Abstract:We report on the vector nature of rectangular pulse operating in dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) region in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Apart from the typical signatures of DSR, the rectangular pulse trapping of two polarization components centered at different wavelengths was observed and they propagated as a group-velocity locked vector soliton. Moreover, the polarization resolved soliton spectra show different spectral distributions. The observed results will enhance the understanding of fundamental physics of DSR phenomenon. Abstract:Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) was previously studied in separated mode-locked fiber lasers within different dispersion regimes including anomalous, near-zero and normal dispersion. Here we propose a method to study DSR in a single mode-locked laser in these different dispersion regimes. This is achieved by virtue of a waveshaper which can control the laser dispersion readily using software, avoiding the usual tedious cutback method. We find that dispersion has negligible effect on DSR since the pulse duration keeps constant while dispersion is varied. Moreover, we examine the dynamics of DSR on the parameters of the SA including modulation depth and saturation power, and find that the pulse duration can be changed in a large range when the saturation power is decreased. Our numerical simulations could be important to guide relative experimental studies.

Abstract:The experiment reports a kind of L-band dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) nanosecond Er-doped fiber laser. The passive mode-locked L-band DSR pulse is achieved in a figure-eight structure by using the nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror (NALM). The repetition rate of pulse is 468 kHz. At the maximum pump power of 398 mW, the output power is 25 mW with a pulse energy of 45 nJ. By adjustment of polarization state in cavity, the output pulse can be switched among 4 different DSR states with central wavelength of 1572, 1585, 1590 and 1605 nm discretely, presenting different peak power and pulse width. We can determine that the adjustment of polarization state changes the loss spectra of cavity and the 4 DSR states operate in different balance points. The tunable DSR pulse duration is from 120 to 150 ns by increasing the central wavelength.

Abstract:We report numerical and experimental studies of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) in a fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. The DSR pulse presents temporally a flat-top profile and a clamped peak power. Its spectrum has a rectangle profile with characteristic steep edges. It shows a unique behavior as pulse energy increases: The rectangle part of the spectrum is unchanged while the newly emerging spectrum sits on the center part and forms a peak. Experimental observations match well with the numerical results. Moreover, compression of the DSR pulses is both numerically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. An experimentally obtained DSR pulse of 63 ps duration is compressed down to 760 fs, with low-intensity pedestals using a grating pair. Before being compressed to its narrowest width, the pulse firstly evolves into a cat-ear profile, and the corresponding autocorrelation trace shows a crown shape, which distinguishes itself from properties of other solitons formed in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Dissipative pure-quartic soliton (DPQS) that arises from the balance of positive fourth-order dispersion (FOD), nonlinearity, gain and loss has been proposed to generate high-energy pulse. Herein, we numerically investigate the generation of dissipative pure-quartic soliton resonance (DPQSR) in an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser with all positive FOD. Our findings indicate that the formation of DPQSR depends on the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) effect of real saturable absorber. Then, the impacts of pump power, RSA coefficient and positive FOD in generating DPQSR pulse are investigated. With the increase of pulse energy, the asymmetrical temporal profile of DPQS transforms into a rectangular one. This work can be utilized to comprehend the dissipative pure-quartic soliton resonance as well as the development of an all positive FOD Er-doped fiber laser. In addition, it lays the way for the development of highly stable, high-energy pulsed lasers.

Abstract:The dynamics of dissipative solitons (DSs) are explored in a high repetition rate normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser for the first time. Despite of the high fundamental repetition rate of 129 MHz and thus the low pulse energy, a DS train with a dechirped pulse width of 418 fs, period-doubling of single and dual DSs, as well as 258 MHz 2nd-order harmonic mode-locking of DSs can be observed in the fiber laser with increasing pump power and appropriate settings. A transmitted semiconductor saturable absorber and a wavelength division multiplexer/isolator/tap hybrid module are employed to simplify the laser configuration, thus not only increasing the repetition rate, but also enhancing the stability and robustness of the fiber laser due to the commercial availability of all the components.

Abstract:We numerically investigated the splitting and motions of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by a non-linear optical loop mirror. At certain values of the system parameters, the initial single Gaussian pulse can evolve into an unstable DSR pulse with several dark solitons inside. After collisions of dark solitons, a big intensity dip occurs at the center of the DSR pulse, leading to the splitting of the DSR pulse. After splitting, the peak-to-peak separation between two DSR pulses increases at first and finally reaches a fixed value of 193 ps, indicating a steady-state multipulse operation The relative motions of separated DSR pulse originate from the phase shift.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Increasing the pump power of the fiber laser, we show that temporally a stable, uniform DSR pulse train could be transformed into a period-doubling state, exhibiting two sets of pulse parameters between the adjacent cavity roundtrip. It is found that DSR pulses in the period-doubling state could maintain the typical feature of DSR pulse: fixed pulse peak power and linear variation in pulse width with respect to the pump power change. The mechanism for achieving period-doubling of DSR pulses is discussed.

Abstract:We report on the generation of dual-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in a passively mode-locked figure-eight fiber laser operating in the net-normal dispersion regime. DSs with central wavelengths of 1572 and 1587 nm can be achieved simultaneously or respectively. The dual-wavelength DSs, traveling at different round-trip time, exhibit double-rectangular spectral profile. The intensities of two mode-locked spectra decrease or increase simultaneously after passing through a polarization beam splitter, indicating that the dual-wavelength DSs almost share the same polarization state. Experimental results demonstrated that dual-wavelength mode locking strongly depends on birefringence-induced filtering effect.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a direct generation of high-energy dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) and rectangular noise-like pulse (NLP) in a figure-9 thulium-holmium-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The pulse duration and average output power of the DSR can be tuned from 33.5 ns to 144.6 ns, and from 100.25 mW to 677.5 mW, respectively. The maximum of pulse energy is 713.2 nJ without wave breaking at pump power of 6.7 W, which is the highest energy of DSR in the region of 2 mu m, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:Emission of an all-fiber, Dissipative Soliton Resonance (DSR) mode-locked, Double-Clad (DC), Erbium-Ytterbium (Er:Yb) laser configuration is investigated under several different values of large anomalous dispersion. The laser was mode-locked by means of Nonlinear Amplifying Loop Mirror (NALM) in a Figure-8 (F8) resonator configuration. The boundaries of anomalous dispersion in which the laser operated in purely DSR regime was experimentally verified by changing the length of passive SMF28 fiber spliced into the NALM. The influence of 6 different values of dispersion (-1.061 ps2 to -10.7 ps2) on the pulse properties is presented and discussed.

Abstract:Dissipative soliton (DS) is demonstrated in a large anomalous dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser. A chirped fiber Bragg grating is implemented into a figure-of-9 cavity to provide a large anomalous dispersion. A self-starting and stable DS operation is achieved with 3.5 nJ pulse energy and 12.9 ps pulse duration under a 26.4 MHz repetition rate. Numerical simulations reveal that the DSs presented here experience strong temporal, spectral, and chirp breathing in the cavity. Thanks to the characteristic chirp breathing, the output DS pulses can maintain a narrow spectral bandwidth of 0.17 nm. We believe that the laser design presented here has a lot of potential and could be an outstanding ultrafast seed laser solution for industrial applications including micromachining and hard-brittle material processing.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated the harmonic mode-locking (HML) dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses in an erbium-doped fiber laser with large normal dispersion utilizing an optical integrated module (OIM) mode locked by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. With fixed intra-cavity parameters, various HML operations in the DSR regimes are available through adjusting the polarization controller (PC). Triggered by extra filtering loss due to broadened spectra under the stronger pump power or variations of polarization states, the multi-pulsing operation in the cavity assisted by pulse self-organizing enables the fundamental mode-locking (FML) DSR pulses to transform into HML conditions, where the newly formed HML DSR pulses are evolving in the same characteristics as the FML DSR pulses during each harmonic order. Under specific polarization states, the harmonic order is able to increase sequentially as the pump power ramps up with spectral redshift. Further tuning the PCs at a strong pump power will enable other harmonic states, of which the order could be up to 17th.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:The generation of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in an all-normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser based on a real saturable absorber is amazing in both experiment and theory. However, it's rarely to realize DSR in an all-normal Er-doped fiber laser in experiments to our knowledge. In this work, we analyze the principle of DSR generated in an all-normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser based on a real saturable absorber, and prove that the key reason is the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) effect of the real saturable absorber (SA). Then, we investigate the impacts of pump power, filter, and RSA coefficient in generating DSR pulse. In addition, when the saturable power of SA is above 25 W and the modulation depth of SA above 50%, a novel soliton explosion phenomenon based on RSA in DSR region is obtained for the first time to our knowledge. The work can be used for understanding the dissipative soliton resonance as well as the evolution in an all-normal dispersion Er-doped fiber laser. Furthermore, it also paves a way to realize high stable and high energy pulsed lasers in telecommunication region.

Abstract:Multi-pulsing dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) domain has been studied numerically and observed experimentally in a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) based Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser. Numerical simulation over a large number of roundtrips shows evolution of a multi-pulse Gaussian input field into multiple DSR pulses with equal flat-top amplitude and intra-pulse temporal separation. The dependence of stable multi-pulsing on the pump power has also been studied. The laser cavity delivered nano-second duration DSR pulses at 2.33-MHz repetition rate having a 3-dB spectral line width of 0.24 nm with rectangular shaped temporal profile. The pulse width could be tuned from 1.2 to 3.6 ns with the pump power. Pulse duration can be also varied by proper adjustment of the polarization controllers (PCs). At a certain high pump power, with precise adjustment of the PCs, one DSR pulse splits into multiple numbers of smaller duration pulses having equal amplitude, shape, width, and intra-pulse separation. There is no change in the nature of the spectrum under single and multi-pulse operation. The number of pulses can be varied with pump power and proper adjustment of the PCs. The pulses were observed to be stable for a constant period of 1 h in the absence of external perturbation. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first observation of multi-pulsing DSR in NALM-based mode-locked ANDi fiber laser.

Abstract:We report on the generation of multi-wavelength dissipative soliton (DS) in an all normal dispersion fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). We show that depending on the strength of the cavity birefringence, stable single-, dual- and triple-wavelength DSs can be formed in the laser. The multi-wavelength soliton operation of the laser was experimentally investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the multi-wavelength DSs are discussed.
