Abstract:In this work, dynamic mechanical properties of the grown bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers were investigated. BC pellicles were fabricated using bacterial fermentation (Gluconacetobacter xylinus). The morphology results confirmed that the dried BC at ambient conditions could be categorized as a xerogel. The thermal dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated that the bound water in bacterial cellulose structure had a very significant effect on thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of BC pellicles. The results of dehydration kinetics study showed that the main mechanism governing water loss of BC was Fickian diffusion. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the BC dried at 25 °C (ambient temperature) and 105 °C were estimated − 33 and − 18 °C, respectively. This discrepancy can be attributed to the plasticizing effect of the bound water of BC dried at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the results indicated that its modulus drop smaller than one order of magnitude can be attributed to its high crystalline nature. The storage modulus versus frequency increased due to the limitation of the relaxation process of the polymer chains. Moreover, the relaxation time distribution was achieved from the slope of the modulus master curve versus logarithmic frequency. As a result, BC exhibited a solid-like behavior.

Abstract:Hydrophilic nanofibers derivate from bacterial cellulose (nf-BC) were compounded with PVA colloidal sol to form physical crosslinking hybrid hydrogels. With the hydrophilic and hydrogen bonding interaction between the groups of PVA and nf-BC during the composite gel phase transformation process, a regular and uniform distributed porous structure was formed which interconnected through fibrous funicular cords composed of PVA gel along nf-BC orientation by controlling the content of nf-BC and gel transition condition. The micro-morphology, chemical structure, crystallinity and mechanical properties of the nf-BC/PVA hydrogels changed with the different proportion and distribution of nf-BC. It has been verified that hydrophilic nf-BC acts as “crosslinking agent” and reinforced phase which can guide the composite hydrogels to form more ordered and compact porous structure, via enhancing the interaction of hydrogen bonds and physical crosslinking points between nf-BC and PVA macromolecule, finally resulted in the enhancement of their mechanical performances. The composite hydrogels have broad application prospects in the field of medicine, such as artificial cartilage, blood vessel, wound dressing and so on.

Abstract:Composite hydrogel films of bacterial cellulose/collagen/polyvinyl alcohol were prepared by soaking method using bacterial cellulose hydrogel (BC) was as the base material, collagen (COL) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were introduced as the reinforcement material to further improve the tensile strength especially elongation at break. Morphology, mechanical property, and thermal stability of composite hydrogel films were also investigated. The swelling behavior was studied using Schott's second-order swelling model in detail. Research results show that BC/PVA/COL composite showed 181.9 % improvement in elongation at break to that of BC. It further improved the tensile strength of the obtained BC/PVA/COL composite film by 12.9% after crosslinking treatment. Importantly, further investigation demonstrated that the structural stability and thermal stability of the composite hydrogel films were remarkably enhanced. Swelling behavior of BC and the composite nanofiber hydrogel films in DI water followed the Schott's second-order swelling model, the swelling of composites significantly reduced after crosslinking treatment.

Abstract:Microscopic structure and infiltrating water absorbability of nano bacterial cellulose(BC)in the dehydration process will change greatly.BC membranes were dried by five different dehydration methods:natural drying, microwave drying,freeze drying,double roll drying,and centrifugal drying.The water reabsorbability and microstructure changes as well as surface infiltrating of different dehydrated samples were investigated.Dynamics of their water absorbability was also discussed.The results show that specimens which maintain the 3D nano-network well have good hydrophilism.Frozen drying samples have the best water infiltration,of which water absorbability reaches 108 times of the original sample mass,while centrifugal drying samples has a inferior water absorbability. Water absorbability of other samples is subject to different degree of damage(10~25 times).According to dynamics analysis,it is found that water adsorption and swelling process follow Fickian diffusion law,BC with better 3D network structure has the larger diffusion coefficient,leading to better water absorbability.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) presents significant promise as a biomaterial, boasting unique qualities such as exceptional cellulose purity, robust mechanical strength, heightened crystalline structure, and biodegradability. Several studies have highlighted specific effects, such as the impact of dehydration/rehydration on BC tensile strength, the influence of polymer treatment methods on mechanical properties, the correlation between microorganism type, drying method, and Young's modulus value, and the relationship between culture medium composition, pH, and crystallinity. Drying methods are crucial to the structure, performance, and application of BC films. Research findings indicate that the method used for drying can influence the mechanical properties of BC films, including parameters such as tensile strength, Young's modulus, and water absorption capacity, as well as the micromorphology, crystallinity, and thermal characteristics of the material. Abstract:Abstract An investigation of the molecular interaction within a hydrogel system was conducted using molecular dynamics simulation, and the interaction mechanism of a polyacrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol (PAM/PVA) hydrogel system was examined specifically at the molecular level. Several characteristics of the PAM/PVA composite hydrogel system that are largely dependent on water content and temperature were studied in this paper, such as cohesive energy density, binding energy, mechanical properties and pair correlation function. The cohesive energy density and binding energy of the hydrogel system increased with higher water content. Results also showed that increased temperatures led to a decrease in the cohesive energy density of the system, while binding energy remained unchanged. The mechanical properties of the system were evaluated by analyzing the static mechanic performance. Results showed that elastic coefficients, engineering modulus and ductility decreased with increasing water content and temperature. In addition, analysis of the pair correlation function revealed mainly hydrogen bonding interactions between H 2 O molecules and surrounding atoms or functional groups. Results also indicated that the strength of these hydrogen bonds was O water >O PVA >O PAM >N PAM , confirming both the potential and the difficulty of hydrogen bond formation. The aforementioned findings help in understanding the interaction mechanisms between the components of a hydrogel system and in demonstrating the effects of water content and temperature on the PAM/PVA hydrogel system, which provides useful information on the possible operating windows of a biomedical hydrogel-making process.

Abstract:<p>The unique mechanical properties of hydrated bacterial cellulose make it suitable for biomedical applications. This study evaluates the effect of concentrated sodium hydroxide treatment on the structural and mechanical properties of bacterial cellulose hydrogels using rheological, tensile, and compression tests combined with mathematical modelling. Bacterial cellulose hydrogels show a concentration-dependent and irreversible reduction in shear moduli, compression, and tensile strength after alkaline treatment. Applying a poroelastic biphasic model to through-thickness compressive stress-relaxation tests showed the alkaline treatment to induce no significant change in axial compression, an effect was observed in the radial direction, potentially due to the escape of water from within the hydrogel. Scanning electron microscopy showed a more porous structure of bacterial cellulose. These results show how concentration-dependent alkaline treatment induces selective weakening of intramolecular interactions between cellulose fibres, allowing the opportunity to precisely tune the mechanical properties for specific biomedical application, e.g., faster-degradable materials.</p>

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to study the influence of solvents on the structure and mechanical properties of physically crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gels. Firstly, three kinds of PVA precursor gels were made by adding water, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a mixture of DMSO and water (4:1 by weight), respectively. The solvents in the precursor gels were then exchanged with water to obtain three kinds of PVA hydrogels. Solvent in the precursor gel with a mixture of DMSO and water was also exchanged with ethanol and DMSO, respectively. It was found that the tensile strength and failure strain of the PVA hydrogel prepared from precursor gel with a mixture of DMSO and water was the highest, and the polymer network was more homogeneous than the other two PVA hydrogels. The polymer network of PVA gel with ethanol or with DMSO was more heterogenous than with water, and the tensile strength and failure strain were much lower. The torsional activity of polymer chains of PVA gel with ethanol was much stronger than PVA gel with water and DMSO.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed on the physically crosslinking poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to study the deformation mechanisms under uniaxial tensile conditions. The distributions of hydroxyl oxygens and dihedral angle and the number of hydrogen bonds have been analysed to study the structure of the hydrogel. The water content and temperature dependency of mechanical properties have been investigated. The energy contributions from the partially united atom potential have been calculated as a function of strain. It is found that the stress–strain curve comprises toe region, linear region and yield and failure region which is close to most biomaterials. In the toe and yield region, all the contributions to the internal energy change a little. However, in the linear region, the bond stretching and angle bending energy increase rapidly and mainly dominate the region, and the energy increases more rapidly with the increasing water content but the decreasing temperature. The degree of crosslinking decreases with the increasing deformation. The polymer chains occur significant torsional activity in the toe region. Hydrogen bonds are stable in the toe and yield region, but the hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and waters decrease in the linear region.

Abstract:<p>The presence of water molecules can significantly determine the macroscopic mechanical property and microscopic chain dynamics of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). However, to date it has remained fully understood the molecular mechanism behind experimentally and theoretically. Herein, we systematically examine the effect of water contents on the mechanical property, glass transition, free volume, and intermolecular interactions by combining experimental and MD simulation. Our results show that the presence of water significantly reduces the mechanical strength of PVA, and only 1.8 wt% of water reduces the tensile strength by ~32% but notably increases the plasticity of PVA by ~2.5 times. Meanwhile, the inclusion of water remarkably lowers the glass transition temperature, increases free volume, and promotes the relaxation and mobility of PVA chains. This is mainly because the presence of water gives rise to both the plasticization and even lubricating effect on the PVA chains. This work unravels how water governs the mechanical performances of the PVA.</p>

Abstract:Regenerated cellulose (RCE)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite hydrogels were successfully prepared via physical repeated freezing and thawing method. The structure and properties of the RCE/PVA composite hydrogel were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical and swelling tests. The results revealed that a novel compact dual-network structure was formed between the cross-linked cellulose network and PVA matrix, which can strongly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite hydrogels as expected. Compared with neat PVA hydrogels, a 611% increase in tensile strength of RCE/PVA composite hydrogel from 0.09 to 0.64 MPa and 643% improvement in compressive strength from 0.07 to 0.52 MPa were achieved with the addition of 4 wt% of cellulose. The presence of cellulose is also beneficial to the elasticity of PVA hydrogels. With the incorporation of RCE, the composite hydrogels perform better shape recovery after compression test. Moreover, the addition of RCE has improved the swelling, water-absorbing, and water-retaining properties of the PVA hydrogels significantly.

Abstract:Bacterial nano-cellulose (BC) membranes of high purity, ultrafine network architecture and excellent biocompatibility were used to reinforce the poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels, which were prepared by physical method of freezing and thawing. The mechanical properties of the BC/PVA composite hydrogels were investigated, the mass percent of PVA, the number of BC layers and some other conditions like pre-treatment method of BC membranes were considered in the preparation process. The mechanical properties of the BC/PVA composite hydrogels were tested by tensile testing machine, the fracture surface of the composite hydrogels and the bonding situation between the BC nano-cellulose membrane and the PVA hydrogel were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the BC/PVA composite hydrogels have excellent mechanical properties, the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel reaches to 1. 74 MPa,and the modulus reaches to 7. 82 MPa, when the BC/PVA composite hydrogels are constituted by 15 wt% PVA and two layers of BC membranes. The SEM images show that the interface of the prepared composite hydrogels exhibits excellent bonding.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a pure biopolymer with abundant sources. BC has been used in wound dressings, artificial blood vessels, bone tissue engineering, and other applications because of its microporosity, superior water retention, thermal stability, and biocompatibility. The tensile strength of pure BC in wet state is weak, and the water holding capacity is above 90%, which limits its application. However, the mechanical properties of dehydrated BC are excellent at the expense of toughness, which is not enough to meet the demand of high additional-value materials, such as high strength flexible electronic device substrate, wearable electronic devices, vibration film for microphone and earphone, and others. Therefore, it is of great importance to systematically investigate the strategies to improve the mechanical properties of BC. Herein, this paper demonstrates the intrinsic factors affecting the mechanical properties of BC, along with the strategies to enhance the mechanical properties. Compared with the well-known adhesion reinforcement and chemical modification, six strategies to enhance the mechanical properties were discussed thoroughly in this paper. In addition, layer-by-layer self-assembly and orderly arrangement of fibrils are proposed in this paper to improve the mechanical properties of BC, which have not been described in detail in previous literature.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In order to control complex motion behavior in organisms, most biological tissues have highly oriented structures and anisotropic mechanical properties, such as articular cartilage, muscle, skin and blood vessel. In this study, inspired by the directional structure and excellent mechanical properties of biological soft tissues, polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels with different contents of sodium alginate were prepared by combining freeze-thaw and prestretching methods. Compared with SEM images without pre-stretch hydrogels, there are obvious ordered pore structures in the pre-stretch samples along the tensile direction, and the network structure becomes denser. XRD and FTI R results indicate that the introduction of SA and CMC increases the number of internal hydrogen bond and forms new covalent bonds. The tensile strength of the hydrogel without annealing and stretching treatments is only 0.41MPa. After annealing and stretching treatments, the tensile strength of the hydrogel is increased to 0.93MPa. Furthermore, the creep deformation of hydrogel was reduced from 1.08 mm to 0.27 mm by annealing and stretching treatments. To sum up, these results suggested that PVA/SA/CMC composite hydrogels with oriented structure might have potential applications in soft tissue repair and other biomaterials.

The effects of two biocompatible plasticizers on the performance of dry bacterial cellulose membrane: a comparative study

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) has unique properties and is widely applied as wound dressings. Dry BC membranes have better stability and longer storage time, but are poor in gas permeability and water absorption. To solve the problems with dry BC, we prepared two different plasticized dry BC membranes using two biocompatible plasticizers with different molecular weight and hydroxyl content, namely glycerol (G) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The different effects of the two plasticizers on the structure and performance of dry BC were systematically compared and analyzed. The plasticized dry BC membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermo-gravimetry, etc. The elongation at break for BC/2%G and BC/2%PEG were 8.1 and 12.5 times that of dry BC, respectively. BC/2%G had a water absorption of 4560%, and a water retention rate of 2468%, and those for BC/2%PEG were 4690% and 1972%, respectively. The highly porous structure of the plasticized dry BC membranes effectively enhanced the water vapor transmission rate of the membranes. The different effects of the two plasticizers can be ascribed to the differences in molecule size, hydroxyl content, hydrogen bond interaction, etc. The plasticized dry BC membranes showed excellent resistance to bacteria, which were 99.8% for BC/G and 99.9% for BC/PEG. The performance of the two plasticized dry BC membranes can be tuned to adapt to different applications.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Hydrogels composed of natural and synthetic polymers have considerable potential for use in diverse areas such as biomedical applications and water purification. This is primarily because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity. The widespread usage of composite hydrogels is hindered by a lack of simultaneous properties, such as high strength and low swelling rate. Herein, we report the preparation of novel hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)–intercalated agar polymer networks physically crosslinked with tannic acid. The hydrogel was subjected to multiple freeze/thaw (F/T) cycles (1, 3, and 5), and it was found to exhibit the highest strength after 5 F/T cycles. After 1 F/T cycle, the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel reached 1.56 MPa with a 1.0 wt% crosslinker, whereas after 5 F/T cycles, it increased to 3.77 MPa with a reduced amount (0.75 wt%) of the crosslinker. In addition, the swelling ability decreased upon increasing the crosslinker content and number of F/T cycles. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrated excellent water retention and a strong ability to adhere to different substrates. We have successfully implemented an innovative approach to improve the mechanical properties of PVA-based hydrogels by combining the use of tannic acid as a cross-linking agent and multiple F/T cycles. The developed hydrogels are expected to facilitate new developments in hydrogel technology, thus impacting diverse fields such as biomedical (wound dressing and artificial cartilage).

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer that can be used to make hydrogels for biomedical applications as well as biodegradable bags and films; however, compared to other plastics currently used for containers, it lacks mechanical strength, thermal stability, and can easily absorb water from humid environments. Although mechanical improvement has been observed by blending PVA with collagen in a hybrid hydrogel, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the molecular mechanism, and it is not clear whether the improvement is limited to a hydrated state. Here, using classical molecular dynamics simulations based on fully atomistic models, we develop the equilibrated molecular structure of PVA with collagen and characterize its mechanics. We show that by interacting with a collagen molecule, PVA is equilibrated to a more ordered structure with each residue interacting with the near neighbors by forming more hydrogen bonds locally, making the structure stiffer than pure PVA. The structure shows higher thermal stability before melting, as well as higher rigidity in water. Our results provide the mechanism of the mechanical advantages of hybrid PVA-collagen polymer. The study demonstrates that the structure and mechanics of a synthetic polymer can be tuned by a tiny amount of a natural polymer at the molecular interface. Moreover, it may shed light on identifying a way to improve the mechanics of biodegradable polymer materials without adding much cost, which is crucial for environmental safety. Blending natural and synthetic polymers (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol [PVA] and collagen in a hybrid hydrogel) has shown advantages in polymer mechanics, but there is a lack of fundamental understanding. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on fully atomistic models, we develop the equilibrated structure of the PVA with collagen and characterize its mechanics. We show that by interacting with a collagen molecule, PVA is equilibrated to a more ordered structure with each residue interacting with the near neighbors by forming more H-bonds locally and the structure is stiffer than pure PVA. Moreover, the structure shows a higher thermal stability before the melting point of PVA, as well as higher rigidity in water. Our results demonstrate that the structure and mechanics of a synthetic polymer can be tuned by a tiny amount of a natural polymer at the molecular interface. It provides the mechanism of the mechanical advantages as experimentally observed. This study paves the way for the multiscale modeling and mechanical design of the hybrid polymer material. It sheds light on identifying a way to improve the mechanics of biodegradable materials without adding much cost for both material functionality and environmental safety.

Abstract:Polymer gels, defined either from the structural point of view (structural gel) or by their mechanical properties (mechanical gel), are ubiquitous in our daily life. In our previous work (J. Phys. Chem. B, 2011, 115, 11345), we reported that, the mechanical gel formed by strong solvophobic ABA block copolymers with fixed chain compositions shows a strong mechanical response, which meant the formed gel had a high modulus. In this work, we focus on the effect of chain composition on the relationship between structural gel and mechanical gel, where the chain length of block copolymer is lower than its entanglement chain length for simplicity. Our results show that the chain composition has a great effect on the mechanical response of the ABA copolymer solutions with a strong solvophobicity. On the other hand, for the structural gel formed by weak solvophobic block polymers, we do not find any strong mechanical responses even we change the chain composition in a wide range. Moreover, we find three typical gelation processes, companied with three kinds of different mechanical responses. These results may provide us an effective method to control the mechanical property of a polymer gel as expected.

Abstract:The primary plant cell wall (PCW) is a specialized structure composed predominantly of cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectin. While the role of cellulose and hemicelluloses in the formation of the PCW scaffold is undeniable, the mechanisms of how hemicelluloses determine the mechanical properties of PCW remain debatable. Thus, we produced bacterial cellulose–hemicellulose hydrogels as PCW analogues, incorporated with hemicelluloses. Next, we treated samples with hemicellulose degrading enzymes, and explored its structural and mechanical properties. As suggested, difference of hemicelluloses in structure and chemical composition resulted in a variety of the properties studied. By analyzing all the direct and indirect evidences we have found that glucomannan, xyloglucan and arabinoxylan increased the width of cellulose fibers both by hemicellulose surface deposition and fiber entrapment. Arabinoxylan increased stresses and moduli of the hydrogel by its reinforcing effect, while for xylan, increase in mechanical properties was determined by establishment of stiff cellulose–cellulose junctions. In contrast, increasing content of xyloglucan decreased stresses and moduli of hydrogel by its weak interactions with cellulose, while glucomannan altered cellulose network formation via surface deposition, decreasing its strength. The current results provide evidence for structure–dependent mechanisms of cellulose–hemicellulose interactions, suggesting the specific structural role of the latter.
