Abstract:Two years ago, during the first symposium of the Else Kroner-Fresenius Foundation, the conceptual view of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) was in the process of changing. It was long assumed that HSCs equivalently give rise to all lymphoid and myeloid cells. However, many key papers have come out in recent years supporting a new concept: different subtypes of HSCs exist and exhibit different capacities to give rise to these different types of cells in the hematopoietic system, i.e. so-called myeloid-biased and lymphoid-competent HSCs. During the 3rd Else Kroner-Fresenius Symposium on Stem Cell Aging, there were many talks on HSC aging and how it may relate to stem cell fate and the development of malignancies. In this chapter, we summarize the topics related to HSC aging and leukemia that were intensively discussed during the meeting. copyright (V) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel
