Abstract:A hybrid lithium-ion anode material, made of acid-functionalized carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and amino modified Si nanoparticles (SiNPs), was synthesized by fast homogeneous electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Regular distribution of SiNPs in the three dimensional electro-active frameworks with the help of the interactions of surface functional groups can effectively improve the electron transport and restrict volume expansion during Li insertion/extraction. The as-deposited composite film exhibits a stable capacity of 790 mAh g-1 for 100 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g-1. The stability of suspension and weight ratio of Si to CNFs plays the key roles in the electrochemical performance. It provides a possible environmentally friendly and cost-effective preparation method for future high-performance Li-ion battery applications.
Reduced Graphene Oxide-Encaged Submicron-Silicon Anode Interfacially Stabilized by Al2O3 Nanoparticles for Efficient Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon-carbon composites have been recognized as some of the most promising anode candidates for advancing new-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The development of high-efficiency silicon/graphene anodes through a simple and cost-effective preparation route is significant. Herein, by using micron silicon as raw material, we designed a mesoporous composite of silicon/alumina/reduced graphene oxide (Si/Al2O3/RGO) via a two-step ball milling combined annealing process. Commercial Al2O3 nanoparticles are introduced as an interlayer due to the toughening effect, while RGO nanosheets serve as a conductive and elastic coating to protect active submicron silicon particles during lithium alloying/dealloying reactions. Owing to the rational porous structure and dual protection strategy, the core/shell structured Si/Al2O3/RGO composite is efficient for Li+ storage and demonstrates improved electrical conductivity, accelerated charge transfer and electrolyte diffusion, and especially high structural stability upon charge/discharge cycling. As a consequence, Si/Al2O3/RGO yields a high discharge capacity of 852 mA h g-1 under a current density of 500 mA g-1 even after 200 cycles, exhibiting a high capacity retention of ∼85%. Besides, Si/Al2O3/RGO achieves excellent cycling reversibility and superb high-rate capability with a stable specific capacity of 405 mA h g-1 at 3000 mA g-1. Results demonstrate that the Al2O3 interlayer is synergistic with the indispensable RGO nanosheet shells, affording more buffer space for silicon cores to alleviate the mechanical expansion and thus stabilizing active silicon species during charge/discharge cycles. This work provides an alternative low-cost approach to achieving high-capacity silicon/carbon composites for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Composites of graphene-wrapped Si nanoparticles (NPs) have been assembled via a one-pot liquid nitrogen fast freezing followed by a thermal reduction. It is found that, as a self-support and binder-free anode of lithium-ion battery, the composited graphene is helpful to form a uniform morphology, reduce the resistance of the electrode and isolate the Si NPs from the electrolyte to suppress the formation of unstable solid electrolyte interphase. Moreover, it can buffer the strain from the volume change of the Si NPs. The composite with an optimized mass ratio of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to Si NPs exhibits significantly improved lithium storage performance with an excellent rate capability and a large reversible capacity of 1482 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 210 mA g(-1) after 300 cycles. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction kinetics and interfacial behavior of the rGO/Si composites are investigated in-depthly. Abstract:A novel binder-free reduced graphene oxide/silicon (RGO/Si) composite anode has been fabricated by a facile doctor-blade coating method. The relatively low C/O ratio plays an important role for the fabrication of the bind-free multilayered RGO/Si electrode with silicon nanoparticles encapsulating among the RGO sheet layers. The RGO provides the electron transport pathway and prevents the electrode fracture caused by the volume changes of active silicon particles during cycling. The RGO/Si composite anode with a silicon content of 66.7% delivers a reversible capacity of 1931 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) and still remains 92% of the initial capacity after 50 cycles. Abstract:Silicon-carbon nanocomposite materials are widely adopted in the anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIB). However, the lithium ion (Li+) transportation is hampered due to the significant accumulation of silicon nanoparticles (Si) and the change in their volume, which leads to decreased battery performance. In an attempt to optimize the electrode structure, we report on a self-assembly synthesis of silicon nanoparticles@nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanofiber (Si@N-doped rGO/CNF) composites as potential high-performance anodes for LIB through electrostatic attraction. A large number of vacancies or defects on the graphite plane are generated by N atoms, thus providing transmission channels for Li+ and improving the conductivity of the electrode. CNF can maintain the stability of the electrode structure and prevent Si from falling off the electrode. The three-dimensional composite structure of Si, N-doped rGO, and CNF can effectively buffer the volume changes of Si, form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), and shorten the transmission distance of Li+ and the electrons, while also providing high conductivity and mechanical stability to the electrode. The Si@N-doped rGO/CNF electrode outperforms the Si@N-doped rGO and Si/rGO/CNF electrodes in cycle performance and rate capability, with a reversible specific capacity reaching 1276.8 mAh/g after 100 cycles and a Coulomb efficiency of 99%.

Abstract:A novel one-pot chemical dealloying method has been developed to prepare nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and silicon dendrite from cheap commercial Al-Si eutectic precursor. The RGO anchoring could act as both conductive agent and buffer layer for Si volume change in the application of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The Si/RGO composites show an initial reversible capacity of 2280 mAh g(-1) excellent capacity retention of 1942 mAh g(-1) even after 100 cycles, and a high capacity of 1521 mAh g(-1) even at the rate of 4000 mA g(-1). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement proved that Si/RGO composite has the lower charge transfer resistance. Abstract:Abstract We report the interfacial study of a silicon/carbon nanofiber/graphene composite as a potentially high-performance anode for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Silicon nanoparticle (Si)/carbon nanofiber (CNF)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite films were prepared by simple physical filtration and an environmentally-friendly thermal reduction treatment. The films were used as high-performance anode materials for self-supporting, binder-free LIBs. Reducing graphene oxide improves the electron conductivity and adjusts to the volume change during repeated charge/discharge processes. CNFs can help maintain the structural stability and prevent the peeling off of silicon nanoparticles from the electrodes. When the fabricated Si/CNF/rGO composites were used as anodes of LIBs, the initial specific capacity was measured to be 1894.54 mAh/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g. After 100 cycles, the reversible specific capacity was maintained at 964.68 mAh/g, and the coulombic efficiency could reach 93.8% at the same current density. The Si/CNF/rGO composite electrode exhibited a higher specific capacity and cycle stability than an Si/rGO composite electrode. The Si/CNF/rGO composite films can effectively accommodate and buffer changes in the volume of silicon nanoparticles, form a stable solid–electrolyte interface, improve the conductivity of the electrode, and provide a fast and efficient channel for electron and ion transport.

Precursor Induced Assembly of Si Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Graphene/Carbon Matrices and the Influence of Al2O3 Coating on their Properties as Anode for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:A porous composite of Si@rGO@C‐SD‐AlO has been fabricated by using a precursor induced assembly strategy and combined with the spray drying and an atomic layer deposition process. Protonated chitosan plays the dual roles of inducer for the assembly of graphene oxide sheets and the precursor for amorphous carbon. The composite can be used as a high‐performance anode for lithium‐ion batteries and it shows superior electrochemical performance, for example, excellent multiplicative performance (806 mAh g−1 at 5000 mA g−1), preferable initial Coulomb efficiency (up to 76.7%), high reversible capacity (1477 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 500 mA g−1), and excellent long‐cycle cycling stability (930 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g−1). The theoretical capacity of pristine silicon as anodes for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) can reach up to 4200 mAh g−1, however, the low electrical conductivity and the huge volume expansion limit their practical application. To address this challenge, a precursor strategy has been explored to induce the curling of graphene oxide (GO) flakes and the enclosing of Si nanoparticles by selecting protonated chitosan as both assembly inducer and carbon precursor. The Si nanoparticles are dispersed first in a slurry of GO by ball milling, then the resulting dispersion is dried by a spray drying process to achieve instantaneous solution evaporation and compact encapsulation of silicon particles with GO. An Al2O3 layer is constructed on the surface of Si@rGO@C‐SD composites by the atomic layer deposition method to modify the solid electrolyte interface. This strategy enhances obviously the electrochemical performance of the Si as anode for LIBs, including excellent long‐cycle stability of 930 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g−1, satisfied initial Coulomb efficiency of 76.7%, and high rate ability of 806 mAh g−1 at 5000 mA g−1. This work shows a potential solution to the shortcomings of Si‐based anodes and provides meaningful insights for constructing high‐energy anodes for LIBs.

Abstract:By virtue of the high theoretical capacity of Si, Si-related materials have been developed as promising anode candidates for high-energy-density batteries. During repeated charge/discharge cycling, however, severe volumetric variation induces the pulverization and peeling of active components, causing rapid capacity decay and even development stagnation in high-capacity batteries. In this study, the Si/Fe2O3-anchored rGO framework was prepared by introducing ball milling into a melt spinning and dealloying process. As the Li-ion battery (LIB) anode, it presents a high reversible capacity of 1744.5 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and 889.4 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 after 500 cycles. The outstanding electrochemical performance is due to the three-dimensional cross-linked porous framework with a high specific surface area, which is helpful to the transmission of ions and electrons. Moreover, with the cooperation of rGO, the volume expansion of Si is effectively alleviated, thus improving cycling stability. The work provides insights for the design and preparation of Si-based materials for high-performance LIB applications.

Rational Design Of Robust Nano-Si/Graphite Nanocomposites Anodes With Strong Interfacial Adhesion For High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The nano-Si/graphite nanocomposites are the promising anodes candidates for high-energy lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities and low volume variations. However, the nano-Si has a severe tendency to separate from the graphite substrate due to the inherently weak bonding between them, thus leading to the deteriorated cycling performance and low Coulombic efficiency. Herein, we design a robust nano-Si/graphite nanocomposite structure with strong interfacial adhesion caused by the Si-Ti and Ti-C covalent bonds. The abundant Si-Ti and Ti-C bonds formed between nano-Si and graphite greatly enhance the interfacial adhesion force, resulting in the highly stabilized and integrated electrode structure during battery cycling. Consequently, the as-obtained nano-Si/graphite anodes deliver a high capacity retention of 90.0% after 420 cycles at 0.5 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.5%; moreover, a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 90.2% is achieved. Significantly, this work provides a novel strategy to address the poor interfacial adhesion between nano-Si and graphite, which can be applied to other nano-Si based composites anodes. Abstract:A Si/porous reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite film synthesized by evaporation and leavening method are developed as a high-performance anode material for lithium ion batteries. The porous structure as buffer base can effectively release the volume expansion of the silicon particles, increase the electrical conductivity and reduce the transfer resistance of Li ions. The Si/porous rGO composite film presents high specific capacity and good cycling stability (1261mAhg−1 at 50mAg−1 up to 70 cycles), as well as enhanced rate capability. This approach to prepare such a unique structure is a low-cost and facile route for the silicon-based anode materials.
Graphene Encapsulated Fe3O4 Nanorods Assembled into a Mesoporous Hybrid Composite Used As a High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Material

Abstract:The discovery of new anode materials and engineering their fine structures are the core elements in the development of new-generation lithium ion batteries (LIBs). To this end, we herein report a novel nanostructured composite consisting of approximately 75% Fe3O4 nanorods and 25% reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Microscopy and spectroscopy analyses have identified that the Fe3O4 nanorods are wrapped (or encapsulated) by the rGO nanosheets via covalent bonding, which further self-assemble into a mesoporous hybrid composite networked by the graphene matrix. The composite has an average pore size around 20 nm and exhibits a high surface area of 152 m2 g−1, which is 76 times as high as that of conventional Fe3O4 powder. We have used the composite as an LIB anode material to fabricate coin-type prototype cells with lithium as the cathode. Systematic half-cell testing evaluations show that the electrochemical performance of the present composite material is amongst the best of the transition metal-oxide based LIB anode materials. The performances are characterized by a high reversible capacity of 1053 mA h g−1 subjected to 250 charge–discharge cycles at 500 mA g−1 and an excellent rate capability with the deliverable energy of 788–541 mA h g−1 upon the application of high current densities of 1000–5000 mA g−1. Overall, we have demonstrated that Fe3O4 nanorod–rGO hybrid composite is an interesting and promising material for the fabrication of LIB anodes.
Ultrathin Si Nanosheets Dispersed in Graphene Matrix Enable Stable Interface and High Rate Capability of Anode for Lithium-ion Batteries

Abstract:Owing to the thinness and large lateral size, 2D Si materials exhibit very promising prospects as the high-performance anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the facile synthesis of ultrathin 2D Si nanosheets (Si-NSs) and their efficient application still remain a great challenge. Herein, the fabrication of ultrathin Si-NSs with the average thickness of <2 nm is demonstrated using a unique etching-reduction protocol. After hybridizing with graphene, the as-prepared Si-NSs@rGO material delivers ultrahigh rate capability (2395.8 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 A g(-1) and 1727.3 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)), long cycling lifespan (1000 cycles at 2 A g(-1) with a capacity decay rate of 0.05% per cycle) and high average Coulombic efficiency (99.85% during 1000 cycles). The superior performance is attributed to the ultrathinness of Si-NSs that greatly improves the diffusivity and reversibility of Li+ ions. This work provides a strategy for fabricating a high-rate-capability anode material to meet the growing demand for high power density LIBs.

Abstract:Improving the Li storage properties of a Si negative electrode is of great significance for Li-ion batteries. A major challenge is to fabricate Si-based active materials with good electronic conduction and structural integrity in the process of discharging and charging. In this study, novel Si nanoparticles-graphene composites have been synthesized by hybrid electrostatic assembly between positively charged aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified Si nanoparticles and negatively charged graphene oxide, followed by thermal reduction. Commercially available Si nanoparticles are well embedded and uniformly dispersed into the graphene sheets, and the typically wrinkled graphene sheets form a network and cover the highly dispersed Si nanoparticles well. No any obvious aggregation of the Si nanoparticles can be found and many nanospaces exist around the Si nanoparticles, which provide buffering spaces needed for volume changes of Si nanoparticles during insertion/extraction of Li. High capacity and long cycle life (822 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1)) have been realized in the novel Si nanoparticles-graphene composites for Li-ion batteries. The excellent electrochemical performance is ascribed to the uniform distribution of Si nanoparticles and graphene, which effectively prevents aggregation and pulverization of Si nanoparticles, keeps the overall electrode highly conductive, and maintains the stability of the structure.

Abstract:Silicon is a highly promising anode material of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) for its low insertion voltage and high reversible capacity. A flexible, honeycomb-like film of reduced graphene (RGO)/Si nanoparticles (NPs) composite with a thickness as thick as 25 pm is synthesized by a facile vacuum filter assembly process. The Si NPs are enwrapped into the RGO sheets with an areal density of 0.65 mg cm(-2). The ultra-thick composite film is directly employed as an anode for LIBs without using any binder and conductive additive. The flexible RGO sheet coat enables the electrode to maintain the structural integrity and provide continuous conductive paths for Si NPs. The electrode exhibits a high capacity of 2370 mA h g(-1) over 50 cycles at a current of 210 mA g(-1) and a capacity higher than 1000 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 4200 mA g(-1) after 500 cycles. Especially, the electrode exhibits excellent rate capability, indicating that it may be applied to the high-power LIBs as a flexible, high areal capacity, binder-free and free-standing anode. Abstract:In this paper, the self-charged graphene and the nano-silicon modified with positive charge were self -assembled by electrostatic self-assembly method, and then the dopamine bonding characteristics was used to nitrogen-doped carbon coating of the composite material to obtain Si/rGO@CN composites, and the effect of different thicknesses of nitrogen-doped carbon layers on the electrochemical performance of the composite materials was studied by changing the concentration and polymerization time of dopamine. The electrochemical results showed that when the content of nitrogen-doped carbon was 23.6%(mass fraction), the composite showed excellent electro- chemical performance. The capacity of the composite was 943.4 mA center dot h/g after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A/g, and its capacity remained at 753.8 mA center dot h/g after 300 cycles in the long cycle performance test at a current density of 1.0 A/g. The uniform continuous coating of the nitrogen-doped carbon layer can not only avoid the direct contact between silicon and electrolyte, but also buffer the volume expansion generated by silicon nanomaterials during lithium intercalation and maintain the stability of the material structure. The presence of graphene improves the conductivity of composite materials.
Facile synthesis of Fe-MOF/RGO and its application as a high performance anode in lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:The use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as new promising electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted significant attention. However, the low electrical conductivity of MOFs has resulted in the poor cycle performance of LIBs. Here, we report a facile synthesis route of Fe-MOF/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites using a solvothermal method. When used as anode materials for LIBs, the synthesized Fe-MOF/RGO (5%) composite shows superior Li storage with a reversible capacity of 1010.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles and an excellent rate performance. The improved electrochemical performance may be attributed to the synergistic effect of MOFs with high theoretical capacities and RGO with high electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) has been widely investigated as anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the huge volume expansion and low electrical conductivity limit its practical application to some extent. Here, we prepared a composite structure in which the ammonia-modified Si NPs well encapsulated in graphene oxide (GO) through electrostatic attraction are further wrapped by amorphous carbon. The GO with good flexibility can well buffer the volume expansion of Si NPs, while the amorphous carbon in the outer layer is synergistically constructed with GO as a second protective layer for Si NPs. The ternary composite (Si/G/C) approach greatly ensures the structural integrity of the composites and have excellent cycling as well as rate performance compared to Si/reduced graphene oxide and Si/carbon composites. For the Si/G/C, at a current density of 1 A/g, it can be stably cycled over 267 times with 70% capacity maintained (only 0.0711% capacity reduction per cycle).

Abstract:Silicon has been touted as one of the most promising anode materials for next generation lithium ion batteries. Yet, how to build energetic silicon-based electrode architectures by addressing the structural and interfacial stability issues facing silicon anodes still remains a big challenge. Here, we develop a novel kind of self-supporting binder-free silicon-based anodes via the encapsulation of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) with dual adaptable apparels (overlapped graphene (G) sheaths and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) overcoats). In the resulted architecture (namely, SiNW@G@RGO), the overlapped graphene sheets, as adaptable but sealed sheaths, prevent the direct exposure of encapsulated silicon to the electrolyte and enable the structural and interfacial stabilization of silicon nanowires. Meanwhile, the flexible and conductive RGO overcoats accommodate the volume change of embedded SiNW@G nanocables and thus maintain the structural and electrical integrity of the SiNW@G@RGO. As a result, the SiNW@G@RGO electrodes exhibit high reversible specific capacity of 1600 mAh g⁻¹ at 2.1 A g⁻¹, 80% capacity retention after 100 cycles, and superior rate capability (500 mAh g⁻¹ at 8.4 A g⁻¹) on the basis of the total electrode weight.
