal intensity on the incident laser power and the concentration of C-90 were investigated, By optimizing experimental parameters, the second hyperpolarizability gamma(1111) of C-90 was determined to be (1.8 +/- 0.6) X 10(-30) esu, which is approximately eight times that of the C-60 molecule measured under identical conditions. Our results are in accord with the theoretical prediction that higher fullerenes should show larger nonlinear optical responses. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract:In Physics, causality is a fundamental postulation arising from the second law of thermodynamics. It states that, the cause of an event precedes its effect. In the context of Electromagnetics, the relativistic causality limits the upper bound of the velocity of information, which is carried by electromagnetic wave packets, to the speed of light in free space (c). In anomalously dispersive media (ADM), it has been shown that, wave packets appear to propagate with a superluminal or even negative group velocity. However, Sommerfeld and Brillouin pointed out that the "front" of such wave packets, known as the initial point of the Sommerfeld precursor, always travels at c. In this work, we investigate the negative-group-velocity transmission of half-sine wave packets. We experimentally observe the wave front and the distortion of modulated wave packets propagating with a negative group velocity in a passive artificial ADM in microwave regime. Different from previous literature on the propagation of superluminal Gaussian packets, strongly distorted sinusoidal packets with non-superluminal wave fronts were observed. This result agrees with Brillouin's assertion, i.e., the severe distortion of seemingly superluminal wave packets makes the definition of group velocity physically meaningless in the anomalously dispersive region.

Abstract:We report superluminal propagation in optical fibers using Brillouin lasing oscillation in a ring cavity. Negative group velocity propagation through a 10-m single mode fiber has been experimentally demonstrated. An advancement of 221.2 ns was observed before the input signal, which was achieved with a very high slope efficiency of 211: 3 ns/dB. This indicates that this way is suitable for long-distance low-loss superluminal propagation via optical fibers. Correspondingly, the group velocity is -0:151c and the group index is -6:636-the highest group velocity ever reported for optical fibers.

Abstract:Time-resolved degenerate four-wave mixing experiments were conducted on toluene solutions and film of C60 using the second harmonic generation of a 50 picosecond mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. A fast nonlinear optical response was observed from both C60 toluene solutions and C60 film, and another long-lived component was observed only from C60 toluene solutions. The near resonant third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of C60 estimated from the experimental result of the film is about (3.6��1.4)��10-10 esu.

Abstract:We have observed a dispersionlike absorption (or gain) spectrum at the D1 transition in a Rb vapor cell filled with a buffer gas, due to Zeeman coherence of the ground states in a double A configuration. Meanwhile, we have also observed superluminal pulse propagation. It is experimentally demonstrated that the front speed of a light pulse still equals the light speed c in vacuum, although the group velocity of the light pulse is (-2.2 +/- 0.6) x 10(4) m/s. Abstract:Negative group velocity superluminal propagation has been experimentally investigated based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a 10-m highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) ring cavity. The advancement of 365.8 ns with a high average slope efficiency of 118.9 ns/mw versus the output lasing power was observed. The maximum negative group velocity of -0.105c and the minimum group index of -9.499 have been achieved by using the HNLF with high Brillouin gain coefficient and the optimized 1/99 coupler ratio in the cavity. The tunability of negative group velocity and group index can be easily controlled by the input pump power and optical coupler ratio indicating potential applications for a highly advanced sensing scheme based on Brillouin oscillation superluminal propagation. Abstract:A novel method to control the group velocity of light propagation in a two-level atomic system without additional optical field is proposed. Numerical result and experimental data shows that by changing the magnetic field intensity and vapor temperature, the group velocity of probe light can be controlled in an appropriate region.
