Abstract:Microcavity structures are widely utilized as resonators in many optoelectronic devices to improve their optical performance. We present an analytic approach to study the angle-dependent properties in active microcavities with dielectric Bragg reflectors. Based on the hard mirror (HM) model and paraxial propagation approximation, the angle dependent resonance properties can be expressed analytically in virtue of the cavity parameters and incident angle. Making use of these expressions, we found both the position of the active layer and the configuration of dielectric Bragg mirrors contribute to the angular characteristics of resonance in the active microcavity. The varying trend of the standing wave effect, intracavity electrical field and the degradation of quantum efficiency due to different incident angle are discussed in detail. It's found that there exists an optimal cavity configuration where the enhanced intracavity resonance can keep high value within a broader incidence range. Then further performance optimization of the whole devices can be performed.

Abstract:A back metallic binary-rectangle grating is proposed to realize absorption enhancement through introducing plasmonic modes and cavity resonance modes. The grating contains a secondary grating whose height is optimized. Adding the structure can enhance absorption by a factor of 2.6 at λ = 915 nm and for the wavelengths in the range 550-790 nm, 875-900 nm the absorption is also enhanced.

Abstract:A cavity enhanced one-dimensional grating structure is proposed to improve the light absorption within the α-Si thin film solar cell. Typically, dielectric or metal structure including gratings is added for the light absorption enhancement. Not only does the structure form the guided modes, and increase the surface area/surface angle, but also the thin film itself forms a cavity allowing light trapping for better absorption. However, the structure is optimized in these two mechanisms separately. In this paper, finite element method (FEM) was used to optimize thicknesses of two cavities and then combine them into a one –dimensional grating structure. Comparing to the flat thin film solar cell, we have get absorption enhancement factors of 1.12 and 1.51 normalized for the AM 1.5 spectrum for 300 nm to 950 nm by the two proposed structures.
Microcavity Enhanced Optical Absorption in Subwavelength Slits.

Abstract:We introduce a compact submicron structure consisting of multiple optical microcavities at both the entrance and exit sides of a subwavelength plasmonic slit filled with an absorbing material. We show that such microcavity structures at the entrance side of the slit can greatly enhance the coupling of the incident light into the slit, by improving the impedance matching between the incident plane wave and the slit mode. In addition, the microcavity structures can also increase the reflectivities at both sides of the slit, and therefore the resonant field enhancement. Thus, such structures can greatly enhance the absorption cross section of the slit. An optimized submicron structure consisting of two microcavities at each of the entrance and exit sides of the slit leads to ~9.3 times absorption enhancement at the optical communication wavelength compared to an optimized slit without microcavities.

Abstract:Light blocking induced by top patterned nanostructures is a fundamental limit in solar cells absorption. Here we propose an interstitial lattice patterned organic solar cell which can improve the light blocking of traditional square lattice and achieve broadband absorption enhancement. Compared to square lattice design, the plasmonic mode couplings between individual metallic nanoparticles in the interstitial lattice are more versatile and much stronger. Moreover, plasmonic modes can couple to the guided modes, resulting in large enhancement factor at some wavelengths. The interstitial lattice concept will be a broad interest and great help for high-performance photovoltaics.

Abstract:A structure combined dual diffraction grating is investigated. Great enhancement at the discussed wavelength rang can be seen. The maximum enhancement rate can reach 25 at the wavelength of 950 nm and enhancement is broadband.

Abstract:A new type of light trapping structure utilizing ring-shaped metallic nanocavity arrays is proposed for the absorption enhancement in ultrathin solar cells with few photonic waveguide modes. Dozens of times of broadband absorption enhancement in the spectral range of 700 to 1100 nm is demonstrated in an ultrathin Si 3 N 4 /c-Si/Ag prototype solar cell by means of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation and this dramatic absorption enhancement can be attributed to the excitation of plasmonic cavity modes in these nanocavity arrays. The cavity modes optimally compensate for the lack of resonances in the longer wavelength range for ultrathin solar cells and eventually a maximum J sc enhancement factor of 2.15 is achieved under AM 1.5G solar illumination. This study opens a new perspective for light management in thin film solar cells and other optoelectronic devices.
Broadband Optical Concentration Technology Based on Grating Side-Coupling

Abstract:Though the technology of grating side-coupling is often applied in fields, such as coupling of light of single wavelength or narrow waveband, pump of fiber laser, integration of optical waveguide, its application for broadband coupling of visible spectrum is rarely studied. Sunlight can concentrate and output at the edge of waveguides by integrating sub-wavelength gratings with waveguides, making it a novel solar concentrator. In this paper, we simulated different grating structures with the finite-difference time-domain solution software (FDTD) to obtain the optimal structure design, since different grating structures feature different diffractive efficiencies. The result demonstrates that the structures mentioned above all feature good diffractive efficiencies in broadband wavelength, among which the blazing grating reaches the largest efficiency, namely 48.8%. This kind of sub-wavelength gratings feature integration of small size, which makes it promising in absorption of solar energy, such as lumination, photovoltaic cell, space melting, etc.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate the high optical absorption efficiency of a thin-film silicon solar cell. In thin-film solar cells, the efficiency is strongly dependent on light trapping by structures capable of exciting different resonance modes. Here, we consider a trapezoidal surface design that not only reduces reflection with a gradient index of refraction but also excites multiple cavity modes. The absorption can be enhanced further by combining a plasmonic structure, i.e., a silver grating. For comparison, we have separately simulated the silver grating structure, trapezoidal surface structure, and the combined structure. The combined structure retains all absorption effects shown by the individual components, achieving broadband absorption with a high efficiency. The investigations provide a unique design for high-performance solar cells of thin-film silicon.

Abstract:We reported in this work that light absorption can be significantly enhanced in an a-Si thin film solar cell with a nano binary metallic grating patterned on the bottom side. The enhancement is mainly due to combination of several kinds of optical modes. Cavity mode, at the transverse and longitudinal cavities and surface plasmon mode, propagating along the interface of silicon and silver are the main modes contributing to the enhancement. Some key parameters including grating period, width, height and active layer thickness are optimized. The integrated absorption rate of the optimized system reaches 76.55 % for the wavelength range from 300 to 950 nm under AM1.5G spectrum.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.

Abstract:In the subwavelength regime, several nanophotonic configurations have been proposed to overcome the conventional light trapping or light absorption enhancement limit in solar cells also known as the Yablonovitch limit. It has been recently suggested that establishing such limit should rely on computational inverse electromagnetic design instead of the traditional approach combining intuition and a priori known physical effect. In the present work, by applying an inverse full wave vector electromagnetic computational approach, a 1D nanostructured optical cavity with a new resonance configuration is designed that provides an ultrabroadband (approximate to 450 nm) light absorption enhancement when applied to a 107 nm thick active layer organic solar cell based on a low-bandgap (1.32 eV) nonfullerene acceptor. It is demonstrated computationally and experimentally that the absorption enhancement provided by such a cavity surpasses the conventional limit resulting from an ergodic optical geometry by a 7% average over a 450 nm band and by more than 20% in the NIR. In such a cavity configuration the solar cells exhibit a maximum power conversion efficiency above 14%, corresponding to the highest ever measured for devices based on the specific nonfullerene acceptor used.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the fact that solar energy has been widely used as a renewable and clean energy source for decades, when designing solar irradiation absorbers one is generally confronted with the dilemma of choosing between higher absorption but narrowband or broadband but lower absorption, which has greatly limited the development of the solar energy industry. In this work, a gradient cavity-thin-film metasurface (GCM) made up of alternating multiple layers of titanium (Ti) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) exhibits ultra-broadband strong absorption in 354–2980 nm. The operating bandwidth covers the dominating portion of the solar irradiation spectrum. The absorption spectrum can be manipulated by adjusting the structural parameters of the unit cell. It is worth noting that the spectrally weighted solar absorption efficiency reaches 98.28% under the AM 1.5G illumination. This impressive near-unity absorption could be attributed to multiple light–matter interactions including surface plasmon resonances, cavity resonance, and the intrinsic spectral responses of multi-layer refractory material. In addition, the absorption response is insensitive to the incident angle and polarization states. These high performances provide the GCM with great potential for practical applications in solar thermal energy harvesting and photothermal conversion, etc.

Abstract:A novel tunable frequency selective surface (FSS) with dual-degrees of freedom (DOF) is presented, and firstly applied to broadband absorber. Based on a simple prototype unit cell resonator, an approach for achieving multi-resonances is studied. A unit cell pattern with gradient edges is discussed, and variable resistor and variable capacitor are introduced to fully utilize its characteristic of multi-resonances. Bias line is designed to provide bias voltage respectively for two variable devices and provide two operational DOF for FSS. Simulation and measurement results both show that the tunable FSS absorber with dual-DOF has wideband absorption with the reflectivity below -10 dB in 1-5 GHz and with a total thickness of about 10 mm.

Abstract:Optical absorption improvement and cost reduction of thin-film solar cells have been long-time issues. These two aims are achieved simultaneously by combining metallic nanoribbons and dielectric gratings at the front side of ultrathin-film amorphous silicon solar cells. Surface-plasmon-polariton waves excited by the nanoribbons at the long wavelength co-operates with Uller-Zenneck waves and cavity resonances excited by the gratings at the short wavelength with little cross-effect, leading to a complementary absorption enhancement of 31% when compared to planar structure. In addition, this design exhibits wide-angle absorption as well as a high fabrication tolerance. Compared to the previous work combining different mechanisms, this design provides fewer fabrication steps and an easier approach. Moreover, the nanoribbons can be used as a transparent conducting electrode for a low-cost alternative to expensive indium tin oxide thin-film.

Abstract:Currently, the performances of thin film solar cells are limited by poor light absorption and carrier collection. In this research, large, broadband, and polarization-insensitive light absorption enhancement was realized via integrating with unique metallic nanogratings. Through simulation, three possible mechanisms were identified to be responsible for such an enormous enhancement. A test for totaling the absorption over the solar spectrum shows an up to similar to 30% broadband absorption enhancement when comparing to bare thin film cells.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in thin-film silicon solar cells with photonic crystals, where absorption enhancement is achieved by using large-area resonant effects in photonic crystals. First, a definitive guideline for enhancing light absorption in a wide wavelength range (600–1100 nm) is introduced, showing that the formation of multiple band edges utilizing higher-order modes confined in the thickness direction and the introduction of photonic superlattice structures enable significant absorption enhancement, exceeding that observed for conventional random scatterers. Subsequently, experimental evidence of this enhancement is demonstrated for a variety of thin-film Si solar cells: ∼500-nm-thick ultrathin microcrystalline silicon cells, few-μm-thick microcrystalline silicon cells, and ∼20-μm-thick thin single-crystalline silicon cells.
