Abstract:A series of new cationic Ir(III) complexes [Ir(C∧N)2(ppba)][PF6] P1–P5 as photosensitizers (PSs) has been rationally designed and synthesized. According to the study of photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water based on these five Ir(III) PSs, the highest yield of hydrogen generation has been achieved by P5, in which the strong electron-withdrawing substituent, 2,6-difluoropyridine, is adopted to cyclometalated ligands. Moreover, the hydrogen generation yield of P5 is ca.11 times than that of P3, revealing that the hydrogen generation activity of PSs can be effectively improved through the variation of cyclometalated ligands. Based on the discussion of light absorption, charge separation and electron transfer processes, P3 with the broadest absorption and the highest molar absorption coefficient in the visible region displays the best visible light absorption capacity among P1–P5 due to the attribute of electron-donating substituent (benzothiazole). As the introduction of 2,6-difluoropyridine substituent, P5 with the longest excited-state lifetime and the greatest potential difference between E(TEA+/TEA) and E(PS∗/PS−) among P1–P5 possesses the best charge separation and electron transfer capacities. These results illuminate that the introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents into cyclometalated ligands is beneficial for the improvement of hydrogen generation activity in this system. This article reveals that it is important to take into full consideration the relationship between structure and performance for the design of highly efficient PSs.

Abstract:A family of iridium(III) complexes with a general structure, [Ir((CN)-N-boolean AND)(2)((NN)-N-boolean AND)PF6 ((CN)-N-boolean AND is cyclometalating ligand and (NN)-N-boolean AND is bipyridyl ligand), was synthesized and explored as photosensitizers (PSs) for photocatalytic hydrogen generation using a three-component system containing an electron donor, triethylamine (TEA), a colloidal platinum catalyst and water. The introduction of a novel fluorinated (CN)-N-boolean AND ligand, 2-(2,4-difluoropheny1)-4-methylquinoline, leads to much faster electron transfer from TEA to the excited-state Ir-PSs, as confirmed from Stern-Volmer measurements. In combination with the employment of various (NN)-N-boolean AND ligands attached with surface-adsorbing groups including vinyl, formyl, cyano, and pyridyl, the photocatalytic hydrogen-generation duration is significantly extended. This might be related to the fast quenching of the reduced state (Ir-PS-) resulting from the enhanced interaction between the Ir-PSs and the Pt catalyst. In photocatalytic reactions at relatively low Ir-PS concentrations, turnover numbers of over 10,000 for hydrogen generation can be attained using the formyl Ir-PS. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis is a chemical process that aims to capture energy from sunlight to produce solar fuels. Light absorption by a robust and efficient photosensitizer is one of the key steps in solar energy conversion. However, common photosensitizers, including [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (RuP), remain far from the ideal. In this work, we exploited the performance of conjugated polymers (CPs) as photosensitizers in photodriven hydrogen evolution in aqueous solution (pH 6). Interestingly, CPs, such as poly(fluorene- co-phenylene) derivative (429 mmolH2·gCP-1·h-1), exhibit steady and high reactivity toward hydrogen evolution; this performance can rival that of a phosphonated RuP under the same conditions, indicating that CPs are promising metal-free photosensitizers for future applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:The photoreduction of water to hydrogen represents a promising method for generating sustainable clean fuel. The molecular processes of this photoreduction require an effective light absorber, such as the ruthenium polybipyridine complex, to collect and convert the solar energy into a usable chemical form. In the search for a highly active and stable photosensitizer (PS), iridium complexes are attractive because of their desirable photophysical characteristics. Herein, a series of homoleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium complexes, based on different 2-phenylpyridine ligands, were utilized as PSs in photocatalytic systems for hydrogen production with [Rh(dtb-bpy)(3)](PF6)(3) (dtb-bpy=4,4-di-tert-butyl-2,2-dipyridyl) serving as the water reduction catalyst (WRC) and triethanolamine (TEOA) as the electron donor. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. The excited state of neutral iridium complexes (PS*) could not be quenched by using TEOA as an electron donor, but they could be quenched by using [Rh(dtb-bpy)(3)](PF6)(3) as an electron acceptor, indicating that the PS* quenching pathway in catalytic reactions was most likely an oxidative quenching process. A set of long-lived and highly active systems for hydrogen evolution were obtained in Ir-III-Rh-III-TEOA systems. These systems maintained their activity for more than 72h with visible-light irradiation, and the total turnover number was up to 3040. Comparative studies indicated that the photocatalytic performance of these homoleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium compounds was superior to that of the cationic iridium complex [Ir(ppy)(2)(bpy)](PF6) (ppy=2-phenylpyridine, bpy=2,2-dipyridyl) (4), which was used as a reference. The significant increase in the photocatalytic efficiencies was in part attributed to the higher photostability of the neutral Ir-III complexes. This assumption was supported by their different coordination modes, photophysical, and electrochemical properties.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water is a facile and clean approach to convert rich solar energy into chemical fuel. Developing efficient and robust catalysts to accelerate water-splitting speed is key. Porphyrins exist widely in green plants and are a key photosensitizer to absorb and transfer light energy to other parts of the photosynthesis system of plants. They are considered an ideal model to construct artif cial photocatalysts for hot-carrier-mediated hydrogen production. This article discusses recent achievements in constructing porphyrin-based photocatalysts for hydrogen production, including porphyrin molecules, self-assembled porphyrins, metal-organic frameworks, conjugated porphyrin polymers, and hybrid nanomaterial-based photocatalysts. The design and synthesis principles, structure-property relationships, as well as urgent issues to be solved in the future for every type of photocatalyst are also discussed.
Rational Design of Bromine-Modified Ir(III) Photosensitizer for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:The facile design of highly efficient photosensitizers is fundamentally crucial for the construction of efficient photocatalytic H 2 -evolving systems. In this work, we employed substituted 2-(thiophen-2-yl) pyridine (C^N) and 2,2′-bipyridine (N^N) ligands to afford a series of iridium complexes. Interestingly, by introducing heavy halogen group -Br, the triplet state lifetime of affording photosensitizer was significantly enhanced to 4273 ns, which is 54 times to that of unmodified one (77 ns). While coupling with Ni-substituted polyoxometalate Ni 4 (SiW 9 ) 2 catalyst and triethanolamine electron donor, the bromine-modified photosensitizer can effectively drive hydrogen generation with a turnover number of ∼1400 under visible light irradiation. Spectroscopic studies reveal that the -Br modified iridium complex exhibits larger Stern−Volmer constants for both reductive and oxidative quenching processes. Mechanistic analyses demonstrate the advantages of long-lived excited states and good photostability of bromine modified photosensitizer, the efficient electron transfer process, and the well-matched energy levels between all three catalytic components for efficient hydrogen production.

Organic Supramolecular Materials for Photocatalytic Splitting of Water to Produce Hydrogen

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting to produce H 2 is ideal for converting solar energy into clean hydrogen energy, and the key to achieving solar H 2 production is to develop stable, efficient, and inexpensive photocatalysts. Recently, strategies based on self-assembly organic supramolecular using noncovalent interactions offer the possibility to mimic this functional correlation among molecules to optimize photocatalytic water splitting. As promising building blocks, perylene diimide (PDI) and porphyrins have demonstrated great potential in visible-light photocatalytic H 2 production, because of their electrical, optical, and catalytic properties. From this perspective, we have summarized the recent significant advances in the design and photocatalytic water splitting performance of PDI and porphyrin-based supramolecular materials. Rational strategies are described, such as molecular structure, crystal modification, and interfacial heterostructure. Finally, the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the future development of supramolecular photocatalysts in high-quality nanodevices are also proposed.
Hydrogen Photogeneration Promoted by Efficient Electron Transfer from Iridium Sensitizers to Colloidal MoS 2 Catalysts

Abstract:We report the utilization of colloidal MoS 2 nanoparticles (NPs) for multicomponent photocatalytic water reduction systems in cooperation with a series of cyclometalated Ir(III) sensitizers. The effects of the particle size and particle dispersion of MoS 2 NPs catalyst, reaction solvent and the concentration of the components on hydrogen evolution efficiency were investigated. The MoS 2 NPs exhibited higher catalytic performance than did other commonly used water reduction catalysts under identical experiment conditions. The introduction of the carboxylate anchoring groups in the iridium complexes allows the species to be favorably chem-adsorbed onto the MoS 2 NPs surface to increase the electron transfer, resulting in enhancement of hydrogen evolution relative to the non-attached systems. The highest apparent quantum yield, which was as high as 12.4%, for hydrogen evolution, was obtained (λ = 400 nm).

Abstract:The cationic complex [Pt(tolylterpyridine)(phenylacetylide)]+ has been used as a photosensitizer for the reduction of aqueous protons in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor to make H2. In this system, triethanolamine (TEOA) acts as the sacrificial reducing agent, methyl viologen (MV2+) serves as an electron transfer agent, and colloidal Pt stabilized by polyacrylate functions as the catalyst for H2 generation. The Pt(II) chromophore undergoes both oxidative and reductive quenching, but H2 is only seen when both TEOA and MV2+ are present. Irradiation of the reaction solution for 10 h with lambda > 410 nm leads to 85 turnovers and an overall yield of 34% based on TEOA. While H2 evolution is maximized for the system at pH 7, it is also seen at pH 5 and 9, in contrast with earlier reports using Ru(bpy)32+ as the photosensitizer. This is the first time that a Pt diimine or terpyridyl complex has been used as the photosensitizer for H2 generation from aqueous protons.
Development of 9,9-Disubstituted Fluorene-based Di-anchoring Photosensitizers for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:New mono- and di-anchoring organic photosensitizers (PSs) with phenyl or triphenylamine (TPA) 9,9-substituted fluorene spacer and cyanoacrylic acid acceptor(s) were synthesized and evaluated for photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied, focusing on their correlation with photocatalytic performance. Di-anchoring PSs showed double the photocatalytic efficiency due to their lower LUMO level and two acceptor groups, facilitating efficient electron extraction, reducing aggregation on TiO 2 , enhancing light-harvesting abilities, and improving charge transfer. The PSs with substituted TPA adopted highly bulky molecular structures. The introduction of TPA groups specifically led to the suppression of charge transport resistance and enhancement of interfacial electron transfer. The TPA-substituted di-anchoring PS TPAF2 -based photocatalytic system produced 1380 μmol of hydrogen over 47 h under blue light, with a turnover number (TON) of 22660, a turnover frequency (TOF i ) of 1067 h −1 , an initial hydrogen production activity (activity i ) of 666850 and an apparent quantum yield (AQY i %) of 11.418. The bulky TPA moieties rendered the PSs significantly photostable, as affirmed by their high hydrogen production efficiency over 257 h of prolonged irradiation, generating 58.9 mL of hydrogen. This work presents a strategy for constructing efficient PSs for photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water.

Abstract:To explore structure–activity relationships with respect to light-harvesting behavior, a family of neutral iridium complexes [Ir(ppy)2(LR)] 1–4 (where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, and N̂N = 2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine and its functionalized derivatives) were designed and synthesized. The structural modifications in metal complexes are accomplished through the attributions of electron-donating CH3 in 2, OCH3 in 3, and electron-withdrawing CF3 in 4. The structural analysis displays that the pyridylpyrrole acts as one-negative charged bidentated ligand to chelate the iridium center. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of these complexes were systematically studied. The neutral 1–4 as well as the ionic structurally analogous [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)](PF6) (5) were utilized as PSs in photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water with [Co(bpy)3](PF6)2 as catalyst and triethanolamine (TEOA) as electron sacrificial agent in the presence of salt LiCl. Complex 1 maintains activity for more than 144 h under irradiation, and the total turnover number is up to 1768. Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an important industrial chemical and also a possible energy carrier. Photocatalytic synthesis of H 2 O 2 is an attractive alternative to the anthraquinone process, but current catalyst systems suffer from many problems including: a limited sunlight wavelength response, the need for sacrificial reagents and insufficient activity. Here we report self-assembled tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin supramolecular photocatalysts that produce H 2 O 2 from only H 2 O and O 2 and with a quantum efficiency of 14.9% at 420 nm and 1.1% at 940 nm. The catalyst achieves a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 1.2% at 328 K when irradiated and heated with simulated sunlight. Our results suggest that photogenerated electrons and holes contribute to H 2 O 2 production by reacting on different active sites including pyrrole N–H ring and carboxyl groups. In particular, we propose a hole-induced H 2 O 2 production process, which involves the photoconversion of -COOH to -CO 3 H groups on the catalyst, followed by thermal decomposition.
Pathways towards Boosting Solar‐Driven Hydrogen Evolution of Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Photocatalytic H2 evolution under solar illumination has been considered to be a promising technology for green energy resources. Developing highly efficient photocatalysts for photocatalytic water splitting is long-term desired but still challenging. Conjugated polymers (CPs) have attracted ongoing attention and have been considered to be promising alternatives for solar-driven H2 production due to the excellent merits of the large π-conjugated system, versatile structures, tunable photoelectric properties, and well-defined chemical composites. The excellent merits have offered numerous methods for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) of initial CP-based photocatalysts, whose apparent quantum yield is dramatically increased from <1 to >20% in recent five years. According to the photocatalytic mechanism, this review herein systematically summarizes three major strategies for boosting photocatalytic H2 production of CPs: 1) enhancing visible light absorption, 2) suppressing recombination of electron-hole pairs, and 3) boosting surface catalytic reaction, mainly involving eleven methods, that is, copolymerization, modifying cross-linker, constructing a donor-acceptor structure, functionalization, fabricating organic heterojunction, loading cocatalyst, and surface modification. Finally, the perspectives towards the future development of PHE are proposed.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors provide significant potentials for the construction of photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for solar hydrogen production because of their highly tunable properties. Herein, on carbon fiber paper (CFP) surface, pyridyl (Py), and 4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium (Py2+) groups were introduced into polythiophene (pTH) semiconductor by electrochemical copolymerization, respectively. After assembly with the Co(dmgBF2)2 type catalyst (CoB, dmgBF2 = difluoroboryldimethylglyoximate), the CoB@Py2+-pTH/CFP photocathode displayed nearly twice the photocurrent enhancement (550 μA cm-2 at 0.15 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) comparing to that generated by the CoB@Py-pTH/CFP photocathode (290 μA cm-2 at 0.15 V vs RHE) for light-driven H2 generation under AM 1.5 solar illumination. Investigation of the mechanism revealed that the introduction of the positively charged pyridinium groups could improve the intrinsic Co(dmgBF2)2 catalyst activity for the H2 generation reaction. Meanwhile, the positively charged pyridinium groups serve as p-type dopants to increase the semiconductor bulk charge transfer rate and act as electron transfer mediators to promote the interfacial charge transfer kinetics between the catalyst and the pTH-based organic semiconductor.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution via solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is considered an important strategy for facilitating clean global energy and overcoming the severe environmental challenges facing our society. As a result, many photocatalysts have been developed over the past several years. In this review, we outline the most recent advances in hydrogen evolution photocatalysts over the past 2 years. In particular, we introduce hydrogen production methods, main and cocatalysts for hydrogen evolution through water splitting, the underlying photocatalytic mechanisms, and current challenges and future potential advances for this exciting field.
Enhancing Photosynthesis Efficiency of Hydrogen Peroxide by Modulating Side Chains to Facilitate Water Oxidation at Low-Energy Barrier Sites

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a crucial oxidant in advanced oxidation processes. In situ, photosynthesis of it in natural water holds the promise of practical application for water remediation. However, current photosynthesis of H2O2 systems primarily relies on oxygen reduction, leading to limited performance in natural water with low dissolved oxygen or anaerobic conditions found in polluted water. Herein, a novel photocatalyst based on conjugated polymers with alternating electron donor-acceptor structures and electron-withdrawing side chains on electron donors is introduced. Specifically, carbazole functions as the electron donor, triazine serves as the electron acceptor, and cyano acts as the electron-withdrawing side chain. Notably, the photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable solar-to-chemical conversion of 0.64%, the highest reported in natural water. Furthermore, even in anaerobic conditions, it achieves an impressive H2O2 photosynthetic efficiency of 1365 µmol g-1 h-1, surpassing all the reported photosynthetic systems of H2O2. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the effective relocation of the water oxidation active site from a high-energy carbazole to a low-energy acetylene site mediated by the side chains, resulting in enhanced O2 or H2O2 generation from water. This breakthrough offers a new avenue for efficient water remediation using advanced oxidation technologies in oxygen-limited environments, holding significant implications for environmental restoration.
