Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The rate determining step of Z-scheme overall water splitting system is usually considered to be the charge carriers’ separation and transfer, which occurs between the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and the oxygen evolution photocatalyst (OEP). In this work, g-C3N4/ITO/Co-BiVO4 Z-scheme composite in which g-C3N4 as HEP, Co doped BiVO4 as OEP and ITO nanoparticles as conductive mediator is designed and fabricated. Without using any sacrificial agents, the g-C3N4/ITO/Co-BiVO4 composite exhibits 4 times higher than the g-C3N4/Co-BiVO4, with the H2 and O2 evolution rate of 95.41 and 40.23 μmol g−1h−1 under full arc irradiation. The increase in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the efficient carriers’ separation and transport induced by solid-state mediator ITO nanoparticles. In this work, a novel insight into rationally constructing effective all-solid-state Z-scheme system for overall water splitting will be given.

Abstract:Abstract So-called Z-scheme systems permit overall water splitting using narrow-bandgap photocatalysts. To boost the performance of such systems, it is necessary to enhance the intrinsic activities of the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst and oxygen evolution photocatalyst, promote electron transfer from the oxygen evolution photocatalyst to the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst, and suppress back reactions. The present work develop a high-performance oxysulfide photocatalyst, Sm 2 Ti 2 O 5 S 2 , as an hydrogen evolution photocatalyst for use in a Z-scheme overall water splitting system in combination with BiVO 4 as the oxygen evolution photocatalyst and reduced graphene oxide as the solid-state electron mediator. After surface modifications of the photocatalysts to promote charge separation and redox reactions, this system is able to split water into hydrogen and oxygen for more than 100 hours with a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.22%. In contrast to many existing photocatalytic systems, the water splitting activity of the present system is only minimally reduced by increasing the background pressure to 90 kPa. These results suggest characteristics suitable for applications under practical operating conditions.

Abstract:Efficient water splitting for H2 evolution over semiconductor photocatalysts is highly attractive in the field of clean energy. It is of great significance to construct heterojunctions, among which the direct Z-scheme nanocomposite photocatalyst provides effective separation of photo-generated carriers to boost the photocatalytic performance. Herein, Z-scheme hydrated tungsten trioxide/ZnIn2S4 is fabricated via an in-situ hydrothermal method where ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown on WO3⋅xH2O. The close contact between WO3⋅0.5H2O and WO3⋅0.33H2O as well as ZnIn2S4 improve the charge carrier separation and migration in the photocatalyst, where the strong reducing electrons in the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 and the strong oxidizing holes in the valence band of WO3⋅0.33H2O are retained, leading to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production. The obtained WO3⋅xH2O/ZnIn2S4 shows an excellent H2 production rate of 7200 μmol g-1h-1, which is 11 times higher than pure ZnIn2S4. To the best of our knowledge, this value is higher than most of the WO3-based noble metal-free semiconductor photocatalysts. The improved stability and activity are attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can markedly accelerate the interfacial charge separation for surface reaction. This work offers a promising strategy towards the design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst to suppress electron-hole recombination and optimize redox potential.
Integrated Z‐Scheme Nanosystem Based on Metal Sulfide Nanorods for Efficient Photocatalytic Pure Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing efficient metal sulfides for pure water splitting is a challenging topic in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, inspired by natural photosynthesis, an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme photocatalyst was constructed with Cd0.9Zn0.1S (CZS) for water reduction, red phosphorus (RP) for water oxidation, and metallic CoP as the electron mediator. RP@CoP core‐shell nanostructures were uniformly attached on the CZS nanorods, which gave rise to multiple monodispersed nanojunctions. The integrated Z‐scheme nanosystem exhibited an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.4 % at 420 nm for pure water splitting. Theoretical analysis and femtosecond transient absorption results revealed that the impressive performance was mainly due to efficient hole transfer of CZS, resulting from the intimate atomic contacts between CoP mediator and photocatalysts, together with favorable band alignment. Meanwhile, the multiple monodispersed Z‐scheme nanojunctions could provide abundant reaction sites, which was also important for the boosted activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting can be achieved using Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis by combining dissimilar semiconductors in series. However, coupling well-suited H2- and O2-evolving components remains challenging. Here, we fabricate a Z-scheme system for photocatalytic overall water splitting based on boron-doped, nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. We prepare ultrathin carbon nitride nanosheets with varying levels of boron dopants and nitrogen defects, which leads to nanosheets that can act as either H2- or O2-evolving photocatalysts. Using an electrostatic self-assembly strategy, the nanosheets are coupled to obtain a 2D/2D polymeric heterostructure. Owing to their ultrathin nanostructures, strong interfacial interaction and staggered band alignment, a Z-scheme route for efficient charge-carrier separation and transfer is realized. The obtained heterostructure achieves stoichiometric H2 and O2 evolution in the presence of Pt and Co(OH)2 co-catalysts, and the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency reaches 1.16% under one-sun illumination.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is considered one of the most important and appealing approaches for the production of green H2 to address the global energy demand. The utmost possible form of artificial photosynthesis is a two-step photoexcitation known as "Z-scheme", which mimics the natural photosystem. This process solely relies on the effective coupling and suitable band positions of semiconductors (SCs) and redox mediators for the purpose to catalyze the surface chemical reactions and significantly deter the backward reaction. In recent years, the Z-scheme strategies and their key role have been studied progressively through experimental approaches. In addition, theoretical studies based on density functional theory have provided detailed insight into the mechanistic aspects of some breathtakingly complex problems associated with hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. In this context, this critical review gives an overview of the fundamentals of Z-scheme photocatalysis, including both theoretical and experimental advancements in the field of photocatalytic water splitting, and suggests future perspectives.

Abstract:Although photocatalytic overall water splitting is a potential technology for converting solar energy into chemical fuel, the widely reported solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency is around 1%, indicating unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Here, a novel photocatalyst material is designed and a whole reaction system is constructed, resulting in an integrative photothermal–photocatalytic Z‐scheme overall water splitting reaction system. In terms of materials design, a novel sulfur‐deficient ZnIn2S4/oxygen‐deficient WO3 (ZIS–WO) hybrid with surface‐carbonized wood (C‐wood) is reported. The ZIS–WO hybrid with sulfur and oxygen vacancies promotes the adsorption of visible light and the separation of charge carriers. The conductive C‐wood is strategically used as an additional electron bridge to accelerate electron transfer. In terms of system construction, the C‐wood exploits the photothermal effect to change the solid/liquid/gas triphase system to a solid/gas biphase system by transforming liquid water into steam, which drastically restrains carrier recombination, and decreases the photocatalytic reaction barrier. The H2 and O2 production rates in the proposed system are approximately 169.2 and 82.5 µmol h–1 under air mass (AM) 1.5 light irradiation, and the corresponding solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency is as high as 1.52%. The study from photocatalyst design to reaction system construct opens a new insight for versatile and high‐performance photocatalytic overall water splitting. A high‐performance and scalable photothermal/photocatalytic Z‐scheme overall water splitting reaction system composed of a novel photocatalyst (sulfur‐deficient ZnIn2S4/oxygen‐deficient WO3 with surface‐carbonized wood is reported. Under the synthetic effects of a novel materials design and a whole reaction system construct, a high solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency of 1.52% is achieved.

A Z-scheme photosensitive MOC/g-C3N4 composite catalyst for efficient visible-light driven half and overall water splitting

Abstract:The construction of Z-scheme heterojunction composite catalysts for overall water splitting is promising. Herein, a triangle-shaped prismatic metal–organic cage MOC-Q3 consisting of two photosensitive ligands and three catalytic Pd 2+ centers is synthesized as an intramolecular photocatalytic molecular device (IPMD) to conduct a photocatalytic light-to-fuel reaction. MOC-Q3 is then coupled with graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) to form a composite catalyst by intermolecular π–π stacking through quasi-2D/2D contact. And the charge transfers at the MOC-Q3/g-C 3 N 4 interface are proven to follow a Z-scheme pathway by radical trapping experiments and theoretical calculations. The optimized 11 wt% MOC-Q3/g-C 3 N 4 catalyst exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity of 50.1 mmol h −1 g −1 , one of the highest values reported among g-C 3 N 4 -based Z-scheme systems in recent years. And a high turnover number (TON) of 363 740 based on the MOC moles is achieved in a prolonged photocatalytic experiment lasting 32 h. Furthermore, the overall water splitting reaction was successfully conducted using MOC-Q3/g-C 3 N 4 in combination with a classical water oxidation catalyst (WOC) IrO 2 , without the addition of any sacrificial agent, yielding H 2 and O 2 amounts of 400.7 and 200.5 μmol g −1 within 5 h, respectively. This study presents an inspiring approach of combining IPMDs and g-C 3 N 4 to prepare highly efficient composite catalysts for visible light-driven H 2 evolution and overall water splitting.

Abstract:The stoichiometric water splitting using a solar-driven Z-scheme approach is an emerging field of interest to address the increasing renewable energy demand and environmental concerns. So far, the reported Z-scheme must comprise two populations of photocatalysts. In the present work, only tungsten oxides are used to construct a robust Z-scheme system for complete visible-driven water splitting in both neutral and alkaline solutions, where sodium tungsten oxide bronze (Na0.56WO3-x) is used as a H2 evolution photocatalyst and two-dimensional (2D) tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets as an O2 evolution photocatalyst. This system efficiently produces H2 (14 μmol h-1) and O2 (6.9 μmol h-1) at an ideal molar ratio of 2:1 in an aqueous solution driven by light, resulting in a remarkably high apparent quantum yield of 6.06% at 420 nm under neutral conditions. This exceptional selective H2 and O2 production is due to the preferential adsorption of iodide (I-) on Na0.56WO3-x and iodate (IO3-) on WO3, which is evidenced by both experiments and density functional theory calculation. The present liquid Z-scheme in the presence of efficient shuttle molecules promises a separated H2 and O2 evolution by applying a dual-bed particle suspension system, thus a safe photochemical process.

Bimetallic Pd/Co Embedded in Two-Dimensional Carbon-Nitride for Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Two-dimensional s-triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) material with a band gap of 3.18 eV has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for water splitting. Here, we propose a Z-scheme photocatalyst by embedding Pd(OH)(2)- and Co(OH)(2)-groups in different parts of g-CN simultaneously. Density functional theory calculations show that it extends solar light absorption of g-CN into visible and infrared regions, realizes efficient charge separation, and can catalyze water splitting to produce O-2 and H-2, respectively. The staggered band alignment meets the requirement of the Z-scheme. Importantly, ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the photogenerated hole evolution accords with anticipation for subsequent water-splitting reactions. The computed Gibbs-free energy and overpotentials confirm the feasibility of hydrogen evolution reactions on the Co-centered fragment and oxygen evolution reactions on the Pd-centered fragment, respectively. It is expected that this new Z-scheme model designed on a single material platform may provide an alternative way for achieving efficient photodriven water splitting.
Noble‐Metal‐Free Janus‐like Structures by Cation Exchange for Z‐Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting under Broadband Light Irradiation

Abstract:AbstractZ‐scheme water splitting is a promising approach based on high‐performance photocatalysis by harvesting broadband solar energy. Its efficiency depends on the well‐defined interfaces between two semiconductors for the charge kinetics and their exposed surfaces for chemical reactions. Herein, we report a facile cation‐exchange approach to obtain compounds with both properties without the need for noble metals by forming Janus‐like structures consisting of γ‐MnS and Cu7S4 with high‐quality interfaces. The Janus‐like γ‐MnS/Cu7S4 structures displayed dramatically enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production rates of up to 718 μmol g−1 h−1 under full‐spectrum irradiation. Upon further integration with an MnOx oxygen‐evolution cocatalyst, overall water splitting was accomplished with the Janus structures. This work provides insight into the surface and interface design of hybrid photocatalysts, and offers a noble‐metal‐free approach to broadband photocatalytic hydrogen production.
Highly Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution from Water Using Visible Light and Structure‐Controlled Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Abstract:AbstractThe major challenge of photocatalytic water splitting, the prototypical reaction for the direct production of hydrogen by using solar energy, is to develop low‐cost yet highly efficient and stable semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, an effective strategy for synthesizing extremely active graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) from a low‐cost precursor, urea, is reported. The g‐C3N4 exhibits an extraordinary hydrogen‐evolution rate (ca. 20 000 μmol h−1 g−1 under full arc), which leads to a high turnover number (TON) of over 641 after 6 h. The reaction proceeds for more than 30 h without activity loss and results in an internal quantum yield of 26.5 % under visible light, which is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that observed for any other existing g‐C3N4 photocatalysts. Furthermore, it was found by experimental analysis and DFT calculations that as the degree of polymerization increases and the proton concentration decreases, the hydrogen‐evolution rate is significantly enhanced.

Abstract:The charge transfer within heterojunction is crucial for the efficiency and stability of photocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, InVO4 nanosheets have been employed as a support for the lateral epitaxial growth of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets to produce hierarchical InVO4@ZnIn2S4 (InVZ) heterojunctions. The distinct branching heterostructure facilitates active site exposure and mass transfer, further boosting the participation of ZnIn2S4 and InVO4 for proton reduction and water oxidation, respectively. The unique Z-scheme modulated charge transfer, visualized by simulation and in situ analysis, has been proved to promote the spatial separation of photoexcited charges and strengthen the anti-photocorrosion capability of InVZ. The optimized InVZ heterojunction presents improved OWS (153.3 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) for H-2 and 76.9 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) for O-2) and competitive H-2 production (21090 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)). Even after 20 times (100 h) of cycle experiment, it still holds more than 88% OWS activity and a complete structure.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting can be achieved using Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis by combining dissimilar semiconductors in series. However, coupling well-suited H 2 - and O 2 -evolving components remains challenging. Here, we fabricate a Z-scheme system for photocatalytic overall water splitting based on boron-doped, nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. We prepare ultrathin carbon nitride nanosheets with varying levels of boron dopants and nitrogen defects, which leads to nanosheets that can act as either H 2 - or O 2 -evolving photocatalysts. Using an electrostatic self-assembly strategy, the nanosheets are coupled to obtain a 2D/2D polymeric heterostructure. Owing to their ultrathin nanostructures, strong interfacial interaction and staggered band alignment, a Z-scheme route for efficient charge-carrier separation and transfer is realized. The obtained heterostructure achieves stoichiometric H 2 and O 2 evolution in the presence of Pt and Co(OH) 2 co-catalysts, and the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency reaches 1.16% under one-sun illumination.
Interfacial Coupling Induced Direct Z-scheme Water Splitting in Metal-Free Photocatalyst: C3N/g-C3N4 Heterojunctions

Abstract:Mimicking the natural photosynthesis in green plants, artificial Z-scheme photocatalysis enables more efficient utilization of solar energy for photocatalytic water splitting. Most currently designed g-C3N4-based Z-scheme heterojunctions are usually based on metal-containing semiconductor photocatalysts, thus exploiting metal-free photocatalysts for Z-scheme water splitting is of huge interest. Herein, we propose two metal-free C3N/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with the C3N monolayer covering g-C3N4 sheet (monolayer or bilayer) and systematically explore their electronic structures, charge distributions and photocatalytic properties by performing extensive hybrid density functional calculations. We clearly reveal that the relative strong built-in electric fields around their respective interface regions, caused by the charge transfer from C3N monolayer to g-C3N4 monolayer or bilayer, result in the bands bending, renders the transfer of photogenerated carriers in these two heterojunctions following the Z-scheme instead of the type-II pathway. Moreover, the photogenerated electrons and holes in these two C3N/g-C3N4 heterojunctions can not only be efficiently separated, but also have strong redox abilities for water oxidation and reduction. Compared with the isolated g-C3N4 sheets, the light absorption in visible to near-infrared region are significantly enhanced in these proposed heterojunctions. These theoretical findings suggest that these proposed metal-free C3N/g-C3N4 heterojunctions are promising direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for solar water splitting.
