Abstract:We establish the exact moduli of non-differentiability of Gaussian random fields with stationary increments. As an application of the result, we prove that the uniform Holder condition for the maximum local times of Gaussian random fields with stationary increments obtained in Xiao (1997) is optimal. These results are applicable to fractional Riesz-Bessel processes and stationary Gaussian random fields in the Matern and Cauchy classes.

In particular we obtain the law of iterated logarithm and the Book-Shore type theorem for the increments of a d-dimensional Gaussian process, via estimating upper bounds and lower bounds of large deviation probabilities on the suprema of the d-dimensional Gaussian process.

Abstract:We prove two theorems concerning extreme values of general Gaussian fields. Our first theorem concerns with the concept of multiple peaks. A theorem of Chatterjee states that when a centered Gaussian field admits the so-called superconcentration property, it typically attains values near its maximum on multiple near-orthogonal sites, known as multiple peaks. We improve his theorem in two aspects: (i) the number of peaks attained by our bound is of the order $\exp(c / \sigma^2)$ (as opposed to Chatterjee's polynomial bound in $1/\sigma$), where $\sigma$ is the standard deviation of the supremum of the Gaussian field, which is assumed to have variance at most $1$ and (ii) our bound need not assume that the correlations are non-negative. We also prove a similar result based on the superconcentration of the free energy. As primary applications, we infer that for the S-K spin glass model on the $n$-hypercube and directed polymers on $\mathbb{Z}_n^2$, there are polynomially (in $n$) many near-orthogonal sites that achieve values near their respective maxima. Our second theorem gives an upper bound on moderate deviation for the supremum of a general Gaussian field. While the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality implies a sub-Gaussian concentration bound for the supremum, we show that the exponent in that bound can be improved under the assumption that the expectation of the supremum is of the same order as that of the independent case.

Abstract:We study level-set percolation for Gaussian free fields on metric graphs. In two dimensions, we give an upper bound on the chemical distance between the two boundaries of a macroscopic annulus. Our bound holds with high probability conditioned on connectivity and the bound is sharp up to a poly-logarithmic factor with an exponent of one-quarter. This substantially improves a previous result by Li and the first author. In three dimensions and higher, we provide rather sharp estimates of percolation probabilities in different regimes which altogether describe a sharp phase transition.

Abstract:These lecture notes offer a gentle introduction to the two-dimensional Discrete Gaussian Free Field with particular attention paid to the scaling limits of the level sets at heights proportional to the absolute maximum. The bulk of the text is based on recent joint papers with O. Louidor and with J. Ding and S. Goswami. Still, new proofs of the tightness and distributional convergence of the centered DGFF maximum are presented that by-pass the use of the modified Branching Random Walk. The text contains a wealth of instructive exercises and a list of open questions and conjectures for future research.

Uniqueness of unbounded component for level sets of smooth Gaussian fields

Abstract:For a large family of stationary continuous Gaussian fields $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, including the Bargmann-Fock and Cauchy fields, we prove that there exists at most one unbounded connected component in the level set $\{f=\ell\}$ (as well as in the excursion set $\{f\geq\ell\}$) almost surely for every level $\ell\in \mathbb{R}$, thus proving a conjecture proposed by Duminil-Copin, Rivera, Rodriguez & Vanneuville. As the fields considered are typically very rigid (e.g.~analytic almost surely), there is no sort of finite energy property available and the classical approaches to prove uniqueness become difficult to implement. We bypass this difficulty using a soft shift argument based on the Cameron-Martin theorem.

Abstract:We prove a multivariate central limit theorem for the numbers of critical points above a level with all possible indexes of a non-necessarily isotropic Gaussian random field. In particular, we discuss the non-degeneracy of the limit variance-covariance matrix. We extend, to the non-isotropic framework, known results by Estrade \& Le{ó}n and Nicolaescu for the Euler characteristic of an excursion set and for the total number of critical points of Gaussian random fields. Furthermore, we deduce the almost sure convergence of the normalized (by its mean) number of critical points above a level with any given index and, in particular, of the Euler characteristic of an excursion set. Though we use the classical tools of Hermite expansions and Fourth Moment Theorem, our proof of the non-degeneracy of the limit variance-covariance matrix is completely new since we need to consider all chaotic terms.

We provide a rough description of the geometry of the set of near maxima, estimates on the gap between the two largest maxima, and an estimate for the right tail up to a multiplicative constant on the law of the centered maximum.

Abstract:We consider upper level-sets of the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb Z^d$, for $d\geq 3$, above a given real-valued height parameter $h$. As $h$ varies, this defines a canonical percolation model with strong, algebraically decaying correlations. We prove that three natural critical parameters associated to this model, respectively describing a well-ordered subcritical phase, the emergence of an infinite cluster, and the onset of a local uniqueness regime in the supercritical phase, actually coincide. At the core of our proof lies a new interpolation scheme aimed at integrating out the long-range dependence of the Gaussian free field. Due to the strength of correlations, its successful implementation requires that we work in an effectively critical regime. Our analysis relies extensively on certain novel renormalization techniques that bring into play all relevant scales simultaneously. The approach in this article paves the way to a complete understanding of the off-critical phases for strongly correlated disordered systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the critical level-set of Gaussian free field (GFF) on the metric graph $\widetilde{\mathbb{Z}}^d,d>6$. We prove that the one-arm probability (i.e. the probability of the event that the origin is connected to the boundary of the box $B(N)$) is proportional to $N^{-2}$, where $B(N)$ is centered at the origin and has side length $2\lfloor N \rfloor$. Our proof is hugely inspired by Kozma and Nachmias [29] which proves the analogous result of the critical bond percolation for $d\geq 11$, and by Werner [51] which conjectures the similarity between the GFF level-set and the bond percolation in general and proves this connection for various geometric aspects.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotical behaviour of high exceedence probabilities for centered continuous -valued Gaussian random field with covariance matrix satisfying as . Such processes occur naturally as time transformations of homogenous random fields, and we present two asymptotic results of this nature as applications of our findings. The technical novelty of our proof consists in showing that the Slepian-Gordon inequality technique, essential in the univariate case, can also be successfully applied in the multivariate setup. This is noteworthy because this technique was previously believed to be inaccessible in this particular context.

Three central limit theorems for the unbounded excursion component of a Gaussian field

Abstract:For a smooth, stationary Gaussian field $f$ on Euclidean space with fast correlation decay, there is a critical level $\ell_c$ such that the excursion set $\{f\geq\ell\}$ contains a (unique) unbounded component if and only if $\ell<\ell_c$. We prove central limit theorems for the volume, surface area and Euler characteristic of this unbounded component restricted to a growing box. For planar fields, the results hold at all supercritical levels (i.e. all $\ell<\ell_c$). In higher dimensions the results hold at all sufficiently low levels (all $\ell<-\ell_c<\ell_c$) but could be extended to all supercritical levels by proving the decay of truncated connection probabilities. Our proof is based on the martingale central limit theorem.

Abstract:We consider the Discrete Gaussian Free Field (DGFF) in domains $D_N\subseteq\mathbb Z^2$ arising, via scaling by $N$, from nice domains $D\subseteq\mathbb R^2$. We study the statistics of the values order $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum. Encoded as a point process on $D\times\mathbb R$, the scaled spatial distribution of these near-extremal level sets in $D_N$ and the field values (in units of $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum) tends, as $N\to\infty$, in law to the product of the critical Liouville Quantum Gravity (cLQG) $Z^D$ and the Rayleigh law. The convergence holds jointly with the extremal process, for which $Z^D$ enters as the intensity measure of the limiting Poisson point process, and that of the DGFF itself; the cLQG defined by the limit field then coincides with $Z^D$. While the limit near-extremal process is measurable with respect to the limit continuum GFF, the limit extremal process is not. Our results explain why the various ways to "norm" the lattice cLQG measure lead to the same limit object, modulo overall normalization.

A covariance formula for the number of excursion set components of Gaussian fields and applications

Abstract:We derive a covariance formula for the number of excursion or level set components of a smooth stationary Gaussian field on $\mathbb{R}^d$ contained in compact domains. We also present two applications of this formula: (1) for fields whose correlations are integrable we prove that the variance of the component count in large domains is of volume order and give an expression for the leading constant, and (2) for fields with slower decay of correlation we give an upper bound on the variance which is of optimal order if correlations are regularly varying, and improves on best-known bounds if correlations are oscillating (e.g.\ monochromatic random waves).

The existence and continuity of the latter infinite series type Gaussian processes are proved via showing that under a global condition their partial sum processes converge uniformly over finite intervals with probability one.
Finite range decompositions of Gaussian fields with applications to level-set percolation

Abstract:In a recent work (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.10724" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.10724">arXiv:2206.10724</a>), Muirhead has studied level-set percolation of (discrete or continuous) Gaussian fields, and has shown sharpness of the associated phase transition under the assumption that the field has a certain multiscale white noise decomposition, a variant of a finite-range decomposition. We show that a large class of Gaussian fields have such a white noise decomposition with optimal decay parameter. Examples include the discrete Gaussian free field, the discrete membrane model, and the mollified continuous Gaussian free field. This answers various questions from Muirhead's paper. Our construction of the white-noise decomposition is a refinement of Bauerschmidt's construction of finite-range decomposition. In the continuous setting our construction is very similar to Bauerschmidt's, while in the discrete setting several new ideas are needed, including the use of a result by Pólya and Szegő on polynomials that take positive values on the positive real line.

Abstract:For the Bargmann--Fock field on $\mathbb R^d$ with $d\ge3$, we prove that the critical level $\ell_c(d)$ of the percolation model formed by the excursion sets $\{ f \ge \ell \}$ is strictly positive. This implies that for every $\ell$ sufficiently close to $0$ (in particular for the nodal hypersurfaces corresponding to the case $\ell=0$), $\{f=\ell\}$ contains an unbounded connected component that visits "most" of the ambient space. Our findings actually hold for a more general class of positively correlated smooth Gaussian fields with rapid decay of correlations. The results of this paper show that the behaviour of nodal hypersurfaces of these Gaussian fields in $\mathbb R^d$ for $d\ge3$ is very different from the behaviour of nodal lines of their two-dimensional analogues.
