Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.

Abstract:Two novel wide-angle and broadband 2D photonic crystal polarization splitters (PCPS) which are the multilayer wavy films (MWF) structure and arrow-head like structure are designed based on the autocloning method. Plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure and explain the reason for the wide-angle and broadband polarization splitting effect. In order to verify the result derived from PWE method, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to test and measure the polarization effect for the MWF structure.

Abstract:Based on the mechanism of automatic shaping, the corrugated multilayer films of two_dimensional (2D) phtonic crystal is designed.This structure realizes omnidirectional polarization splitting with TM mode passing window between λ＝148 and 152μm, which is the complete band gap of TE mode. The variable rang es of the slope angle of the layers and the width of a-Si single layer are 38° —49° and 014—015μm, respectively. Band structure has been used to expl ain the omnidirectional polarization effect. An arrow-end_like 2D photonic cryst al which is the deformation of the corrugated multilayer films is introduced for comparison. It can only work as a wide-angle polarization splitter not as an o mnidirectional one for wavelength from 128 to 131μm. The comparison of th e band structures of these two different 2D photonic crystals leads to the metho d of extending the incident angle of polarization splitter.

Abstract:Ultracompact 1 x N ( N > 2) beam splitters based on coupling of multiple photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are numerically demonstrated. The operation of the devices is on the basis of the self-imaging phenomenon. Variation of the effective index of modified rods induces the transverse redistribution of the N-fold images with the same coupling length, and uniform or free splitting can be achieved. The devices with three and four output channels are discussed in details as examples. Results show that this kind of beam splitters are very short. At the operating wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the splitting length of the devices is only 35 mu m even if the output channel number reaches 20. It provides a new method and a compact model to export freely the beam to N channels in PCW devices and can find practical applications in future photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The self-imaging effect based on symmetrical interference in multimode layer-by-layer photonic crystal waveguides (PhCWs), is numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With the properties of twofold images, a kind of three-dimensional (3D) PhCW-based power splitters with an ultracompact size using complete photonic bandgaps is proposed, calculated, and analyzed. The presented structure can be extended for the design of M×N power splitters for 3D photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a new Y-shaped beam splitter is designed by combining the partial band gap with self-collimation in a two-dimensional photonic crystal, and the design has been validated by infinite-difference time-domain simulation. Simultaneously, we improve the design and enhance the power transmission ratio by inserting an air trench into the incident waveguide. The transmission rises from 24% to 44% at the normalized frequency of 0.185 in each branch, and the maximum transmission ratio within the frequency range of self-collimation reaches 47% at the normalized frequency of 0.187.

Abstract:In this paper, we present methods for beam splitting in a planar photonic crystal, where the light is self-guided as dictated by the self-collimation phenomenon. We present an analysis of a one-to-two and one-to-three beam splitter in a self-guiding photonic crystal lattice and validate our design and simulations with experimental results. Moreover, we present the first one-to-three splitter in a self-guiding planar photonic crystal. Additionally, we discuss the ability to tune the properties of these devices and present initial experimental results. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:The properties of two-fold images, based on asymmetric interference in multimode interference-based photonic crystal waveguides, are numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With these image properties, 2 x 2 power splitters (PSs) with an ultracompact size are designed. Arbitrary splitting ratio can be achieved by modifying the sizes (the effective refractive indices) of one pair of rods in the multimode region. As an example, a 3-dB 2 x 2 PS with a size of 24 x 8 mu m(2) is presented with an output efficiency as high as 98%. The method can be extended for the design of M x N PSs for photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the development of the self-collimation phenomenon in photonic crystal structures for integrated optics applications. In addition, detailed numerical analysis, design procedures, fabrication and characterization techniques are included. Applications presented in this paper include: channelless waveguiding, orthogonal bending of light, tunable beam splitter, all-optical analog-to-digital converter, reconfigurable optical switch, chemical/gas sensor and a three-dimensional optical interconnect bus.

Abstract:A fundamental 1×2 beam splitter based on the self-imaging phenomena in multi-mode one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) waveguides is presented,and its transmission characteristics are investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method.Calculated results indicate that a high transmittance (>95%) can be observed within a wide frequency band for the 1×2 beam splitter without complicated structural optimizations.In this letter,a simple and compact 1×4 beam splitter is constructed by combining the fundamental 1×2 beam splitter with the flexible bends of 1D PC waveguides.Such beam splitters can be applied to highly dense photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:Light-beam-splitting characteristics are theoretically and experimentally studied in 2D squarelattice photonic crystals (PhCs) with delicately designed and modulated output surfaces. Compared with the traditional branch-waveguide and self-collimation-type PhC splitters, our proposed structure can not only split the input light beam into different numbers of branches but also realize the adjustment of their relative light intensities in each branch. Moreover, the influence of a light beam's incident angle on both the output branch beams' relative intensity and propagation direction is investigated. This proposed light beam splitter is able to work within a broad frequency range, and the propagation directions of the output split beams can be modified with the incident beam's frequency. In addition, when the PhC device becomes thicker, a kind of light-beam-focusing phenomenon is observed. Advantageously, our lightbeam-splitting device has no restriction as to the incident light beam's location and width, so it is much more convenient and practical for achieving optical connection with other functional devices in complicated, large-scale, all-optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:A novel optical beam splitter constructed on the basis of photonic crystal（PC） with hybrid lattices is proposed in this paper.The band gap of square-lattice PC is so designed that the incident light is divided into several branch beams.Triangular-lattice graded-index PCs are combined for focusing each branch.Computational calculations are carried out on the basis of finite-different time-domain algorithm to prove the feasibility of our design.The waveguide is unnecessary in the design.Thus the device has functions of both splitting and focusing beams.Size of the divided beam at site of full-width at half-maximum is of the order of λ/2.The designed splitter has the advantages that it has a small volume and can be integrated by conventional semiconductor manufacturing process.

Abstract:A fundamental T-branch in one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides based on the omnidirectional reflection is constructed. Numerical simulations of this T-branch indicate that without any structural optimization, four high reflectance peaks and three high transmittance peaks appear alternately within a wide enough frequency band. The T-branch with the unique transmission characteristics can be used as a wavelength splitter. Combining the fundamental T-branch with flexible bends of one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides, we construct simple and compact wavelength splitters with arbitrary branching angles. Those wavelength splitters are expected to be applied to high density photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report a new kind of polarization splitter based on dual-core photonic crystal fibers. The polarization splitter has a symmetric directional coupler configuration. Each core exhibits high birefringence, which gives rise to an adequate difference in the coupling lengths for the two orthogonal polarizations. A 1.7-mm-long splitter is obtained with the splitting ratio better than - 11 dB and a bandwidth of 40 nm. The relationship between the length of the polarization splitter and the diameter of the air hole in the middle of the two cores is discussed. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:In the paper, a novel power-splitting scheme based on two dimensional photonic crystal (2D PhC) is proposed. The structure can be divided into three sections, including the input waveguide, coupling region, and output region, and the latter two sections consist of two parallel waveguides placed in proximity. The operation principle of the splitter is that only one of the super-modes splitting from the directional coupler can propagate through coupling region in the frequency range of interest. The radius of air holes next to the guiding region in coupling region is increased to avoid the acute back reflection at the entrance to the input waveguide induced by the modes mismatch between the input waveguide and coupling region. While in output region, the radius of these corresponding air holes is also increased so that the two splitting super-modes have same propagation constants to avoid the coupling between the two output waveguides. Moreover, as the length of coupling region is varied, its influence on the splitting performance is discussed, and it is verified that the relationship between the splitter length and bandwidth has a trade-off.
