Abstract:Presented is a review of the radiative properties of ice clouds from three perspectives: light scattering simulations, remote sensing applications, and broadband radiation parameterizations appropriate for numerical models. On the subject of light scattering simulations, several classical computational approaches are reviewed, including the conventional geometric-optics method and its improved forms, the finite-difference time domain technique, the pseudo-spectral time domain technique, the discrete dipole approximation method, and the T-matrix method, with specific applications to the computation of the singlescattering properties of individual ice crystals. The strengths and weaknesses associated with each approach are discussed.With reference to remote sensing, operational retrieval algorithms are reviewed for retrieving cloud optical depth and effective particle size based on solar or thermal infrared(IR) bands. To illustrate the performance of the current solar- and IR-based retrievals, two case studies are presented based on spaceborne observations. The need for a more realistic ice cloud optical model to obtain spectrally consistent retrievals is demonstrated. Furthermore, to complement ice cloud property studies based on passive radiometric measurements, the advantage of incorporating lidar and/or polarimetric measurements is discussed.The performance of ice cloud models based on the use of different ice habits to represent ice particles is illustrated by comparing model results with satellite observations. A summary is provided of a number of parameterization schemes for ice cloud radiative properties that were developed for application to broadband radiative transfer submodels within general circulation models(GCMs). The availability of the single-scattering properties of complex ice habits has led to more accurate radiation parameterizations. In conclusion, the importance of using nonspherical ice particle models in GCM simulations for climate studies is proven.

Abstract:A combination of the invariant imbedding T-matrix (II-TM) method, the improved geometric-optics method (IGOM), and the pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) method provides advanced modeling capabilities to simulate the single-scattering properties of ice crystals for the entire size parameter range. The downstream applications of the single-scattering properties simulated from the new modeling capabilities, and, consequently, the bulk radiative properties render significant improvements, particularly, in remote sensing implementations involving ice clouds. Furthermore, the single-scattering properties of individual ice crystals are simulated. In addition, a sensitivity study is performed regarding the application of the single-scattering properties to remote sensing of ice cloud properties based on spaceborne observations.
Single-scattering Properties of Ice Particles in the Microwave Regime: Temperature Effect on the Ice Refractive Index with Implications in Remote Sensing

Abstract:An ice crystal single-scattering property database is developed in the microwave spectral region (1 to 874GHz) to provide the scattering, absorption, and polarization properties of 12 ice crystal habits (10-plate aggregate, 5-plate aggregate, 8-column aggregate, solid hexagonal column, hollow hexagonal column, hexagonal plate, solid bullet rosette, hollow bullet rosette, droxtal, oblate spheroid, prolate spheroid, and sphere) with particle maximum dimensions from 2µm to 10mm. For each habit, four temperatures (160, 200, 230, and 270K) are selected to account for temperature dependence of the ice refractive index. The microphysical and scattering properties include projected area, volume, extinction efficiency, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and six independent nonzero phase matrix elements (i.e. P11, P12, P22, P33, P43 and P44). The scattering properties are computed by the Invariant Imbedding T-Matrix (II-TM) method and the Improved Geometric Optics Method (IGOM). The computation results show that the temperature dependence of the ice single-scattering properties in the microwave region is significant, particularly at high frequencies. Potential active and passive remote sensing applications of the database are illustrated through radar reflectivity and radiative transfer calculations. For cloud radar applications, ignoring temperature dependence has little effect on ice water content measurements. For passive microwave remote sensing, ignoring temperature dependence may lead to brightness temperature biases up to 5K in the case of a large ice water path.

Light Scattering by Hexagonal Ice Crystals with Distributed Inclusions

Abstract:Inclusions of air bubbles or soot particles have significant effects on the single-scattering properties of ice crystals, effects that in turn have significant impacts on the radiation budget of an atmosphere containing the crystals. This study investigates some of the single-scattering effects in the case of hexagonal ice crystals, including effects on the backscattering depolarization ratio, a quantity of practical importance in the interpretation of lidar observations. One distinguishing feature of the study is an investigation of scattering properties at a visible wavelength for a crystal with size parameter (x) above 100, a size regime where one expects some agreement between exact methods and geometrical optics methods. This expectation is generally borne out in a test comparison of how the sensitivity of scattering properties to the distribution of a given volume fraction of included air is represented using (i) an approximate Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) method and (ii) a numerically exact pseudo-spectral time-domain (PSTD) method. Another distinguishing feature of the study is a close examination, using the numerically exact Invariant-Imbedding T-Matrix (II-TM) method, of how some optical properties of importance to satellite remote sensing vary as the volume fraction of inclusions and size of crystal are varied. Although such an investigation of properties in the x>100 regime faces serious computational burdens that force a large number of idealizations and simplifications in the study, the results nevertheless provide an intriguing glimpse of what is evidently a quite complex sensitivity of optical scattering properties to inclusions of air or soot as volume fraction and size parameter are varied.
Simulation of the Color Ratio Associated with the Backscattering of Radiation by Ice Particles at the Wavelengths of 0.532 and 1.064 Μm

Abstract:This study explores a simulation of ice cloud optical properties similar to those observed using the Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), a dual‐wavelength (0.532 and 1.064 μm) lidar. The goal is to better understand the sensitivity of the color ratio (the ratio of the backscatter coefficients at the wavelengths of 1.064 and 0.532 μm) to ice particle habit. The single‐scattering properties of randomly oriented hexagonal ice particles are simulated from the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method for particles with size parameters less than 50, and from an improved geometric optics method (IGOM) for particles with larger size parameters (a quantity proportional to the ratio of the particle characteristic dimension to the incident wavelength). Based on the assumption that ice particles are hexagonal particles, the color ratio values are found to be less than unity with a peak value near 0.7 for columns and 0.8 for plates. If spherical ice particles are assumed, the color ratio values can be larger than unity and may even approach 2 for many size distributions. The deviation in the value of the color ratio from unity is due to different distributions of size parameters for the two wavelengths, and to smaller single‐scattering albedo values for large particles at 1.064 μm than at 0.532 μm. The present simulations of the color ratio for hexagonal columns are qualitatively consistent with measurements from a ground‐based lidar, located at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, which peak near 0.88, but the two results differ quantitatively by 10–20 percent.
Optical Properties of Nonspherical Atmospheric Particles and Relevant Applications

Abstract:Recent progress in the study of the single-scattering properties of nonspherical ice crystals within cirrus clouds and nonspherical dust particles is reviewed. We have been using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, the discrete dipole approximation (DDA), and an improved geometric optics method (IGOM) to compute the single-scattering properties of nonspherical particles. We have incorporated the so-called edge effect associated with the surface wave into the IGOM extinction and absorption efficiencies. The simulation results in the solar and thermal infrared spectral regimes are presented. Furthermore, the impacts of particle nonsphericity on downstream remote sensing implementations and radiative transfer simulations involving ice clouds and dust aerosols are also summarized.
Improved Ice Particle Optical Property Simulations in the Ultraviolet to Far-Infrared Regime

Abstract:To derive the bulk radiative properties of ice clouds, aircraft contrails and snow grains, which are fundamental to atmospheric radiative transfer calculations in downstream applications, it is necessary to accurately simulate the scattering of light by individual ice particles. An ice particle optical property database reported in 2013 (hereafter, TAMUice2013) is updated (hereafter, TAMUice2016) to incorporate recent advances in computation of the optical properties of nonspherical particles. Specifically, we employ the invariant imbedding T-matrix (II-TM) method to compute the optical properties of particles with small to moderate size parameters. Both versions use the Improved Geometric Optics Method (IGOM) to compute the optical properties of large ice crystals, but TAMUice2016 improves the treatment of inhomogeneous waves inside the scattering particles in the case where ice is absorptive such as at infrared wavelengths. To bridge the gap between the extinction efficiencies computed from the II-TM and the IGOM, TAMUice2016 includes spectrally dependent higher order terms of the edge effect in addition to the first order counterpart considered in TAMUice2013. Furthermore, the differences between TAMUice2013 and TAMUice2016 are quantified with respect to the computation of the bulk optical properties of ice clouds.

Abstract:Nonspherical ice crystal optical properties are of fundamental importance to atmospheric radiative transfer through an ice cloud and the remote sensing of its properties. In practice, the optical properties of individual ice crystals need to be integrated over particle size distributions to derive the bulk optical properties of ice clouds. Given a particle size distribution represented in terms of size bins, the conventional approach uses the microphysical and optical properties of ice crystals at the bin centers as approximations to the bin-averaged values. However, errors are incurred when the size bins are large. To reduce the potential errors, a kernel technique is utilized to calculate the bulk optical properties of ice clouds by computing the bin-averaged values instead of using the bin-center values. Comparisons between the solutions based on the conventional method and the kernel technique for different numbers of size bins from in situ measurements demonstrate that the results computed from the kernel technique are more accurate. The present study illustrates that, for a given size distribution, 40 or more size bins should be used to calculate the bulk optical properties of ice clouds by the conventional method. Although the accuracy of bulk-scattering properties can be improved by using fine bin resolutions in the single-scattering property computation, the advantage of using a precomputed database of scattering kernels allows efficient computation of ice cloud bulk optical properties without losing the accuracy.
Assessment of the Accuracy of the Conventional Ray-Tracing Technique: Implications in Remote Sensing and Radiative Transfer Involving Ice Clouds

Abstract:A fundamental problem in remote sensing and radiative transfer simulations involving ice clouds is the ability to compute accurate optical properties for individual ice particles. While relatively simple and intuitively appealing, the conventional geometric-optics method (CGOM) is used frequently for the solution of light scattering by ice crystals. Due to the approximations in the ray-tracing technique, the CGOM accuracy is not well quantified. The result is that the uncertainties are introduced that can impact many applications. Improvements in the Invariant Imbedding T-matrix method (II-TM) and the Improved Geometric-Optics Method (IGOM) provide a mechanism to assess the aforementioned uncertainties. The results computed by the II-TM+IGOM are considered as a benchmark because the II-TM solves Maxwell׳s equations from first principles and is applicable to particle size parameters ranging into the domain at which the IGOM has reasonable accuracy. To assess the uncertainties with the CGOM in remote sensing and radiative transfer simulations, two independent optical property datasets of hexagonal columns are developed for sensitivity studies by using the CGOM and the II-TM+IGOM, respectively. Ice cloud bulk optical properties obtained from the two datasets are compared and subsequently applied to retrieve the optical thickness and effective diameter from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements. Additionally, the bulk optical properties are tested in broadband radiative transfer (RT) simulations using the general circulation model (GCM) version of the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTMG) that is adopted in the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Atmosphere Model (CAM, version 5.1). For MODIS retrievals, the mean bias of uncertainties of applying the CGOM in shortwave bands (0.86 and 2.13μm) can be up to 5% in the optical thickness and as high as 20% in the effective diameter, depending on cloud optical thickness and effective diameter. In the MODIS infrared window bands centered at 8.5, 11, and 12μm, biases in the optical thickness and effective diameter are up to 12% and 10%, respectively. The CGOM-based simulation errors in ice cloud radiative forcing calculations are on the order of 10Wm−2.
Radiative Properties of Ice Crystals Within Cirrus Clouds: Application to Remote Sensing

Abstract:Ice clouds have been identified as one of the most uncertain components in atmospheric research. In recent years, the atmospheric radiative transfer and remote sensing community has made a concerted effort to improve the characterization of cirrus clouds. A number of airborne and balloon-borne observations have demonstrated that cirrus clouds are essentially composed of nonspherical ice crystals with various habits (or shapes) and sizes. In this paper, we report on some recent progresses towards the computation of the single-scattering properties nonspherical ice crystals and the relevant applications to remote sensing and radiative transfer simulations. Specifically, we have developed a database of the optical properties of ice crystals at the infrared wavelengths. In conjunction with the application of the scattering database, we also developed a fast infrared transfer model under cirrus cloudy condition, which is applied to the retrieval of ice clouds from satellite-based infrared measurements.

Abstract:To quantify the radiative forcing of ice clouds, we need to fully understand the optical and microphysical properties of these clouds. This paper reports on some preliminary results associated with the optical properties of ice crystals within ice clouds and the effect of ice crystal habit on the retrieval of ice cloud properties from use of the infrared spectrum. Furthermore, various cloud parameters retrieved from the atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) data are also reported.

Abstract:The single-scattering properties of ice particles in the near- through far-infrared spectral region are computed from a composite method that is based on a combination of the finite-difference time-domain technique, the T-matrix method, an improved geometrical-optics method, and Lorenz-Mie theory. Seven nonspherical ice crystal habits (aggregates, hexagonal solid and hollow columns, hexagonal plates, bullet rosettes, spheroids, and droxtals) are considered. A database of the single-scattering properties for each of these ice particles has been developed at 49 wavelengths between 3 and 100 microm and for particle sizes ranging from 2 to 10,000 microm specified in terms of the particle maximum dimension. The spectral variations of the single-scattering properties are discussed, as well as their dependence on the particle maximum dimension and effective particle size. The comparisons show that the assumption of spherical ice particles in the near-IR through far-IR region is generally not optimal for radiative transfer computation. Furthermore, a parameterization of the bulk optical properties is developed for mid-latitude cirrus clouds based on a set of 21 particle size distributions obtained from various field campaigns.

Abstract:Cloudy sky spectral radiance at the top of the atmosphere has always been an important while difficult variable to simulate for fast radiative transfer models. In this paper, we focus on examining the impacts of cloud scattering properties on the spectral radiance signature of the High-spectral Resolution Infrared Atmospheric Sounder (HIRAS) onboard the Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) satellite by using the Advanced Radiative transfer Modeling System (ARMS) and the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). Cloud scattering properties used in the radiative transfer models are critical for modeling the spectral radiance under cloudy sky, which involves choices of appropriate cloud particle models and particle size distributions, etc. Multiple FY-3D HIRAS observations over Southern China and Southeast Asia with ice or liquid water cloud cover on 6 May 2018 are examined, respectively. Vertical atmospheric profiles are derived from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 reanalysis product. Cloud property retrievals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer are used. Cloud scattering property parameterization schemes based on spherical and nonspherical cloud particle shapes are implemented for liquid water and ice clouds in ARMS and CRTM, respectively. Results show that both ARMS and CRTM can well simulate the radiance at the HIRAS spectral ranges under liquid water cloud condition as compared with the HIRAS observation with mean absolute error (MAE) of brightness temperature of less than 1 K. However, for ice cloud conditions, ARMS model using assumed spherical ice properties exhibits large biases between simulation and observation. CRTM with nonspherical ice properties using 16-stream approximation shows MAE less than 1 K and MAE of about 1 K using 2-stream approximation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Cirrus clouds play an important role in atmospheric radiation. Cirrus clouds are mainly composed of tiny ice crystals. Due to the development of industrialization, the ice crystal particles in cirrus may contain some pollutants. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the scattering properties of nucleated ice crystal particles. The research method of this paper is to use Python to write a model file of nucleated long hexagonal prism and flat regular hexagonal ice crystal particles. DDSCAT, an open source software package developed based on DDA, was used to read the model file and calculate the variation of extinction, scattering and absorption efficiency factors with wavelength and effective radius of the two models illuminated by a plane wave. The results show that Q(ext), Q(abs) and Q(sca) are sensitive to the number of ammonium sulfate nuclei and the shape of ice crystals. The results of this paper are expected to provide theoretical support for the study of cirrus scattering characteristics.

Abstract:This study summarizes recent improvements in the development of bulk scattering/absorption models at solar wavelengths. The approach combines microphysical measurements from various field campaigns with single-scattering properties for nine habits including droxtals, plates, solid/hollow columns, solid/hollow bullet rosettes, and several types of aggregates. Microphysical measurements are incorporated from a number of recent field campaigns in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. A set of 12 815 particle size distributions is used for which T-cd <= -40 degrees C. The ice water content in the microphysical data spans six orders of magnitude. For evaluation, a library of ice-particle single-scattering properties is employed for 101 wavelengths between 0.4 and 2.24 mu m. The library includes the full phase matrix as well as properties for smooth, moderately roughened, and severely roughened particles. Habit mixtures are developed for generalized cirrus, midlatitude cirrus, and deep tropical convection. The single-scattering properties are integrated over particle size and wavelength using an assumed habit mixture to develop bulk scattering and absorption properties. In comparison with global Cloud Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) data, models built with severely roughened particles compare best for all habit mixtures. The assumption of smooth particles provided the largest departure from CALIOP measurements. The use of roughened rather than smooth particles to infer optical thickness and effective diameter from satellite imagery such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) will result in a decrease in optical thickness and an increase in particle size.
Inference of ice cloud properties from high spectral resolution infrared observations

Abstract:The theoretical basis is explored for inferring the microphysical properties of ice clouds from high spectral resolution infrared (IR) observations. Extensive radiative transfer simulations are carried out to address relevant issues. The singlescattering properties of individual ice crystals are computed from state-of-the-art light scattering computational methods and are subsequently averaged for 30 in situparticle size distributions and for four additional analytical Gamma size distributions. The nonsphericity of ice crystals is shown to have a significant impact on the radiative signatures in the IR spectrum. Furthermore, the errors associated with the use of the Henyey–Greenstein phase function can be larger than 1 K in terms of brightness temperature for large particle effective sizes ($\sim 80~\mu \hbox {m}$) at wavenumbers where the scattering of the IR radiation by ice crystals is not negligible. The simulations undertaken in this paper show that the slope of the IR brightness temperature spectrum between 790–960 $\hbox {cm}^{-1}$ is sensitive to the effective particle size. Furthermore, a strong sensitivity of the IR brightness temperature to cloud optical thickness is noted within the 1050–1250-$\hbox {cm}^{-1}$ region. Based on these spectral features, a technique is presented for the simultaneous retrieval of the visible optical thickness and effective particle size from high spectral resolution IR data for ice clouds. An error analysis shows that the uncertainties of the retrieved optical thickness and effective particle size have a small range of variation. The error for retrieving particle size in conjunction with an uncertainty of 5 K in cloud temperature, or a surface temperature uncertainty of 2.5 K, is less than 15%. The corresponding errors in the uncertainty of optical thickness are within 5% to 20%, depending on the value of cloud optical thickness. The applicability of the present retrieval technique is demonstrated using airborne high-resolution IR measurements obtained during two field campaigns.

Abstract:An invariant imbedding T-matrix (II-TM) method is used to calculate the single-scattering properties of 8-column aggregate ice crystals. The II-TM based backscatter values are compared with those calculated by the improved geometric-optics method (IGOM) to refine the backscattering properties of the ice cloud radiative model used in the MODIS Collection 6 cloud optical property product. The integrated attenuated backscatter-to-cloud optical depth (IAB-ICOD) relation is derived from simulations using a CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite) lidar simulator based on a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model. By comparing the simulation results and co-located CALIPSO and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) observations, the non-uniform zonal distribution of ice clouds over ocean is characterized in terms of a mixture of smooth and rough ice particles. The percentage of the smooth particles is approximately 6% and 9% for tropical and midlatitude ice clouds, respectively.
