Abstract:Efficient broadband coupling of light between a dielectric waveguide and a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. A plasmonic linear taper is used as a coupler which connects the two types of waveguides. Broadband coupling is realized by such a compact plasmonic taper with a length of only 0.4 microm, which achieves a coupling efficiency of 70% (1.5 dB) at the 1.55 microm telecommunication wavelength.

Abstract:A novel triplexer chip based on an asymmetric Y branch waveguide and a multimode interference is presented in this paper. Using the novel triplexer chip, a 1310nm channel is multiplexed and 1490nm and 1550nm channels are demultiplexed for FTTH using. The asymmetric Y branch waveguide is used to separate the 1310nm channel from the 1490nm and 1550nm channels. Then the multimode interference is used to demultiplex the 1490nm from 1550nm channel. The simulated spectra show the bandwidths of three response wavelengths are 100nm, 20nm and 10nm, respectively, which can meet the demand of ITU.984 completely. The isolation for 1310nm is more than 48dB, and the isolation between 1490nm and 1550nm is more than 37dB.

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.

Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband, and low-loss-mode-evolution-based 2 x 23 dB coupler on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The waveguide widths and separations of the coupler were tapered in an optimal manner using the shortcuts to the adiabaticity method. The coupler, with a similar to 70 mu m total length and 200 nm feature size, exhibited <0.3 dB measured excess loss over a broadband wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm. Balanced and unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers fabricated for validation showed extinction ratios larger than 27 and 23 dB, respectively, over a 100 nm bandwidth. Abstract:A high efficiency grating coupler between single-mode fiber and silicon-on-insulator waveguide is designed by a formula method. Over 78.5% coupling efficiency (>−1.05 dB) with 3 dB bandwidth about 50 nm for one grating coupler is obtained experimentally and this result is the highest one as far as we know. This grating coupler is CMOS compatible which needs only one etch-step and is designed for a standard SOI chip without any Bragg reflector or bottom reflector.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:Widely tunable semiconductor lasers based on a novel half-wave coupler are presented. They have been implemented in the form of half-wave coupled V-cavity and ring-FP cavities. By using the novel half-wave coupler, single-mode lasing with high side-mode-suppression-ratio is achieved. Single-electrode controlled wide-band wavelength tuning with Vernier effect is demonstrated. The full-band tuning of 50 channels with 100GHz spacing is realized by further employing temperature induced gain spectrum shift. The laser is packaged into a small-form-factor 9-pin box TOSA, and the electronic driver has been developed for the wavelength tuning and direct modulation. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, easy wavelength control and direct modulation allow the tunable lasers to be used in low-cost access and datacenter networks, as well as in portable devices for spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:A unidirectional dual-wavelength-band grating coupler with one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inverse optimization method is used for the design and the grating coupler fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator chip can achieve efficient fiber-chip coupling simultaneously in the O-band and the L-band. The peak coupling efficiencies in the two bands are measured to be 19.7% and 19.5% with 3-dB bandwidths of 27 and 38-nm, respectively.

Abstract:The interlayer coupler is one of the critical building blocks for optical interconnect based on multilayer photonic integration to realize light coupling between stacked optical waveguides. However, commonly used coupling strategies, such as evanescent field coupling, usually require a close distance, which could cause undesired interlayer crosstalk. This work presents a novel interlayer slope waveguide coupler based on a multilayer chalcogenide glass photonic platform, enabling light to be directly guided from one layer to another with a large interlayer gap (1 µm), a small footprint (6 × 1 × 0.8 µm3), low propagation loss (0.2 dB at 1520 nm), low device processing temperature, and a high bandwidth, similar to that in a straight waveguide. The proposed interlayer slope waveguide coupler could further promote the development of advanced multilayer integration in 3D optical communications systems.

Abstract:The chip-fiber grating coupler is a fundamental building block in integrated photonics, providing convenient on-wafer testing and packaging. Couplers based on a silicon nitride (SiNx) material platform can achieve wider bandwidths than silicon-based couplers, but suffer from lower efficiency due to the relative low material refractive index. The efficiency of the SiNx grating coupler can be improved by using high-reflectivity silicon grating reflectors underneath. However, such a silicon grating reflector requires several fabrication steps, including lithography, etching, high precision alignment (HPA), and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). In this Letter, we demonstrate an easy-to-fabricate SiNx-on-SOI transverse-electric mode grating coupler requiring only one patterning step (grating alone), and without the need for HPA and CMP. A coupling coefficient of -2.5 dB and 1-dB-bandwidth of 65 nm has been experimentally measured.

Abstract:Two asymmetric directional couplers, including the dielectric-hybrid plasmonic coupler and the dielectric-metal insulator-metal plasmonic coupler, are investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency and can be integrated into the silicon based platform. The applications of these hybrid couplers include the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and efficient excitation of plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes. Besides, a symmetric directional coupler based on silver nanowires is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a widely tunable coupled-cavity semiconductor laser based on a novel half-wave bow-tie coupler. The laser comprises two resonate cavities connected through the bow-tie coupler consisting of two back-to-back corner reflectors connected with a short waveguide, which produces a half-wave cross-coupling phase with an optimum coupling coefficient for achieving high mode selectivity. No complex grating or multiple epitaxial growth is needed. By tuning a single electrode at a fixed temperature, 29.6 nm wavelength tuning covering 38 channels with 100 GHz frequency spacing is achieved experimentally, with a side-mode suppression ratio of over 35 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate hybrid amorphous silicon uniform grating couplers for efficient coupling between the standard single-mode fiber and sub-micron lithium niobate waveguides. The grating couplers exhibit coupling efficiency of -3.06 dB and 1-dB bandwidth of 55 nm. The amorphous silicon grating couplers can also provide a universal building block applicable to other photonic platforms such as silicon nitride waveguides, whose moderate refractive index values prevent high efficiency grating couplers to be fabricated in the native waveguide. Abstract:The single mode hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide is presented at the wavelength of 1.55 mu m. We show that this waveguiding structure, consisting of a low-index SiO2-stripe sandwiched between a high-index Si-nanowire and a silver film, achieves both long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity. Components such as 90 degrees-circular and S-shaped bends, based on the proposed waveguide with an intensity confinement area of 50x200 nm(2), can obtain a total transmission efficiency exceeding 85% for various bend radii. Finally, we demonstrate that the efficient directional couplers can be developed using two coupled waveguides. In particular, we determine the typical coupling lengths and maximum transfer power for different structural parameters of the coupler. Abstract:Edge coupler is a key component of silicon-based optoelectronic chips, which dramatically reduces the coupling loss between fibers and transmission waveguides. Here, we propose an ultralow-loss three-step silicon edge coupler based on a 130 nm CMOS process. By replacing the silicon substrate with a material with a lower refractive index than silicon oxide, the silicon leakage loss and polarization-dependent loss can be significantly improved. This structure avoids the existence of a cantilever, which enhances the mechanical strength of the edge coupler. Coupling with standard single-mode fiber, the simulation results demonstrate that the TE/TM mode has an ultralow loss of 0.63/1.08 dB at 1310 nm and 0.57/1.34 dB at 1550 nm, and the 0.5 dB bandwidth covering the entire communication band is about 400 nm. In the entire communication band, the polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.8 dB. Furthermore, we propose a taper shape design method based on mode analysis, which can be adapted for any taper to improve its compactness. Compared with the parabolic shape, the coupling loss of the edge coupler with a length of 460 μm for the TE mode is improved by 0.3 dB on average, this edge coupler provides a feasible solution for fiber-to-chip coupling and is perfectly suitable for wavelength division multiplexing applications in optical communications.

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate is a promising material platform for integrated nonlinear photonics, due to its high refractive index contrast with the excellent optical properties. However, the high refractive index contrast and correspondingly small mode field diameter limit the attainable coupling between the waveguide and fiber. In second harmonic generation processes, lack of efficient fiber-chip coupling schemes covering both the fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths has greatly limited the overall efficiency. We design and fabricate an ultra-broadband tri-layer edge coupler with a high coupling efficiency. The coupler allows efficient coupling of 1 dB / facet at 1550 nm and 3 dB / facet at 775 nm. This enables us to achieve an ultrahigh overall second harmonic generation normalized efficiency (fiber-to-fiber) of 1027 % W − 1 cm − 2 (on-chip second harmonic efficiency ∼3256 % W − 1 cm − 2) in a 5-mm-long periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide, which is two to three orders of magnitude higher than that in state-of-the-art devices.
