Abstract:We present optical observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) in the standard BVRI bands with the 80 cm Tsinghua Centre for Astrophysics-National Astronomical Observatories of China telescope. In 2004, BL Lac was monitored for 25 nights, between September and November, to study its long-term optical variability behaviour. The source initially faded by delta R similar to 1 mag in similar to 30 d and then brightened by delta R similar to 0.8 mag in similar to 20 d. It was further monitored for six consecutive nights on 2005 September 3-8, focusing on its intranight variability characteristics. The source continuously brightened by delta R similar to 0.7 mag during the six nights, with some visible fluctuations superimposed on to the brightness-increasing trend. The amplitudes of intranight variations tend to increase from I to B wavelengths. BL Lac exhibited strong bluer-when-brighter behaviour for the internight variations, which is less pronounced for some of the intranight variations. The intranight variations between different bands are correlated without measurable time lags in most time, but the flare on 2005 September 6 showed that the R-band variations lagged the B band ones by 1052(-759)(+859)s. Our results indicate that the optical variability properties of BL Lac (the prototype of low-energy-peaked BL Lac objects, LBLs) remarkably resemble the X-ray variability properties of high-energy-peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs). The similarities imply common origin of the variations, plausibly the most energetic tails of the synchrotron emission produced by the relativistic electrons in the jets, for both the optical emission of LBLs and the X-ray emission of HBLs.

Abstract:We monitored BL Lacertae frequently during 2014 - 2016 when it was generally in a high state. We searched for intra-day variability for 43 nights using quasi-simultaneous measurements in the B, V, R, and I bands (totaling 143 light curves); the typical sampling interval was about eight minutes. On hour-like timescales, BL Lac exhibited significant variations during 13 nights in various optical bands. Significant spectral variations are seen during most of these nights such that the optical spectrum becomes bluer when brighter. The amplitude of variability is usually greater for longer observations but is lower when BL Lac is brighter. No evidence for periodicities or characteristic variability time-scales in the light curves was found. The color variations are mildly chromatic on long timescales.

Abstract:Abstract We observed BL Lac in the B , V , R , and I bands with an 85 cm telescope on nine nights from 2019 September 18 to 2019 December 6. More than 2300 data points were collected. All intraday light curves were examined for variations by using the most reliable power-enhanced F -test and the ANOVA test, and intraday variability was found on five nights. Thanks to our high precision and high temporal resolution data, two key discoveries were made in the following analyses. (1) In addition to the strong bluer-when-brighter behavior on most nights, we observed a color reversal that is rarely found in BL Lac objects. This indicates that there are two different energy distributions of injected electrons on this night. (2) The object traced clockwise loops on the color–magnitude diagrams on one night. These are the first intraday spectral hysteresis loops reported in the optical bands in this object, suggesting interband time lags. We estimated the interband lags by using the ZDCF, ICCF, and JAVELIN , and found the variations in the V and R band lagged that in the B band by about 16 and 18 minutes, respectively. Such optical time lags are expected if the acceleration timescale is much shorter than the cooling timescale.

Abstract:The intraday optical variability of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 is studied using historical light curves. The well-sampled intranight data set is selected. In total, 19 333 data points have been collected over 208 nights. The source exhibits strong variability in the optical band. At a confidence level of 99.9 per cent, for 162 of the 208 nights the source shows intranight variability. The source varies with an increasing rate of 0.043 mag h-1 and a decreasing rate of 0.036 mag h-1 during the observations, with no evident difference between rising and falling parts. The fast variability is found on JD 245 1909, with a decreasing rate of 0.015 mag min-1 over 6 min. The temporal characteristic is studied by using the structure function method. The result shows that the source varies with an 11.5-min time-scale. For this source, the emission size is estimated to be 1.39 x 1014 cm, the mass of the central black hole is estimated to be 107.87 M? and the magnetic field strength is estimated to be 10.6 G.

Abstract:We perform quasi-simultaneous optical multi-band monitoring of BL Lac object S5 0716+714 on seven nights from 2013 to 2016. Intra-day variability (IDV) is found on all seven nights. The source was faintest on JD 2456322 with 14.15 mags and brightest on JD 2457437 with 12.51 mags in the $R$ band. The maximum intra-day variation we observed is 0.15 mags in the $B$ band on JD 2456322. Both bluer-when-brighter and achromatic spectral behaviours were observed on the intra-day timescale. On the longer-term scale, the object exhibited a mild bluer-when-brighter behaviour between the $B$ and $R$ bands. We estimate the inter-band lags using two independent methods. The variation in the $B$ band was observed to lag that in the $I$ band by about 15 minutes on JD 2457315. We compare this lag with one reported previously and discussed the origin of these lags.

Abstract:We present an extensive recent multi-band optical photometric observations of the blazar S5 0716+714 carried out over 53 nights with two telescopes in India, two in Bulgaria, one in Serbia, and one in Egypt during 2019 November -- 2022 December. We collected 1401, 689, 14726, and 165 photometric image frames in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. We montiored the blazar quasi-simultaneously during 3 nights in B, V, R, and I bands; 4 nights in B, V, and R; 2 nights in V, R, and I; 5 nights in B and R; and 2 nights in V and R bands. We also took 37 nights of data only in R band. Single band data are used to study intraday flux variability and two or more bands quasi-simultaneous observations allow us to search for colour variation in the source. We employ the power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test to search for genuine flux and color variations in the light curves of the blazar on intraday timescales. Out of 12, 11, 53, and 5 nights observations, intraday variations with amplitudes between ~3% and ~20% are detected in 9, 8, 31 and 3 nights in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively, corresponding to duty cycles of 75%, 73%, 58% and 60%. These duty cycles are lower than those typically measured at earlier times. On these timescales color variations with both bluer-when-brighter and redder-when-brighter are seen, though nights with no measurable colour variation are also present. We briefly discuss possible explanations for this observed intraday variability.

Abstract:Well-sampled optical and radio light curves of BL Lacertae in B, V, R, I bands and 4.8, 8.0, 14.5 GHz from 1968 to 2014 were presented in this paper. A possible $1.26 \pm 0.05$ yr period in optical bands and a $7.50 \pm 0.15$ yr period in radio bands were detected based on discrete correlation function, structure function as well as Jurkevich method. Correlations among different bands were also analyzed and no reliable time delay was found between optical bands. Very weak correlations were detected between V band and radio bands. However, in radio bands the variation at low frequency lagged that at high frequency obviously. The spectrum of BL Lacertae turned mildly bluer when the object turned brighter, and stronger bluer-when-brighter trends were found for short flares. A scenario including a precessing helical jet and periodic shocks was put forward to interpret the variation characteristics of BL Lacertae.

Optical intraday variability analysis for the BL Lacertae object 1ES 1426+42.8

Abstract:The observation data of blazar 1ES 1426 + 42.8 were obtained using the 1.02 m optical telescope of Yunnan Observatories during $2021$ to $2023$. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. We use the turbulent model to investigate the mechanism of IDV in 1ES 1426 + 42.8. The fitting light curves match the actual IDV curves well. Using this model, we obtain the parameters such as the size of turbulent cells and the width of pulses in the jet. A possible short-lived Quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of $58.55 \pm 8.09$ minutes was detected on April 26, 2022 whose light curve exhibits eight cycles at $>3\sigma$ global significance and confirmed by several different techniques. Through a more detailed analysis of the light curve of this night, we find that the period is shortened from 54.23 minutes ($4\sigma$) to 29.71 minutes ($3\sigma$). The possible QPO and period shortening phenomenon are best explained by the processes of magnetic reconnections.

Abstract:We report results of multiband optical monitoring of two well known blazars, S5 0716+714 and BL Lacertae, carried out in 1996 and 2000-01 with an aim to study optical variations on time scales from minutes to hours and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://longer.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> light curves were derived relative to comparison stars present on the CCD frames. Night to night flux variations of >0.1 mag were observed in S5 0716+714 during a campaign of ~2 weeks in 1996.A good correlation between the lightcurves in different optical bands was found for both inter-night and intra-night observations. Two prominent events of intra-night optical variability were detected in S5 0716+<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://714.Each" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> of these rapidly varying segments of the lightcurves trace an exponential flux profile whose rate of variation is the same in both cases. Our long-term monitoring data of S5 0716+714 showed a distinct flare around JD 2451875 which can be identified in the BVRI <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bands.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> flare coincides with the brightest phase recorded during 1994-2001 in the long-term lightcurves reported by Raiteri et al.(2003). No evidence for the bluer when brighter trend was noticed on inter-night and intra-night time scales. On the other hand, our nearly simultaneous multiband observations of BL Lacertae in October 2001 showed flux variations that were not achromatic. This blazar was found to become bluer when brighter on intra-night time scales and there is a hint of the same trend on inter-night time scales. Based on five nights of observations during a week, BL Lacertae showed a peak night-to-night variability of ~0.6 mag in B. Thus, we found that the present observations of the two blazars, reveal a contrasting behaviour in terms of the dependence of spectral hardening with increasing brightness, at least on intra-night, and possibly also on inter-night, time scales.

Optical Monitoring of Bl Lacertae Object S5 0716+714 with High Temporal Resolution

Abstract:Optical monitoring of S5 0716+714 was performed with a 60/90 Schmidt telescope in 2003 November and December and 2004 January for studying the variability of the object on short timescales. Because of the high brightness of the source, we could carry out quasi-simultaneous measurements in three bands with a temporal resolution of about 20 minutes by using one single telescope. Intraday and intranight variations were observed, showing an overall change of ∼0.9 mag during the whole campaign. Two outbursts were recorded on Julian Dates 2,453,005 and 2,453,009. Minimum timescales of a few hours were derived from the light curves of individual nights, but they were different from night to night. A bluer-when-brighter chromatism was present when the object was showing a fast flare but was absent when it was in a relatively quiescent state. Our results are basically consistent with the shock-in-jet model and demonstrate that geometric effects can sometimes play an important role in the variability of blazars.

Abstract:We carried out a pilot campaign of radio and optical band intra-day variability (IDV) observations of five blazars (3C66A, S5 0716+714, OJ287, B0925+504 and BL Lacertae) on 2015 December 18-21 by using the radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany) and several optical telescopes in Asia, Europe and America. After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the amplitudes and time-scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity. The blazars vary significantly in the radio (except 3C66A and BL Lacertae with only marginal variations) and optical bands on intra-and inter-day time-scales, and the source B0925+504 exhibits a strong quasi-periodic radio variability. No significant correlation between the radio-and optical-band variability appears in the five sources, which we attribute to the radio IDV being dominated by interstellar scintillation whereas the optical variability comes from the source itself. However, the radio and optical-band variations appear to be weakly correlated in some sources and should be investigated based on well-sampled data from future observations.
Analysis of the intra-night variability of BL Lacertae during its August 2020 flare

Abstract:We present an analysis of the $BVRI$ photometry of the blazar BL Lacertae on diverse timescales from mid-July to mid-September 2020. We have used 11 different optical telescopes around the world and have collected data over 84 observational nights. The observations cover the onset of a new activity phase of BL Lacertae started in August 2020 (termed as the August 2020 flare by us), and the analysis is focused on the intra-night variability. On short-term timescales, (i) flux varied with ~2.2\,mag in $R$ band, (ii) the spectral index was found to be weakly dependent on the flux (i.e., the variations could be considered mildly chromatic) and (iii) no periodicity was detected. On intra-night timescales, BL Lacertae was found to show bluer-when-brighter chromatism predominantly. We also found two cases of significant inter-band time lags of the order of a few minutes. The duty cycle of the blazar during the August 2020 flare was estimated to be quite high (~90\% or higher). We decomposed the intra-night light curves into individual flares and determined their characteristics. On the basis of our analysis and assuming the turbulent jet model, we determined some characteristics of the emitting regions: Doppler factor, magnetic field strength, electron Lorentz factor, and radius. The radii determined were discussed in the framework of the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence. We also estimated the weighted mean structure function slope on intra-night timescales, related it to the slope of the power spectral density, and discussed it with regard to the origin of intra-night variability.

Abstract:In this work, we report the presence of rapid intra-night optical variations in both -- flux and polarization of the blazar BL Lacertae during its unprecedented 2020--2021 high state of brightness. The object showed significant flux variability and some color changes, but no firmly detectable time delays between the optical bands. The linear polarization was also highly variable in both -- polarization degree and angle (EVPA). The object was observed from several observatories throughout the world, covering in a total of almost 300 hours during 66 nights. Based on our results, we suggest, that the changing Doppler factor of an ensemble of independent emitting regions, travelling along a curved jet that at some point happens to be closely aligned with the line of sight can successfully reproduce our observations during this outburst. This is one of the most extensive variability studies of the optical polarization of a blazar on intra-night timescales.

Microvariability in BL Lac: Zooming into the Innermost Blazar Regions

Abstract:In this work, we present the results of our multi-band microvariability study of the famous blazar BL Lac. We performed microvariablity observations of the source in the optical VRI bands for 4 nights in the year 2016. We studied the intranight flux and spectral variability of the source in detail with an objective to characterize microvariability in the blazars, a frequently observed phenomenon in blazars. The results show that the source often displays a fast flux variability with an amplitude as large as ~ 0.2 magnitude within a few hours, and that the color variability in the similar time scales can be characterized as "bluer-when-brighter" trend. We also observed markedly curved optical spectrum during one of the nights. Furthermore, the correlation between multi-band emission shows that in general the emission in all the bands are highly correlated; and in one of the nights V band emission was found to lead the I band emission by ~ 20 minutes. The search for characteristic timescale using auto-correlation function and the structure function analyses reveals characteristic timescale of ~ 48 minutes in one of the R band observations. We try to explain the observed results in the context of the passage of shock waves through the relativistic outflows in blazars.

Investigating Optical Variability of the Blazar S5 0716+714 On Diverse Time-scales

Abstract:We present the results of the observational study of the blazar S5 0716+716 in the optical bands B, V, R, and I between March 2019 and August 2023 to investigate its variability on diverse time-scales. The blazar was followed up by the T60 robotic telescope in Turkey for 416 nights to obtain long-term variability during this period. In order to search for intraday variability of the object, we have carried out 21 nights of observations with the T100 telescope for at least 1 hour. The blazar showed a ~2.47 mag variation in the optical R-band during our monitoring period, the brightest state on 18.01.2020 (MJD 58866) as R=12.109$\pm$0.011 and the faintest state on 23.03.2019 (MJD 58565) as R=14.580$\pm$0.013. We employed the nested ANOVA test and the power enhanced F-test to quantify intraday variability which showed that the blazar was significantly variable in the R-band on 12 out of 21 nights. Correlation analysis of the light curves shows that the emission in the BVRI optical bands was strongly correlated both in the short and long term without any time lag. The blazar has likely quasi-periods of 186$\pm$30, 532$\pm$76 days in the optical R-band light curve according to the WWZ, and the LS periodogram. The IDV and LTV features are discussed within the frame of prospective scenarios.

Abstract:This paper presents optical BVRI photometry of the intermediate-energy-peaked BL Lac object ON 231 (W Comae). It was observed for five nights during 2010 March-April with the 80-cm Tsinghua-NAOC Telescope (TNT). Although no extremely large variations were seen on either intra-or internight time-scales, a flare-like event was recorded on March 17. On a time-scale of similar to 5 h, the source exhibited a change of similar to 0.15 mag in the B band and variations of similar to 0.1 mag in V, R and I bands. On either intra-or internight time-scales, the variability amplitudes appear to be larger for shorter wavelengths. Cross-correlation analysis suggests that the R-band variations lagged the B-band ones by similar to 1200 s on March 17. To our best knowledge, this is the first time that a time lag has been claimed for the optical variability of ON 231. Bluer-when-brighter trends were present for all intranight variations. On the plot of B - R colour indices against B magnitudes, however, the correlations between the two parameters shifted vertically relative to each other on different nights, indicating that the source slightly changed its optical spectral slope from night to night. The averaged spectral energy distributions of each night are similar, perhaps the consequence of low-amplitude variability during our observational season. The intranight optical variations of ON 231, along with those of other similar sources, e. g. BL Lacertae and S5 0716+714, are quite similar to those of high-energy-peaked BL Lac objects. Both can be ascribed to synchrotron emission produced by the most energetic relativistic electrons residing in the magnetized relativistic jet roughly aligned with our line of sight.
Optical Monitoring and Intraday Variabilities of the BL Lac Object PKS 0735+178

Abstract:Within a monitored duration of more than 7 yr, we obtained 1358 pairs of gri observations (514 at the g band, 393 at the r band, and 451 at the i band) for PKS0735+178 with a 1.26 m telescope in 20 nights from 2015 February 24 to 2016 April 28, and 98 VRI observations (27 at the V band, 35 at the R band, and 36 at the I band) with a 1.56 m telescope in 8 nights from 2009 January 13 to 2014 March 17. Based on the observations and analyses, we obtained the following results. (1) The maximum variation was 2.69 mag at the g band, and the largest intraday variations were Δmg = 0.89 ± 0.08 mag at the g band, Δmr = 0.38 ± 0.04 mag at the r band, and Δmi = 0.78 ± 0.15 mag at the i band. (2) We analyzed the intraday observations and find intraday optical variabilities with minimum timescales of ΔTg = 10.08 minutes, ΔTr = 10.08 minutes, and ΔTi = 10.08 minutes. (3) The variability rates of the magnitudes with time were consistent at three bands not only in the dimming stages but also in the brightening stages. (4) On 2016 January 19, we found intraday periodic oscillations, with a period P = 66.9 ± 4.1 minutes, based on which we calculated the mass to be in the approximate range of 1.5 × 107M⊙ to ~8.9 × 107M⊙. (5) Based on our data and observations from the literature, we built long-term lightcurves of more than 100 yr and obtained two quasi-periods of P = 0.9 ± 0.4 yr and 12.4 ± 0.6 yr.

Abstract:Variability is one of the extreme observational properties of BL Lacertae objects. AO 0235+164 is a well studied BL Lac through the whole electro-magnetic wavebands. In the present work, we show its optical R band photometric observations carried out during the period of Nov, 2006 to Dec. 2012 using the Ap6E CCD camera attached to the primary focus of the $\rm 70-cm$ meniscus telescope at Abastumani Observatory, Georgia. It shows a large variation of $\Delta R$ = 4.88 mag (14.19 - 19.07 mag) and a short time scale of $\Delta T_v$ = 73.5 min during our monitoring period. During the period of Dec. 2006 to Nov. 2009, we made radio observations of the source using the 25-m radio telescope at Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. When a discrete correlation function (DCF) is adopted to the optical and radio observations, we found that the optical variation leads the radio variation by 23.2$\pm$12.9 days.
